MacMini keyboard

My MacMini suddenly started freezing up EVERY TIME I tried to use the number keypad. I figured it must be the keyboard so bought a new one. It is doing the same thing - if I inadvertantly hit a key on the number keypad it freezes and I have to reboot the computer for anythink to work. What's happening and what can I do?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • New macmini - keyboard fails to pair

I just unpacked a new macmini.
My old mouse will pair with it (I use a trackpad on the i7 now)
but the new wireless keyboard will not pair with the macmini.
I tried powering off the i7 and removing batteries from the othey keyboard and trackpad
    but that didn't help.
    Now what do I do?

Have you tried resetting the PRAM? If not, take a look at this tech note:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Another thing to try if the above doesn't work is a SMC reset.

  • MacMini Keyboard Issues

Hi, this morning i have rebooted my macmini server and after the reboot a was not able to use my wired keyboard and mouse in the login window. My mouse is moving but I cannot click somewhere, and I cannot type my login and pass in the field. I have succesfully logged in to my server with Screen Sharing from another iMac in the shop. Also, a couple of week ago i've made a backup of the system on a external Firewire disk, and when i boot on this disk i'm able to use my keyboard and mouse to login back. I'm currently using my backup to ask you for help Anyone got an idea about what's happen to my macmini server?
I have the 10.6.4 system. My 2010 mac mini is not refurbished. Thanks for your help.

I'd get a current backup on an external disk drive, if you don't already have one.
Given you've tested with another system environment, that would imply problems with the low-level drivers. Try reloading the cumulative update (not the delta) for 10.6.4, and see if that gets you anywhere.
You may end up reinstalling, and reloading (migrating) from your backup.

  • MacMini & PC keyboard?

Hi, my daughter loves her PC k/b..we are giving her a new Macmini on the 28th for her b/day..should ask her to move over to a mac k/b? ...L

Any standard USB keyboard will work fine.
You'll only need to move over to an Apple keyboard if you want the volume controls / Eject key (you can do this with the volume control in the menu bar / eject from Finder), and if you want the correct markings on the Command / Option keys. Everything else should be fine.
If the existing keyboard has a PS/2 connector, you'll need to get a USB keyboard anyway - so you might as well make it the Apple if that's the case.

  • I have a macmini on order, I wonder if I can pair the wireless apple keyboard and magic touchpad without using any other input devices, especially, since everything is brand new and not yet paired.

You may just want to save yourself any possible issues
by just hooking up a wired keyboard and mouse on first
start up.  Any USB keyboard and mouse should work.
There have been many that have had problems on first boot
    using the Bluetooth devices.

  • Macmini not connecting to keyboard on startup

My MacMini has stopped connecting both to my keyboard and mouse (both are BTwireles).  Ergo, when I power up the computer, cannot log in as no keyboard input is recognized.  Put new batteries, see light come up and tried pairing again, tried usb keyboard, all to no avail.  Any suggestions besides taking the MacMini to the shop?

Ok if Ive correctly understood, even the USB Keyboard and mouse are not working?

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard doesn't connect to MacMini

    Hello,
I have a problem with my wireless keyboard. When I installed my Mac Mini last year together with the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Wireless Mighty Mouse I hadn't any problems.
Once both devices didn't want to work anymore. At first the mouse finished its work. I used another USB Mouse and since that time the mouse works fine than before. The next problem I get with the keyboard. But all I did, wasn't successful. The MacMini doesn't connect to the keyboard.
    I tried...:
    1.) to use new batteries
2.) to try it with my MacBookPro (it connect without a problem and is afterwards fully functional!)
3.) to use for a short time my old USB-Keyboard
4.) to try once more connecting it over the Bluetooth-Preferences
5.) to delete in the libraries com.apple.bluetooth.plist and then to restart the Mac.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Alex

I reinstalled the OS and simultaneously I downgraded it to 10.5. It seems to work now perfectly again. Also the often occured kernel-panics disappeared.

  • Entering password text on macmini without a keyboard

i will be changing my network password.  I normally access my macmini using screensharing from a macbook air.  Once I update my password for the network I can no longer access my macmini via screensharing and I don't have a keyboard.  What can I use to enter my password text.

A keyboard ($10 USB) is a very useful thing to have.

  • Can I run MacMini without keyboard or mouse?

I am using my MacMini as an entertainment center, controlling it remotely from other PCs (Tiger & Win XP) with VNC software. I was hoping I could run the MacMini without a keyboard and mouse to minimize footprint / improve aesthetics, but it currently hangs on boot if they are not connected. I can't seem to find anything in Help / Discussions. Is there a way to modify the settings to allow the MacMini to boot reliably without a keyboard and mouse?

My Mac mini also has no keyboard or mouse. I remote control it with Apple Remote Desktop or VNC. There's no requirement for any Mac to have a keyboard or mouse plugged in to startup.
If you have Bluetooth in your Mac mini and there's no keyboard or mouse installed, the Bluetooth software may start looking for devices. You can turn this option off in the Bluetooth System Preferences by unchecking the "Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup when no input device is present". But if this isn't what's holding you up, maybe you could look in your System.log file to see what is going on at startup?

  • MacMini & wired aluminum keyboard

    Hi,
I have macmini coreduo and new wired aluminum keyboard.
the problem is keyboard is not responding before OS loaded.
i mean i cant choose OS what i want or i cant start with safe mode my windows because keyboard doesnt work before OS loaded.
ALT button is not working or any button when bootscreen is appeal.
WHY and is anyone know, how can i fix it ?

Hi. I'm new to this forum lark but as i saw your comment i thought i'd have a go at answering it for you. I had exactly the same problem yesterday and spent over an hour with Apple Support trying to resolve it. The problem is that the new 'slim aluminium' keyboard is not totally compatible with the little mac mini. There is a firmware issure that means that befor os X kicks in, it does not comunicate with the wired keyboard. The guy at tech help went off for further help his end after an hour of telling me i was not pressing the c key properly - as i was trying to boot from the cd - but whilst he was away i managed it. I got my old bluetooth keyboard out of it's box and reconnected that and when i rebooted with the c key on that depressed it worked just fine. When i told him that, he said there must be a fault with my new keyboard and that he'd send me a new one. He called back to say that Apple were aware that there was an issue with this keyboard and the mini and that i should just check for firmware updates as they are looking into it. Nice....

  • MacMini/wireless keyboard

I am starting my new Mac Mini and am trying to connect the wireless keyboard but it doesn't work! The keyboard only blinks green but doesn't connect? I can easily connect the keyboard to my MacBook without any problems.
Does anybody have a clue about what I am doing wrong?

Is it Mac OS X Server or client? If Server, a wired keyboard is required during setup (or a remote installation from another Mac); if client, maybe you should unpair the keyboard from the other Mac before trying to pair it with the Mini.
    Just some guesses...

  • MacMini Apple Keyboard crazy at startup

I Have Mac mini Intel 10.6.8, 2.53 dual core 4g ram.  Apple keyboard USB and wireless apple mouse.
At First it seemed like a broken keyboard... with keys not responding and some keys activating sporadically without my pressing.
got a new keyboard and reinstalled a clean operating system on an Erased HD, tried other usb ports.
I did all the rests for cpu and pram.
    What Happens now is.
Computer boots normally and upon complete boot the number 5 presses automatically without me pressing any keys. its stops only when I press any key on the key board.
I found this out by accident. not touching anything but using the mouse and launching text editor. once text editor launched the number 5 is continuously pressed and looks like this (555555555555) non stop until i press another key. it stops until it decides to start again without warning or rational reason i could think of later on doing the same thing.
Please let me know what you think it might be and how I could fix the problem.

I did more research and as it turns out I have been Microsofted by Apple. Yes the reason I hated Microsoft has happened to me by apple. My Keyboard problems happened with the newest update of 10.6.8 and update of firmware 1.1
    This really blows. ARRRGH!

  • Using the same keyboard with iPhone and MacMini. Neat!

    So Folks,
I bought a wireless kb and it works with both my iPhone and my mac. (not at the same time of course).
This is how you can do it too:
    1) Sync the kb with the iPhone first
    2) Turn off the phone's BT and sync the kb with your Mac.
    3) Whenever the computer is off, you can press the KB power button to use it with the iPhone
    4) To use the kb with your mac, turn off the iPhone's BT. Press the KB power button while you start your computer. (You can turn the iPhone's BT on again as soon as the kb begins to work with the Mac).
    5) You can repeat steps 3 or 4 at will. So two devices one kb. Neat!
    Regards

    Hello:
A BT device may only be connected to one thing at a time.  To switch to another device, one needs to delete it from the one it is currently connected to.
