MacMini looks terrible with Samsung SyncMaster 225BW

I have the latest Mac working with a Samsung SyncMaster 225 monitor, and the font aliasing look terrible! Is there anything I can do about this? I have gone through the colour calibration and it is slightly improved, but it still looks pretty poor.
I have connected this monitor to a PC and the font display looks good, except for Apple's webpages (such as these discussion forums)! What fonts are used here? And why do these look so poor on this 22" 1680x1050 DVI connected TFT monitor?
Any clue would be appreciated?

Thanks for the reply. I think it is half and half, the problem is both Apple and the Samsung. I believe the graphics adapter (Intel GMA 950) in the MacMini is pretty poor and what you said about Apple's font smoothing... and I think the actual Samsung panel is somehow not good with this adapter.
I tried the MacMini on an NEC 21" and it looked better, and I also tried it on a BenQ 24" and this was pretty good. I also have a iMac 24" and whatever panel they use in that, the fonts, etc looks pretty **** good!
So there must be something going on with the Samsung 225BW and the Mini itself! (Although, to be honest, my NEC 1770NX 17" LCD monitor is not giving that good a display at the moment!)
Is there a way of updating the driver for this Samsung (or this NEC 1770NX) monitor?! Are we all stuck with whatever driver the Mac uses when it detects the display?

There has been quite a lot of discussion here about driving twin displays with the mini, and more recently about the potential for USB video adapters to facilitate this, particularly in the light of several vendors claiming they have suitable MacOS devices and drivers 'almost ready'.
The DisplayLink solution seems to be the one most suggested as viable, though it's a pity they have not yet been able to move their drivers from beta - I suspect that puts a few people off. It's therefore good to hear of a real-world experience that should help others decide whether or not to go this route!

Problem (ugly display) with Samsung syncmaster 2243

I just plug my Samsung Syncmaster 2243BW on the mac mini (DVI). The resolution set is the good one : 1680x1050 @ 60hz, but the display isn' t clear, accurate, especially with the fonts.

Without knowing exactly what it is you see and object to, I will say that a 22" monitor with 1680 x 1050 resolution is at the low end of the scale among most monitors on the market in terms of density of pixels on the screen. If you consider one square centimeter of area on your 22" monitor, it will have approximately 1250 pixels within that area. Then consider that a 17" MacBook Pro will have 2750 pixels within that same area of one square centimeter.
Obviously text will look a lot more clear when there is a pixel density of more than double on one display compared to another. Again, I am not sure if this is the underlying reason for your complaint about your new monitor, but it's something to consider.
Samsung also make a 2343 monitor, and even though it is only one inch larger in size, it is quite a bit higher in resolution. You might be happier with that.

Problems with samsung syncmaster 173v

hi i got msi geforcefx 5600 [128mb] vtdr version ... anyway i also bought samsung syncmaster 173v LCD monitor ... but the strange thing is there are more contrasts on the sides of the LCD then the middle ... it is like that all non-windows and games ... i dont understand why and LCD cant adjust this ... for example if i change the desktop to plain color black ... i can see the difference between the middle and sides easily ... all the system is well setup so it is either the agp card or the LCD ... i went to the store and they give me the chance to test a new LCD (same one) with my PC and it turns out to be the same ... i contact to the samsung on their website (which they didnt respond) ... is there a firmware update or something like this ... pls help me ... it is the first time i am using a LCD and i guess it was not such a good idea to give up CRT :( ... btw my system is
pentium 4 - 3ghz (HT)
msi geforcefx 5600
asus pc4800 mobo

I recommend you get on samsung.com and look for chat. I just finished spending about a hour with them about another model and covered a series on difficulties. I was surprised to find out on their website that my Samsung LCD TV was not covered by any warrantee! (It really is tho - but the site says "No".) Just one of many surprises that they are still working on. The other big deal is figuring out the software upgrade function. Good luck!

Problem: Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter with Samsung Syncmaster 2033HD

I am using the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter to connect to a Samsung Syncmaster 2033HD
However, I get No Signal with DVI as the Source.
It works when plugged into the DVI slot of the Mac Pro.
Any help would be much appreciated.

DisplayPort and its variant Mini DisplayPort, use a new and different protocol for communicating with your display.
A properly-functioning adapter can request the DisplayPort use "Dual-Mode", which produces a good approximation of single-Link DVI/HDMI. This is good for resolutions up to 1920 wide, which would include your Samsung (1600 by 900).
Wider displays require a more expensive "active" "powered" converter, to convert DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI.
So if the display works with a straight DVI connection, but not a DisplayPort adaptation to "Dual Mode" DVI the weak link appears to be the adapter, but you cannot quite rule out the display card.

Everything I export is gigantic and looks terrible with FCE

I have tried exporting a project every way I can think of. Started with a 64MB .m4v i exported from iMovie, have tried custom size, basically every quicktime export option available. Every single movie is 4-5 times the size of the original, grainy, and generally just looks terrible.
I used to use FCPro, now using FCE, and wondering if this is just a limitation of the software or has to do with the source file. Also, FCE won't let me import .m4v files or .mov files. Really frustrated with this program. If I could just figure out how to export a decent looking movie that's a reasonable size I'd be fine with it.

I did a DV export and that file now looks like crap. This is way harder than it should be.
Can't import the files I need into FCE (.mp4 or .mov)
Can't import from iMovie since source files won't import
Can't use iMovie export .m4v cause it won't work with FCE
Can't use iMovie export DV cause it looks terrible.
That's a whole lot of can'ts for what's supposed to be a powerful video editing program.

Can't set refresh rate to 75 with Samsung SyncMaster 932 BF

I can't set refresh rate to 75Hz both in Gnome display properties and in Nvidia panel. So i have it stuck at 60Hz.
I've tried several solutions i found on forums but none of them worked

1st : It runs perfectly fine at 1280x1024@75Hz in Windows XP/Vista, so there is no reason it shouldn't work in Linux. In Nvidia-panel there is even the 75Hz option in the drop-down list when resolution is 1280x1024.
2nd : It isn't easy on the eyes at 60Hz compared to 75Hz, even more when i play games (Quake 3 for example).

SyncMaster 225BW questions

The display attached to my new Mac Pro is Samsung SyncMaster 225BW which I originaly attached to the Mac with provided Vga adapter. Since the monitor also is DVI capable, I bought DVI connector am now digital to ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT via Leopard and Vista boot camp OS. My question is whether this is better than using Vga adapter, if SM225BW.ICM profle is best for use, and whether Vista "Invalid Display Type" atikmdag error should matter to me. I'm fairly sure that same error was occuring with the VGA adapter and even when I called it a plug and play monitor with default colour scheme. Also, whether 60 Hertz which it seems to default to on this Mac is better rather than 75 Hertz default on previous PC. It looks great to me and best in Leopard.

DVI may give a slightly sharper picture. 60Hz if fine. LCDs don't have flicker problems at 60Hz (unlike some CRTs).

External screen resolution "defaults" to low-rez (T510, docked; Samsung SyncMaster 730b monitor)

I have a T510 Thinkpad with docking station (Windows XP) with Samsung SyncMaster 730b monitor. Every time I start up, it defaults to low resolution and I need to manually increase the screen resolution. Is there a way to make the default setting for the external monitor is high-resolution?

hey ct-user,
it is hard to say if this is caused by the external monitor or by the docking station.
try having the the external monitor connected to the T510 and see if it "saves" the resolution that was previously set.
also, test the external monitor on a different laptop and see if the same issue occurs.

OSX and SyncMaster 225BW

Hello,
I'm using a Samsung SyncMaster 225BW on my PowerMac. I've created a new profile for this screen (Samsung calibrated). So now I have 2 profiles for my screen : "Samsung" and "Samsung calibrated".
Sometimes the first one disappear ! And when it happens, if I choose another profile, it has no effect on what is displayed (color, contrast, ... stay the same).
What is the problem ?

Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

MacMini mid-2011/ Yosemite w Samsung Syncmaster monitor

Hello all.
I have been happily working with my MacMini mid-2011 (2.3Ghz Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM) with a Samsung Syncmaster B2440 HDMI-connected to it for a long time.
Since the upgrade to Mavericks and later to Yosemite, the following problem occurs: when switching the monitor off, and later switching it back on, no video signal is sent to the monitor, which remains blank and tries to switch through all its different inputs. Unplugging the hdmi cable and plugging it back in also gives no joy. It looks like the whole video output services are switch off at OS level or something.
The only thing I can do to get the monitor on, oddly enough, is to connect to the mac mini through a remote desktop from another device, and switching the display to my AppleTV. This action does switch also the Samsung monitor back on.
So I then thought, great, I will create myself an apple script and a workflow associated to this AirPlay monitor switch and associate it to a keyboard shortcut, but this does not appear to work either (no, the shortcut is not in conflict with any other global shortcut).
Any help will be much appreciated.

I originally set up my mini with the included HDMI -> DVI adaptor to connect to a Sycmaster monitor. The graphics were very good.

Samsung SyncMaster P2770HD doesn't want to work with new MacBook Air

I have a (pre-unibody) MacBook Pro and a Samsung SyncMaster P2770HD. I just picked up a MacBook Air with a MiniDisplay Port to DVI adapter. The monitor works fine with my older Pro but when I connect using the adapter to my Air, the monitor doesn't work. The monitor momentarily lights up and complains that it's not receiving a signal.
Any ideas?

Photoshop and monitor profile (Samsung SyncMaster 244T with EyeOne Display 2)

I've just calibrated my Samsung SyncMaster 244T with EyeOne Display 2 and
created a monitor profile. Should I use it as the Photoshop working color
space now?

So my monitor profile is just for the OS, and photoshop should use either sRGB or Adobe RGB, or whatever color space specific to the output destination. So, say, if I plan to edit some files for a video slide show that I'm making using ProShow Producer I should edit those files in one of the NTSC color spaces and save that profile with the files. I used to just leave them in sRGB and saw some weird color results watching those slide shows on TV. Macpro with a Samsung Syncmaster 930B... Any Problems?

The Samsung Syncmaster 930b will work just fine. I have exact the same screen on my Mac Mini. On my Mac Pro i do use now 2x a Samsung Syncmaster 206bw (20 inch) and those are also working perfect. All the Samsung screens will work fine on the Mac Pro.
Before i had my new 20 inch Samsung screens i used the 19 inch screen. Worked perfect.
