Macmini to blue g3

My friend has an intel mac mini and a blue g3 tower. How can he connect the to the G3 tower and use the hard drive as a backup for iPhoto?
Thanks!

Since (according to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583) the G3 towers predate those systems capable of use in firewire target disk mode, the most obvious way is to have the G3 connected via ethernet and set it's sharing to allow the mini to connect. A standard ethernet patch lead (since the mini has auto-sensing), or indeed, the two devices wired via a router, would be sufficient.

Linc, the resident dump guru, will probably be along in awhile and provide deeper insights, but here goes for now. I'm seeing an awful lot of warnings and messages from Chrome. Any chance you could lay off that browser for awhile and use Safari in the meanwhile? No red messages anywhere in the listing. Have you tried rebooting into Mountain Lion Recovery Mode to do a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions? (Cause in spite of what your config tag says, the dump indicates you are running a ML kernel)

Macmini 2011 on lion, goes to a blue screen on monitor when awakening from sleep mode, last 3 or 4 seconds, before desktop appears, can anyone help? Thanks

Depending on the system configuration, this may not
be unusual.  The Mini that I use for my home theater,
which is connected to a receiver then to a TV, all via
HDMI usually takes a couple seconds to come up just
the way yours does.  Same happens when I switch sources
on the receiver.  Actually, it starts with the blue screen and
will sometimes flash before the desktop comes up.
It seems that when HDMI goes dormant, there is handshaking
that needs to be re-established, at least thats my SWAG on it.
On the other hand, the Mac Mini Server that I use as a work
station and is connected to a Thunderbolt Display, wakes to desktop
in a second, maybe two.  On this combo, it just comes up to
    the desk top.
It also probably depends on what processes were active when
the Mini was put to sleep.  So it may take some time for it to get around
    to reloading the desktop.

  • MacMini Blue/Blackscreen

Just got this after a 10.5.7 update....full combo update, i might add, this on a barely 3 weeks old, bog standard 2Ghz Mini
Did Disk repair/Pram/Permissions......still no good, safe mode is the only mode I can boot to.
Just about to wipe/re install Leopard.....
Is this still an ongoing issue for many/any on here???
Any ideas on cause/ resolution ( no pun intended)...
Seems it's affecting more macbook than any other owners.........??

Once the mini boots in safe mode, go into Displays Preferences and set the resolution to whatever it is supposed to be set to that is optimum for the monitor that is attached. Then restart normally. Hopefully it will remember that setting and boot into a working screen.

  • Macmini can't wake up and I Get a Black Screen

Hi all, this is my first post in this community. Please do help me.
I purchased a Mac mini (2012 late model, OS was originally Mavericks 10.9.1 when the machine arrives at my home. ) in January 2014. I used a “miniDP to DP adapter” to connect the Macmini with my Asus PB278Q Display (the original DP cable that comes with PB278Q is connected to the adapter. The adapter is plugged into the Thunderbolt socket on the back of Macmini). It supports the maximum resolution on my display (2560x1440), but if I use a HDMI cable instead, it only supports up to 1920x1080P. Everything was fine until last week when I attempted to wake up macmini after it had slept for 8 hours or so (I used it in the morning, put it to sleep mode before going to work, and then came back at 5:40 pm hoping to use it again). The Macmini light was on, and I could hear noise. But the screen is black with its power light yellow. When I kept hitting the keyboard, I could hear a “Ding” from Macmini each time, and the PB278Q power light sometimes turned blue, but soon a prompt "No Signal” appeared on the screen, followed by a totally black screen with power led turning back to yellow.
I tried to unplug the adapter from the thunderbolt port, plugging it back in, connecting a HDMI cable with macmini (PB278Q supports both DP and HDMI), nothing helped. Pressing and holding the power button for 6 secs, and pressing it again to let Macmini reboot surely helps each time. I have not done a thorough experiment to tell within how many hours the wakeup has no issues. But I am sure that there is no issues at least within one hour. I.e. if I walk away from my macmini, and it sleeps (set to 10 mins sleep), come backs after not a long while, and hit the keyboard or the trackpad. The screen comes back to life immediately, and I see the “login” dialog.
I called Mac techsupport for three times and talked with their higher level engineers for a long time. They suggested me to do “Command+Option+R+P”. Now I know that is “Resetting NVRAM / PRAM”. But the problem stays.
Does Re-installing help? I just reinstalled last night and won’t be able to judge until tomorrow. At this point, I have the following suspicions, which I hope someone can help:
    1. The miniDP to DP adapter might have caused this problem. Replacing one adapter or using a good miniDP-DP cable might be the solution. But I can’t find such a cable or adapter on Apple’s online store. Note it should be Mini-DP to DP or thunderbolt to DP cable. Please suggest where I can get one
    2. I doubt that my suspicion 1 is valid, as in my question – why is everything ok when the macmini does not sleep or sleeps a short time? When I work on the macmini, no problem happens. The display works fine, and the resolution is the maximum that the display is capable of. Therefore, why should my suspicion one hold any water?
    3. Since the display power led turns blue when macmini detects keyboard hits, does that prove that macmini is innocent, as it successfully sends out a signal to my display, but somehow my display persistently says “no signal”. In this light, can we shrink the problem identification scope to the display, the DP cable and the adapter?
Thank you very much for any help or hint/tips I can get from any of you.
    God bless.

    Hello Bluebird,
See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

  • Output MacMini to TV

I am trying to play 1920x1080 output from FCE via new MacMini (2.0 GHz, 1GB)to TV set. I am not having much luck. Trying to output several different formats, including AIC, but not much luck. Is anyone doing this? If so, what is your setting - Formats, network, MacMini H/W setup? Trying couple of methods: A - stream from the iMac I use for editing, but the network link is obviously slow (wired 100G ethernet) and the display freezes a bit. Will Gbit network upfate be sufficient? Method B: transfer the outputs to the MacMini HDD, but again, no matter what the format type, the display is "jerky". Maybe the mini is too weak, maybe the format I am setting is wrong. It all displays o.k. on the original iMac, but it is 2.66GHz, 4GB based and has smaller display, which doesn't display the artifacts as much. I am tryin got use QT-pro for playback. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

For those interested, the system is now complete. Unfortunately, it does not involve Mac Mini (at least not at the moment). The mini cannot play Blu-ray rate HD video, until most likely the Snow Leopard gets released, when it should be able to use the graphics adapter's hardware acceleration. The current solution involves PS3, which is powerful enough to decode all the 1080 HD I could throw at it, with power to spare, and it's output looks better on HDTV. I loaded S/W called MediaLink on the iMAC. That adds uPnP capabilities to the iMAC, so that I can now share any files from the iMAC with the PS3, including iTunes library, iPhoto, Apperture, and any file. I load the BD outputs from the Toast (1920x1080i60) as if for Blu-ray burning onto a hard drive associated with the iMac and share it no the network to play it. Wired ethernet is plenty fast, but my WiFi is limited to about 6 Mbits at the moment, so I could either limit the Toast output bandwith, speed up the WiFi or use wired. I chose wired at the moment and will update to 802.11n wireless router, so that I can get at least 25Mbit avg. throughput for the 1080i60 video stream. So remote iMAC data in HD can be done without shuttling discs or drives between locations in the house at Blu-ray quality. Plus we can share music, pictures, rent movies, etc. etc.- all the multimedia resources of the iMac are available at the TV location.

  • Can't do a fresh install on my new MacMini!

Hello... After trying out my new MacMini and installing software and all I decided to make a fresh new installation of the OS. Unfortunately when i put the dvd in and boot from there or run the installer and the computer restarts it always gets stuck at the "Stars" or "space" screen and does not continue with the installation. Waited for about 30 minutes but nothing... Have tried this many many many frustrating times. Some info about the configuration of the computer.
-The MacOS dvd's are the ones that came with the computer.
-The computer is set up with a logitech cordless desktop keayboard and mouse but tried it also with a normal USB mouse and keyboard and the same thing happened.
    - Got an external disk connected with firewire cable but also i disconnected it when trying to do the clean install
    - Also i had the network cable removed as well in case it affected the fresh installation..
    - Checked the hard drive permissions etc as well...
Could someone help as it really bugs me and somehow i expected these things to be easier on a MAC...

    jbouro wrote:
Also the other DVD with the bundled software gives me the same result when i try to do the hardware check from it (stops in the "space" screen).
I do not understand what you mean by this. The Apple Hardware Test does not start up with the "Aurora" space desktop background but instead displays a very minimal all-blue background & a window that is essentially all text except for a few tabs & a progress bar. You do not seem to be running the AHT but something else, probably just the regular startup disk's copy of Leopard.
If so, (& your other comments suggest this) it seems likely that your difficulties involve some incompatibility with your keyboard that prevent it from sending the startup key combinations to the Mac at startup time. Your best bet is to try using an Apple branded, wired keyboard to test for this. If your friend does not have one, you may be able to take the Mac to the store you purchased it from & use one of their keyboards for the test.

  • MacMini and HDTV?

i'm thinking about getting a MacMini to connect to my HDTV, and then just connecting my bluetooth keyboard and mouse to it, thus Macatizing my living room. if i connect the Mini to the TV, will i be able to watch DVDs in HD on it? what if i make movies with iMovie HD, will i be able to watch those in HD on the TV too?
(i hear there are some programs out there that will allow me to record TV, kind of like Windows XP: Media Edition, but i'll save those questions for later. thanks!)
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Rck,
You & I are thinking exactly the same thing. I want to buy a Mac Mini to drive my Panasonic TH-42PX500U. I want to use the TV audio for iTunes, DVD player for DVDs, Handle Slide Shows Via iPhoto, play games and surf. Basically having a 42" monitor for the Mini. I also wonder if software upgrades will suffice when the HD DVD/Blue-Ray decision is made or if a different drive will be needed. I suspect many people are considering this and the first Intel Mac Mini will be designed for this application. Any help is welcomed. I'm stoked.

  • MacMini won't accept boot commands - HELP!

My MacMini recently had a fresh Leopard installation. Yesterday it wouldn't open any applications (click icon on dock and it would load the application and immediately quit) so I rebooted the machine. Now it boots, displays the apple symbol, blue screen and then Leopard standard background, the mouse cursor toggles between mouse pointer and colourful circle. Here it stops!
I have attempted to use the boot commands such as Command-T to access it via firewire but it ignores all commands (I cannot even boot from a bootable installation DVD). I have tested the keyboard and it isn't that.
    Please HELP!

I had a similar experience where a brand new Mac Mini (Model Identifier: Macmini2,1) would intermittently fail to recognize the pre-boot command keys. Apple support decided it needed a new system board, which it got, but that did not fix the problem.
In this case an Apple aluminum/white keyboard worked as expected at the Apple store.
I was using a PC keyboard and mouse through a cheap PS/2 to USB adapter and the folks at the Apple store were quick to suggest that was the problem, but connecting my keyboard and adapter to another Mini of the same model at the Apple store worked perfectly.
In the end, the 'official' recommendation was to buy a 'USB 2.0 compatible keyboard'.
Well, a plain Logitech ($20 at Fry's) also failed! I decided to return the Mini and buy one that worked!
While carefully documenting the problem, it began working as expected!
It turned out that, in my case, the pre-boot commands only worked if the keyboard was connected to the outside USB port. That's the port nearest the right side of the mini when viewed from the back, under the audio out port.
This configuration has been working now for over a year with the original keyboard and adapter.
Try connecting the keyboard to the right-most USB port.
    Regards,
    -Glen

  • Alternative to Blu-Ray and HD DVD players?

I just watched The Keynote presentation for 2008 and saw that there is a new software update that revolutionizes the Apple TV. The first idea that came to mind is the battle between Blu-Ray and HD DVD. With the HD capabilities of the Apple TV now and Dolby Digital 5.1 support, would it be safe to say that, if one wasn't worried about having a hard copy of the HD movie, the Apple TV could be an alternative to the battle of the current generation of formats?
Could one say that the Apple TV does the same job as these high definition players? Let it be noted that I haven't experienced movie quality in iTunes yet.

There are 3 separate issues here.
First, the monitor quality and capability:
If you have 1920x1080 resolution monitor that can display 1080p (progressive scan), then ATV will be significantly inferior than BRD or HD/DVD player sending 1080p signal natively to full HD monitor. If your monitor is less than that (say 1366x768 or 1280x720 and can handle only 1080i (interlace) or 720p), probably not all that much different than ATV displaying at 720p (which is 1280x720). The only thing is the amount of bitrate (data per/second) that ATV content provides versus BRD or HD/DVD content.
Second, all BRD and HD/DVD players "upscales" 480i DVD (Stand Def) content to 1080i/p, which can be quite good. I've not been impressed with ATV's ability to upscale 640x480 content (iTune SD content) to large monitors. Also, SD DVDs are actually encoded at over 800x480 for widescreen content these days and bitrate is much higher than 1500 for iTune movies.
    Third issue:
The audio on ATV HD content is 5.1 whereas DolbyHD and DTS equivalent are 7.1 - which if you have setup your room with 7.1 system (like I have), 5.1 is a bit of a disappointment. Further, SD DVD from iTune store is still DD2.0, and while most receivers can handle that into DD-II/IIx, it is simulated and not discrete sound output. SD DVDs have 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 depending on content/movie.
So the long answer to being BRD or HD/DVD player alternative is it depends. One must tradeoff the benefit of a dedicated player in addition to ATV (or MacMini for that matter).
Certainly cannot debate about the convenience, if one has a decent broadband connection and n/g router setup.

  • No Video via HDMI or screen share from MacMini

    Hello,
I've had the following setup for over a year now without any problems:
    MacMini <HDMI> Denon X2000 AVR
    Sony Blue-ray <HDMI> Denon X2000 AVR <HDMI> Sony 55" TV
Cable Box <HDMI> Denon X2000 AVR
Since I don't have a keyboard or mouse for my mini I've setup "Screen Sharing" so I can login from my MacBook and control it as needed.
Everything was fine until a few days ago, I switched inputs from my Cable box over to the Mini and there was no video. I tried "login in" to my mini via my MacBook and I can't see the desktop, it's just a black box. I can however see the 3TB USB 3.0 drive that i have attached to my mini and have access to all my files.
So to recap my Mini starts up, power light comes on, makes the startup sound but I get no video on my TV or in "Screen Share" from my MacBook. I do however have access to my files on my Mini via my MacBook.
Has anyone had this situation before? I've checked all the HDMI cables by taking the one from my Cable box that is working and plugging it into the Mini to no avail. I've also restarted the mini multiple times.

    I've got a 2011 Mac mini.
Since I don't have a keyboard or mouse for my mini I've setup "Screen Sharing" so I can login from my MacBook and control it as needed.
Same here! I've been using Screen Sharing to use this mac mini since I purchased it in 2011. I've never had a monitor hooked up to it.
A few days ago I connected my 41" Samsung TV to the mac mini using an HDMI cable. Since doing so, I can still connect to the mac mini and browse the mac mini's file system in Finder (Desktop, Applications, Documents, Movies, Music, etc...) but when I click Share Screen... with that mac mini via the Finder (as I've successfully done for years) it just hangs, and eventually I get the message "Connection failed to mac mini... Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect. Also make sure your network connection is working properly."
So to recap, the only thing at all that's changed on that mac mini was plugging in the HDMI cable to the television. And now I cannot use Share Screen with it.
For what it's worth, I did hard reboot the mac mini and was able to successfully Share Screen. But after going away for most of the day and coming back, now that I try to Share Screen I again get the error message I pasted above.
Any help would be really appreciated. I don't want to have to reboot my mac mini just to Share Screen for a couple hours every time I want to use it.
Edited to add: while I can't Share Screen to that mac mini any more since plugging it in to the tv with the HDMI cable, for what it's worth I can still control iTunes using the Remote app for iOS. I doubt that's too relevant but adding it here just in case.

  • MacMini output at 30hz???

I have a MacMini that used to be in my carputer install http://www.avidanross.com/main.php?g2_itemId=596
Unfortunately, that car was totalled. Fortunately, insurance helped me pay for an M3, with Nav. So, with the nav, I have decided to go fully OEM on this install. I found a group in Germany that created a VGA->NAV converter. The issue I have encountered with this conversion box is the very specific resolution required.
    Here is what happened.
CarMES (the converter) has instructions on using PowerStrip for windows (http://www.carmes.de/download/ebas/CIBIGEN.pdf)
Following the resolution instructions, I attempted to use DisplayConfigX and SwitchResX to force the resolution, but because the convertor does not broadcast EDID information, the monitor registered as non-existant.
So, I turned to the gHead II from Dr. Bott. Here
The gHead solved the EDID information, as the Mac Mini was able to output resolutions even though os x thought there was no monitor. But, the ghead only offered an 800x600 resolution. I needed an 800x480.
I contacted Dr. Bott, and they were amazing. They custom designed a new gHead adapter for me with 800x480 as a supported resolution. The new adapter was shipped to me, and yes, it had the correct resolution, but the engineers said they couldnt get the refresh rate down to 30hz.
So here I am, I can output 800x480, but cant get the refresh down low enough. Is this a limitation of the Mac Mini? Has anyone been able to get the refresh that low? Am I out of luck? Will I have to go back to winblows? Someone, anyone, ideas?

    Absolutely!

  • Apple Super Drive with MacMini mid 2010

Hello. Is it possible to use external Apple Super Drive with MacMini mid 2010? My internal drive seems to be out of work.

Most any USB DVD Drive will work just fine, plus tray loading drives are cheaper, faster and more reliable than slim superdrives.
I'm very happily using an LG GE24LU20 with my both older iMac's and Mac Mini.

  • Hangs on Blue Screen on Startup

Hi all.  I know there are similar posts to mine, but my questions can not be found so far in my searches.
I have a 2009-ish refurbished Apple Store MacBook Air with a SSD.
Today I restarted my computer, it seemed to be running a bit hot and slow.  After rebooting I could only get it to get to a blue screen and no desktop.  Computer boots normally with grey screen, apple logo and gear icon... following which I get a blue screen, sometimes with a gear other times with no gear or an alternating with/with out gear on blue screen.  Screen never goes to desktop screen but momentarily there appears to be a single pixel square (or possibly a 4 pixel square) of white near the upper left corner that appears momentarily over the blue, then gone.
After searching I have tried the following things...
Tried booting in safe mode (holding down shift) with same results.
Tried doing a PRAM reset with same results.
Tried booting in verbose mode with same results.
Tried booting in single user mode and did the following:
ran fsck -fy and disk verified with no errors, however it did indicate that something had updated.  rebooted with same results.
again ran fsck -fy multitple times with no errors, rebooted with same results.
ran mount -uw, disk reported it was HFS read only journaled... changed drive mount to -o for read write sucessfuly, then ran fsck again and rebooted with same results.
So according to fsck the drive is fine, but if I reboot and then try mount -uw again, it again shows as read only.  I am not sure if this is normal or indicates there is in fact a hard drive problem.  Or perhaps there is a bigger issue.
I do not have a usb CD Rom drive to attempt to boot from OSX Snow Leopard disk in order to test further, I am stuck at the moment.  I do have another laptop and a MacMini which I could potentially use to share a CD over WiFi, but I am unsure if I can boot from a shared CDROM via wifi and if so how to boot into that mode.
Does this sound like a drive issue or potentially something else like a virus or motherboard or graphics card failure?  Thanks in advance for your time and efforts to answer this question.
    bk

Update: Using Remote Install I was able to remotely boot my mac from another laptop's CDROM drive and run Disk Utility from the installer which again passed with out errors like the fsck command.  I also repaired disk permissions.  Upon reboot to the internal SSD, I am again getting the same blue screen.
So, since I can boot remotely and my disk seems to check out ok I am guessing now that there is something wrong with my OS, some kind of corruption has occurred, but that is just a guess.  It is possible I guess for there still to be an actual hard drive or hard ware failure of some kind.
    Any help is still appreciated.

  • Firewire networking with PC (PC goes blue-screen after connecting cable)

I made netwrok shareing between PC and macmini(PowerPC) via Firewire cable.
    Internet <-> PC(192.168.0.1) <-(firewire)-> Mac mini(192.168.0.2 - router address 192.168.0.1)
There was no problem at first, until I got updated OSX by last release(10.4.7).
But after I update my OSX, PC gets blue-screen every time when the network is on(after boot or connecting cable).
I tried PC with TI 1394, and Agere chpset.
    and found the same problem.
Does anyone has the same problem or has solution?

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
