MacMini won't accept boot commands - HELP!

My MacMini recently had a fresh Leopard installation. Yesterday it wouldn't open any applications (click icon on dock and it would load the application and immediately quit) so I rebooted the machine. Now it boots, displays the apple symbol, blue screen and then Leopard standard background, the mouse cursor toggles between mouse pointer and colourful circle. Here it stops!
I have attempted to use the boot commands such as Command-T to access it via firewire but it ignores all commands (I cannot even boot from a bootable installation DVD). I have tested the keyboard and it isn't that.
Please HELP!

I had a similar experience where a brand new Mac Mini (Model Identifier: Macmini2,1) would intermittently fail to recognize the pre-boot command keys. Apple support decided it needed a new system board, which it got, but that did not fix the problem.
In this case an Apple aluminum/white keyboard worked as expected at the Apple store.
I was using a PC keyboard and mouse through a cheap PS/2 to USB adapter and the folks at the Apple store were quick to suggest that was the problem, but connecting my keyboard and adapter to another Mini of the same model at the Apple store worked perfectly.
In the end, the 'official' recommendation was to buy a 'USB 2.0 compatible keyboard'.
Well, a plain Logitech ($20 at Fry's) also failed! I decided to return the Mini and buy one that worked!
While carefully documenting the problem, it began working as expected!
It turned out that, in my case, the pre-boot commands only worked if the keyboard was connected to the outside USB port. That's the port nearest the right side of the mini when viewed from the back, under the audio out port.
This configuration has been working now for over a year with the original keyboard and adapter.
Try connecting the keyboard to the right-most USB port.

Please repost in the Final Cut Pro forum. Have you considered upgrading your machine, if you are still running Leopard your machine may be as old as 5 years old. While this should not matter you probably won't get the performance you want out of a demanding app like FCP.
    Best of luck.

  • Won't Boot to Apple Hardware Test or accept Boot Commands

    Hi All,
I would appreciate some help with this issue, I am trying to boot up to the Apple Hardware Test on my Install Disk 1 that shipped with my MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Model #A1226 ordered new with 4 gigs of memory (around Aug. 2007). I am currently running 10.5.6 and the install disk of course contains the Tiger OS. I have nothing plugging into my computer, other than the Power Adapter. I have the proper install disk inserted in the computer and am holding down the "d" key on my built in keyboard throughout startup, but it will not go to the AHT. It simply boots to the normal login screen for Leopard. In fact the only boot commands that I see any visible or audible confirmation that it has taken effect is the option key, taking me to selecting a Startup Manager and holding down the Power Button gives me a tone from the internal speaker after a few seconds.
Below are what I have tried with seemingly no effect:
    "d"
    "c"
    "t"
    Option-Command-"p"-"r" (no beeps)
    Command-"v"
    Command-"s"
Shift (not sure I should see or hear any confirmation, I don't have any login items set right now so I can't tell if it has any effect)
I have not tried an of the networked drive boot commands as I don't have any networked drives
The only way I have been able to boot from either the optical drive or another disk is either holding down the option key during boot up or selecting the drive from the startup manager in system preferences.
I can't seem to access the AHT an in any way. The reason I am trying to access it is because I have had a few weird intermittent problems that I can't put my finger on and would like to be able to rule hardware out.
I also just replaced my HD with a WD 320 gig drive after my original drive failed due to a physical error. I just restored my data, and all seems to be running well after a permissions repair and a disk repair while booted up on my install disk.
The intermittent problems I was talking about are very vague and rare so I is difficult to describe them other that just a hunch that something is still a bit off. One is the display, every once in a while, showing what looks like a massive bar code or UPC code on my screen. This is not like the bands with soft edges that seem to be a well documented issue with the early MBP but transparent lines of alternating width and brightness with hard edges. Again it looks just like a UPC code transposed on my screen. The other items are random freezing of the OS or the mouse and the fact that my keyboard does not respond to any but a few boot commands. Again all the things are either rare and intermittent or do not come up in daily use of my machine. But when taken together, seem to add up to the conclusion there is still some issue present (at least in my mind).
To recap my specific questions relate to not being able to run the Apple Hardware Test and many of the boot commands having no effect. If you can shed light on the other items mentioned, great!
    Thank you!

At a guess, I would think this error code has to do with the video artifacts you are experiencing. You might try reseating all the cables to the display. If the position of the screen makes a difference, there may be damage to a cable, particularly where it goes through the hinge.
Apple is the keeper of the error codes. If you have access to an Apple Store, you could probably ask about this.
Don't know about the other intermittent problems. Does an external keyboard work? If so, there's likely a problem with the internal, maybe even again, a cable or connection.
You could also try creating a new use account and see if the keyboard and mouse problems persist. If not, there could be some sort of software corruption in your usual account. Ditto with the freezing.
    Good luck!

  • DVD drive won't accept disks since Snow Leopard upgrade

I just upgraded my Macbook to Snow Leopard, and now I can't insert disks into my optical drive. It just won't accept them. Help!
    Thanks in advance!

    Try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
No guarantee this will work but it's a start.

  • IMac starting in safe boot won't accept p/w as stuck on caps?

    Hello
My iMac OSX opens at 'safe boot'' screen and requests password. Won't accept password as stuck in caps (I have checked keyboard and it's fine) and my password is not in capitals! Any suggestions would be very gratefully received.
    Many thanks

Have you tried a PRAM reset?
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Do you another wired keyboard you could use to see whether the existing keyboard has developed a problem.

  • Time Capsule won't accept my user name and password for access - Help!

    Hi all,
My Time Capsule seemed to stop working one day and I had to do a hard reset with the little button at the back. After that it worked and I restored my wireless network settings but now I can't access the Time Capsules hard drive with Time Machine.
When I try to choose it as my Backup Disk in the Time Machine preferences it says "Enter your user name and password so Time Machine can access the file server "Our Time Capsule" (the name of my time capsule). However, every time I try to enter my password I get "Sorry, you entered an invalid username or password".
I've already tried several resets of the Time Capsule and I've also tried logging on my computer as the Root user and changing my administrator account password back and forth but no go.
    Help! and Thanks.

    Norman & Harry,
    Consider the following:
*_Time Capsule Keeps Asking Me For a Password_*
It will be important to know what is going on, or what you are doing when it asks for the password. Is it asking for a password only when Time Machine attempts a backup? Consider this:
It is NOT your username and password it wants when you try accessing the Time Capsule. (I know... it SAYS "username and password") But it means the Time Capsule's Name and Password.
You will find that by launching Airport Utility.
Select the TC on the left.
    Click "Manual Setup".
    Click the "Time Capsule" Tab.
You will see "Time Capsule Name:" and "Time Capsule Password".
Make sure “Remember password in keychain" is checked.
That is the information you need to enter when it asks for "username & password."
*I Don’t Remember What My Time Capsule Password Is*
You can see what your current TC password is by going into Keychain.
Open your Keychain and select "login" from the Keychains pane in the top left. Highlight "Passwords" in the Category pane from the lower left.
Sort all the items by Kind. Note everything labeled "Airport...". How many do you have listed? There should only be one "Airport base station password" for each base station that you have active. Also, there should only be one "Airport network password" for each network you have created. If there are more than these, then delete all but the ones with the most recent Modification date.
To see what passwords are being stored, double-click your Time Capsules' entry. A new window will appear.
Put a check beside "Show Password". You may be asked for your own Admin password so enter that.
Now the Password field will display the password you entered into Airport Utility for your Time Capsule
*It Still Won’t Accept the TC Name and Password*
Launch Airport Utility --> Manual Setup.
Select "Disks" in the tool bar above.
    Click the "File Sharing" tab.
Is "File Sharing" checked? It should be.
What is selected beside "Secure Shared Disks"? If it says "With Accounts" or "With a Disk Password" then the system will ask you for a password every time it mounts the TC hard disk. If you switch it to "With Time Capsule Password" then use the password you designated earlier in the “Time Capsule" tab. It should only ask you once and then never again - because you had checked "Remember password in keychain".
If you have made any changes then click "Update".
Let us know if this resolves your issue.
    Cheers!

You made a purchase and exhausted the credit on your card before it processed. All purchases are final. Contact iTunes Store support. You need to settle up before you can purchase or download anything else.

  • Can't buy iCloud storage for second time on same card (accidentally missed .99c payment). Payment information won't accept  my country:region and will  not let me hit complete. Please help!!

Please help! I've cannot update/amend my payment info after accidently missing the payment for more icloud storage. I would like to purchase it again using the same card and it wont let me. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated!

Look, I understand I still need a card attached to the account. The problem is, it won't accept my card because I only have 87 cents in my bank account right now.
If I had known there would be so much trouble with the iTunes card, I would have just put the cash in my bank account in the morning instead of buying an iTunes card (I didn't expect the banks to be open on Thanksgiving of course).
Apple will only accept cards that have a balance. The balance is so small in my account that it won't accept it as a valid card.
I'm going to have to contact Apple anyway to reset the security questions. That's obvious. Your answers were not exactly helpful. You didn't tell me anything I don't already know, but thanks for trying to be helpful.

Sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try again.

If the mouse clicks something on its own then it looks like you have a hardware problem with the trackpad or possibly the battery that is right underneath the trackpad.
I have read that the battery can swell and that would put pressure on the trackpad.

What type of encryption are you using with your wireless network -WEP or WPA?
If your wireless router supports both which it should unless it is quite old and you are using WEP, try switching to WPA which is much more secure than WEP which is important if you have a Windows PC or any Windows based device connected to your network.
In addition, when was the last time you checked Netgear's website to see if there is a firmware update available for your wireless router model that you haven't installed?

  • Java install won't accept Ok ?? Desperate for help??

Java install won't accept <Ok>?? Desperate for help??
I've decided that I'm going to develop my Rails applications in Linux and keep hitting a BRICK WALL every time I try to install NetBeans or Java. I download all of the packages and come to a text screen that says "Package Configuration" and then "Configuring sun-java5-bin" and then it asks you to read the agreement and there's an <Ok> at the bottom. I can't get through this and everytime it fails my 'package manager' goes bonkers and I have to reload the Ubuntu Gutys Gibbon operating system AGAIN!!!
I push ENTER and type in "yes" and "Ok" and there is no response.
I've loaded this operating system FIVE TIMES NOW and the bottleneck is very frustrating as I can't program in a graphics environment without Java.
