A couple days ago, I bought a MacMini. Everything was ok until I have received a message from ichat saying that "Failed to start Video Chat Because ......(me) didn't respond".

I don't have a firewall installed

Mac OS X 10.4 (haven't upgraded yet)

AIrplay is not supported on 1st gen, I assume you have a 2nd gen (black box). Not all apps are enabled for AirPlay, this would be up to the developers to do

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

25 Sony 8mm old Home videos importing as ntsc best import/export settings
I have 25 Sony 8mm old Home videos some over 20 years old importing as ntsc with a brand new mac-book pro and FCE 4.0. What is the best import and export settings to save for the future. Quality is important and time and space is not that important but I don't want to get silly considering the quality I am importing.

The normal way to do this is with an analog-digital converter such as the Canopus ADVC-110 or ADVC-300 (not the ADVC-mini). I was lucky and found a sony camera that I hooked a four pin firewire to a 9 pin (800) to my mac.

Playing iTunes or Sony Connect music and videos on the 8820
How can I move iTunes or Sony Connect music and videos to the 8820? I've got Desktop Manager 4.3 software, but the only way I can get the iTunes music (video won't copy) to the 8820 is to first burn it to a cd and then "import" with the version of Roxio on Desktop Manager and then copy it via Roxio onto the 8820. In the process I lose the music track descriptive information (artist/track). Also using this process I've now got 2 copies of the same songs on my desktop plus a cd I can't seem to add songs to. What is the most efficient and effective way to do this?
I have not tried to deal with my Sonny Connect library yet -- any advice on getting those songs onto the 8820?
Also, I have never had an iPod and am new to iTunes -- is there a better music and video service out there? Preferrably one where it is easy to copy the songs to the 8820 as that is my only portable music device. What is the "Manually Manage Music and Vidios" option on itunes + ipod?
When I connect my ipod on my computer theres this ipod page + 1 of the options is "Manually Manage Music and Videos". What does that do if i select it? The reason I'm asking is that I don't want to mess up my ipod if I do select it. + later I can't change it back. THANKS!

It is the best and easiest way to use your ipod.
When you manually manage your music you choose what to add and delete from the ipod. You dont have to sync your ipod.
When it is on manual you can use your ipod on as many computers and itunes libraries as you want without losing any music off your ipod.
You just drag and drop the songs, videos and playlists you want from the itunes library to the ipods name.
Right click and delete what you dont want from the main playlists under the ipods name.
Nothing will ever be deleted or added until you direct it and you can safely use it on any computer.
If you click manually manage music nothing will change on your ipod as it is now until you physically add or delete things.
If you resync with an itunes library later, though, you have to be careful because anything not in that itunes library will be deleted off the ipod. I always keep my ipod manually managed because I use it on several diff computers.

If it is manually managed and you go to your friends house you can use her itunes library which means basically getting music from any other itunes library you want. Not just your own. -

Thanks!The specs listed on B & H note that one cannot transfer HDV720p/30 via firewire, but the comments on the same site regarding the recorder in question seem to rebut this. I've since read a suggestion about defeating the down-convert option on the deck, so that FCP, which is expecting to capture HDV based on my capture settings, will recognize what's coming through the firewire. I'm wondering if I'll be able to control the deck through the capture window, or just start tape and capture now. Thoughts? Thanks very much!

IChat Video Conference Quality?

I am thinking about purchasing a Macbook and using it for one-on-one video conferencing, but would like to know if the webcam video quality is really as good as it is in the store demo. That is, when you video conference with others (Mac and PC), is the video you receive sharp, or is it blocky (more like big pixels) and response slow even with a cable modem? I am asking because we also have a new Sony Vaio and the webcam quality is pretty poor with video conferencing using AIM, Sightspeed, and Windows Live Messenger. While at the Apple store the salesperson was not able to connect to anyone outside of the store, so I was not able to gauge the quality. Also, are you able to make the video window larger? (it seems so small)

Windows XP ProThe primary determinant of iChat video conferencing quality is the upstream Internet connection speed on both ends of the call.
But for a given connection speed such as yours (whatever it is), I'd say that Mac to Mac iChat video conferencing would be clearly better than PC video conferencing on AIM, SightSpeed, or Windows Live Messenger. It's not going to be as good as what you saw in the Apple Store unless you have an upstream connection speed of 1500 Kbps or greater.
I have both Macs and PCs, but I always choose to use iChat Mac to Mac video conferencing whenever possible. As a Mac alternative to iChat, I prefer Skype for Mac with video and recommend it for Mac users who need to video-connect with PC users.
Both iChat and Skype offer up to full-screen video. -
Can't initiate video conference in iChatAV (using airport express)
I have a variation of a problem with starting video conference in iChat via airport express - did read previous posts to the subject but did not find a solution yet.
The problem is: I can't initiate the video conference with my new intel core duo iMac - but I can have one, when the user on the other side initiates it.
I assume this has to do with port forwarding on airport express, since I also have an older iMac G4 which until now was connected to the internet via Siemens ADSL modem C010-I(ethernet) and it worked just fine.
My firewall is off.
I tried to forward ports 4099, 5190 and 5193 (as suggested by www.portforward.com) but that didn't seem to solve the issue. Any other ideas, please?Hi Reed,
If the modem routes then there is a chance it is doing DHCP as default if you have not changed it.
You can check by connection direct to the modem with your computer and then doing this:
Go to System Preferences > Network.
Select Built in Ethernet in the second drop down.
Select the TCP/IP tab
If the IP listed below the Using DHCP drop down appears the same as when you go here then the modem is in Bridge mode. If it appears to be in one of these groups:
192.168.xxx.xxx
10.xxx.xxx.xxx
or 172.16.xxx.xxx through 172.32.xxx.xxx then the modem is routing.
The Airport does DHCP by default as well.
You do not want two DHCP servers.
This can be turned off in Airport Admin Utility found in Applications/Utilities
Log in to the Airport in the samll window and then go to the Network tab
Deselect Distributing Addresses if the modem is routing.

No video conference in iChat4 -Leopard
I just bought a Macbook running Leopard and can't have video conferences in iChat 4.
I wonder if someone could help me please
Here's what I've done so far:
1- I set up Quicktime to 1.5mbps
2- I turned off internet sharing
3- I changed Firewall to allow iChat incoming connections
3- I configured the Audio/Video bandwith limit to 100Kbps (tried NONE too)
4- I connected the Macbook directly into the broadband Hub via ethernet cable.
and still having a communication error every time I invite or am invited for video chats. I can transfer files with no problems but nobody can send me files!
I really don't know what else to do. Please help me!

How can I tell that AutoQOS config is adequate on a video conference switch
I have a Tandberg video conference bridge and gateway connected to a 3750 switch. The audio is marked EF and the video CS3. I configured AutoQos on the switch and trust DSCP on the ports. When we reach a large video conference of 25 or more attendies, we begin to have problems. The Tandberg starts to ratchet some of the video streams down, some to below 180kps, and the conference quality begins to suffer.
The only change to the default AutoQOS config I've made is changing the "mls qos trust dscp" on the uplinks, adding a QOS policy on the Tandberg ports to mark the video with CS3 and trust the audio DSCP (Tandberg had a bug that didn't mark the video packets) and adding
queue-set 2
priority-queue out
to the uplinks.
Will the default AutoQOS queue/buffer/SRR share and shape commands be adequate for 25 to 30 simultaneous video streams? We allow about 500k per stream.
I read through the 3750 QOS guide, but am a bit confused with the explanations of the queuing and SRR workings. I know that CS3 is mapped to COS-3, but don't know which queue it goes in and whether or not it gets shaped/disgarded when too much video is present.
Once I am sure that the 3750 QOS is working OK, and not causing problems with our large conference calls, then I'll expand my troubleshooting to the rest of the network.
I've attached a text file with the 3750 config, and 'show mls qos int statistics' that show the packets are being marked.I mistyped in my first post. I do indeed mark the video as AF41 (Cos4). It is the call control that I mark CS3 with the policy map to get around the old Tandberg bug that doesn't mark the call control.
So do you think the queue 3, where Cos4 goes to, is big enough to handle 30 video streams of 480k? If my calculation is correct that would be 14.4mbps of video on a 100mbps port.
With this config.....

...is it telling me that queues 1 & 2 get 10% bw, queue 3 gets 60% and queue 4 gets 20% bw and is shared? If that is correct than 60% is more than enough for 14.4mbps of video.

i just bought a macbook pro and it came with an installed camera at the top.
one of my friends has a PC and has a webcam for it.
i want to have a video conference with her over aim but it doesnt work properly.
she has aim 6.0 and i dont know what i have, i just got my laptop yesterday and clicked on ichat and my buddy list came up so im guessing it is the most up to date aim.
would there be any connection problems to this? please help! the camera preview thing works fine but i just cant connect it says this when i try:

Binary Images Description for "iChat"is the important bit. (And then the Binary images bit is only listed so you know where we are talking about)
The three "titles" have no info inside their sections.
This means that the ports are not open somewhere.
As to which end (other than changing to AIM 5.9 as well) the problem lies is difficult to say.
1) If you Mac Firewall is On do the stuff around the Second pic here http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html#_ports
2) Have you set these ports or set UPnP to work in your Modem or Router ?
3) Have you gone to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab and set the drop down to 1.5Mbps/T1/LAN
These are the most common reasons on a Mac.
That is not to say that AIM 5.9 does not need setting up.
A) AIM 5.9
B) Tuning the Camera and Mic to app.

C) Then the XP firewall needs none Microsoft apps allowed as Exceptions

IChat AV 3.1.1 (v429) Video Conference Problem :(
Hello everyone,
I have a problem with iChat and I hope you can help me guys. I don't know what to do, I never had this problem before. When I start an video conference I can see myself, the picture is kinda blur though..I can't see the person I am having the video conference with and the other way around..can anyone tell me what's wrong. My iChat was working fine a couple of days ago and all of the sudden it stopped working..
I re-installed ichat and the problem still persists.
I changed my quick time streaming settings to 1.5 Mbps..and it's still not working..
Please can anyone help me to solve this problem??

how are you doing? Thanks for your help Defcom(UK) ,that was the missing piece of my puzzle. If you were here I'd give you a big kiss. Well, maybe not.. I think a hug would do just as good.
Fortunately, I noticed the problem right after installing iGlasses, so I was able to figure out the problem immediately. I deinstalled iGlasses, unfortunately deinstallation of iGlasses won't fix it either. What you have to do is deinstall iChat and remove all preferences,logs & iChat folders. The best and easiest way to do it, is to use an application like cleanapp, you can find more information on cleanapp at http://synium.de/cleanapp/index.html .
So after you have wiped off iChat completele with all files and settings from your system, download iChat or reinstalled it from your Mac Os X Tiger dvd. And here is the very important part, after you have installed iChat again usually it should work but in case your problem still persits, you should do what Defcon(UK) suggested.. you need to apply the Intel Combo update..so your iChat messenger is upto date..Voilà tout..the problem is solved..
