Macook RAM 4 gigs

Hi
Posted previously about installing 2 x 2 gig RAM modules in to Macbook with Intel core2 duo.
Opinion seems to be it would be able to use 3gig of the 4 gig RAM.
I have two modules of 2gig 200 pin SODIMM 256MX64 DDR PC2-5300
Before I bust open the packet has anyone actually got this to work?
I am having a wobble here..............

But, does anybody have a reasonable answer to why would Apple underestimate a machine stating that it supports up to 2 when it really supports up to 3GB?
My guess is that the MacBook can't address the full 4 GB that it needs for enhanced graphics that they lowered the spec to 2 GB. Which is the largest amount that the MacBook can access the full amount of RAM and have a matched pair.
Another thing I'd like to ask. Is there any danger in using more memory than Apple says? Is the motherboard ready for this?
No one that has done this has been back on the boards and stated there were problems.
Using more memory than indicated by Apple may void my warranty and Apple Care?
It shouldn't because it is no different than putting ram in your just using more. If your concerned don't do it.

Ignore the MacKeeper ad no matter what else you decide.
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Just sits there occupying very little space & never interfering, unless you need to invoke it in Single User Mode.

  • Will new Intel  "Conroe" chip in Mac towers support more than 4 gig of RAM?

    Hi all,
    long time no speak
    Question:
Will the new Intel "Conroe" chip in the upcoming Mac towers support more than 4 gig of RAM?
I score Orchestral and since the new VSL library is completely 24bit i need to at least be able to adress 8 gig of RAM (16 gig would be better
To APPLE: Guys please be aware that us Pro Users were always eager to adress those 8 gig of RAM in our G5s, but were dissapointed in the fact that Logic FCP etc, were never turned into 64 bit apps.....so adressing 4 gig was it for us........
I guess another way to ask the same question would be whether "Conroe" is 64 bit, as that is what is required to adress more than 4 gig of RAM.....
    thanx,
    SvK

Will the new Intel "Conroe" chip in the upcoming Mac
towers support more than 4 gig of RAM?
From what I've read Conroe will be 64-bit. A google search of "64-bit conroe" will give you a few sources and more info.

It doesn't need to be a 64-bit application. It just needs to have 64-bit memory addressing. Here is a good article if you're interested.

I don't have any experince with VSL, but I did have a quick experience with Kontakt 2 (I sold it). The Kontakt 2 forum has a post from the moderator that explains some issues around Kontakt's memory issues.
    http://www.nativeinstruments.de/forum_us/showthread.php?t=31572
"furthermore, even Kontakt 2 and related products will not get 64 bit support any time soon since this would require a complete rewrite of the engine - this is the last thing we want at this point! products based on Kontakt 2 are Akoustik Piano and Bandstand."
The complete rewrite of the audio engine might be the general issue with utilizing more than 4Gb of memory. But, I am not sure...I think there is another issue with how the OS handles memory usage.

  • Adobe cs3 @ win xp 64 bit and 16 gig of ram

im editing images with huge file size in adobe cs3 and i want to make it fast. can this machine help cs3 on it's performance ???
    OS - xp sp3 64 bit
    motherboard - gigabyte ep45-ud3p
    CPU - intel core2quad Q8200 @ 2.33GHz(4 CPUs),~2.3GHz
    GeForce 9500 GT
    RAM - 16 GIG ddr2
    thanks in advance

XP 64 is unsupported and causes countless problems with Photoshop it also lacks drivers. CS3 is 32-bit only.
    I would use CS4 and either Vista64 or Win7 64-bit OS.

  • Will OS X Mavericks run on Quad Xeon with 4 Gig RAM

I have a chance to purchase a Mac Pro with 2.66 Ghz Intel Xeon Quad Core CPU / 4 Gig DDR3 RAM / 500 Gig HD / DVD/RW - will this run OS X Mavericks?

Never really thought of the ideas all you guys mentioned, and as for the cost of the operating systems from Microsoft, you have an excellent point! When you're not accustomed to certain products and end up with some confusion, it's easy to be critical (as I started to be) but once enlightened by those who use the product regularly, it's easier to see how things may be somewhat better the Mac way. Still bulk at the prices, but with proper care and such, I'm sure the instance of needed repairs are few and far between.
As to the "hobbling" and old software to fit (backwards compatibility) I can see the nuisance in that, although expense wise for the consumer it has it's advantages. And the "8 yr. old" computer sitting on my work station desk is now being fitted with Windows 7 Professional, and is running it just fine. However, there are always issues with the newest Windows that makes me jittery (but also makes me money in my business - I own CowboyTech Computers - been working on them since 1968... anyway, on with the conversation...).
There seems to be advantages to both, but I do applaud Apple for not constantly changing the user interface. Made me (and my customers) really upset when Windows 8 hit the floor! Wow... what a mess. I took my windows 8 - hacked it - and made it run like Windows 7 - now I'm happy.
One last thing... did not know that Mac did not come in both 32 bit & 64 bit versions - hence the necessity to hardware upgrading. Gotcha...
So, thank you for the information, the lectures, the enlightening and even the tongue lashing. It was all beneficial. Plus, I got the OS X 10.5.6 Leopard installed on my MacPro G5 and love it. Obviously have a lot to learn, but I'm still young enough to do that (67 years of age).
So, Happy Mac to all of you.
    God bless...

I Thought that ram memory cycling from 12 to 0 gigs or so was and is a problem in and of itself. As you've explained and demonstrated it's not. But this scenario  that is now playing out has never happened since I've had this Mac Mini. Again many thanks.
SO if I may ask one other question separate from the above.
In updating to Yosemite would you recommend a clean install or just upgrading? I've not done a clean install since purchasing the Mini but I was thinking since I'm having issues with the system hanging and spinning icons perhaps performing a wipe is warranted. If so, I understand I can not just format and download Yosemite but I must reinstall Snow Leopard then update to Yosemite. Is this correct? Since I've upgraded the ram from 4 gigs to 8 and earlier this year to 16 gigs, will Snow Leopard recognize 16 gigs of ram?
    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

  • 64-bit or 32-bit for the 2011 (spring) Macbook Pro 8 RAM 500HD?

I wanted to know the differences between 64 bit and 32 bit OSx I am currently running the latest Lion 10.7.3 on a 2011 spring macbook pro with 8 gigs of ram 500 gigs HD. From what I can read in the info it looks like it defaults to 32 bit automatically but I was told that I can hold down the 6 and 4 keys during startup to start with 64 bit. I would just like to know anyones experiences and what software it works better with. I usually run Adobe CS5.5 and it would be great to find out 64 bit will give it a boost. Please list pros and cons you know of..
    Thanks..
    Pete

It should be running 64-bit on its own with Lion. My 2007 MBP began running full 64-bit after I installed Lion.
Run the Activity monitor and see what the kernel is using. It should show 64-bit.

  • New ram crashes fcp

I just purchased new ram for the second day in a row. I bought four 1 gig ram sticks for my g5 power pc mac. I have a total of 6 gigs. I had previously had two gigs, 4 512 ram sticks.
Under about this mac, my new ram is reongized and other programs recongized the new ram (after effects).
I opened up FCP (5.0.4) project and fcp crashes everytime. I looked up my ram, and it is compatiable with my system. Crucial. i have the ram stickes in the proper slots.
    http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=1D1DFB01A5CA7304
The project I opened in fcp was done befrore the new ram (2 gigs) was installed. Can that be the issue, or is the ram I purchased not compatiable with FCP. At first FCP would crash after opening it, now it takes a few minutes before crashing. Would Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM help? Any tips and insight on installing and ram (ram suggestion) would also help.
Thankyou for taking your time and any suggestions will be helpfull and appericated.

I get our memory from Data Memory Systems in NH.
www.datamem.com not sure what the brand name is...
    My machine has 4 slots.
    DIMM0/J11 512Mb (Pre-installed)
    DIMM1/J12 512Mb (Pre-installed)
    DIMM2/J13 Empty
    DIMM3/J14 Empty
I put a 512Mb chip in J13 & J14... The computer recognizes it, feels fresh and snappy, but without fail, it will crash after a short period of time forcing a 'hard' shutdown with the power button.

  • Added ram to mac pro, get ecc memory error and 4mem/9/40000006: B:0 C:0 R:0

I recently purchased a 2.8 8 core Mac pro (early '08 model). It came shipped with 2gigs of ram (one gig on riser card a, one gig on riser b).
I purchased 2 1gig sticks from ramjet, i followed a apple tutorial and installed the 2 original sticks in riser card A (slots 1 and 2), and the 2 new Ramjet sticks in riser card B (slots 1 and 2) for a total of 4gigs.
When I powered on the computer everything was fine, clicked the black apple logo to view "about this mac" and the 4gigs total memory showed up. However when i clicked "more info" then "memory"... it showed the status on one of the new ramjet sticks as "ecc error"
I rebooted the computer and the error message was gone, all sticks showed a status of "ok"
a few days went by and i was constantly checking the system profiler and the status would always show the sticks as "ok" and the computer acts totally normal, i run pro tools, logic pro, photoshop and it would run flawlessly.
The fact it showed an error a few days prior was still bugging me so i decided to call the applecare protection and consult with them... they said to remove and re-install the memory, reboot holding down the "option + command + R + P" to reset memory, then to reboot again holding down the "D" to do a Apple hardware Test.
the first test showed pass, i checked the extended test and that showed a 4mem/9/40000006: B:0 C:0 R:0 error, the second and 3rd tests froze and i had to push the power button to reboot.
I contacted Applecare once again and they said that since my computer was not acting funny nor freezing during apps or showing any errors that it should be fine, as long as the status said "ok" in system profiler and all four gigs registered in "about this mac" that no harm is going to happen.
when i asked what that long error code was she said it did not come up in her computer but she thinks its because its not official apple memory.
I tried searching online in forums to solve this but i cant find anything on that specific error code.
sorry for the long post but i wanted to be as detailed as possible to get the best advice
thanks and any help would be much appreciated.
and by the way i did contact ramjet and they are willing to replace my memory but there advice was also not to worry that its only giving that error due to the memory not being "official" apple memory, but if it registers and the computer acts totally normal to just leave it be.
    thanks again,
    David

    thanks for the reply Kappy,
yes they have heat sinks and ramjet states they are "apple grade"
i downloaded the istat widget (not sure how accurate that is) and it says the apple sticks on A run at 32 degrees and the ones on B run at 31 degrees
the comp is practically brand new and when i opened it for the ram install it still looked brand new (no dust) its only a few weeks old.
I am going to return the sticks for sure to be safe but where im lost is.... yes it did show ecc error once, never again, its been a week now still no ecc error. I ran tech tool deluxe and everything passes, i ran "Rember memory test" and it passes, system profiler registers all 4 gigs and shows status as ok, computer acts totally normal? but the apple hardware test fails i guess im lost to why the comp says the ram is ok nd passes most tests just not the AHT test.
Thanks for your help i hope the new sticks dont show any error
    David
O and I forgot to mention i called applecare again and requested a different agent to help me and he said Ecc stands for error correcting? so if it came up once and not again it did what it was suppose to do... corrected itself (now that sounds like more b.s to me but i have no idea about computer stuff )

  • Third party ram + apple ram?

I'm thinking about buying a macbook pro with the standard 1 stick of 1 gig ram, but third party solutions for the remaining slot looks much cheaper. Will putting 1 gig of apple ram + 1 gig of nonapple ram together cause any problems? Has anyone done this and had any issues? Thanks.

Apple don't make ram themselves. They supply Samsung, Hynix, Nanya and Micron (which is also Crucial) as standard -so any of these will be as supplied by Apple.
Some respected retailers sell these and then certain other 3rd part ram which they have extensively tested - such as ramjet and owc (macsales).
If you stick to one of the brands that Apple supplies or one of these respected 3rd parties, you should be fine. Some very cheap ram may cause problems.
    Best of luck.

How are you measuring RAM usage? Many memory utilities cannot accurately measure the amount of space an Oracle process is using because Oracle uses shared memory and the utility counts the shared memory as belonging to every Oracle process.
You pga_aggregate target is way too low as this is a database wide parameter so it should reflect total user process memory for those aspects of memory that the feature can affect. It is also just a target and if the total memory needed to support the processes exceeds the target then the target is exceeded. That is if each process needs 5M but the pga_aggregate allows only 2M on average the processes will take 5M and the total will be equal to 5M X number of processes. What the feature provides is Oracle allocates more memory for certain operations such as sorts when the load is light and the memory is available than when the load is heavy.

  • Possible RAM issues?

    hi...
i had 2 gigs of DDR2 ram, one gig for each DIMM slot, one of the mem sticks turned out bad, indicated by the hardware test and the fact that i would get kernel panic everytime i start the macbook... so i took the memstick out and now im with 1 gig ram on only the second DIMM slot, the first one is empty....
the problem is that often applications would crash out of nowhere for no apparent reason, ive checked how much free ram of the 1 gig i have, and i have plenty of free, even though running out of ram only decreases performance, not cause crashes...
so is it possible that apps will crash often, and once in a while OS X will lock up for no reason because im dont have mirror RAM on each DIMM aka, i have only one ram stick into the macbook...
PS: ive tried switching the RAM stick to DIMM slot 1, leaving DIMM 2 empty, that didnt fix anything either...

Well I emailed MSI tonight to see if they have any suggestions.  I contacted Mwave and they stated that the memory is probably bad and they suggested I send it back to them for testing.  Well I will be out of my pc for a week or so and if they deem the memory is good they will just send it back to me.  Of course I will be responsible for shipping both ways......
I will post up when MSI responds for anyone interested.  Since it is more than just one brand of memory, I would assume it is probably not the memory but I could be wrong.
ttreaders, thanks for the heads up.  I followed the user guide when installing the memory to make sure I was using the right slots.  The matrix in the user guide states: DDR400 single sticks of double sided ram should go in dim1.  But then again who's to say that it isnt a misprint in the user guide?
    Thanks for the responses everyone.

  • Program or Utility for freeing up RAM?

I'm pushing my iMac to the limit. I've maxed out the RAM (3 gig) and am using Logic Pro. Things are mostly fine, but every now and then I have to reboot to free up the RAM. It occured to me that perhaps there are good programs or utilities that could free up RAM without having to reboot. Anyone familiar with any such thing/could recommend one? thanks!

    This may work for you.

  • P-RAM Reset

    Hi Gang
Recently I reformatted a new system drive using Tiger 10.4.11 for my G5 Dual Core 2.0. Everything went well with the process. I've got plenty of RAM (8 Gigs), plenty of external storage, and I'm use Final Cut Studio 6.
Lately I've been getting the 'Beach Ball' indiscriminately; with no noticeable clues, except that I understand this could be symptomatic of IO Errors with regard to a new System Drive placed in a Tower that originally had another system drive.
The new drive does not have any known issues, it's is a 640GB WDGWD6400AAKS Caviar SE16 (bought it from OWC). http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD6400AAKS/
    I tried to do a P-RAM Reset in order to clear cache and refresh the system;
    Command Key (plus) Option Key
    Plus P & R Keys
I was under the impression that I would hear 3 Chimes, however I got the little wrist watch timer and a system drive Icon and Identifier, and a forward arrow (to the right). Maybe because I have 2nd internal storage drive?
I waited for a 1 minute or longer - no chimes
The system rebooted, but I don't know if the cache was successfully cleared, and apparently I still get the darn Beach Ball.
Please note, (whether it matters), I had to actually put this new drive in another G5 tower in order to get the Apple Black OS X Disc to initiate the install. I already thoroughly covered this issue with plenty of help here.
Any other ideas on the P-RAM Reset?
    Thanx
    Mike

I was sure that I read at one time that 4-5 PRAM Resets in a row would also Reset NVRAM, but all I find now is Wars about to be started on suggesting Multiple PRAM Resets.

    Have you tried NVRAM Reset?
    Resetting NVRAM in Open Firmware
If your computer is Open Firmware-based (Power PC) and you are unable to reset NVRAM as described above, you may alternatively reset the NVRAM and Open Firmware settings using the steps in the Solution section of Message “To continue booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return”.
In some cases, an Open Firmware-based computer may not respond to the keyboard commands noted above, and may not allow starting up into Open Firmware by pressing and holding the Command, Option, O, and F keys during startup. If you are unable to get to an Open Firmware prompt (and your computer supports doing so), try powering on the computer with the power button held down continuously—as if you were doing a firmware update. This should force the computer into Open Firmware, allowing the steps in the article noted above to be used.

  • Ram and HD info for Pismo

    Hi,
Looking to upgrade my Pismo. I loaded osx tiger on with no problem. But my 6G HD won't cut it anymore. So I'd like to buy a new HD and max out the ram to 512. Question: Is there a resourse to find out which ramm sticks and HD's are compatible with this machine. I currently have a 64 sdram pc100 3225 and a 128 sdram pc100 2225 installed, but I've heard elsewhere that pc133's will work. Maybe there are others?
Not looking to dump a ton of cash into this older machine, but if I could upgrade for $100 or so bucks it seems like it would be worthwhile. Or am I crazy.
    Any resources would be appreciated.
    Thank you!
    mark

I'm interested in this HD topic. I am wanting to upgrade my Pismo from the 12 gig HD it has in it, but want to make sure of one thing: Are the ATA 6 hard drives compatible? I'm asking because a guy at work said he read that ATA 6 is not compatible with the Pismo. You don't make any reference to that issue (and I don't even know what it means, really), so I assume any of these 2.5 inch HDs will work. I'm looking for an 80 gig, I guess. Those seem to be the most affordable for the largest amount of storage to me (at least for the $$ I have).
A second issue: This Pismo has 384 mb RAM and I'm running OS X 10.3.9. If I upgrade to Tiger, how will that RAM serve me or limit me? I've had this computer for a little over two years, and it has been great, although it seems to run slower lately, especially if I call up iPhoto. I've got just over 1,000 pix in there now, and I'm think I'm overwhelming the computer.
A third issue: This computer does not have a CD-RW on it. I'm contemplating that upgrade as well. Any thoughts on the best buy/most compatible CD-RW for the Pismo? There's probably not a wide range of options.
I've only popped the hood on this once, and that was to install the Airport card back when I bought it.
Thanks for helping me with these issues. I love my Powerbook!
