MacOSXUpd10.5.1

I have a question regarding the MacOSXUpd10.5.1 update file.
I recently begun to see LOGIN error message come up at start up.. I'm not sure how to get rid of that.
I also had issues with my iTunes and decided to run DiskUtility and ran permission repair.
I now am left with a whole bunch of permissions that the system is unable to repair that are linked to the photo booth, front row plug ins, as well as a few SUID warning messages.
I read that the above mentioned update will get rid of the warnings, but I'm unable to run the update as my iMac does not meet the requirements. What is wrong with all these files and why am I not able to run the update... I'm a new to Macs ... so I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thanks !!

I now am left with a whole bunch of permissions that the system is unable to repair that are linked to the photo booth, front row plug ins, as well as a few SUID warning messages.
Those messages are normal. Ignore them.

A previous version of Mac OS X cannot be installed from the updaters. If you need or want to revert for some reason, perform an Archive & Install from the Mac OS X 10.5 disk or the computer's original disks and then run the desired updater. If the Archive & Install creates a newer system than the one you're trying to revert to, you can't revert.

  • Safe To Run MacOSXUpd10.5.1.dmg?

    Hi,
I upgraded my version of Leopard to 10.5.1 using the automatic Software Update mechanism. However, I read that it's a good idea to download the 109.2MB MacOSXUpd10.5.1.dmg file from Apple's website and run that. So my question is, is it safe to run that update when I'm already running 10.5.1?

Apple typically puts out two versions; a Delta, which takes you between a .1 and .2, or a .5 and .6 revision, and a Combo update, which takes you from .0 all the way to the latest, including the stops along the way--from 10.4.0 to 10.4.9 for example.
In this particular case, the difference is probably between PPC and Intel downloads using Software Update vs. both being included at the Support site.

  • Updating my Macbook Pro 15" to MacOSXUPD10.5.6

I am trying for the longest time ever to upgrade my new 15" Macbook Pro to MACOSXUPD10.5.6 and here what happens :
Sytem Preferences , Software Update and I have the file 10.5.6 installed but when i go to install and update it starts and stops and does nothing .
On my 17" new Macbook pro it did.
How can I update it , I am using a Cable and i just moved from the USA to Lebanon where my Cable is slow, But I think that it doesn't matter since i have it downloaded but cant install it . Please HELP SOS :):)
    Regards
    Sam

OK, considering only the 15" model, is it correct that you have run Software Update (it is the application that is available either directly from the Apple menu or from the Software Update System Preference when you click its "Check Now" button) & seen the Mac OS X Update, version 10.5.6 listed in its window of available new software? If so, did you make sure that item was checked in the list & then click the "Install" button?
You then should have seen a screen saying the update was being downloaded with a progress bar, then eventually a notice that you must restart your computer to finish the installation. Did you see this?
If so, open the Software Update System Preference, then click on the tab "Installed Updates." In its list should be an item named "Mac OS X Update," with a version number of 10.5.6. Is it there?
If any of the above is not true, please explain in detail exactly what you did to use Software Update (the application) to obtain or install the update or any other steps you have tried to download the update, & the results of whatever you did. Please don't say "nothing happened" for any step unless literally there was no response to whatever action you performed, & note that "it didn't work" is not a helpful response -- we need to know the details of what happened, not just that it didn't work as expected.
Remember that our ability to help you depends on your furnishing clear, complete, & to the extent possible precise information like the names of applications, buttons clicked, & so on.

  • Software Update Issue - In dire need of NERD power...

Attempted to download Mavericks on my 2011 iMac (currently running on OS X 10.6.6)
App Store returned the following error:
We could not complete your purchase.
OS X can't be installed on Macintosh HD because Mac OS X version 10.6.8 or later is required.
Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to update Mac OS X.
Not a problem, I thought. I chose Software Update from my Apple menu to update Mac OS X and began downloading Mac OS X Update Combined (10.6.8 v1.1) which maintained a good and consistent rate of 10 MB/sec download speed...
...only to hang abruptly at 655 MB of 1.09 GB
Roughly 30 seconds later I receive the following error:
The update "Mac OS X Update Combined" can't be saved.
Software Update can't connect to the update server.
Make sure you're connected to the Internet, and then try again.
To be clear, I'm familiar with issues regarding and related to TCP/IP protocols, firewalls, open/blocked ports, etc.
I made sure that I was connected to the Internet, and then tried again.
The download progress stays put at 655 MB of 1.09 GB, then returns same error.
At which point I decided it might be a good idea to delete the partially complete download and start over. An Apple Support article directs me to /Library/Updates where the partially complete package parts are temporarily stored and I move them to the Trash.
Every single time I try starting the download over (due to what I suspected might be an connectivity issue that I somehow missed) it always went the same:
Download starts, coasts as 10 MB/sec, hangs at 655 MB of 1.09 GB, and returns the same error.
I thought it was odd that it would always hang at the exact same spot so I checked the /Library/Updates folder while the download was active. The package is downloaded in parts and it would always freeze after completing part10. For testing purposes, I duplicated the part10 file and renamed it as "part11" to see if the installer would recognize the dummy part--AND IT DOES! The download happily chugs past 655 MB and continues to write part12. Obviously, this did not solve my problem because once the download finished it could not compile the parts due to the real part11 being missing. It did, however, at least reveal what the problem was: the server could not retrieve that one specific file, part11.
Sadly, I'm at a loss as to where to go from here. As far as I can tell, it doesn't seem to be a connectivity issue on my end--if anything, Apple servers are the one with the issue--maybe a corrupted file? All I know is that I've pretty much exhausted all the options in my head and this is my last resort: posting on the Apple Support Communities (not that there's anything wrong with posting here, I just don't expect a genius to pop out of nowhere with a solution in hand).
p.s. my apologies for the lengthy post, I was trying to be as thorough as I could in order to alleviate as much back and forth one-line question and answer posts to save everyone some time :b

Yeah, I actually tried going the manual way not too long after my original post and unsurprisingly, the download would go smoothly only to halt at a certain point again. In fact, I tried downloading not only the MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8 but also MacOSXUpd10.6.8 just to give it a try and that too halted during download.
The most perplexing part is that these download errors exhibited the EXACT same issue of halting at a very specific point. To be doubly sure, I tried downloading multiple copies of the same file at different times with some overlap during the download times (basically started two downloads of the same copy a few mins apart and I got these results.
try#3 - MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8 - stuck at 232 MB of 1.01 GB (kept open in Download window for reference)
try#3 - MacOSXUpd10.6.8 - stuck at 430 of 454 MB (kept open in Downloads window for reference)
    try#4 - MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8 - stuck at 232 MB of 1.01 GB
    try#4 - MacOSXUpd10.6.8 - stuck at 430 of 454 MB
try#5 - MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8 - currently chugging at 61.9 of 1.10 GB, but i'm pretty sure when it's going to stop...
Come to think of it, whenever I tried to update games like "League of Legends", or download/update a Steam game I always get stuck at 33% or 99% respectively. Most recently, I bought "FFXIV:ARR" as a digital download and I haven't been able to get past a very specific point in progression for the game client download as well. So in contrary to my first assessment, it most likely IS a problem on my own end but these "symptoms" seem very clear and specific, I just can't pinpoint the problem. I don't have "connection time-out" problems when doing downloads on my work network, only at the guest house where they assign me a TCP/IP configuration for internet connectivity (which also severely hampers my ability to troubleshoot). On the other hand, P2P is just fine but I suspect that's because it doesn't require a contiguous download.
    TL;DR
Large downloads/updates over one specific network (assigned TCP/IP) always hang at specific point in download completion. Internet connectivity for browsing is fine, P2P downloads are fine.

  • Replacing .pkg files to fix "Error: No valid packages"

    Hi all -
I've just learned the hard way that I'm not supposed to delete files from the Receipts folder.
    I've done my due diligence, so I know that I need to replace at least "BaseSystem.pkg", but I have questions;
Is it ok, if I'm running 10.4.9, to copy it from my other mac running 10.3.9?
Should I try to replace the other .pkg files I deleted?
Should I just copy the whole Receipts folder?
What'll happen if I get packages I didn't have before, or that don't match the versions of the apps they're supposed to be associated with?
Sorry for all the questions, just want to be certain so I don't have to learn any more lessons the hard way.
    Thanks!
OBTW: I've also finally learned - after 10+ years as a Mac user - to back up my hard drive.

  • How do I use the Terminal to run the 10.6.8 update?

After my iMac crashed during the 10.6.8 update install, the Finder won't launch (tried via the Dock and "Force Quit" command). I've used a Terminal window to get to the folder (ChangeDirectory) with a downloaded copy of the 10.6.8 update but I don't know how to launch the Installer program to try to re-install the update (Software Update won't help here because the Mac is updated enough to claim to be running 10.6.8 so it doesn't think there is anything to update).
    TIA.

now able to create logical drive but installation again failed, here is the console log:

  • No longer can connect to the internet after updating to 10.4.10 for Intel

I (fortunately) use a cloning program (SuperDuper) to clone my MacBook Pro hard drive now and then on to an external Firewire hard drive... I say "fortunately" because after reading some of the problems folks were having with this most recent OS X update (10.4.10) I chose to update the cloned hard drive first before installing the update on the main drive... On or about 6/20 an update came out (that I can't find anymore so maybe they pulled it??) that was called "MacOSXUpd10.4.10IntelPatch.pkg". First I installed that update on my cloned drive... It booted and worked fine except that when I would try to communicate with the internet wirelessly, I could not... I didn't try a "wired" connection because I am not interested in connecting that way. The system would claim to connect to my wireless router (NetGear WGU624) but pages would time out before loading... Next I tried installing the newer (7/02) Combo package called "MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10Intel.pkg" but that improved nothing. Still no useable wireless internet connection... So in no way will I be putting this 10.4.10 update (Patch or Combo) on my main drive until something gets fixed... In fact, I went ahead and overwrote what I had on the firewire drive by recloning my main drive (running under 10.4.9) to that firewire drive again... Once I got 10.4.9 reinstalled on that firewire drive, it again connected to the internet just fine... So my experience is that there is something not happy about either the Patch or the Combo updates for 10.4.10, at least as it relates to my Intel system... I also have a G4 PPC and on that machine, the PPC version of the 10.4.10 update worked just fine (though that is a wired connection, if that matters)... Anything I am missing or can someone offer other input other than not to upgrade at this time??? Thanks... Bob...

    Hello Robert:
I infer from your post that you selected the updates to install, rather than using software update (IMHO a bad idea). At the moment, as I understand your post, your backup is not working properly and your internal HD has not been changed.
    I suggest this:
Clone your HD to your external firewire drive (new copy, not an update of changed data.
Then you have a clone in case someting goes wrong.
Update your HD using software update. If everything is running well after that, you are OK. If not, you can restore your HD from the clone.
The reason I favor using software update is that the system selects the proper software. When Apple releases updates, there are several versions available.
If you know all this, forgive the explanation - I do not know your level of computer expertise.
As an aside, there is nothing (that I am aware of) organically wrong with the OS X 10.4.10 update. Apple did release a 10.4.10 v1. update for the Intel boxes (I do not run Intel-based Macs, so I have not investigated it):

  • Error message when trying to update Leopard 10.5.1 to 10.5.2

I was happy when I switched from PC to Mac a year ago. But since upgrading to Leopard I have had so many problems that it reminds me of my (bad) experience with Windows... Where I live in dark Africa there is no support at all, so I hope some of you have a solution for my problems.
Since upgrading to Leopard I have had a lot of minor problems, which are quite irritating. But now it is getting serious, as a number of updates have failed. I just bought Aperture 2, which needs OSX 10.5.2. And now I can't upgrade form 10.5.1 to 10.5.2!
First I couldn't run the Security Update 2007-09, downloaded through Software Update. The error message said: The update "Security Update" can't be installed. The installer could not validate the contents of the "SecUpd2007-09" package. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
I then tried - in vain - to install the 10.5.2 upgrade: The error message says almost the same as the above mentioned, but mentions "MacOSXUpd10.5.2Patch".
I then tried to follow the recommendations and downloaded the MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.2 file. 343,4 MB through my 64 kb/s connection (!!!). Imagine the nightmare, when the error message appeared: "Checksum Invalid".
Maybe I should add that when trying to update Quicktime the error message said something about that the operation failed because there was tampered with the file...!
    Thanks guys

    William,
In fact I have tried both the normal software update a couple of times AND downloading the combo installer. The message, when trying to install the latter, was "Checksum Invalid". Is it possible that the files get corrupt during download? I am getting crazy - I need the upgrade to 10.5.2 in order to upgrade Aperture 1.5 to 2.0, which again is necessary in order to download images from my new camera... :((

  • Unable to authenticate from 10.5 client to 10.5 Server to mount SMB or AFP

We have been banging our heads for some time now and have no idea what is going on. Here's the scenario:
We have a 10.5.6 Server bound to an Active Directory Domain
The Server's role is: Connected to a Directory System
We have ensured that Active Directory/All Domains has been added in the Authentication Pane of Directory Services
We have made sure that single-sign on has been enabled by running dsconfigad -enablesso
We have verified that SMB and AD are using the same password
The shares are actually being re-shared from mounts added through XSan.
    This has worked in 10.4.
Now, when a client tries to mount the smb share using domain credentials they get an error that they are unable to authenticate.
If an attempt is made to authenticate from a command line the error reads:
server rejected the connection: Authentication error
The smb logs fill with error -14090 [eDSAuthFailed] on each authentication type attempt meaning it tries kerberos and fails, NTLMv2 and fails, NTLMv1 and fails.
We really need to figure this one out. Anyone have any more ideas?

It does, in fact, fail the SHA-1 test, but how could that be? What could cause the download to be corrupt over and over and over? I've downloaded it both wirelessly and by wired connection, on both the MacBook itself and on a PowerMac G5.

  • IPhoto launching at startup, iSight no longer works, 10.4.8 to blame?

My built-in iSight (first 17" intel iMac) is "in use by another application" when I attempt to use it from iMovie, iChat, or Photo Booth. When I tried disconnecting everything and rebooting, I discovered that iPhoto is launching at startup.
The only thing I can think of that has changed recently is a system update about a week ago, including 10.4.8 and whatever apps were updated.
iPhoto is not set to launch in either the StartupItems folder or my user's login items. It also does not show as checked when I ctrl-click on it in the dock.
So far I've tried resetting the PRAM and installing MacOSXUpd10.4.8Intel.dmg to no avail. I see a reference to a "Combo Update" in another unrelated thread (network problems). Does anyone recommend this? Or am I just hosed until 10.5 comes out.

Problem solved. It was a digital camera driver which is no longer compatible since the new update.
03: Check your system console and see if you have any malloc errors. Are you using anything you had to install drivers for? You get the starfish for being considerate enough to reply. I hope you get it worked out.

  • Mac 10.5.6 Upgrade - Disc Image issue, as downloaded on a PC for my Mac

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade my Mac OS (currently on version 10.4). I use dialup internet and so I cannot download the update onto my Mac, through dialup.
However, I have gone to my brothers house and downloaded the update onto his PC laptop, which I then saved onto my mobile (as data storage).
I am now trying to open the disc image onto my Mac (after saving to the Mac, from my mobile phone) but it comes up with an error message saying:
    Warning
+The following disk images failed to mount+
    Image
    MacOSXUpd10.5.6.dmg
    Reason
    +no mountable file systems+
Can someone please tell me what the problem could be? Is it possible for me to download the update onto a PC and then move it over to my Mac, and it will work?
    Many thanks!
    Paulina.

the disk image must have gotten corrupted somewhere along the way. You'll probably have to redownload it. also, I'm not sure you understand this but you first have to buy and install leopard on your computer. then you can install leopard updates like 10.5.6. you can't install 10.5.6 combo update on a tiger system like yours. You must have some version of 10.5 already on your system.

I installed MAC OSX 10.6 (snow leopard ) from the DVD , and i downloaded the MacOSXUpd10.6.1.dmg and trying to install , when it is coming to destination in the installation dialog box it is saying the following ERROR "Mac OS X Update can't be installed on this disk. This Volume does not meet the requirements for this update".
What should i do to get the latest Mac OSX on my macbook.
    Thanks in Advance
    <Edited by Host>

That is only half the answer. What does it say the OS version is?
FWIW, build 10A380 is not listed either at Mac OS X: About This Mac "build" information or at Mac OS X versions (builds) included with Intel-based Macs, & is lower than the lowest Snow Leopard build number that appears in either reference.
This means that it is most likely a pre-release developer build, which cannot be upgraded at all, & that you have no licensing rights to use past its expiration date anyway. If this is so & you want to run Snow Leopard legally, buy a retail copy.

  • Update 10.6.5 to 10.6.6 fails, can't update

    Hi,
couldn't update from 10.6.5 to 10.6.6 on a macbook pro: the installation failed with a generic message (I've tried both the normal and "combo" updates, to no avail).
judging on the install log, it seems the problem might be related to the cache file being invalid (?)... please find below an excerpt from the install log (sorry about its size!); any help/suggestions to fix the problem would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advance!

nothing of the above seems to be critical, as far as I can tell, but perhaps it might explain the permissions problem while installing the 10.6.6 upgrade.

  • Update 10.5.4 to 10.5.8 error

When I try to update 10.5.4 to 10.5.8 - either via Software Update or manually with a combo update I get this error:
The Following install step failed: run preinstall script for MacOSXUpd10.5.8.
Looking into private/var/log/install.log, I've found that the problem is this:
[date] [computer]/private/tmp/scripts.8DJn/./preinstall[832]: dyld: Library not loaded: /System/Library/Perl/5.8.8/darwin-thread-multi-2level/CORE/libperl.dylib

[date] [computer] /private/tmp/scripts.8DJn/./preinstall[832]: Reason: image not found
How can I correct this problem?

The error message indicates that the libperl.dylib file is missing from
    /System/Library/Perl/5.8.8/darwin-thread-multi-2level/CORE/
To see what's really in there, launch the Terminal.app (in /Applications/Utilities/), copy & paste this command into the Terminal window, and hit the return key:
    *open /System/Library/Perl/5.8.8/darwin-thread-multi-2level/CORE/*
Set the window that pops up into list view and see if the libperl.dylib file is there. If not, I suggest booting with your Leopard install disk and doing an Archive & Install, saving user and network settings. That should reinstall the missing file. Alternatively, if you have access to another computer running Leopard, copy that file, and send it to your computer.
