MacPro 1,1 is not recognising Hitachi DeskStar 7K4000 drives

Hi,
I have just ordered two Hitachi DeskStar 7K4000 drives and neither of them is appearing in Disk Utility or mounting.
In System Profiler they are listed is Unknown, although apparently the link speed has been negotiated to 3Gbs, which is what I would have expected.
The MacPro is currently running 10.6.8
Everything I read about them said they would negotiate down from 6Gbs and work fine on the older SATA Bus, which they appear to have done.
I've tried a jumper on the only pin available on the drive, which I understand would force down the link speed, but this has not worked either.
I guess it's possible that both drives are DOA, but it seems kind of unlikely.
Have I ordered incompatible drives? Any ideas?
Many Thanks,
Sam

As a follow up incase anyone is interested, I contacted Hitachi directly and the 7k4000 is compatible with the Mac Pro 1,1 and SATA-300 (SATA II) as well as SATA-600 (SATA III).
Basically this means the drives were faulty.

  • Final Cut Pro and Hitachi Deskstar 500GB Drive

I recently bought a Seagate 500GB internal SATA drive, and then sent it back because of compatability problems with my G5. I have now, on the advice of many on the Apple forums, bought a Hitachi Deskstar 500GB SATA to be my primary scratch capture disk for FCP.
Upon learning that the drive could be set for a transfer rate of 3.0GB or 1.5GB, with the latter being the default, I contacted Hitachi Support, and here is what they said:
"The Mac G5 has a hard ware limit at 1.5Gbs for the SATA transfer speed.
"You will not be able to get the full 3.0Gbs transfer speed out of our SATA 3.0Gb drives. There is a very small performance difference between the 1.5 Gb and 3.0Gb transfer speeds."
My question is this: Will having a 1.5GB transfer rate have any significant effect on my using this drive to edit video with FCP? In other words, I'm looking for confirmation of what Hitachi told me.
    Thanks.
    Paul S.

"Will having a 1.5GB transfer rate have any significant effect on my using this drive to edit video with FCP?"
No. Everyone using internal drives in their G5s have the same limit.

  • Sata Not Recognised As A 300gb Drive

Does anyone know why the drive is only recognised in windows as a 160Gb Drive. It really is a Maxline 300Gb 16mb cache SATA.

Im also having problems with a K8 Neo 2 plat. it works ok with one 300Gb Maxtor but add a second 300Gb drive and it plays up like you would not believe.
basicly it wont do a warm start, it hangs and the drives make odd sounds like they are seeking for somthing,
turn the pc off and on again and it boots and works perfect.

  • Thunderbolt not recognised by my hard drive!

I have a real problem with thunderbolt. I have a 15" Macbook Pro, OSX 10.8.3, with a thunderbolt portal, but when I plug in an external hard drive with the TB cable, my Macbook doesn't recognise it. The same hard drive is recognised immediately via a USB3 cable. I  then tried in stalling the latest Thunderbolt firmware update, but was told that my system wouldn't support the software, even though I appear to meet all the requirements!

HI, I have Imac 27 inch late 2012 with 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7. with osx 10.8.3. Bought Friday WD my thunderbolt drive 6tb but the thunderbolt did not recognize something is connected. disk utility does not seems anything is changing after connecting or disconnecting. System log does not seems to have any change.  So I returned to the shop, they call me up, what's wrong with it, they have tried and no issues, at all. Cable issue for sure not, drive issue of course not.
Anny suggestion if it is not working again?

  • Ipod not recognised? my solution. (driver problem solved)

my computer didnt recognise my ipod when i first attached it, (it was in windows explorer, but not my comp) and i followed loads of impossible "causes" of this up to deleting parts of the windows registry :O
(skip next step if found new hardware wizard comes up when you connect ipod)
turns out the problem was drivers. very easy. you go into device manager (start menu . right click my computer > manage) then look for unknown devices (yellow ?) and right click ipod > propertys. go to drivers tab, and reinstall / install drivers. the wizard will come up.
click this time only then next, and install the drivers from a specific location. type C:\WINDOWS\inf into the box, and it shoud find the drivers for the ipod and install them. another wizard may come up after this one finishes - do exactly the same thing on that one.
my ipod was now recognised. hope it helps someone else

This problem has been driving me mad for weeks now and I have been trawling the internet looking for a solution.
I tried this just once and my ipod synced with itunes straight away.
If you are having this problem, you MUST try this solution!
    Thanks for posting it!

  • MBP does not recognise Lacie external Hard drive

    hi,
I have a couple of 4-5 year old lacie 500 gig ext hard drives which now do not show up when plugged into the mac Book pro 2.8 intel duo core.  I have used them only a couple of months ago no problems.
    thank you

Older hard drive partitioning schemes will not show up on newer Mac OS systems.  One file will show up stating "where did all my files go" or the equivalent. Of course the drive must be mounted first and sometimes a third party utility like disk warrior or drive genius must be used. To start up from any new external hard drive in system 10 or above the GUID partition scheme must be employed. If you will never boot from your external drives you can format as Mac Os extended (journaled) without checking the GUID box. Hope this helps as well.

  • Macbook is not recognising external back up drive

I had a new hard disk installed on my macbook pro and now when I am trying to set it up and trying to transfer information to mac, it comes up with a message "Looking for source" which doesn't change. Could someone please help what to do.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Is the new HDD internal?
If yes, has it been formatted in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
Is there an OSX installed on the new HDD?
What exact Macbook Pro do you have?
    What OSX are you using?
    Ciao.

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro; one USB port not recognising anything

    Hi,
I've had my MacBook Pro since January 2012, so I believe it is the late 2011 13" model. I'm currently running OSX 10.9 although the problem I've been having has been going on around 3 or 4 months, I think I had OSX 10.7 installed when the problem started.
One of the USB ports on my Mac (the one on the left when looking at them face on) is not recognising my external hard drives, or recognising/charging my iPhone when plugged into the USB. The other USB slot works fine and recognises external hard drives, however when I insert the hard drive into the faulty USB input, although the hard drive lights up and starts whirring as if it is ready to start functioning, it does not appear under the 'Devices' tab of the Finder screen, but does appear and function when using the other port.
Similarly, when I plug my iPhone 5 into the faulty port it is not recognised/does not start charging, however if I leave it running and come back later I often have at least a level of increased battery life which suggests that it does intermittently charge from time to time, and again it functions normally when using the fully functional port.
I've tried the NVRAM reset as I have read in another post but to no avail. Is this likely to be a mechanical fault over a software problem, and if so what could be wrong with it?
Thanks for the help in advance.

thank you shootist, at least now I know the problem is as serious as I dreaded, but will not loose hope waiting for a miracle and the port works again

  • Time machine does not recognise itself after restore

I had to restore my data from time machine by doing a full migration of all data from my back up drive.
Now that I have recovered my existing system (which did involve a full wipe of HD, internet recovery and an update again from ML to mavericks).
My restored system does not recognise the back up drive as a time machine and it would appear I cannot append any future backups to this TM.
I would have to wipe the disk and start again which I did not particularly want to do.
    Any thoughts please ?
    thanks

  • AOL log-in not recognising new hard drive

I recently had to replace my hard drive and have installed iTunes 7. I lost my library, but still have my music on my iPod and am in the process of moving everything over. The big problem I am having is with my AOL account log-in, it does not recognise my new hard drive and I am then unable to log-in and access the iTunes store or my previously purchsed music. How can I get my account to recognise this new hard drive?

    Hi,
mots likely the new harddisk came preformated for use with Windows or even completely unformated.
In that case you cannot install OSX on it before 'preparing' the harddisk with Disk Utility.
After booting from the OSX install DVD Disk Utility can be found in the 'Utilities' in the Top Menu.
    Run Disk Utility
In the left pane of it click on the internal harddisk (not any partitions on that harddisk)
In the right pane click on the Partition-Tab
    Set it to one partition
Use 'MacOS Extended (Journaled)' as file system
click on the Options-button and set GPT (GUID Partition Table) as Partition scheme
    Start the partitioning.
After that is done quit Disk Utility and you should be able to install OSX on the new harddisk.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 (& other 1TB drives) for my Early 2005 Power Mac G5

    Hello there:
Like everyone and there grandmother I want a terrabyte drive! But I'm a little concerned.
The Power Mac G5 only supports the first SATA spec (1.5 Gb/s) and all the of the new drives being sold these days are of the SATA II spec (3.0 Gb/s) and use NCQ or TCQ technologies.
I’m really trying to avoid having to install a host bus adapter of any sort to use my new drive(s).
I would like to here from G5 mac users that have installed these drives or other terrabyte drives:
Did you have performance problems, did you have to do “special stuff” to get them to work???
Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 1TB (HDS721010KLA330) - from what I’ve read this drive does not auto-negotiate to the slower SATA I spec and you have to do something to the firmware in Windows- scarry!
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB (ST31000340AS)- users of other seagate products have reported a stiff performance penalty when installed in Power Mac G5
And while I’m at I like to here about experiences with the Samsung HD103UJ- I hear lots DOA drives but when these do work their faster that Raptors and that’s super fast!!!
Hopefully my trepidation is unfounded. I just don’t want computer drama... that’s for Windows users ;op
    Thanks,
    Mike Diaz

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
A good place to check on drives, is the Drive Compatibility Data base at Xlr8yourmac.
The Hitachi is reported to be a great drive in the G5, and I have heard/read nothing of this so called "do something to the firmware in Windows" stuff. Mike, the main man at Xlr8 speaks very highly of the Hitachi in his G5.
Another drive that gets great reviews is the Western Digital SE16, and RE2 series. The Green Power also shows to be an excellent drive....
Here's how the "big boys" stack up in a MacPro, tests run by Barefeats, an excellent source on Mac performance related topics. This article tests various drives in the G5.
This article compares the Hitachi, Samsung and WD GP drives.

  • Westerndigital internal harddrive is not recognised

    Hi there,
I have tried to replace my old hitachi internal harddrive in a mid2010 macbookpro 13inches with a westerndigital internal harddrive designed for osx lion.
Unfortunately, this is not recognised once i insert it in.
Has anybody had this type of problem? How did u sort it out?
Alternatively, what other internal hard disk would u advice?
Wd claims it s apple's fault as they are required to provide the right drivers with the software updates.
Unfortunately, apple does not believe so.
The hardrive is not faulty as i have been using as an external harddrive so far.
Your help would be really appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Luigi

    >> how do I know if the cable i am gonna will not have the same issue
You don't, until it's replaced & solves the problem, although that's a fairly regular problem on these forums. It's more common though, for the drive to be visible in DU, & yet fail to start up properly, or perhaps show as a startup option... & your new drive is no faster than the original, so it's hard to say for sure without replacing one or the other. I'd plump for the drive, if it were me, despite it working externally.

  • Recently installed a 1TB hitachi travelstar hard drive into my Macbook 10.6.8  however Time Machine says not configured hence cannot back anything up

Recently installed a 1TB Hitachi travelstar hard drive into my Macbook (13inch mid 2010) OS X 10.6.8 .
However now having problems with configuring , latest issue my Time Machine says Not Configured hence cannot back up using this device !
    Can anyone help ?

You installed the new hdd with new install of Mac OS .. or did you recover your old TM setup??
If TM cannot locate the Time Capsule .. is it visible in airport utility or finder??
Are you even using a TC?? If you are using an external drive you need to spell it all out.
Time Machine may not recognise the old backup.. you can usually inherit the old one.
    See B5 and B6 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Otherwise use A4.. delete the existing TM setup and reconfigure it from scratch. If you do that TM should discover and reuse the old backups if possible.. but a new hard disk might not be possible it may need to start over.
