MacPro 1,1 Video card died ! Options ?

Hey all, I'm having some problems with my MacPro and I'm suspecting the video card at this point.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2558303&tstart=0
I was looking at the Apple store website and see only 2 listed in my price range, the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, and the ATI Radeon HD 5770.
Will both these cards work in a MacPro 1,1 (2006 model) I've done a search but have found conflicting information. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
- Jay

DP Art is right I expect and the table appearing on this page that compares the 5770 and the 5870 presents it in "black and white":
http://www.apple.com/macpro/features/graphics.html
I've got a 4870 card on backorder ($349) with Apple and am seriously considering forking out another $100 to get the 5870, if reports continue to be positive about the use of the 5870 in a Mac Pro 1,1.
I've been on an upgrade path the last few months to help my MP Xeon give me a few more good years doing design work in CS apps. (New hard drives, SL upgrade, new NEC PA241W monitor, soon the card and then more RAM.) Seems wise to go for the best I can get with the card - hoping the 5870 reports continue to confirm I can. Need to decide before Apple ships the 4870 to me.
If anyone that is now reading my post in this designers' thread possesses new info on the wisdom of my thinking, please comment. Thanks!

  • 27" iMac (NON RETINA) video card configuration options!?

    Hello,
Regarding the 27" iMac (NON RETINA) model, you have the option to upgrade to either the 2GB NVidia card or the 4GB NVidia card.  I was wondering if the 4GB card is really necessary or if the 2GB card would be more than enough for my needs?  I basically use a computer for normal/everyday tasks (such as E-Mail, web surfing, chat, webcaming, watching videos (which will include streaming/mirroring with Airplay to my HDTV), basic photo editing, occasional video editing (again basic personal/everyday types of editing) etc...
I am coming from a Windows world where every thing freezes up on me (I can't even use Facebook on my current Windows 8 machine without Facebook constantly freezing up on me) it's driving me insane!  Granted I have a very cheap laptop right now so I'm sure most of the problems is related to the hardware but I don't want to have to deal with this if I move over to the Mac world so I want to make sure I get what I need.
I'm assuming a 4GB video card is perhaps overkill for me but wanted to make sure before I order.
    Thanks!

Are you saying that for video watching (either local media or online streaming), airplay to Apple TV, personal video editing (home vids etc) that the video card does not improve performance, whether it's a integrated card, 512MB card, 1GB card, 2GB, card, etc?  If so I never knew that lol, I always thought the larger the video ram was the better overall performance your display would provide.
So if I got the standard 1GB card with the 27" model, you are saying that would provide the same performance to me as if I upgraded the card to the 2GB or 4GB card?  If so I feel really stupid right now...
    I am, my 2011 27" iMac with a 512GPU supports Airplay and 2 AppleTV's perfectly!

  • Thinkpad w510 video card died?

    Hi
    1. So i own W510. Some days ago video card stopped working in the middle of watching streaming video. It works fine in safe mode but when i use video driver it crashes right on login to windows. I was using windows 8. Also if i deinstall drivers - it works just fine.
I tried clean install of windows 7. Fan and heatsink are totally clean. BIOS is latest, since months ago.
I tried lenovo drivers on both of the systems. I tried removing each of the 4 ram modules. Tried memtest. I also tried nvidia current, beta and also older nvidia drivers on both systems. I'm a computer tech so i'm pretty sure i tried to isolate every possible software issue... It just crashes with nvidia related BSOD. Is my video card dead? I had that overheating problem of GPU reaching ~85 degrees during work sometimes, like in some other threads i've seen on this forum...
    2. My warranty expired some months ago. I want to buy an extension warranty. Website says "There are currently no Service Offerings for this system.". I live in israel and when i call IBM israel - they give me number of lenovo israel. I call lenovo - nobody picks up. Please advice? I'm panicking, its way too expensive laptop just to "die"
    Thanks!
[update] After the computer way lying away for a couple of days - i was able to boot it and everything works. Its sort of not normal, i have to get it checked. My second question about extended warranty still applies. And would be really nice to hear some thoughts about the video issue.
[post update] It just crashed again with the same issue after like 5-10 minutes of working. Maybe its related to it heating up and a PCB loses some contact or something. video_tdr_failure nvlddmkm.sys BSOD. And now again, after half an hour of being off it was able to start. After 5-10 minutes of being on it hanged, flashed and then showed a "Video driver succesfully recovered" message. Definetely seems like video card or video ram dying. And after some minutes it flashed the same message again twice and after a moment went into the same BSOD.

Yes that's how it looks like. Trying to get ahold of some local place/service center to get a warranty extension.
Any idea how much would it cost without a warranty?
Its i7 extreme cpu, temps get to 80-90c under loads

  • Video card upgrade options for Pavilion p6210f after 600W PSU

    Greetings,
I have a Pavilion p6210f, whose PSU I just replaced with a 600W Corsair (http://tinyurl.com/7nnjfmb). I have been trying without avail to pick an appropriate video card to take advantage of the new PSU to get some decent gaming power. Any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Chris

Take a look at these nVidia cards... GTX 550 Ti, GTX 560 Ti, GTX 650 Ti, GTX 660 Ti  and these AMD cards... Radeon HD 6850 or higher, Radeon HD 7850 or higher. Try to keep the length below 11 inches.

  • Video Card Died - which replacement for my situation?

    Hi,
I have a PM G5 - Dual 2.0 GHz and I replaced the stock card with a ATI Mac Radeon 9800 Special Edition almost 4 years ago. I have 2 17" Apple monitors (ADC connectors) and I was using one of them straight on the ADC connector on the card and then using a DVIator (DVI to ADC convertor) to plug the other monitor in the DVI plug on the card.
If you're not familiar with the card, it has a ADC and DVI output and has 256 MB. The computer started freezing up for no reason, so I did standard troubleshooting and narrowed it down to the card itself. (With everything else in the same configuration, I changed the card from the ATI back to the stock card and my freezing problem went away. With the ATI card, it would freeze up within 5 minutes of starting up.)
So, do I try to find another one of these cards, or do I go another route like getting a card with 2 DVI outputs and getting another DVIator or what? I need a card that is single slot because I have a G5 Jam from Wiebetech that lets me mount 2 hard drives in the space that would normally house the middle 2 card slots.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    - Keith

    Hi-
You don't say what your card is, so I can't recommend equivalent performance options....
Any OEM card with an ADC and DVI port will work, if you can find one.
They are around, as system pulls, and usually expensive- several hundred dollars.
The only card currently produced is the Radeon 9600 Pro PC and Mac Edition. It has 2 DVI ports.
Geforce 6800's have been available on eBay lately. That card also has dual DVI ports.

  • GP60 Video Card Upgrade Options

Hi MSI Forums! I have bought the GP60 last December, bundled with Win8, and I'm loving every moment of it, but I want my experience to be better.
Is there a possible upgrade from 64bit to 128bit 740M?
I can run dota2 on med-high settings just fine but I'm not satisfied when it comes to MMORPGs (Dragon Nest)

I don't know much of anything about the GP60 laptops.
But most likely the GPU is built into the motherboard and there is no way to upgrade the GPU at all without buying a whole new laptop.
You can verify this yourself by taking off the bottom panel (if there is one, again, I don't truly know) and checking for yourself.

  • Video Card Dead Geforce 4 ti 4600

My Video card died the other night and i was wondering if warrenty will still be valid. i was in the middle of playing return to castle wolfenstein when the computer froze so i had to turn it off. when i tured it on i got nothing but a blank screen. now i have another video card in the computer and it works fine. i took the dead one and put it in another computer with the same result i get a blank screen. now my question about warrenty is i had taken off the heatsink and put new heatsink compound between the chip and heatsink and it was done very professional. i put artic silver 3 between and none of it is near the end of the chip it's all on the metal part of the graphics chip. now when i montored it the temp was lower then before. that was a long time ago. i did that 2 days after  i bought it. now i have been using it for about 5 months. and all of a sudden it died. will i still have warrenty on it. i also have another question if i don't have warrenty can i send it in for repairs because this card cost me $550 dollers when i bought it, and whatever it costs to repair it should cost less then buying one brand new one. if you have any information that could help me on this please e-mail at unknown1337@hotmail and type Dead Geforce as the subject. thankyou in advance

when i try to fill out the rma form in pdf format all the text I write onto it is not saved, i sent the rma department an email with all the required information but not the form, and haven't heard back from that yet.   It has been about 2 days.   Is that a bad sign?  How long does it usually take to get an rma number?

  • How Multiple Video Cards Work?

Let's say I buy a MacPro with 2 video cards and I name the outputs 1 through 4. I want outputs 3 and 4 to mirror output 2, but I don't want to have to run output 2 at the same resolution as outputs 3 and 4. Is this possible?
From output 1 I want to output 1920x1200 (Dell 24" native resolution)
From output 2 I want to output 1920x1200 (Dell 24" native resolution)
From output 3 I want to output 1024x768 (Projector native resolution)
From output 4 I want to output 2560x1600 (Dell 30" native resolution)
This installation is for a church auditorium where the computer operator will have a left and right computer monitor. There will also be a projector and a confidence monitor.
Any insight into how you can assign video to different monitors will be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Chris

If you mirror displays 2, 3 and 4, 2 and 4 will only use a 1024 x 768 section in the center of the display, with a black border filling the rest of the screen.

  • Help, is my video card dead

It was a bad day and the only bright spot was my new memory arrived.
I shut down the machine, discharged my static with a wrist strap, put in the new memory and put the maching back together and turned it on. Nothing on the screen, it is blank. Arrugh!! - then I took a breath and said "don't panic".
The machine is connected to my network and Hurray, I could reach it and get files etc, just can't see anything.
I have two displays, removed one, swapped to the other port and still nothing. I thing the video card died (sob, sob...hmmm... a christmas present?..an upgrade potential??)
So what do you think: machine is running, two different monitors don't work on either video plug. Time for a replacement?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Video Cards In FCP, do they matter?

Hi, I am going to be getting a new MacPro. Do video cards make any difference in FCP?
The MacPro product page only talks about video games Motion and some other apps. No mention of FCP, so does it matter if I have an ATI Radeon 4870 1GB or and Nvidia 980GT?
    Thanks, Anil K Solanki

Hi I have a 2x2.66 Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon
    8GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM Mac Pro..
    4 TB HDD
    Final Cut Studio 3
    Blackmagic HD Decklink
    Snow Leopard
And I am looking for a Good Video Card to work with this Early Mac Pro I've searched the internet and all it shows is video cards for (early 2009 Mac Pros) 800 MHz or DDR3. Please advise which video card I can buy and where to buy it, I edit an one hour show and use Final Cut and Motion round trip for graphics. I know my MAC Pro is a little outdated but hey.. I can't afford to buy a new one (yet).
    Thanks in advance!

  • Photoshop cs5-no video card detected in GPU settings

Running photoshop cs5 on a new iMac 27in with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M video card.  Under performance preferences GPU settings is not detecting the card.  What do i need to fix??

    Same issue here.
Running the same system here with the Geforce GTX 775m. Currently running OS 10.9.5.  Photoshop CC 2014 shows no GPU detected under Preferences and all video card related options are disabled.  I've tried installing nVidia's web driver, but it's not compatible, unfortunately.  The 10.9.5 update hasn't helped either and I haven't found any further driver update from Apple.
Is there a way to force detection or manually specify video card specs?

  • Options for adding 2nd video card to MacPro 1,1?

I want to add a second video card to my Mac Pro 1,1 so I can connect a third display.
I currently have a Radeon 4870 in the PCIe x16 slot, and the three other PCI x8 slots are still open.
What are my options for adding a second ATI card to one of the PCI x8 slots? Would prefer a Mac native card that doesn't require any flashing.
I'm running latest version of OS X Lion.
    Thanks,
    Robert

You have different ways of configuring the PCIe slots, but you don't have 16x along with 3 x 8x,
    One 8x
    One 4x
    One 1x
    One 16x
    Is normal setup.
Lots of choices, if you look on Apple Store <g> (5770), or ebay: 8800GT and other 3rd party vendors.
If the 4870 uses just one aux power cable, I'd get the 5770 as primary card.
The 5770 can drive 3 displays but depends on resolution and cost of dual-link DVI if req'd.

  • Video card options for a new Mac Pro

My G5 recently died on me and I am getting ready to upgrade to a Mac Pro. My question is regarding the video card options. I will be using Aperture 2, Photoshop CS2, and Final Cut Studio, but, not doing HD work. I am trying to decide between the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB and the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB.
As my G5 has stopped working, I was not prepared for an upgrade and I am trying to cut corners where I can. Does anyone have any experience comparing these two cards? Am I being to nitpicky about a $150 upgrade? My gut feeling is that I should not be questioning the extra cost and go with the NVIDIA, but, just want to make sure that I am not wasting money for a difference I will not see, as I do not play games on my Mac. Any opinions and input from other users is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Very interesting, I went to that link and then followed the one for Pro Apps:
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper10.html
And, it states that the Radeon with less memory will consistently outperform the Nvidia on programs like Final Cut and Aperture. Guess I AM better off saving the money. Thank you for your direction!

  • MacPro Early 2008 Display/Video Card Problem

*Hello, I have a Dual Quad-Core 2.8Ghz MacPro (Early 2008) with the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB Video Card. I believe I am having the exact same symptoms listed on the topic "Mac Pro 2008 Video Card Problem".*
*MacPro has been working fine. Until one day, I power it on and the display stays black. There is nothing you can do besides holding down the power button and rebooting the computer. I have tried to do this many times and the display will not come up. I have also tried resetting the VRAM and PRAM settings - still did not work. I have had my MacPro for about one year and a half. It is in very good condition (no damage/no liquid/no overheating). From time to time, you power on the computer and the display works! It is very random. I am scared to turn off the computer or put it to sleep as this can also trigger the problem.*
*I did not get the extended AppleCare (the MacPro itself already cost me about $3400!) I tested the Cinema Display and it is fine, therefore the problem is not coming from the display.*
*I went to the Apple Store and they kept my MacPro for one night. Called me the next day telling me it was going to cost me approximately $800 in order to fix this problem. They claimed that either my Bluetooth module or my Main Logic Board was causing the display not to show. I am out of warranty, and I think it is very expensive. I am doing my research online in order to try and find a cheaper solution. After reading the discussions and checking out some other websites. I have a few questions:*
*If I buy a NEW* ATI Radeon HD 2600 and install it in my MacPro - will it fix my problem?*
*OR - I also heard about the ATI Radeon HD 4870 - Is that graphic card compatible with my MacPro - will that resolve the problem?*
*Do you think I should give it a shot? Are there any other things I can try?*
*I am thinking that I should try to replace the graphic card first and see if that is causing the problem instead of replacing the Main Logic Board right away (which will cost me over $500)*
*Please let me know of any thoughts that come in mind. I really need some support. I am a college student studying Audio Engineering and I use my MacPro everyday on Pro Tools and Logic. This machine is my life.*
    *Thank You,*
    *Kevin C.*

Glad you solved your problem Gaunja. Here's an update on my own.
When last heard from I had diagnosed the failure of my displays to boot up to graphics card problem in my early 2008 Mac Pro with my stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 by swapping out the same card from my son's Mac Pro and seeing the displays boot up fine. Before heading off to the Apple store for a new card I reinstalled my suspect video card just to see what would happen. The displays booted up fine. Now, two weeks later, again no video display--black screens--no signal from the graphics card. I rebooted the computer several times to no avail and was, again, about to head off to the Apple store for a new card. This time "just to see what would happen" I moved the graphics card to another slot and bingo, the displays are up. What can be determined from my experience to date?
    1. The graphics card is flirting with death. Like a patient unwilling to die, through a mysterious force, it rallies to live another day.
    2. The slot the card came installed in is unreliable--it's dirty, there's a spec of dust in there, a contact has degraded after two years, or some other slot related fault. Note that, until the card failed for the first time, it had never been removed from it's slot, the computer was treated gently, and it operated in a very clean environment.
If anyone has another theory about what may be happening here please feel free. I fully expect the displays to go dark again at some point as my suspicions are that it's the card itself that is the problem. The two replacement cards I'm considering are the ATI Radeon HD 4870 or the Nividia Geo Force GT120. I've read that both work with the early Mac Pros. Some complain that the ATI card is noisy and expensive. Based of Gaunja's post and others I think the Nividia card will suit my needs, be quieter, and cost less. But, for now, my stock ATI Radeon 2600 lives!
Just one man's experience with the "Mac Pro display, black screen" problem.

  • New Video Card options

I have a first generation MacPro with the ATI Radeon X1900 and I have been experiencing some issues. First, my computer has been making a lot of noise from a fan, and I have read in several places that this has often been the ATI video cards. Also, recently I have been experiencing some issues with rendering in my applications. I play World of Warcraft, and lately when it rains in the game, it starts looking fuzzy. It could be a problem with the software, but with the fan issue I am more inclined to just replace the card and hopefully fix both issues.
About two months ago the signal from my Mac to my monitor gave out entirely. When that happened, I called the Apple Store and they told me any PCI-Express video card would be compatible, so I picked up an Nvidea GeForce 8800 GT. It did not fix the problem and I brought it into the Apple Store and they determined it was the video controller on the motherboard that caused the issue. However, they were not able to get the Nvidea card to work with my computer, so I just went back to the ATI card after that.
So, after all that, my question is what Video cards are compatible with the first generation Mac Pro on OS X version 10.4.11, and are there extra steps I have to do to get the hardware to work? Are there drivers or software I need to download before swapping out the cards?
    Thank you,
    Tim

    Your choices are:
X1900 for $399 if you stay with 10.4.11
    Radeon 3870 requires 10.5.4 retail $215
8800GT requires 10.5.3 direct from Nvidia or Apple, two models, one for EFI64 (2008) and the one you want for 2006/7 EFI32 models.
