MacPro 13in Mid 2009 VERY Slow "Kernel_Task" 500+ MB memory

I have loved my MacPro for years, however, after upgrading to Yosemite the performance is horrible. Can anyone help me understand what I can do to improve the performance?  Safari takes forever to connect, and I often just get the lovely color wheel.
I have checked my Internet and it is working great on other items.  The only issue is this MacPro.  Kernel_Task seems to be eating a ton of memory at times when I am having the most issues, but I am not even sure that that is.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nothings wrong with kernel_task using a lot of memory. That's normal.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.

  • Macbook air mid 2009 very slow

    Hello,
    I recently bought a Macbook Aid mid 2009 with 2 GB ram, 120GB Sata and 1.86GHZ Core2Duo.
I'm running on OS X 10.9.3 since I bought it.
The laptop is loading very slow many times and I noticed 'kerner_task' taking alot of CPU and RAM.
I'm wondering if my laptop is not good enough for OS X 10.9.3 (this is my first Mac).
Ia there anything I can do?
    Thank you

Yours is the first computer I've heard about on these forums that is attempting to run Mavericks with only 2GB of RAM.
Indeed that is acceptable per the Mavericks requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842
... but as you may know, Apple has not sold computers with as little as 2GB RAM for quite a while.
I suggest therefore you make sure you remove any applications that may be overtaxing your machine.  Examples are browsers other than Safari, Mac cleaning products (such as Mac Keeper), or any other non-Apple app that has some startup process running (such as Outlook).

  • Macbook pro mid 2012 very slow - hardware?

    Hi there,
usually all challenges I have to face with my apple devices are pretty solvable with google but this one brings me to despair.  Perhaps somebody can help me out.
    The situation:
Since I started to use apple devices I am using a MBP Mid 2009 and besides that it is a little bit slower than in it's first days it works like a clockwork. My girlfriend (also working in the IT industry and knowing how to treat a computer) has the problem that her MBP Mid 2012 was extremely slowing down three weeks ago. It was getting so slow in a few day that every click she does results in a minute of watching the beach volleyball of doom.
Due to the fact that every action on the GUI was enormous fast and every action taken which demands data from the hard drive was causing the beach volleyball, made me think that there has to be an error on the hard drive. (originally intern drive: Toshiba)
It turns out that it wasn't that easy to solve, here is what we did:
    First approach was:
    Resetting the RAMs
Repairing the access rights of the hard drive and all the stuff you can find on google.
I tried to boot from recovery and format the internal hard drive
here was the problem that we weren't able to format the partition.
also trying to use time machine resulted in an error and wasn't able to finish
Next thing: I installed another hard drive (Western Digital) on the internal sata port which worked fine for about 3 years in my macbook and was, until I formatted it for it's new purpose, working very fine as external drive.
additionaly I build a Yosemite boot stick to reinstall it on the WD HDD.
I wasn't able to reinstall Yosemite using the boot stick and trying to install the OS while the WD drive was attached to the internal sata port.
next I changed the drives back: Toshiba internal, WD fresh formatted by my MBP Mid 2009 external
next I tried to install Yosemite freshly on the WD which was now attached over USB and that worked very well and the MBP Mid 2012 was running like new although that I accessed the HDD over a slow USB port.
The next step was the following: I used the latest time machine backup on the WD drive while it was attached external over USBthat worked very well
After that I did the following: I changed the drives back: WD with time machine backup internal, Toshiba drive attached over USB external.
first I tried to boot from the internal port which had the WD drive attached. That resulted in a gray screen with an crossed circle.
next I tried to boot over the USB port the original unchanged Toshiba drive. That worked great and there was no sign of the beach volley ball.
In my eyes that excluded the fact that the Toshiba hard drive has any hardware damages.
After that I was calling the apple customer service but they had also no clue what the problem could be.
I told them that I suggest an hardware error between the hard drive and the logic board
The only advice they had for me was to deactivated Filevalt on the Toshiba drive
So I deactivated Filevalt and changed back the Toshiba drive on the internal sata drive.
For the very first moment the problem seemed to be solved.
After about 1 hour of usage the behavior was back and the MBP wasn't able to use again.
So my last approach on the problem was the Apple Hardware Test (AHT)I was running the test normal and in extended mode and both times it told me no hardware errors found.
So long story short the questions:
If AHT sais no hardware problem found, could there anyhow a damaged part?
Has anyone any suggestion what I could do to solve this damned problem?
Thanks for reading and thank you very much vor any kind of advice or hint.
    Greetings from Germany

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Macbook pro mid 2009 running slow

okay so i have a macbook pro 15 inch from mid 2009. my hard drive recently crashed and i bought a new 750 gb hard drive and installed mountain lion software. got my computer running but now my computer is constantly acting slow and showing the beach ball a lot. i have barely used any memory on the new harddrive and i am wondering if there is anyway i can fix it or if my computer is running slow because it is older and mountain lion is simply to new for it. also i know that i need to replace my battery but i am not sure if that has anything to do with my computer running slow.

  • MacBook Pro 2009 very slow and extremely hot

My MacBook Pro 2009 is lately getting extremely hot and is very slow with frequent stalling. Does anyone have any idea?

You can first try to clean up all of the old system files and cache files left behind. Also, try to debloat it. I generally use an app called Detox My Mac which works really well. My mac was doing the same thing and it cleaned it up and i've had no problems since then. I made an article on it if you want to read it and get a download link. Here it is: http://www.softwarestogo.com/speed-up-your-mac-with-detox-my-mac/

  • Mac Mini very slow at 4 gig memory, upgrade to 16 still slows down but takes a longer time

I bought a Mac mini a year ago. With an i7 and i terabyte and it cam with only 4 gig of ram. It worked fine for a while and i installed some apps then it started to get very slow. seeing the colorful "hourglass " turn round and round quite a few times. Then i went to the activity monitor where it told me that the memory used was about 3.89 gigs. I purchased a memory cleaner app from thr app store which helped a bit.
Today i upgraded to 16 gig memory and bang my computer ripped. The activity manager said i was using 6 gigs of ram and had 9.8 remaining.
after being on the internet for a couple of hours and using Firefox with about ten tabs open the computer started to get very slow again.
I checked the activity manager and it read 6 gigs used and the cash read a whopping 9 gigs. Did not think i would need the memory cleaner any more but after doing a clean it worked better.
Why did i get a whopping 9 gigs in the cash ? which is what it read after my computer slowed down again.

You may want to post in the Mac Mini forum, this is the iMac forum. If you would like me to I will ask the moderator to move the thread.

  • MPB mid-2010 very slow after Yosemite upgrade from Snow Leopard

I updated my MPP (mid-2010) from Snow Leopard to Yosemite some weeks back. It is painfully slow since, particularly when Mail is open. I attach the etrecheck output below, but would really appreciate any help in recovering what was not-so-long-ago a very useful machine.
    EtreCheck version: 2.1.5 (108)

Your Mac has been considerably altered from its factory configuration. Given certain modifications, some of which are described below, it is not reasonable to expect it to operate properly.
    1. Back up your Mac. Your report indicates the last backup was performed a month ago. No more backups can be created because the backup volume's capacity is insufficient.
    2. Uninstall any McAfee products. Your Mac cannot operate properly with it installed.
One or both of these removal instructions may be applicable.
How to install or uninstall McAfee Internet Security for Mac
How to uninstall and reinstall McAfee Agent 4.x on Macintosh computers
    3. Your Mac has been affected by MacPaw "CleanMyMac". Uninstall it, but beware its uninstallation instructions are not completely effective. Depending on exactly what you used it to do, a complete erasure and reconfiguration may be required.
    4. Update OS X. Open the App Store and install all Apple recommended updates.
    5. If you require a VPN I recommend OS X's native VPN, not Cisco's flawed implementation of it.
    6. If you elect to use Adobe Flash Player you must keep it maintained. The version installed is outdated.
    7. If you elect to use Google's products you must accept the detrimental effects they will have on a Mac's performance.
    8. Adware is installed and will interfere with Internet browsing. For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended solution read How to install adware.

  • MBP (mid-2009) freezing, slow installations and file transfer

I bought the latest MacBook Pro model and installed Snow Leopard on a cleanly formatted hard drive. I have tried migrating via ethernet and FireWire from my iMac, but the migrations failed either due to freezing (via FireWire after roughly 24 hours of file transfer) or by an error message (ethernet with Migration Assistant).
Only through a Time Machine backup was I able to transfer my account files to the MBP, which again totaled at over 20 hours of transferring. The system was a mess, clogged constantly by freezing and spinning beach balls of death for durations lasting around 10-20 seconds during which music would clip after 5-10 seconds of everything not responding, this being accentuated especially during installations. I decided to format and try anew.
Now I've formatted the hard drive, installed Snow Leopard and will transfer my files manually onto a clean account. Installations take a long time although SL installation is within 30 minutes, iLife took 1.5 hours to install 5 GB. During the installation Safari stopped responding, as did the entire system, and the spinning beach ball would keep spinning. Watching a 480p trailer in Quicktime made the entire computer freeze up (no video/audio) for 10 seconds halfway. Transferring 136 GB (my Music folder) will take around 15 hours according to the estimate after 10 minutes of transferring.
I've sold my iMac now and all I have are the files on my external hard drive. I want to get them onto my MBP ASAP but the slowness is preventing me from doing what needs to be done and it's very frustrating. When I try to boot into Hardware Testing by holding D down the computer doesn't do it no matter what (Application DVD in or not, plugged into power or not). I've tried resetting PRAM but I get the same inaction.
    Any ideas?
Edit: I've done Disk Utility to no avail, it finds nothing wrong.

Installed, still getting freezes with spinning beach balls. Transfer says it would take 1 hour opposed to that 15 hours, but it stops transferring after X amount of gigabytes (from 0.5 to 5), not do anything for a while and then continue, stretching the estimate to over 2 hours after some time. I don't know if this is just with the hard drive.
The freeze-ups are frustrating as **** and make for a very poor experience. Any ideas to get to the bottom of this? I still haven't been able to boot into the Hardware Test no matter how much I try.

  • CVI 2009 Very slow installation of distribution kits

I'm having an issue with distribution kits built with CVI 2009 taking a long time to install on some PCs.  In the installer, the progress bars will both be completely full, with the top one displaying "Overall Progress" "Currently Installing [application name].  Part 1 of 1."  The bottom bar displays nothing.  During this time, there is usually a few instances of msiexec.exe sucking up considerable CPU time according to Task Manager, and the disk does not appear busy.  If I wait several minutes (sometimes 10 minutes or more), it will eventually move on, with the next step displaying "Validating Install..." on the bottom progress bar.  This only happens on some PCs, other ones install in a reasonable amount of time (less than a minute).  Once the installation is complete, everything appears to have worked and the installed software runs fine.  The only pattern I've noticed that the PCs that show this problem tend to be older models.  One is a P4 3.2Ghz desktop with 1.5GB of ram, and the other is a Core Duo (not sure about speed at the moment) Dell laptop with 2GB of ram.  Both are running Windows XP SP3.
Any insight into this would be appreciated, as some of the PCs that show this are ones used for testing software packages and often having things installed onto them.  Thanks.

    Hi tstanley,
I was wondering what you were running distribution kits from - hard drive, CD, network or USB stick?

  • Mid 2009 macbook slow since yosemite upgrade

I am getting a little tired of the spinning beach ball, my formerly well performing macbook is so slow since I upgraded it.
I have 4Gb ram, activity monitor suggests I am not low on that.
It is particularly slow when I start up anything new; when an email comes in the whole thing grinds to a halt.
3rd party programs like Chrome seem to be sucking the life out of it, I have checked it is up to date and it is.
Is this a common experience and what have others done to speed things up?
System spec: Yosemite version 10.10, processor 2.13 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb SDRAM
    15Gb disk space free.
    I have repaired disk permissions.
    Maura

The large number of problems with System items looks suspicious: I'd strongly suggest a reinstall of Yosemite. (Make sure that you have a backup of all your files; e.g. a Time Machine backup.)

  • Very Slow Mac Mini / Decreasing Memory?

    Hi,
Unfortunatly I'm having a problem with my Mac Mini. For an unknown reason my Mac Mini (Mac OS X 10.6, Snow Leopard) has been running extemely slow the last few days. I have reset the Mac a countless number of times now and done everything I can think of to fix the problem. I have noticed that occasionally the Mac will work fine for a few minutes, until suddenly the free space on my Macintosh HD will start to decrease. Roughly 1 or 2 GB of free space starts to disappear every few minutes. Please could someone offer me some help. I would be extremely greatful.
    Thanks a lot,

    Thanks for the welcome.
The only thing I am running is Finder. For the first 3-4 minutes though everything is fine, no matter what I run (e.g. Internet...). The problem only occurs when the Macintosh HD available free space starts to randomly decrease every few minutes.

  • Re: "Very Slow Internet On OSX 10.5.5"

    Hello all,
I am creating my own thread in response to ones like rogerjth's July 2008, the subject of which was "Slow Browsing with safari 3.1.2 - Any issues to watch out for?" and Roippeli's from Sep. 21, 2008, the subject of which was "Very Slow Internet On OSX 10.5.5 / Works Fine on XP. Since many people on the forum have been having the same problems and, like myself, have been unable to resolve them by the same methods that seem to have fixed the problem for the majority of people (hence the issue topic being marked "answered" because the topic was indeed answered, but only for the OP), I decided to start this thread again.
I have been having the same problems as Roippeli and rogerjth for over a week now, and despite having searched the forums exhaustively, I am unable to fix them. I have tried every suggestion, including all of those made by Klaus 1 (emptying cache, resetting Safari, deleting specified files from Home/Library/Preferences and "/"/Safari, adding DNS numbers, scanning for trojan viruses - of which there were none - creating an OpenDNS account and configuring both my router and my PB to utilize OpenDNS), which seem to have solved the problems for many. However, after a short period of subtle yet marked increases in speed, I am back to the same place that I was before taking these steps. Intermittent connection, slow speeds, the works. I'm now ready to smash the router. Help!

same problem here on a macpro. but only since today, i updated to 10.5.5 a week ago or so when it came out and had no problems until today. the moment i started my macpro internet connection was very slow (with safari, firefox & mail), but the airport network itself seems to be fine though (tried by copying files from a network disk).
everything else connected to the same network works fine (iphone, other macs without 10.5.5)
i posted in a german forum too and there are some others having the same problem.
the question is : why today ??? i didn't change anything serious lately.
i'm currently trying to download the combo update again and safari standalone but i get one timeout after the other.
also tried to repair rights, p-ram reset, safari reset - nothing helped.

  • HT1338 my mac pro started running very slow not all the time it is only 2 months old

My new macpro has been running very slow off and on (mostly on) it is only 2 months old I took it into the genius bar and they could not find anything wrong.  I took it home and it ran fine for a short while then started up again. I have watched activity monitor and can see no direct corellation.  Anyone have any ideas?

Did you install anything new lately?
Run any programs that purport to "clean", "speed up", or "optimize" your Mac

  • Steps in upgrading HDD to SSD on Macbook Pro 13 Mid 2009

I need help in upgrading the RAM and Storage in my MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2009. I have bought 8GB Memory and 512 GB SSD from Crucial.com. I have watched a lot of Youtube Videos on how to install them but I am afraid I am still missing some things I need to do.
I have created a back up on an external drive and have been updating it regularly. I have also created a back up on Time Machine (I think I did).
Is there anything else I need to do? How about the OSX? Do I need to create a back up for it? Or is it part of the back up I have on an external drive?
    Please help! Thank you.

    Check this out:
    http://macintoshhowto.com/repair/back-up-computer.html
Once you think you've done it correctly restart and hold down the option key or go to "System Preferences" under the Apple and look at "Startup Disk".
That will tell which Disks are bootable.
    Now about that Crucial drive:

It's not clear to me that this issue was resolved. The last post goes nowhere!
    I always use OWC:

Just did two including this MacBook Pro early 2011 13" and a 2012 Mini. Total no-brainer! The way I like it.
