MacPro 2.66 Quad Xeon due in today for evaluation for my company

as we are an ad agency, I will be buying a five more of these this year, assuming Adobe gets CS3 in the pipeline. (I have PhotoShop CS3 beta). My (open ended) question is:
What should I look out for - I have been a G5 guy forever, will do a target disk xfer of files and apps, am sure several will need serials re-entered, etc. Are there any "be sure to" or "watch out for" moments coming my way or should I just dive in and see what happens? Kind of a silly question, I know, but looking for those who may have had similar situations.
Thanks
Joe

Search for "Kappy" and "Migration Assistant" What happens though, is, if you use MA to bring over PPC apps, your Mac Pro will run like molasses, literally. Very sluggish.
Sounds like you use LittleSnitch to watch who calls out?
Along with 4 x 1GB RAM or more, and replace the OEM drive (might want to downgrade and get small 160GB) the Mac Pro exceeds G5 in performance.
With CS3, and tie-in to Leopard, possibility of a next-gen Radeon, and Xeon 53xx's should be a full year.

Specifically, you must have the following to update to Mountain Lion:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)

  • Performance upgrade for Lightroom and Photoshop on a MacPro Quad Xeon

I have a MacPro Quad Xeon 2.26(on OSX 10.5.8) with an internal 1tb RAID 0 for a PS scratch. It has 8gb of RAM and I run my apps off the main (boot) drive. My LR cache resides on this boot drive as well. I have dual ACD 23's each running off a GeForce GT 120.
I'm looking for opinions and options to make my life faster.
    1. upgrade to 10.6?
    2. RAM up to 16gb?
    3. OWC Mercury Pro SSD 115gb for my boot and a second for my user files?
I have been reading Diglloyd's stuff but I'm looking for other opinions on cheap speed.
    thanks in advance

Have you ever cracked open activity monitor? Unless your CPU's regularly peak out, they aren't your weak link.
Congratulations - they are also the most expensive to replace since you basically have to buy a new computer! I'd start with the hard drives - absolutely the slowest link in any modern computer. Start off with an SSD for the system/Applications. Then try moving files you are working on to the SSD to see if that makes a difference as well. I don't know about LightRoom, but with Aperture, once the database files in the Aperture library fragment it's performance drops off dramatically. Changing my Aperture library to be on an SSD and referencing my masters on my internal RAID made a dramatic difference. It feels like I have a new computer!
If you have lots of scratch activity you could be low on memory. Or you could be dealing with photoshop wonkiness like this:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshopCS5-Warmup.html
Throwing hardware at software coding errors like the above won't get you anywhere.
Start with activity monitor. If you aren't routinely maxing out your CPU's focus on disk drives and then memory.

  • Memory choices for Xserve 2.8 Quad Xeon

    I have a Xserve 2.8 Quad Xeon with 4 of 1 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMMs.
I want to upgrade its memory to 8 GB and wandering which of the following options I should pick.
    1. buy four of 1 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM (4GB Kit FB (4 x 1GB) DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) 128x72 CL5 1.8v 240 Pin ECC FBDIMM (FullyBuffered)) --- for $198
    2. buy two of 4 GB (8GB Kit (2 x 4GB) DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) 512x72 CL5 1.8v 240 Pin ECC FBDIMM (FullyBuffered))----for $258
    My questions are:
    1. Is it true that we shouldn't mix different size of RAM modules? A document on http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/XserveEarly2008_DIY_FB-DIMMMemory.pdf seems to say OK to mix but fill the first four slots with identical modules. "For the best performance, use identical DIMMs in all slots and fill up slots 1 through 4 before you install DIMMs in slots 5 through 8. If you don’t have eight identical DIMMs, install identical DIMMs in slots 1 through 4 and a second set of four identical DIMMs in slots 5 through 8. If you can, after you fill slots 1 through 4, add a full set of four DIMMs in slots 5 through 8 instead of just a pair in slots 5 and 6."
    2. Should all RAM modules installed be the same brand and from the same production batch?
I don't want to throw away my current four 1 GB RAMs. But if I fill all the slots with a new set of four 1 GB RAMs, I won't have more room to upgrade. For $60 more, I think it's worth getting two of 4 GB RAMs.
If installing non-identical RAMs is not an issue, I may buy two of 4 GB modules. Use these two new one for now. When its price drops or more memory is required, I'll buy two of 4 GB modules and then put my current four 1 GB chips in slot 5 to 8.
    Please comment. Thanks.

    1. Is it true that we shouldn't mix different size of RAM modules?
I do know that the reason behind matching four identical DIMMs in the bank is that you get memory interleaving which boosts the performance. What amount if performance increase that may be, I don't have a reference for. Nor do I know what the detriment of installing only two DIMMs in the bank would be..
    2. Should all RAM modules installed be the same brand and from the same production batch?
It would be best if they were all the same brand to reduce the chance of timing errors. More important is that they come from a reputable maker and are guaranteed to work in the XServe.
Now, since you're not opposed to spending $60 more for the 2x4GB kit, how about a 4x2GB kit for just a little more? 12GB of RAM, interleaved...

  • Bay 1 or bay 2 when installing a 120gig SSD Boot drive with 10.8 into a MacPro 3.2Ghz Quad core ?

Im about to install a 120gig SSD into a MacPro 3.2Ghz Quad core. It shipped with a 1TB Hitachi Ultrastar HDD Sata III, that runs 10.7 and is the boot disk running form bay #1. I plan to run 10.8 on the new SSD and use that as the boot disk.
Should I swap over the Hitachi HDD and SSD so that new SSD boot drive is in bay #1 ? If so am I correct that it would be okay to download and install Mountain Lion on the SSD using bay #2 first and then swap them over once installed ?

Thanks. FYI the planned build is this...
Bay 2 - BOOT DRIVE. 120gig SSD running OS 10.8 plus all apps (although not sure whether to wait a while regarding upgrade to 10.8 ? )
So far Im quite happy with 10.7.3 and the machine seems very stable
Bay 1 - 1TB HDD running OS 10.7.3 (so can boot from this HDD disk if required to should the SSD fail (if or when ). This is disk already running 10.7.3 as boot disk now.
Bay 3 & 4 - On horizon...    x2 1TB Western Digital Black Caviar HDD set up with RAID '0' stripe. Not sure on whether to use a RAID 0 or not yet....    Might just go with one 2TB drive... TBC.
BACKUP:  3tb external HDD or Synology DS411j NAS drive
So from what I understand once I've installed the OS on to the new SSD along with any apps, use Carbon Copy Cloner to make an fresh image before I use the system...    is that correct ???

  • Faster Processor: 3.5ghz quad i7 vs 3.7ghz quad Xeon?

    Which Processor is faster?
    3.5ghz quad i7 vs 3.7ghz quad Xeon?
So which is the faster processor for Logic X?
I think Logic supports hyper threading also....
It's basically iMac maxed out vs base level Mac Pro...
Which would be better for Logic Pro... How much faster at a guess do you think it will be?
I don't really need a top monitor and don't really need to graphics cards what do you suggest i go for?

If you will be using resource intensive applications in a vocational context frequently, the faster CPU will probably pay for it self.
If you are an avocational user, for the overwhelming majority of usage, there will little of any difference in performance when using most applications.  It then becomes more of a question of bragging rights.
To put it another way, if you live in the country, a Ferrari makes sense but not so in the center of Manhattan.
    Ciao.

  • OS10.4 on MacPro 2x2.8 Quad-Core

    Hi,
I just get my New MacPro 2x2.8 Quad-Core.
    Question:
~Am i posible to install OS 10.4 in one of my Partition Internal Disk? That's because one of my hardware driver are only support 10.4!
~The Startup Disk of OS 10.4 that i swap from my G5 able to boot it from my new MacPro?
    Thanks.

...is that really hard to answer?
Ray, I also answered you when I said:
No. Macs can only install and boot from the operating system they shipped with and newer.
Is there some part of that series of two sentences you don't understand? That was my initial response. Your Mac shipped with 10.5. In what way is 10.4 newer than 10.5? It is not. Plain, and simple. Logically you should have been able to infer what I meant when I said that.
And no, Boot Camp won't let you run 10.4.
    Edit:
And I have every reason to be frustrated, when you ask the same question over again, when I've already answered it once. If you wanted me to clarify what I meant when I said newer, or find out if 10.4 was newer than 10.5, I would have answered. But no, you persisted to act as if I gave you no answer whatsoever!

As per the above mentioned i could find the that there is differene in the account balances in FBL5N report and due date analysis for customers. Where as FBL1N and the vendor due date analysis figure in the report are same.
Just want to know why is difference in customer related.
Require a immediate reply.....please help me
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
I could not understand which report you compared with s_alr_87012172.
Have you tried matching FD10N and FBL5N.  If not matching, then there could be problem with authorizations in FBL5N.
From report S_ALR_87012168, you can also drill down to view the line items.  Hence if you drill down and list the line items, it will give you some clue.
Try whether if any parked documents are included in FBL5N.
Also ensure that in report S_ALR_87012168, Database is selected in Data sources.

  • Due date analysis for G/L account

    Hy!
I need to make a report that makes due date analysis for G/L accounts similar to S_ALR_87012078 Due date analysis for open items
    for Account payable.
Has any one experience with that and can help me with that?
    Regards,
    Marina

    Hi Marina,
its a bit surprising why you require due date analysis for GL accounts as GL accounts are used for realtime posting and no credit involved. Only AR and AP accounts contain credit, so they may be even over due and thus we require ageing or due date analysis.
If transaction is on a cash basis should be posted to GL not to Subledger. Since there is no due date system for GL posting due date is not possible which makes sense too.
Hope this gets a better clarity for you.
    Regards
