MacPro 3,1 showing up as 1,1

After terrible power issues over the weekend, one of our macPros was unbootable this morning. After pulling all third party ram, and reinitializing the hard drive we installed lion again from the recovery partition. The machine wouldn't upgrade from lion, however, because it reported that it woudn't support either moutnain lion or mavericks.  It had been upgraded to mavericks a few weeks prior to the power problems.
It would appear that the machine is self-reporting that it's a MacPro 1,1 rather than the 3,1 that it actually is.
We've tried everything we could think of or find online.  Zapping PRAM/NVRAM did nothing. Nor did holding down the SMC reset button on the motherboard. Even trying to re-flash the EFI from a firmware reset disk was rebuffed (presumably because the mac thought it was the wrong version for the hardware).
Does anyone know how to reset this to its proper setting?
I thought perhaps pulling ram might force the system to reassess itself, but it only changed the available ram value, not the Model Identifier in the Hardware Overview section of "about this mac".
I understand that I could use something like chameleon to mask this info, but I'd rather fix it than go down that road.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

By your comment, I'm guessing that this is highly unusual.  It felt that way to me too. I was hoping to avoid the apple store zoo this time of year.
Oddly enough, the serial number appears in the window though I haven't cross referenced it with the case to see if it's right.
Thank you kindly for the reply.

  • 2011 MacPro freezes and shows several multiple pink lines

My 2-month-'old' MacBook Pro suddenly freezes and shows multpile vertical lines and makes loud beeping noises.
When I manually reboot, again it freezes mid-boot and I have to reboot again.
The second time I reboot, it successfully starts up.
This is the third time it has happened in 3 hours!!

I sincerely hope there is nothing major wrong with the computer. :-/
It is running OS X 10.6.7

    Hello-
I had a static issue like this a few Years ago with a Sony Point and Shoot Digital Camera not long after its warranty ended. Unfortunately the fix was replacing the Optical Sensor which cost more than a newer model. Time to Visit the Genius Bar. • MacPro Ethernet shows no connection

MacPro won't show a connection to Ethernet. I can plug my MacBook into the Ethernet cable and it will work fine, so I thought it might be the Ethernet plug on the MacPro. I took the MacPro to the Apple Store, they plugged it in and it worked fine (both Ethernet plugs). Got home plugged it and still won't show that anything is plugged in.
Here are some of the things I have tried to fix it:
    Restarted many time.
    Started up from another drive.
    Changed Ethernet cables.
    Repaired permissions.
Connected straight to cable modem instead of going through airport extreme.
Unplugged cable modem and airport extreme to let reset.
I don't have airport card in my macpro so I really need to fix it, it's my main computer that iPhone, iPad and apple runs from and backups.

Well left the computer off all night and when I started up the ethernet showed up. Not sure what the problem was but it's working for now.

  • 2nd Monitor with KVM switch

    hi,
i work for a major broadcast company who use a MacPros for trade shows (NAB, IBC etc) with a mirrored output.
monitor two goes directly into a 23" Cinema Display.
monitor one goes onto a geffen KVM to a 42" panasonic plasma running at the same resolution as the cinema display.
when we switch back to the mac from another computer the cinema display seems to run an autodetect again and takes sometimes up to 30secs to detect, correct and return to use (so we can keep using the k+m).
does anyone know a way to disable this autodetect? i can't seem to find anything, neither can the apple people i've spoken to. i've tried using a single geffen DVI splitter but with similar results.
    thanks

i think i can get hold of some to test. thanks.
is there no unix code i can apply to disable the autodetect? i've applied code for various other "niggles" we've had to great success, i'm just not sure about this one.
    thanks.

  • What's the best way to start over?

    Hi everyone,
I bought a new internal HDD to replace my main drive that is failing. Other post of mine detail where I have been with issues but anyway...
Here is my current HDD set up:
Bay #1: The failing WD 1 TB Green (10.5.5) which is going back for a refund.
Bay #2: Newly bought/installed WD 1 TB caviar black.
Bay #3: Back up WD 1TB Green (10.4.10) that serves as a back up but I am using it to perform the formating at the moment since the other HDDs are unreliable.
Bay #4: Original WD 250 GB (10.5.5) that came with the MacPro but strated showing signs of failure.
As soon as I started up the Mac I got a message asking what I wanted to do with the newly installed HDD in Bay #2. I obviously pressed Initialize and Disk Utility openned up.
I chose the Option to name and to zero out the drive 1st with a 1 pass zero out. I am wondering though, would it have been better to Verify and Repair the new Disk 1st before zeroing it out with Disk Utility?

    Hi hatter,
Ok. So I slept on it...Sometimes a rest, a fresh point of view or a renewal of patience can help not to give up...
Here is what I did this morning:
    1) Tried booting from last night's Cloned main drive again but OS X 10.5.5 still won't boot from the new WD 1 TB Caviar Black (10.5.5) - Endless swirling wheel and aternating blue and light blue screen.
    2) I did a cold shut down again.
    3) I did a little swich in the drive bays:
    Bay# 1: WD 1 TB Black Caviar (10.5.5 - not booting)
Bay# 2: WD 500 GB Caviar SE16 (10.4.10 - partitionned in 1/2 to hold Windows XP on the 2nd partition).
    Bay# 3: WD 1 TB Green (10.4.10 - backup boot drive)
Bay# 4: WD 250 GB Caviar (10.5.5 - original drive that came with the MacPro but started the hole failing issues and was the main drive with all apps and files)
    4) I booted into Windows XP and used WD Lifeguard Diagnostics Utility and it reported that all drives are OK. But they're not !!! Argh !
    5) For the heck of it, I tried booting into the original failing WD 250 GB Caviar (10.5.5) that holds all original apps and folders, and I got in...*** !!!
    6) I booted back into the WD 1 TB Green back up drive (10.4.10) and decided to try and SuperDuper the original failing 250 GB drive to clone it onto the WD 1 TB Caviar Black and erasing the previous trial. It took about 1 1/2 hour.
    7) I booted into the Black drive again and I finally got in!!! Can I trust this?

  • CC and incorrect clocks?

CC keeps telling me that my MacPro's clock is incorrect. However, the MacPro's clock shows the same time/date as my cell phone. As a result I have to log in each time to use PS.  Any idea of how to solve this problem?

  • HighPoint RocketRAID Quad eSATA 6GB/s for Mac 644

I have successfully installed the hardware and driver. And connected to an external enclosure with eSata cable.
When I try to start up MacPro, the monitor shows the prohibitary sign, circle and slash.
I assume there is some conflicts between computer, RAID card, or the external enclosure but am unable to tell.
Can you tell if my MacPro is compatible with the card?

Mac Pro 4,1 (2009) then you likely are not using 64-bit kernel, which is always an issue having to have 64-bit clean drivers. though that is what the prophitory sign would seem to signal.
Me preference is to always when possible use native SATA enclosures, they don't have issues, and you get the full bandwidth and performance.
An Apple tech article vanishes, and leaves us with a "404 we're sorry" doesn't cut it, why not leave and say it is superceeded or there was a fix in 10.6.4 instead?
Well, the original had this to say:
There is/was a tech note warning about an issue with Oxford chipset and affecting those quad-interface cases. (Not that there haven't been issues with these before, but that was when they were used connected to a PCI Express SATA controller).
    From Hardmac:
    Apple TechNote

the new Mac Pro 2010 compatibility with some Oxford OXUF934DSB usually found in quad interface enclosures (eSATA/USB/Firewire 400/8000). According to Apple, such drives would randomly refuse to automatically mount when booting the Mac Pro Apple. To fix the problem, you will need to wait for couple of second after booting the Mac Pro before turning the external HD on. A solution will most probably be found soon, either via a firmware update of the controller, or a driver update.

  • All my calendars disappeared from my phone

My calendars and events have suddenly disappeared from my iPhone 4s.  Everything is still on the MacPro but nothing shows up in the calendar program.  No settings have been changed and everythings is still set to be shared.  Anyone ever have this happen?

What happens if you go online to iCloud.com? Do you see your contacts or calendar there? If so, try going into Settings on the phone and turning off iCloud sync for calendar and contacts, then turn it back on. Are you syncing notes with iCloud, or with an email account?

  • 20" Cinema

20" Cinema LCD Monitor started blinking  short-short-long 3 times every five seconds and whole top area of screen is dimmer.

    Thanks for your reply.
I actually discovered the "problem".... the small connector from my Mac Book Pro to the display (Mini Display port to DVI) just went bad. I was surprised because there was no warning, and it's not like it gets a lot of abuse, just plugging and unplugging.
I figured it out by connecting to a new monitor I had at work, and when my MacPro didn't show up on that I figured it was the adaptor.
Good news is that I'm up and running again for $20!!
    Thanks aanyway for your input.

  • Mac Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.1 Not installing after restart

I've been trying to get this Firmware update installed for a month now, but every time I restart it just comes back to the screen with instructions. I've tried holding the power button down until after it blinks, until the beep, while it's blinking, after the beep- and nothing seems to work so I just hit cancel and give up on the update. I've seen others have had this problem but responses say just to hold it down for 5 seconds, but that doesn't work. Are there any other solutions?

One solution might be that the firmware update is for a MacPro and you show having a G5.

  • 2 Time Capsule Icons In Finder

I was having problems connecting to the internet and called AppleCare. They had me reset my time capsule and set it up again from scratch. All was well last night but this morning when I woke my iMac up there are now 2 Time Capsule icons in the Finder. One looks like the normal TC icon and says Mac server and the other looks like a PC and says PC server. Anyone know what's going on? This thing worked flawlessly until yesterday.

honestly I went through the settings on the TC and was not able to find anything that would specifically effect windows SMB filesharing. My thought is that it, by default, has that particular protocol enabled. From looking around the other forums, it appears that other users are having PC servers popping up when networked with other Apple devices (computers specifically). My thought is that it is a small "bug" in leopards expanded Windows networking abilities. Many people claim to not have had the issue with older Mac OSX versions and that it only arose when upgrading to leopard.
Since the Macbook is not here right now for me to experiment, and my TC does not show up as a windows server, perhaps give a try at disabling SMB file sharing in the Sharing preferences pane. If the PC Server portion of the TC disappears than we know it is Leopards SMB sharing that causes this. if you network with other windows computer though you will want to re-enable this.
The fact that all SMB enabled apple devices don't show up on other Macs as PC servers indicates to me that it is likely a bug (either all or none should show up), as my MacPro does not show up as a PC server on the Macbook.
Go figure. At least this isn't terribly intrusive (maybe just a little ugly to have that blue screen of death lingering in the finder sidebar!)

  • Can't get Comedy Central Daily Show video to play on MacPro, but plays ok on MacBookPro. Wassup?

I'm flummoxed. Both MacBook Pro and Mac QuadPro are now Lion.
I can get Daily Show videos to play on the Macbook pro, but not on the MacPro, and I hardly know where to start diagnosing the problem. I've tried to compare configurations w/ FireFox, but I don't see the discrepancy, if there is one.
I used to be able to see the video on (shows up as a solid black rectangle) the desktop in 10.5.8, then I think disappeared in snow leopard, 10.6.nn, and has remained so in 10.7.1

Try Lion forum and even Safari. Lion pulled PowerPC/Rosetta code support.
