MacPro 5.1 internal HD limit?

I have a MacPro 5.1 and currently have 3ea 1TB drives installed.
Does this model have any kind of internal HD limit?
I have read it maxes out at 8TBs, but I'm thinking that because 2TB drives were the largest available when it was introduced, but am concerned that their may be a limit per channel.  I have also read there "was" an issue with HFS+ with larger than 2TB drives, but I"m assuming that's been addressed, but has it?
I would like to a) add a 4TB drive in bay 4 and b) replace the 1TB in bay 3 with a second 4TB drive, thus giving me a total of 10TBs of internal storage.
Will I have issues with this plan?

WD REDs are for NAS and hardware. There have been problems using those individually inside the Mac Pro. I was going to buy one to see why even... and move it to a PC or attach to my router.
There is not an individual channel per drive. They all share a rather weak single controller. Same as Intel SATA ports etc on any motherboard. And it does not even come close to 1.2GB (300MB x 4, with actual being 250 after overhead, more like 175MB/sec and less than 800MB total.
The 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 also has an issue with the 4x PCIe slots, they do something that results in less than ideal.
A lot of things we took for granted and didn't know until SSDs could push the bandwidth further.
There are limits but not in the drive capacity department. For tips and someone who is into some serious photography and maxed out Mac Pro (VAR also) see:

WE have almost always seen issues with green drives, or some users, and lately a huge spat of Seagate related issues. Those are not indicative of 7.2k drives from other vendors. And some don't work in external cases and come up against the bridge+firmware used with FW800 or USB3 on Mac.
MacGurus has been a long time Seagate reseller and probably is up on what is going on with their drives. I have WD Green in all my systems, for data and for TimeMachine. No sweat with any ever in 4 yrs.
If you use Windows then use WD Lifeguard on your drives even before use, esp. if they will hold a lot of precious data or doubly so if used in software array. And if mirror or stripped then check out

  • MacPro blue ray internal  and external burner

I have Prostudio 2 and the latest updates on my quad core 3.0.
I want to be able to burn blue ray DVDs and was wondering what is the best buy for a internal blue ray drive?
Can I burn a Blue Ray DVD using Toast 8 or is it not required?

    You're very welcome.
I have never burned a movie with mine but I have burned large 3+ GB ISO images using CD Burner XP, and it takes just a few minutes.
Now, if you mean can you insert a disk in one drive, and copy that disk via the other drive using the same program set to copy or grab disk, that should be possible.
It should show one drive as the one to copy from and one to copy to, just like if you had two DVD drives in a desktop PC.
If you are asking can you simultaneously burn two different files on two different burners using the same program at the same time, that I have no clue. I guess you would have to try it and find out.  You would open the program and burn one file to a disk and open the program again and burn another file to the other DVD burner. If the program won't let you open two instances of it at the same time, then you probably could open a different DVD burning program such as the one I posted above and use that to burn the other files with.

  • Internal or  External Hard drives for MacPro and Final Cut Pro Suite

We are purchasing a new MacPro with Final Cut Pro Studio to edit High Def video (1080x1920) in a professional sports setting. Initial storage will equal 12 TB. I've always felt original internal hard drives are more desirable: higher quality, fully compatible with Mac, and faster I think. Others feel that external storage is "safer." Should we get a MacPro with 8TB internal or go with all external? What are the advantages/disadvantages with each? Thank you very much in advance.
    LifeisRich

A hard drive is not going to change.
An external case has its own PSU and cooling.
SATA II is not going to change.
"Sharing" one channel for multiple drives is the only way it would be slow, using Port Multiplier.
There are very nice rugged storage racks for 8-12 drives and $600 range controllers. Take a look at what Fibre Channel offers. What the Apple XRAID once was.
I'd put the system on 10K 600GB WD probably, and not worry too much about internal storage. Also, you say "initial storage" so that assumes your needs are in the 20TB and you never using more than 60%. A good RAID can maintain performance to higher %.
Disk drives have made port multiplier less useful until SATA III chipsets arrive.

  • How to install Windows 7 on extra Internal Disk

Apple's latest "Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide" does not provide clear instructions to accomplish what I believe to be possible. A review of this forum for past articles provides more clues, but still leaves me wondering what are the actual steps to achieve my goal:
Install Windows 7 on my MacPro on an internal disk that is not in the first hard drive bay. I want to make the Windows disk it's own single partition, and keep my MacOS on it's own drive as it currently exists.
Here's what Apple's latest guide states:
"If you have a MacPro with more than one internal disk and you want to install Boot Camp on a disk that isn't in the first hard drive bay, remove the drives in the lower numbered bays. You can reinstall the drives after you install Boot Camp."
I have a call in to Apple Support and it was immediately bumped up to Engineering because none whom I spoke with were able to answer the question. In fact, they told me that no one had ever asked the question before!
So I would like to understand the actual steps. Could I boot from the Windows CD and choose the internal disk I want to install it? Do I need Boot Camp to load and install the Apple supplied Windows drivers?
    MacPro 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Xeon, 8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3, 3 internal drives. OS X 10.9.4

The disk I want to put Windows on is named "Windows HD". Here is the diskutil list from my machine:

Does this mean the Windows HD disk is already in the first hard drive bay; /dev/disk0?
My lack of clarity stems from the Apple instruction to remove my OSX boot drive. I have Windows 7 DVD install disk. Thank you for the help.

  • HT4863 Message placed in outbox- reached my sending limit?-How

I have somehow reached an internal iCloud limit that has not been noted by Apple in the mail spec below:
    Limits on Sending Messages
iCloud has several safeguards to ensure that only iCloud members can send messages using the iCloud outgoing mail server. Among these safeguards are reasonable limitations on:
The total number of messages you can send each day (200 messages)
The number of recipients to whom you can send each day (1000 recipients)
The maximum number of recipients per message (100 recipients)
The size of incoming and outgoing messages (20 MB)
iCloud email has been designed primarily for personal use. Sending unsolicited bulk email messages through iCloud email servers is prohibited. To review the iCloud membership agreement and acceptable use policy, please see theiCloud Terms and Conditions.
    NOTES:
I have tried to send from multiple iPads, iPhones, MacBook Pros... even the browser based iCloud in hopes sometrhing might go outbound. No dice.
-I am a light weight user in Mail meaning it's mostly text responses with an occasional pic or mov.
-I have a 25GB iCloud acct and still show 7.4 GB available.
    -I have not:
         -Bulk mailed
-exceeded 200 messages sent in day
-used up 1000 recips in day
-copied more than 100 in a message
-or exceeded 20MB in or out
All other iCloud functions are working.
    Help!

For what it's worth, I've seen a number of posts like this in the last week.  There may be a problem at Apple's end.  You would have to contact support to find out (http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/).

  • Small Office Server Specs

    Hi,
Sorry for the long posting. We've had a file server melt down that has thrown into sharp relief are need to go onto a proper server solution. Any views will be much appreciated.
    _The Setup_
We currently have 2 macs and 4 pcs runnning on a 10/100 LAN (via a netgear ADSL router); this also has a LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini running as the file server. The computers and file server are backed up daily using Retrospect Backup 6.1 on my Mac to alternating USB HDs.
    _The Problem_
The backup is a pain to be honest. It has been working fine for three weeks or more but has recently stopped working. The solution is to reformat the backup drives and redo the scripts. Time consuming and leaves us open to disaster recovery **** if one of the main drives falls over in this period (as it takes me a week or so to get around to sorting it out).
Guess what? The backup has failed. I'm in the middle of sorting it (and therefore have no backup) and the LaCie file server has died. Hopefully the data recovery lab will do its magic. However this situation is no good.
    _The Plan_
To put in a Mac server (Leopard) and have the users home directories mirrored on the server (don't know the term) and backup the server.
    _*The Question*_
Can I do this cheaply and use an existing G4 Mac Mini as the server. Plug two LaCie desktop HD into it (via USB or ethernet on the LAN) as the file server. Using RAID1 to provide the backup. Alternatively go for the considerably more expensive MacPro with two internal HDs in RAID1.
My concerns are that the cheap option is a false economy (i.e even though low use the setup will be on 24/7) and that the backup is robust enough and will backup both the files on the file server and also peoples home directories.
    Yours,
    Francis.

Do I need a server in order to use Daylite?
You need a computer that will act as a server, running Daylite Server. A server grade computer like an Xserve is not required, but you're welcome to use one. Most of our customers use Mac minis as their dedicated Daylite server.
That was taken from the Daylite faq. But honestly, like the previous user said you could probably get away with just running it on a dedicated computer running Mac OS X Client that has file sharing enabled. I would contact their tech support to make sure.

  • Use collections in Adobe Bridge

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/creativesuite/cs/using/WSA54A1C45-604E-4515-B212-0A3DF67417C4. html

Can smart collections (in Bridge) search across multiple drives?
In theory yes, in practice I can't get it to work.
Don't have a network set up so can't check that but using a MacPro with several internal and external disk connected I gave it a try.
in the folder panel select your computer ( in my case Mac pro, containing all disks) and the icons of disks will show.
Now create a new smart collection from the collection panel. In the pop up window under Source / Look in: choose 'current folder' (or browse: and choose network).
You must have selected include all subfolder and I'm afraid also include non indexed files. (I did try this only shortly and used cancel, because this will start indexing all files of all disks and this can be very time consuming.)
Without the index option I did not get any result for a simple search for a filename I new was on at least 2 disks.

  • New Mac 8-Core

Have ordered a new Mac but I need some advice on the possibility of running an old Digi Studio 4 Midi Interface. Currently I'm using a GeeThree Stealth serial out from my aging DP G4. Does a MacPro have an internal modem, and if so is it kosha to install the stealth card?
If this is not possible are there any other options? I'd hate to lose all of my outboard synths and effects all in the name of progress.
    Keith Moore

No matter what the computer is, midi interface will work, or if your current interfaceits is,nt compatable with mac-pro you could pick up a midi interface for under $40. I'll tell you this going with a 8-core mac/pro, there no better way to go about it, soon there will be sofware developers working with 8 core, very complex route though, but apple keep stepping the game up, and as the hardware is here already, the sofware will follow, some ppl today might say their no need for 8 core, because no one have seen sofware that support it, however if that was the case why would apple make such an amazing machine, who wants to miss-out on today,s technology yesterday is all history, good luck on your choice of purchase.

  • ATI 4870 with a GT120?

I know in PC land mixing brands is a bad thing, however I believe its due more to how drivers operate in Windows then the hardware.
If I order a Mac Pro with an HD 4870 and add in a GT 120 for a third monitor, will the universe explode?
    - D

    Hey,
You should be able to install both the GT 120 and ONE 4870.
The MacPro has two internal outlets for additional power, the 4870 uses both of them. That is why you can only install one 4870 and would not be able to install other cards if they need to use one of these power ports.
Since the GT 120 doesn't use these ports, you should be good from a hardware standpoint.
Now, in the past there have been problems with mixing NVIDIA and ATI cards in the same machine. To answer that question we may have to wait till someone tries it and can tell us their experiences.

  • 500GB Seagate drive in an external FW enclosure won't mount

    Hi-
I have the latest MacPro with one internal HD 250 GB. I found a great deal on a an ATA drive by Seagate 500GB and bought an external FW enclosure, as I've done many times in the past with smaller drives 160GB, 40GB and so on.
I connected everything and it won't mount. This case says it will handle larger drive sizes. I swapped an older drive from another case and it worked fine. Is there a step I'm missing, or do I have a bad drive?
I'm want to use the 500Gb for FCE editing.
    Thanks,
    Anne Z

Unfortunately, all cases are not made equal. Depending on the chipset used in the external case, it may not be compatible with your 500GB drive. Some chipsets can not handle that big of a drive. I have one firewire drive that can't handle a 250GB drive, but it can a 200GB drive. This seems to be your case since you are able to put a smaller drive in the case and it works. You might want to see if you can return the case and find one that specifically states it can handle a 500GB drive.

  • Recording to external disk?

Do most of you do this instead of recording to your system disk? If so, why?

Because usually your system disk is busy running the shop. You can get away with it for a while if your projects are small, but after a while, things will start to slow down, and audio may not always have top priority over system functions. Result - gliches. If you are a privateer, maybe no problem, but if you are doing it for a living, it would be almost suicidal.
Most professionals have been using a MacPro with several internal disks, system, audio, and maybe a couple of sample library disks. Lately with the advent of Thunderbolt, external disks are stating to be a more reasonable option, which has been bringing the iMacs and laptops more into play.Firewire is OK, but if you are running dozens of tracks with lots going on, as well as a firewire interface, things can start to bottle neck.
if you have the option of only one internal drive, make sure your extermal audio drive is AT LEAST firewire 400. 800 is much better, and eSATA or Thunderbolt is as good as an internal drive. USB2 is not a feasible option for external audio, unless you are only talking about half a dozen tracks, and you don't mind a bit of skittishness.
    Hope this helps.

They fixed something in 1.3.1_04 that was causing errors similar to yours so you
should probably try moving up to the _04 release.
Also there are some know problems with older JVMs when JSPs get REALLY big through
many custom tags, includes, etc. Breaks some internal 64K limit.. Might be related
              to that.
