MacPro + 8800GT + Snow Leopard = fan noise!!

I have a MacPro Dual-Core Xeon 2.66GHz (form year 2006) and I have a Nvidia 8800GT.
When I startup from 10.5.x (Leopard) I don't have noise from the fan of the video card,
but if I startup form 10.6.x (Snow Leopard) I have a loud noise from the fan of the video card!!
what I can do!?
sorry for the bad english..
lenny

Odd, I don't hear any difference and I wonder if you installed 10.6 over 10.5.8, or clean install?
It always tends to make a slight audible noise from the fan on cold boot, that seems normal and just its way of operating. But not what I would call 'loud' and it is very short.

  • MacPro with Snow Leopard will not boot

This morning, something odd is happening. Last night, when I sent to bed, my computer was fine, but this morning, when I tried to power it on, it tried to power up and then shut off. Does it every time. When booting from the normal start up disk, the startup chime is heard, then the apple logo appears for a few seconds, the machine clicks a few times and then shuts off.
When I hold down the option key on startup, I can see the boot drive options. So, I tried booting for a CD/DVD, but when I do, it just hangs and never boots. Disc drive spins for a second like it's trying to, but then winds down and hangs on the gray screen. However, I can boot from my Bootcamp drive (not a partition, but an actual, physical drive), and run Windows fine. Even when I try booting with Extensions off (holding Shift on boot up), it still hangs.
I've tried clearing PRAM, unplugging all USB accessories and even removing all non-essential PCI cards, and still nothing.
This is very bizarre. What would keep the Mac OS booting, but not the bootcamp stuff?
    Any thoughts?
    Russ

I have my system drive backed up. I tried pulling the system drive, inserting a new blank drive and booting from the Snow Leopard install disk to install the OS from scratch. It still won't boot from the DVD OSX install disk, even with the other system disk removed.
The problem seems to be that when booting from anything OSX, the system won't boot, but when booting from Bootcamp, it'll boot fine.
From the Windows side, I can see the Mac startup drive and all the files, so that disk is readable, at least. Just not bootable.
I talked to Apple tech support as well. They can't figure out either. Headed to the Genius bar this afternoon. Maybe they can figure out.

  • Can one buy a new top of the line MacPro with Snow Leopard on it directly from Apple store?

I'm considering a new Mac Pro desktop with two identical video graphics card, a bazillion GB of RAM, etc., but want no part of Lion and/or Mountain Lion.  I'm wondering if Apple still sell them.
Has anyone bought one such beast from the Apple store recently?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the lightning fast response, mende1.
From the lack of Snow Leopard options at the Apple store, I was already getting the impression that it was not feasible anymore.  It's good to know for certain.
That leaves me with the choice of a used/refurbished Mac or a Windoze box with Windows 7 on it, which can still be obtained from HP, and maybe Dell and others.
Just as I want no part of the stinky lions, I want no part of Windows 8 either.
From my point of view, the engineers at Apple and Microsoft lost their minds with their latest operating systems.  It's mind boggling!

  • Snow leopard agent provides a half of total CPU power?

    Dear All
I am using a snow leopard server as a Xgrid controller.
    Here are several agents.
Some of them are Leopard machines and the others are of Snow Leopard.
Xgrid admin on the controller shows total power of each agent.
    I noticed that,
agents with Snow Leopard seems to provide a half of its total CPU power.
    For example,
In a case of the MacPro with Leopard which has 8 cores with 3GHz,
Xgrid admin shows that "Total CPU Power = 24.00 GHz".
However, the MacPro with Snow Leopard which also has 8 cores with 2.26GHz,
Xgrid admin shows that "Total CPU Power = 9.04 GHz" which is a half of the total CPU power.
    Why??
Is there any security like limitation on Snow Leopard that the Xgrid controller can occupy the agent's CPU up to a half of the total CPU Power?
Thank you for any comments in advance.

Well I don't know why it was changed, but this article should explain how to change it back to a one to one core to task ratio.

  • Fan noise Snow Leopard, MacBook

    Hi,
since I upgraded to Snow Leopard my CPU has a constant temperature of around 60 °C. I'm mostly using Logic9 on my Macbook. Everytime the fan kicks in and runs at up to 6000rpm. This never happended before. The CPU usage is around 30%. The noise is so disturbing that I cannot work on my projects. The CPU temperature then is around 68°C.
    Does anybody know what's wrong?

Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
If you still get no joy, consider walking it in to the nearest Apple Store and having the staff offer up opinions.

  • Mac Pro Nvidia 8800GT and snow leopard 10.6.4  problems

I have a Mac pro 1.1 with a Nvidia 8800GT and I have having a lot of problems since update to snow leopard latest release. My computer start to show lines and giggle with lines static and then freeze, it make so bad that you can't do anything even restart the computer does not solve the problem. I have reset the pram and all possible solution available. Maybe the video card is going to die soon?

My MacPro 3.1 with Nvidia 8800 Gt is also not HP.
Initially I was getting some video glitches just after start up but then the machine would settle down and run for the session.
about a week ago the situation got increasingly worse so that from last Sat morning its will not even boot up 4 times out of 5 tries.
Gets to the apple symbol then freezes
I've tried booting from the snow leopard install disc but even then its freezes and I see many video artifacts.
I've ordered a ATi Radeon 4870 to replace the graphics card as I thought that might be the issue. The 8800 GT was full of fluff I feared it had cooked itself this summer.
But now I'm concerned from reading several forum topics that a recent OSX update has effectively killed machines with the 8800 Gt card.
I can't really operate fully without my macpro as that where most of the software is held. CS5 master suite etc
My business partner did say just get another machine but i'm not happy to go down that route just yet. Yes of course a 12 core is tempting but at ££££.££ cost.

  • Noises on external USB audio interface (Yamaha MW12) with Snow Leopard

    Hi there,
I got an issue with strong noises (kind of distortion) while playing all kind of music/sounds ( itunes/Reason/Cubase) via an external USB audio device (Yamaha MW12 mixer).
    Some important facts:
+ This had not been from the very first beginning of changing to snow leopard
+ but never appeared on "leopard"
+ Yamaha mixer is still working fine with my MS-windows computer
+ latest Asio driver by Yamaha is not helping.
+ internal audio of my Mac Book Pro is working fine.
As this issue just appears 2 days before, without any change or installation on my system, I really wonder, what could be happen. As Yamaha mixer is still working fine with other computer, I expect some driver in MacOS to be the problem (as internal audio HW is working fine).
Does anybody else, know, what to do? (before I change back to MacOS 10.5)
Has anybody else have seen a similar issue?
    Thanks for helping in advance.
    Merry christmas,
    Mat

    Hi,
    just one addon.
+ Changed USB ports on MacBook and it was fine on the second used.
+ Nevertheless, noise remains on the originaly used port
+ all other connected devices as mouse and midi interface are fully functional on both ports
It still looks like a driver issue. Nevertheless, could it be a hardware issue with the USB port in my MacBook then? Even if all other tried devices are functional?
    cheers, Mat

  • 12 Core MacPro freezing, can't re-install Snow Leopard to SSD

    Hello,
My MacPro started freezing right after Christmas this year, seemingly as I set-up my new iPad2 (although I think this is a coincidence).
Seems to happen after the computer wakes from sleep. Mouse works right up to the time I shut down via the power button but becomes increasingly useless. First it works, then it allows me to access menus & raise the dock but not activate anything, then the dock freezes & nothing responds (but the mouse is still mobile). Key commands don't work at this point either. I've also noticed that when this happens (upon awakening), some of the icons on the right side of my menu bar are missing: Time Machine, Spaces, Airport & Energy Saver.
I've spent days trying to fix this on my own. Here's what I've tried so far:
Run Disk Utility, Drive Genius, Disk Warrior, reset PRAM & NVRAM, corrected permissions (including those of my home folder via terminal) & tried to reinstall Snow Leopard.
As to reinstalling the OS, I started with my original gray factory SL disk. Inserted, selected printers, languages, font prefs & started. After about 15 minutes got blue screen, DVD drive stopped chewing. I let it go & in another ten minutes the original screen appeared asking me if I'd like to install the OS. This time, my boot disk wasn't shown.
Restarted from disk this time, ran Disk Utilities but drive wasn't showing there either. Quit, restarted normally & all was there.
Tried reinstalling again, got to gray screen with apple logo but it stopped there. Let it go overnight but it was still there in the morning. No messages.
Thinking the disk might be bad, I started from the retail Snow Leopard install disk I bought for my MacBook Pro... same result.
Reran all tests. Including extended Apple Hardware Tests: no problems.
    What I've got:
    12 core MacPro 2 x 2.66ghz (Sept. 2010)
    16 gb 1333mhz DDR3 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card
Set up (per recommendations on LLoyd Chambers Diglloyd MPG site):
Boot disk/applications (in second optical bay): 120 GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD
         GUID partition, Journaled HFS+
2 TB Western Digital Black Caviar for TimeMachine: internal
    2) 2TB WD black Caviars & OEM 1 TB RAID 0 Striped to create:
3.48 TB data drive (my home folder)
    768 GB scratch disk.
This has been my set-up since day one & has worked fine.  In early December 2011 one of the WD HDD's died.  Warranty replacement, rebuilt the RAID, recopied my data, re-associated my home folder & all worked fine for about a month (did a lot of research during rebuilding) before current glitch. No problems with freezing prior to late December.  However, up until that time I believe my energy saver prefs were set to Never allow the HD to sleep (I do some overnight rendering). I did recently change that to sleep after 3 hours.
I'm hoping a clean install of the OS, then the 10.6.8 combo updater & finally a fresh install of all of my apps might cure things.  Even now, my machine runs very quickly (now even quicker than before the hard drive replacement).  I want to solve this before these hard resets start writing bad blocks to my drives.  Also hoping that a clean install of the OS will be able to link back to my current TimeMachine back-up.
Sorry for the length of this post but I wanted to state what I have unt what I've done in the hope of finding a solution.
I've searched here & online for answers without much luck so this is my last ditch effort before disconnecting & lugging my 70lb. machine to the Apple Store.
    Thanks for any help.

I think I might have this mess sorted out, here's how I got to where I am.
Early this week, in an effort to eliminate another variable, I took my machine apart & blew it out with my compressor.  I removed all the drives, including the SuperDrive, the RAM & graphics card & blew them out separately then cleaned their contacts with a bit of contact cleaner on a cotton swab & reseated everything making sure that there were secure connections.  After reassembly I reconnected the machine, restarted & all seemed well for a few days to the point that I was confident enough to change my Energy Saver settings back to putting the disk to sleep after an hour.  That night I let it fall asleep on its own & when I awakened it the next morning, it froze again.
I called Other World Computing & asked for their help.  After explaining the situation the tech suggested a few things which I'd already done & suggested that I continue trying to reinstall the OS.  He did say that they were aware of a "wake from sleep" issue with my model SSD but that the problem was usually associated with laptops.  Like in my case, it only seems to happen when the drive falls asleep on its own, not if you put it to sleep manually.  He said that if the problem continued after a clean reinstall I'd need to return the drive to have it reflashed (whatever that means).
I started up from my original OS DVD, opened Disk Utility but the SSD wasn't shown in the window (as happened before).  I called back to OWC & they issued me an RMA offering to replace the drive.  I've got some work that needs to be finished this weekend then I'll box it up, send it off & report back next week when I try it all again with the new drive.
Thanks again for continued help.  It's good to have someone to bounce thoughts off of!
P.S.  A small piece of advice to anyone reading this that might be dealing with similar problems, the tech mentioned that you shouldn't use any disk utility to repair bad blocks on an SSD since they don't use blocks. He said it can sometimes compound the problem as those programs will try to move things to compensate.
