MacPro and MacBook Pro network setup

I hope someone can help me. Basically, I am trying to build a setup connecting my MacPro and MacBook Pro over a network sharing my DSL internet connection and one printer.
I currently have a Netgear DSL Router connected to my MacPro and need to add wireless connectivity for the MacBook Pro. I would like to leave the MacPro 'hardwired' to the router and share the printer over the Airport Express. Would this work or is another setup advisable?

Would the printer, connected to the AirPort Express, still be talking to the Mac Pro, which isn't directly connected?
Yes

Hey all... someone mentioned to me that I can connect my latptop and desktop together so that I can "combine" processsing power. I use various music creation software, logicpro and protools and would like to use the laptop to offload/run the plugins and the desktop to run the audio programs. Can this be done? If so, how? I will also post this to the Logic forum. Thanks.

i must be humorously challenged... LOL... I am using my Macs for processing audio via Protools and Logic. What I wanted to do was to offload some memory intensive programs to the laptop, stuff like Altiverb, Soundtoys and NI software instruments. I generally have no issues running the Logic plugs but add BFD, NI Absynth, Soundtoys Echoboy/Filter Freak and Altiverb, plus Sample Tank etc... and I can melt down the MacPro even with 4G Ram... not so much running Logic but for sure with ProToolsLE.

  • Windows XP and MacBook Pro Networking

Hello guys, I have been googling this stuff for 2 days now, and I'm to the point where I am nearly ready to pull my hair out!
I use Telus Highspeed internet here in Canada. Basically, I have a desktop PC running Windows XP downstairs in our house which is connected to the internet via a D-Link Router (2700HG-E Gateway). The other day, I bought a MacBook Pro, which is now running Mac OSX 10.5.4
As soon as I went through setup on the MacBook, it connected to the internet via the network BIG RIG (which is what I have set my router to broadcast as). The internet works perfect. If I go into my Router Admin settings, it shows 2 computers on my home network - my Windows PC and my MacBook Pro - life is good.
Now, I am trying to set up file and printer sharing between these two computers. This is where I have read so many different things, it is making my head spin. I tried setting up 'shared' folders on my windows PC and also set my printer to SHARED, but I can't figure out how to access them from my Mac (and the printer does not show up under the 'Windows' section of 'Printers' on my Mac). I was FINALLY able to access a shared folder on the PC through my Mac by going into Finder-Go-Connect to Server, and then entering the IP address and folder manually. But isn't there an easier way? And how do I set up printer sharing properly?
Just for the record, I am very experienced with computers...but very inexperienced with networking....so any simplification would help Thanks in advance for any help. I have read about entering workgroups and the like....but it just seems like it should be easier with both pc's showing up on my router, and the settings on the top RH side of the Mac (to the left of the clock) shows the BIG RIG router right there, and the internet is working fine.
    Thanks again!
    Chris

Hello Big Rig. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Check out this excellent iFelix article to see if it will help: Sharing files between a Windows XP PC and a Mac running OS 10.4.x. He also has articles related to shared Windows printers as well.

  • Effects plug in - different availability on MacPro and MacBook Pro

    Hi gang,
Previously I had a MacBook Pro and a G5 PowerMac. When running FCP 6, some of my plugins (all of the Virtix effects and Matte Magic) would work on the G5 but not on the Intel-based PowerMac. Recently I downloaded the plugin update from Software Update, and suddenly all of these effects work on my MacBook Pro! I recently upgraded my PowerMac to an Intel MacPro. After applying all of the updates, my Matte Magic filter is available, but not any of the Virtix effects (they are installed in the right location).
Weird! It seems that the plug-in update restored the functionality of some of these older filters on my MacBook Pro, but not on my MacPro. Any ideas why that might be?
    Cheers,
    Phil

Did you buy chance go from Tiger to Leopard? If so, you may need to get updates from the plug in author. Or if you did a "migration" with the Apple utility, not all of the necessary receipts and pref files come over. Download them fresh and install them from scratch, rather than copying them over.

  • IMac and Macbook Pro Networking Issue

Just recently both of my Macs have developed a wierd networking issue.  I am sharing folders on my Windows server (WHS), now this odd slow issue appeared when using a file from the server.  It acts like my network is really slow when opening a file, but my windows machines work fine on it.
I have not made any changes to the server, I am running a Gigabit Cisco network (not linksys) in my home and this thing has got me stumped.  I installed an anti-virus on the iMac and it found nothing.  Either wired or Wireless I see the same results but only related to the Mac's..... does anyone have an idea what might be doing this?  I am kinda a Mac noob in most aspects so I am looking for any help here.

It very well could be the antivirus app, most are intrusive and debilitate rather than enhance performance and should be removed using the developers instructions. You haven't really told us anything useful such as any settting you may have changed. However if you began working backwards resetting any changes and uninstalling the apps added since the performance issue started then you probably will find your issue.

  • I have 2 IMacs and MacBook Pro- can not work on FCP simultaneously when my network ports are on (open). How do I go about changing this?

    Hi!
I have 2 IMacs and MacBook Pro and can not work simultaneously on FCP on all workstations when the network port is open. Can anyone help me on this?

Did you purchase Final Cut Pro from the Mac app store? Or install it from disk? If from disk, you may have installed it on all machines using the same serial number, and using all of them simultaneously violates the license agreement. If you purchase from the App store the licensing is different and that may not apply.

  • MacBook and MacBook Pro competing for airwaves

    Howdy,
I have an Airport Extreme set up as wireless router, i.e., the cable modem is plugged into the Extreme. Elsewhere in the house, an Airport Express is set up to extend the network. We have both a MacBook and a MacBook Pro, both running Leopard. When both laptops are accessing the web, it seems as though they were competing for the connection because the MacBook systematically gets slower connections, lags, and sometimes gets disconnected entirely.
Following some advice I found elsewhere in these forums, I downgraded the firmware of the Airport Extreme to 7.3.1. Here are its main settings:
    - participate in a WDS network
    - radio mode: 802.11n (b/g compatible)
    - channel 11
    - security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    - DHCP server distributes addresses between 10.0.1.2 and 10.0.1.200
Both the Extreme and the Express use the same channel. I tried changing it with no success.
Upgrading the firmware does not resolve the issue. The MacBook Pro is never disconnected; it always comes ahead of the MacBook. The two laptops are not dealt the same IP address, but somehow, there is a competition. When the MacBook Pro is turned off, say, and not accessing the web or anything else, the MacBook does not get disconnected.
Has anyone seen such a situation before? I might have misconfigured something.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
    Dom

In a WDS setup, everyone uses the same channel (in your case 11).
If you can run an ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme to the Airport Express you can eliminate the WDS mode and instead configure your 2 base stations for WiFi Roaming, and you can put the Airport Express on a different channel (eg. Ch1).
The Airport Express gets its connection to the router via ethernet. The Express is configured into "Bridge Mode". The Express is given the exact same SSID as the Extreme. The Express is given the exact same password as the Extreme. The Express is set to a different channel (Channel 1 would be a good choice, unless your neighbors are using that, in which case you want to be at least 5 channels away from your Extreme and any neighboring base stations with strong signals).
This will give you a Roaming setup where as your move around the house, your MacBook and MacBook Pro will automatically switch between the strongest base station, but because everyone is using the same SSID and Password, you do not loose your connections.
And each base station is using its own channel.
If you do have neighbors with strong signals, you can use something like "AP Grapher", iStumbler, KisMac, MacStumbler, etc... to see your neighbors, the chanels they are using, and the relative WiFi signal strength so you can choose the channels with the least interference.
If you can not run an ethernet cable between the Extreme and the Express, but you really like the idea of a Roaming network, then you could look into PowerLine ethernet adaptors for getting an ethernet equivalent between the 2 base stations.

  • Can't Connect MacBook and MacBook Pro at same time to AEBS

I can't connect a MacBook and MacBook Pro to an Airport Extreme Base Station at the same time. Whichever one connects first works and the other one doesn't. It was working fine for months and then stopped working. Can only use one computer at at time. There's nothing else on the network. It may have been a software update that caused the problem, but I'm not sure which one. Have done all software updates and am not using any security on the network, so that's not the problem. Many sleepless nights trying to get this fixed, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Do me a favor. So many users are experiencing this (no myself though) and I have suggested so many things with nothing constantly working. There are successes here and there, but nothing consistently solves the problem. However, try the following in Airport Utility and both Macs, and then let us know what happens.
*Can’t Access Certain Web Sites / DNS Server Settings Issues*
I'm wondering if either or both Airport Utility & Network Prefs have proper DNS server settings. Try this
    Launch Airport Utility.
    Select TC on left.
    Click "Manual Setup".
Select "Internet" from the toolbar above.
    What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"?
Try putting in these servers from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click "Update".
Your TC will restart with the new settings.
Next, launch System Prefs --> Network Prefs.
Select the service you usually connect with on the left (Airport or Ethernet).
    Then click, "Advance..."
    Click the "DNS" tab.
    What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"?
Usually "10.0.1.1" will be listed first in gray. This refers back to the settings in the Airport Utility.
Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to add the DNS servers noted above here as well.
    Click "OK" then click "Apply".
    Finally, reboot your Mac.
Now see if you have internet access all around.
Let us know if this resolves your issue.
    Cheers!

  • What's the best way to share my Aperture and FCPX projects between an iMac and MacBook Pro?

    Greetings,
I own both an iMac and MacBook Pro and I'm interested in figuring out the best way to have access to my iTunes, Aperture and Final Cut Pro X files not only when I'm at home using the iMac, but when I'm out and about with the MBP.
I'm sure there are others among us who require a similar setup so I was hoping you guys could share with me how you solved this little problem, and also inform me of any potential negatives for your method so that I'm well prepared. Thanks.

Best is a subjective term, as it will ultimately come down to preference. The fastest however, would be to wait until they market has a few thunderbolt drives available for purchase...
But like the first poster stated, a firewire 800 drive, would be the more convenient choice for now. Or you could set the shared folder on your iMac to be avaible on your network and use it to allow your MBP to access it wirelessly.
Obviously whatever you change, just save it back to the same folder on the iMac. Keep in mind it will not be as fast as the first suggestion (unless it is a wired network), but may be usefull for smaller files.
However, you should have everthing backed up via an external drive, that is always useful...

  • AEBS, TimeMachine and Macbook Pro

Ok guys, this is hard to describe but I will give it my best. Please bear with me.
Since about April, my airport and macbook pro (08 model) simply wouldnt work properly.
Took the airport to the apple service centre, and he simply replaced the airport for me
All problems solved, until tonight. The exact problem came back.
All firmware/software is up to date.
Its like this. Everything will work great for ages and then my timemachine airdisk will simply dissappear with resulting errors - cannot find disk etc. <-Annoying.
The mac connects to the airport extreme over wireless N only (5ghz) on startup, SOMETIMES. Other times the AEBS will simply not appear in the wireless network list. If I connect to my wireless modem (billion 7401vgp), the airport is suddenly in the list inside Airport Utility. I can open the advanced config etc and change settings. The aebs is not frozen. The light is green on the base itself and in airport utility.
Sometime later, it will come back to the wireless network list, and all is good, except for the airdisk.
Other times, all will work fine the moment i get home, and then randomly and suddenly, the AEBS will lose the net, and a few moments later, will disconnect and the mac will fall back and connect to the wireless modem, which is good for the net, but i bought an AEBS for the wireless N speeds (around 270-290mbit most of the time)
Obviously the first base station was not the problem. I have tried anything and everything but cannot force faults to replicate. iStumbler shows this is the only 5gig network in the area, and only sometimes can see 2-3 other 2.4gig networks.
Any and all help greatly appreciated.
    /rant

See page 33 of the Motorola SURFboard SB4220 User Guide for multiple users setup with this modem. By default, the device connected to either the USB or Ethernet port will get it's IP address from the modem's DHCP server. In turn, when you connect the AEBSn to the modem's Ethernet port, it would get one of these addresses; however, the AEBSn providing NAT & DHCP services itself, will create another subnet of IP address to devices connected to it.
To allow all devices to be on the same subnet, just connect the PC, via Ethernet or wirelessly, to the AEBSn instead of it's USB connection to the modem.

Hello. I've Apple TV 3rd gen and MacBook Pro 2013 all with latest updates. AirPlay works fine till I don't start streaming videos from YouTube. After that AirPlay icon from MacBook menu bar simply disappears. Could some help. I'm using 2 Mbps internet connection.

Same issue here- I can airplay my amazon prime library just fine from my iphone 5 but on my macbook- (mavericks, 15 inch 2013 retina with quad core i7, nvidia 650 M and SSD) it just sputters and lags.
I have noticed web video is considerably worse than local content, giving me pauses of up to 2 or 3 seconds in which video stops but audio continues in the amazon player. Youku video, however, seems relatively stable. Our subscription speed is 25 mbps, so that should be plenty to stream SD video from Amazon and doesn't account for why it would be nice and stable from the iphone, but not the mbp.
Playing light, locally hosted steam sidescrollers  like Limbo is better but gives periodic drops in framerate on the Tv. when mirroring the framerate remains steady on the MBP screen.
Games airplayed from my iphone seem relatively stable, though with a noticably lower framerate on the TV than on the phone.
It seems these issues have abated considerably since yesterday's Apple TV update, but are still curious nonetheless and I'm not sure that the update yesterday was specifically meant to address those issues or if I'm just getting a time with less network interference now.
Comcast recently installed a new router/modem/phone combo, replacing our old separate modem and router setup. I'm going to test if putting the network on a different channel helps.

    Thanx in advance.

I agree anti-relay can be using UBE feature. However, there is serious problem in reject the spam mail. My nms is using UBE feature to stop spam mail. According to the work flow of the UBE, the mail is received by nms completely and UBE is going to invesgate the mail address. Although UBE can stop the spam mail, the spam mail have a trouble in returning the mail to the sender. The reason is the sender address is usually not existed in the world. That will cause a lot of mail waiting in the mail queue.
In my experience, do not use UBE for anti-relay.
