MacPro Early 2008 Display/Video Card Problem

*Hello, I have a Dual Quad-Core 2.8Ghz MacPro (Early 2008) with the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB Video Card. I believe I am having the exact same symptoms listed on the topic "Mac Pro 2008 Video Card Problem".*
*MacPro has been working fine. Until one day, I power it on and the display stays black. There is nothing you can do besides holding down the power button and rebooting the computer. I have tried to do this many times and the display will not come up. I have also tried resetting the VRAM and PRAM settings - still did not work. I have had my MacPro for about one year and a half. It is in very good condition (no damage/no liquid/no overheating). From time to time, you power on the computer and the display works! It is very random. I am scared to turn off the computer or put it to sleep as this can also trigger the problem.*
*I did not get the extended AppleCare (the MacPro itself already cost me about $3400!) I tested the Cinema Display and it is fine, therefore the problem is not coming from the display.*
*I went to the Apple Store and they kept my MacPro for one night. Called me the next day telling me it was going to cost me approximately $800 in order to fix this problem. They claimed that either my Bluetooth module or my Main Logic Board was causing the display not to show. I am out of warranty, and I think it is very expensive. I am doing my research online in order to try and find a cheaper solution. After reading the discussions and checking out some other websites. I have a few questions:*
*If I buy a NEW* ATI Radeon HD 2600 and install it in my MacPro - will it fix my problem?*
*OR - I also heard about the ATI Radeon HD 4870 - Is that graphic card compatible with my MacPro - will that resolve the problem?*
*Do you think I should give it a shot? Are there any other things I can try?*
*I am thinking that I should try to replace the graphic card first and see if that is causing the problem instead of replacing the Main Logic Board right away (which will cost me over $500)*
*Please let me know of any thoughts that come in mind. I really need some support. I am a college student studying Audio Engineering and I use my MacPro everyday on Pro Tools and Logic. This machine is my life.*
*Thank You,*
*Kevin C.*

Glad you solved your problem Gaunja. Here's an update on my own.
When last heard from I had diagnosed the failure of my displays to boot up to graphics card problem in my early 2008 Mac Pro with my stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 by swapping out the same card from my son's Mac Pro and seeing the displays boot up fine. Before heading off to the Apple store for a new card I reinstalled my suspect video card just to see what would happen. The displays booted up fine. Now, two weeks later, again no video display--black screens--no signal from the graphics card. I rebooted the computer several times to no avail and was, again, about to head off to the Apple store for a new card. This time "just to see what would happen" I moved the graphics card to another slot and bingo, the displays are up. What can be determined from my experience to date?
1. The graphics card is flirting with death. Like a patient unwilling to die, through a mysterious force, it rallies to live another day.
2. The slot the card came installed in is unreliable--it's dirty, there's a spec of dust in there, a contact has degraded after two years, or some other slot related fault. Note that, until the card failed for the first time, it had never been removed from it's slot, the computer was treated gently, and it operated in a very clean environment.
If anyone has another theory about what may be happening here please feel free. I fully expect the displays to go dark again at some point as my suspicions are that it's the card itself that is the problem. The two replacement cards I'm considering are the ATI Radeon HD 4870 or the Nividia Geo Force GT120. I've read that both work with the early Mac Pros. Some complain that the ATI card is noisy and expensive. Based of Gaunja's post and others I think the Nividia card will suit my needs, be quieter, and cost less. But, for now, my stock ATI Radeon 2600 lives!
Just one man's experience with the "Mac Pro display, black screen" problem.

  • IMac early 2008 8800GS video card issue

I have had this machine for 2.5 years and all is fine until 1 day (mid of Nov) that it would not start (blank screen after apple logo).
    Nov 19, 2010
I brought it to the Richmond centre apple store in Richmond, BC, Canada (since I have applecare). I was told by the apple genius there he would need to replace the logicboard and the video card with estimates of $1500+ (i was thinking i m so lucky that I have bought applecare). The repair took 1 full week and at the end they only replaced the video card. I was happy to have my imac back (Nov 25, 2010)
    Dec 7, 2010
The iMac would not start up again (same symptoms to the first one) except that this time I was able to boot into safe mode (any other modes or from ext HD or DVD will not work). In safe mode, the screen has a huge vertical bars like barcode, so I have no other choice but to bring it back to apple store again (this time to Oakridge Centre in Vancouver, BC). The Apple genius there said there's a problem with the logic board and they will replace it. The repair took 1 day and both logicboard and video card were replaced (Dec 9, 2010).

The iMac would not start again (blank screen after apple logo). This time I m so frustrated. How can you have repair the machine 2 times, replace most of the machine components and yet the machine would not start. I m losing so much confidence with both the iMac and the technicians at the Apple store. I give the machine a few more chances to boot/cooldown, disconnect to power source. It would boot up after disconnected to the power source for extended time but the screen garbled up as soon as you bring up the dashboard or attempt to use any applications.

New day of the year and I have to bring the iMac to repair. I ask for either a replacement or a refund as I have no confidence in the machine that I have. The Genius said that we cannot do that but we will take it in and have a look (I have no other choice but to leave it with the hands of the technicians.)
    Jan 3, 2011
Apple technician called around 8pm in the evening, he told me the problem was with the LVDS cable that attaches the logic board to the lcd panel. I was very patient (because i seriously don't think it's the LVDS cable) and not let my anger out as he is just a fellow who's trying to fix my computer. Long story short, he told me they don't have the parts and need another 3-5 days.
Anybody has a similar problem? Does it make sense that the LVDS cable can cause the mac not able to boot up?

I agree that policy with regard to replacement of online purchases vs in-store doesn't make any sense. As a customer, this experience would of frustrated me a lot. It's good you were able to eventually get a new iMac but it makes sense for them to try to fix it first before replacing it. I think before the 3rd repair I would've escalated the issue until I got to the store leader. If they understand you need it back quickly, they will usually do their best to make you happy. Of course, not everybody's perfect.
In my experience, if you need to have something soon, you need to politely go up the management chain. I never heard of the first tier employee being able to replace an iMac or do any other kind of replacement. It's always the store leaders and Genius admins that can accommodate these kind of issues.
The store leader is your friend and it's their store's reputation on the line. Ask for his/her email address and vent out your frustration to them. Recommend what you would've done as an AppleCare person to accommodate your issue. It's this kind of feedback that makes them better. Who knows, they may even reward you for your valuable feedback.

  • Start-up/Display Video Card Problem

    Hi there,
Does anyone know what the error code 2NYD/1/4 ox5 means please? My iMac G4 flat panel won't start-up. I get a kernel panic or just a blue screen. It does start in safe mode, so I am really hoping it is nothing serious, though I can still see lines in the display. I would also like to know if this is a known issue with this model (M8935) that Apple would repair for free. The graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce4 MX. I know some Apple G5 models were issued with faulty graphics cards or logic boards. Were some G4 models also faulty? Thanks
    Saz

    Hi Ian,
I'm entirely in agreement with what you say and can't think of anything to add whatsoever. That kind of error code can only be dealt with (AFAIK) with a logic board replacement (£325 + fitting).
I would suggest a PMU reset only because it can't do any harm at this stage:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95165
    cheers
I'd recommend backing up as soon as possible (or using Firewire Target Disk Mode to save data) to an external drive or computer. Repairing this iMac is probably not cost effective.

  • Freeze of screen randomly on Macpro early 2008 !

    Hey,
I'm owner of a Macpro early 2008 that worked fine since three years now. Since few weeks it has started to develop a strange "bug". Randomly, after few minutes, or hours, or sometimes never during the day (I shutdown my computer in evening and put it back on in the morning), the two screens plugged on Macpro freezes. When it happens, each both screens connected each one on a separate graphic card freezes but mouse cursor can still be moved on screen and computer is still running as I can still hear music playing !
I didn't find any link between applications or what I do on computer with occurence of that strange freeze !
Any ideas ? I tried to plug both screens on same graphic card thinking it might be the Geoforce graphic card that has some issues but same problem ! It looks like problem occurs more and more often these last few days. Looks like something is dying
    Thanks for your ideas,
    Vincèn

I've exact same problem with my mac pro 2010, but my problem still persist. My spec is 2 x 2.66 Ghz, 2 x 1TB SATA Hard disk, 8 GB of DDR3 ram 1333 Mhz. I am using a different graphic card which is ATI Radeon 5770 HD. with only 1 display and I've done intense gaming on bootcamp windows 7 64bit without any problem except with the AppleHFS.sys file.
Here is what I've done which might help you problem:
Boot into safe mode by holding shift key during bootup and see if the freeze still occurs. If it doesn't It's more likely due to your 3rd third kernel extension.
Check the Console application located at Appplications>Utilities> and see if there are any diagnostic error relevant to the freeze. (i.e. look the time stamp of each message and compare to your computer reboot time stamp.
Use disk utility and check errors for your drive. Click on the actual hard disk rather than the partition volume and click on verify disk, if there is a lot of red error message, means your disk have serious problem. Repair disk will not work if it's located on the same boot drive. But you can boot from the mac OSX installation DVD by pressing and holding C during boot.
After you booted from the hard disk, choose your language and click next. Then you will see a menu bar on top of screen. Click on utilities and then click on Disk utility. On the left hand side is a list of the disk detected by you mac. Click on the boot drive (not the volume), and check the S.M.A.R.T status of the disk. If its verified it may be okay. Then click on verify disk to check the disk for error. If you see a lot of red message from the log, it means your disk is corrupted. Try and use disk utility and click on repair disk to repair the disk.
If Disk Utility fails, there is another 3rd repair tool called diskwarrior. I've never used it. and it cost ~$99 USD for full version. Apparently it's the best software to mac to check disk error and repair.
If all your disk seems to be normal, I'd use superduper to backup your data and do a clean install of OS X from the installation disc again. If your problem persist. Try to use the apple hardware test, which is on the application installation dvd that comes with your mac, insert it into the dvd driver and boot while holding D button. When they AHT is ready, press ctrl + L to set it into loop mode. and let it run over a long period of time. It will stop when it encounters an error or hardware problem. This will detect faulty hardware, but I don't think it works on graphic cards.
If the above mentioned steps do not work for you, I suggest contacting AppleCare. I've been experience exact same problem with os x 10.6.7 SL. I've done all the above steps and problem still persist. Did a looped AHT overnight with 8 passes without encountering any error.
I am suspecting bad batch or memory modules or bad motherboard. My problem pops up randomly and hard to reproduce, sometimes I can be only all day without any issue, and sometime it procured right after boot or clean install of os x. It even happened once when I was booted from the installation DVD.
But I was using after market peripheral mouse and keyboard, I've reverted back to apply default keyboard and magic mouse to see if it is the logitech G19 or Razer Epic Naga mice that's causing the problem.
So far, I ruled out the G19 keyboard as using the Naga Epic Mice along also procured a freeze, (not sure why, but Mac detected the naga mice as a keyboard probably due to the keypad on the side.) It tried to make me identify the keyboard as I plug in the razer mic, but as it has no z and / button I could not finish the identification process.
Before that, I was using the G19 keyboard and the Razer mice simutaneously, After swtiching and using either one of them made me realsed that the Keyboard identification on OSX is not for the G19 but instead for the razer. I've been foolishly using the G19 keyboard for the keyboard identification process. I am not sure if this is the cause of the my freezing problem (2 x keyboard detected and G19 keyboard used to identify the naga epic mice).
Try the steps I mentioned above and see if it fixes your issue, and can you let me know if you are currently using any after market keyboard and mice, cause if you do... it will help me narrow down my problem before I have to wait in a long queue on line for applecare to check my problem and tell me to do things that I've already done.
    Cheers.

  • MacPro early 2008 kernel panic at startup - need help!

I have a MacPro early 2008 with OS 10.7.5 and I can't get it to restart without getting a kernel panic error. I get it at the grey screen at normal startup, safe mode, and trying to boot from the original install disk. I reset SMC and PRAM and still nothing. Running the extended diagnostics last night turned up no error codes. Any ideas?
Not sure what else to try at this point other than ordering a replacement graphics card which could be a chore to find in itself. Is there anyway to confirm if that is it?
    Thanks!

this is the last one I got before everything stopped.

  • Just bought a second hand MacPro early 2008 running Mavericks. How do I reset it to standard deleting previous owner admin account?

Just bought a second hand MacPro early 2008 running Mavericks. How do I reset it to standard, deleting previous owner admin account?
The previous owner seems to have cleared most of his stuff but I can't make changes as it's asking for the admin password!
Is there a way to reset the MacPro back as if I was logging on for the first time so that I can set it up as my computer?

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number onthis page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
    a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from theApple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

  • MacBook Pro 15" video card problems (i think)

Can anyone tell me if this is indeed a video card problem?
    MBP 15" info (Dec. 2011)
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    OS X Lion 10.7.5
    This is what happened:
I use my mbp heavily because I edit a lot of videos with Premiere. I also use lightroom / photoshop alot + games. I also installed Parallels desktop late 2013. I don't know if that is relevant but anyway. Everything started late 2013 (a little after installing parallels actually) when there are moments when the audio wouldn't work and I couldn't adjust the volume. It would come back anyway so i didn't mind it. Then the fans were on high speed for little activity. After that the keyboard backlight couldn't be adjusted and wouldnt work. I ignored all of these cuz i wasn't troubling me at the time. In January i left for france to study - I use bike all the time and once stupidly placed my laptop on the basket going to school (rough roads). I had a class with html so I had to open Parallels, my teacher pointed out the fans and how loud they were. That day, parallels desktop said i must upgrade to windows 9 or it will restart every 2hours. I didn't of course. I didn't have time to.
After that (a few days later i think) my laptop would randomly turn into a black screen but it's still on (the power LED is on) I tried turning it off by pressing down the power button and then turning it back on. It worked the first time. During the first week, the frequency of it happening grew. It would do it almost 3 times a day. during that same week I tried to do an SMC reset. It fixed the keyboard light, fans and audio but not the black screen thing. It just keeps on happening around 1-3 times a day. It only happens when I'm using it btw, never when I just leave it. ALSO, after a few days, it would take longer hours to open my mbp again. I mean, the screen would turn black. i would turn it off, then on again. I will ONLY hear the hard drive moving but no startup sound and no grey screen and apple logo. nothing.
The following weeks after that, I asked a friend to help me out. He suggested that I install gfxCardStatus because he said it might be my video card. He instructed that I keep it on intergrated only. So I installed that and did what he said I thought it worked for a while because the black screens stopped happening (even when gfx keeps on going back to dynamic) BUT NOW, MY LAPTOP WOULD FREEZE (not turn black). I'd shut it down using the power button but it still takes me hours to open it again. Sometimes, I'd wait for the battery to drain because it would startup when i charge it (sometimes)
    I tried doing AHT as well to confirm the video card problem, but the results are no problems found. I really don't want to replace my logicboard here in france. everything is more expensive here. ;__;
Today I uninstalled parallels to see if that might have had anything to do with my problem now but i think that's just wishful thinking.
Can somebody tell me if this is really about the video card? Thank you

can someone help me ? could it be a video card problem ? anyone had this problem ?
I have to force shut down and it's quite annoying
    thanks

Restart your MacBook and hold down on the "d" key for "diagnostics". This will startup the MacBook into the Apple Hardware Test. Run the extended tests. Let's see if you don't get an error when it checks the video system.

  • Help, T420s display/video card issue!

Hi, all. I would appreciate for any input.
Recently it happened a lot with my T420s especially when I was on full-screen video playback. The screen suddenly became like the image I attach below and there was no response at all. Then after 30 seconds or so, the system would shut down. I suspect it a over-heat problem with my video card. BTW, the fan in my T420s is also running like crazy all the time, I have put up with this ever since I got my laptop
My last laptop was T61. With all the Nvidia video card problem before, I am so afraid this would hit me again. Should I return the laptop immediately to Lenovo. I am writing my thesis right now with this computer. Really cannot afford not having my computer for some time.
    Solved!

Did the machine ship less than 21 days ago?  If yes, yes to the question above.  At least that is what  would do.

    Hello everybody!
I want to buy a UPS energy backup for my MacPro Early 2008 with 2x 2.8ghz, 2x HD 1TB, and 16gb ram
How much power consume this configuration?, and how many VA or Watts I need to get with the UPS?

  • Help! Stutter problems with 10.6.8 MacPro early 2008

I'm running 10.6.8 on an early 2008 Mac Pro.
My problem is that recently everything has gone "stuttery" :
    • Running a video through Youtube gives a 0.5sec video freeze every 30sec,
    • Opening up MacRumors webpages displays the first half of a forum page, then it hangs for 1-2 sec before displaying the rest.
    • Scrolling through Finder windows isn't smooth
    • Using time machine takes longer than 1 hour to perform even small hourly backups so is in constant use (problem exists even with TM turned off)
    * Checking Activity monitor I don't have any rogue processes running.
    • Bootdisk still has 275Gb free.
    * Logging in to the computer as a new account doesn't give these problems so I'm ruling out a graphics card/hardware/HDD problem.
When I got this computer, new, 4 years ago I used migration assistant to grab the contents off my previous Mac. As a result I have shed loads of stuff on here but the problem only started in the last month. I haven't installed anything I can think of in that time. Due to the above criteria I'm convinced it's something running in the background that's corrupt (Java?) rather than a hardware issue, but with so many files on my system I don't know where to start (and I don't want to erase stuff randomly until it stops!)
Can anyone suggest a diagnostic procedure/app to help track down what's causing this really irritating stutter on my Mac?
    Thanks

    OK, two things to try:
Do you have Javascript activated (not Java)?
Is your version of Flash Player up to date?
You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.  Version 11.4.402.265 is for Snow Leopard onwards.
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.

  • Is this a display problem, video card problem, OS problem, or ???

Sorry for the long post, but it is needed for background...
I spent the better part of the past 2 hours trying to figure out why my G5 wouldn't boot up. It had been off for around 4 days while I was out of town and up to this point I only had sporadic power up problems, usually having to push the button on the front of the G5 instead of the display which seemed to go to pot after a repair (under warranty) in December. Here's where the display comes in.
After running DW, resetting PRAM and SMU, and unplugging everything, I still could not get it to boot past the initial blueish screen (no login prompt). So, on a whim, I unplugged the keyboard from the back of the 23" Cinema Display (clear case) and plugged it into the front USB port of the G5. It booted right up.
So now I start wondering if the power button on the front of the display which has been very spotty and now seems almost toast is a possible culprit. Or if the USB hub in the monitor is a culprit. Or if it could possibly be the X800 XT causing the problem. Keep in mind it was upgraded 1.5 years ago and I never a problem till now.
To make matters more interesting, this monitor has been in for repair twice in the last 6 months for the same problems - the LCD panel keeps going wonky (pinkish coloring on top or sides or bottom or all round) and as such, the LCD panel itself has been replaced twice. The first time I ever had a problem turning the system on via the front monitor panel was after the first repair. So....
I'm thinking the monitor is on it's way out, but I am leery of having Apple try another repair on this since each time it gets repaired it seems to have something else wrong with it. I'm am terribly close to the end of my AppleCare, too. So if I need to do something it needs to be soon.
Or do you folks think it could be the video card? Which would suck just as bad considering how much that cost when I bought it. Let me know your thoughts on this so I can make a decision on which avenue to explore next. I dread going through AppleCare again, though.....any way to skip right to level 2 or higher support???
    Thanks.
    Anthony C.

Well I called AppleCare yesterday and, believe it or not, we actually got the USB ports acting normally - well at least I can boot up with the keyboard plugged into the back of the monitor.
They had me reset the Open Firmware and that seemed to do the trick. Of course, the night before I updated to 10.4.10 so that may have had something to do with it, too. No idea.
As for the power sensor button thing, they wanted me to plug the monitor into a different system, either at a Genius Bar or a friend or whatnot to see if it would behave in the same manner - not wanting to activate. I took it to school with me and hooked it up to one of my teacher's G5 and it behaved the same way. It took like 15 times touching the sensor to bring the system up.
So I'll be calling them back and see where they want to go with this. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a new shiny monitor - or not...

  • Cintiqs, Monitors, and Video card problems.

    Hi all,
Alright so first of all. I have a 2008 MacPro 3,1 QuadCore.
I'm an animator so I have a duel monitor setup. They're both pretty crappy but run really nicely with my graphics card. I currently have just one ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB video card. It has three outputs, two mini display ports and one DVI-I port. So I always have an extra output.
Alright now that I've set the scene, one MacPro, two monitors. Enter one Cintiq. I finally pulled the trigger on getting a Cintiq. I know! Its awesome, I love it.
It works great I couldn't ask more from the machine.
Just one problem. Even though I have three video outputs, I'm not able to connect all three (2 monitors 1 cinitq) all at once. Its super annoying to have to swith out the cords everytime I want to do anything with the cintiq. I've had 3 monitors plugged in at the same time so I know its not a faulty card.
I would love to be able to have my cinitq and the other 2 monitors all running at once. From what I've read online it looks like I'll have to get a second graphics card that I can connect the cintiq into.
Any recomendations on a new card? is there any way I can avoid paying the extra $150 for a new one?
Another thought on that. Is it even possible to connect two different types of video cards into the same machine? I'm assuming its just by brand so the drivers don't get mixed up?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Dann

No need for a different video card, just some different plumbing.
In order to get all three ports going, you need active adapters on the mini display ports. The Apple part most of us have is passive.
I was having the same problem you discribe except my "CinTiq" was a HD color grading monitor for my post-production work. I got a pair of these:  Accell B087B-006B UltraAV Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Single-Link Active Adapter ATI Certified (Black) and my problems were over.
Your CinTiq may have additional requirements, so check it all out, but I think this'll get the job done.
    good luck

  • Kernel Panic MacPro Early 2008 with Lion 10.7.5

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro (Early 2008) and for the past few months I have been getting regular (but intermittent - like every few days) kernel panics and I thought I should try to get to the bottom of the problem.
I seem to recall that they started happening after a software update for OS X Lion, but perhaps not.
