MacPro (early2008) with RAID Card - Other HDD's not seen?

Hello
I have a MACPRO (early 2008) with an first gen apple RAID card installed.
the RAID is set to mirror.
The HDD for the RAID are SAS seagate cheetah x2, these are in bays 1 and 2.
In Bays 3 and 4 I have other HDD's, and Would like one to be a SPARE and the other to be TIME MACHINE Backup.
Trouble is the HDD's in Bays 3 and 4 do NOT show up on either Desktop OR in DISK UTILITY.
Why is this?
and how do i go about in getting these HDD's in BAYS 3 and 4 to show up and carry out the TASKs I would like to set them up for?

Mixing SAS and SATA are in there now controlled by the RAID card?

  • '09 Mac Pro 8 Core 2.93ghz with Raid Card

Last year Apple swapped an '08 to '09 machine to solve a raid-battery issue in the original raid card of the '08 machine. Battery would fail to recondition after about the second attempt. It took a year of calling Apple and finally they came through supplementing version 1 raid card with version 2 and a new machine.
The error was noted in the RAID utility '08 machine as (Battery Failed(0x0#=18)).
As it happens, I don't use RAID but needed the card at first purchase to run fast SCSI drives for music production within the machine as I transport the machine to various venues and they had to be contained within for my applications. When I purchased the machine I also purchased the SCSI drive. It was about a 9K investment with ram. I always buy Apple Care fortunately.
Now, I have this '09 machine which yesterday exhibited the same raid card battery conditioning failure on about the second or third reconditioning attempt so I called Apple today and they are sending a replacement battery.
The reason I post this here is that this error described above is exactly what happened on the '08 machine and it's raid card. Apple's first attempt to repair starts with the battery, then replacement of the entire raid card if that does not work, then finally they do whatever is required to solve the problem. All this is good but it takes allot of my time and I need the machine to function now.
Please note, If I ran the machine less the raid card and say 4 WD raptor drives I would have none of these issues and similar speed per drive internally. This is exactly what I asked for back on the original machine. I just wanted to be done with attempting a raid/mac machine. The machine upgrade was fine but I hope were not looking at another year to sort all this out again.
I wondered if anyone else out these purchase a Mac Pro with this configuration and has had similar experiences they might share?
I really don't want another year to go by before it's rectified although with this new RAID version 2 possibly I'm ok. Any advance sharing of info would be greatly appreciated as I wait for the battery replacement coming in a few days in attempts to fix the problem. Unfortunately, this could be a temporary fix allowing only a few months of operation prior to another failure, we'll see. This machine is a mission critical one used every day for production.
    Thanks for reading this post.

I have almost never read anything good about Apple Pro RAID, and try to steer people away ever since 2007 when it came out...
Still have a closet full of ATTO and Adaptec SCSI but times have changed.
WD is even coming out with 600GB 10K VelociRaptor for $299.
And there seems to be a new rash of RAID and battery questions popping up again.
Audio and music use to mean you needed Fibre and SCSI and the lowest latency, probably even now. But Apple internal RAID?
Any reason why can't be external? Maybe see about replacing with Apple FC or 3rd party?

  • Mac PRo with raid card shipped with drive not suitable for raid?

    Hi all,
I ordered a Mac Pro with raid card and a 1TB hard drive. The drive which came in the computer was WDC WD1001FALS which is not a hard drive rated for raid usage. On Western Digital's site they suggest using WD1002FBYS.
Is the model WD1001FALS the correct drive which Apple ships although one ordered the raid card?

The WD 640GB Blue, and WD 1TB Black are the only drive options for the mac pro; that's what you choose.
The RE3 (or FBYS) is not an option sold through apple. Buying the raid card, is not going to change the drive.
On whether to use the RE3 over the Blacks, it depends on how you will be using it. From what I've heard, the Blacks are enterprise drives themselves; basically with just a less robust firmware (no TLER). If you will have the drives on 24/7 in a raid 5, then yes, RE3 will probably be better. If not, I think the black will suffice; note the blacks are GREAT drives by themselves anyway.
The apple raid card can connect to both SATA and SAS drives internally, however most times people buying the raid card want to use it for SAS drives. There are a lot more cheaper and possibly a lot more stable options then apple's raid card if you are looking to use SATA drives.
    Check amug:
    http://www.amug.org/
A common problem with the apple raid card is the battery:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA849Z/B?mco=NDc1ODczNw
Lastly about enterprise drives, truthfully I don't see the difference really. I have enterprise drives in a 8-drive raid5 config running 24/7 as a server. 2 drives died on me after about 4 months. To top it off, they died within 10 min of each other, crushing the raid to pieces. Granted they were Seagate ES.2's, it's understandable
The boot drive of the server is a stock desktop WD drive and running 24/7. It's been running for almost 4 years straight.

  • LR 2.6 crashes on MacPro with Raid card

I have an 8core macpro with 32 gigs of memory.  It also has an  apple raid card with three, 2gig hitachi enterprise level drives configured in a raid 5.  It also has an SSD in the second superdrive bay with the system and program files.
I run LR2.6 and have about 50k images on the raid.  There is a total of 1.6tb of data on the raid.
When moving between images in LR (any module) very often the program will freeze and the beach ball comes out.  The only way to fix is to force quit and restart.
Has anyone had a similar problem?
    Mike

Thanks,.  But I'm actually creating a new folder from within LR's import  menus, so I can't see as that would be a problem.

  • Need help with RAID Card and degraded Raid-5 errors

    Dear all,
I recently purchased a used Apple RAID card for my 2008 Mac Pro 8-Core. The installation went smooth, the card was immediately recognized and the battery reconditioned within one night.
So I started setting up a Raid Set with the 4 identical drives which I already used before as a software Raid. But each time the Raid Level-5 Volume is created, somewhat later the status turns red and the Raid is listed as "degraded"!
A closer look at log reveals:
    +19:42:54 Drive carrier 00:01 inserted+
    +19:42:27 Background task aborted: Task=Init,Scope=DRVGRP,Group=RS1+
+19:42:27 Degraded RAID set RS1 - No spare available for rebuild+
    +19:42:26 Degraded RAID set RS1+
    +19:42:22 Drive carrier 00:01 removed+
+15:10:57 Created volume “R1V1” on RAID set “RS1”+
So it seems that the drive from Bay 1 somehow gets lost (removed) a few hours after the volume is being created and anysoon later it's being "reinserted"...
Of course, the drive is NOT removed, nobody touched the Mac Pro! Also I did the same procedure 3 times and the result was always the same.
I also tried setting up JBOD and different RAID levels which do all work without a problem. Only when choosing RAID5 (what I intentionally bought the card for), the problem reappears
Anyone any solution or hint for me concerning this problem? Many thanks in advance!

One drive completely broke down later. Replaced that drive and since the problem's gone!

  • Constant KPs in New MacPro Pointing to RAID Card

    Good morning,
Facing a bit of a vexing issue and thought I would see if anyone else out there is seeing the same thing.
I have 2 new Mac Pros, fresh out of the box running the latest Lion public build (10.7.1) and they're both KPing at random intervals. The logs seem to point to the RAID driver as the culprit, but doing a complete wipe and erase on the system seems to do nothing to resolve the matter. Part of me thinks this is because we're having to restore from the App Store rather than a dedicated system disk for the unit which would have the drivers - but that sounds paranoid. Surely Apple would have the needed drivers and various firmware download as part of the reinstallation process?
Curiously, these crashes occur even when the system is not accessing the RAID or writing to it.
At any rate, here is the latest crash log. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

    Hi,
I've had exactly the same issue. Whenever my Macpro is doing lots of computations it will crash, even when I am neither reading nor writing to/from the internal RAID drive. What were you doing when they crashed? I did a hardware test and it is not hardware related. I am still waiting for Applecare people to retunr my calls...
This is the latest crash report.

  • Intel Xserve With Raid card Remote install Question

I am currently trying to remotely install OSX server on an Intel 2008 Xserve with a newly fitted raid card (Apple) I get as far as choosing which HD to install but none of the drives show? (there are all Apple brand 300GB SAS)
Can I only install it locally on the machine if a Raid card/SAS drives are in there??
    Thanks

    Hi,
I just started to do the same. Did you find a solution?
    Thanks,

  • Different RAID card and HDDs

    Hello -
I did some searches for older posts, but didn't find anything with a definite answer.
I know the Apple RAID FAQ mentions that only Apple drives are supported with the RAID card both some posts have said this is not the case anymore. And there are several posts with people buying new WDs and Seagates for their Pros. So does the Apple RAID card support other drives?
My next question is does the Pro support any other RAID card beside the Apple one? If so, are there any recommendations on a good one? Will it work fine with the Pro form factor and with OS X?
    Thank you

Search through http://www.amug.com which reviews most every controller and hard drive, as does http://www.barefeats.com
RAID is a frequent topic, search for userid "mbean" and "RAID" and you'll come across some very in-depth replies.
What do you need your setup for though is the first question. And whether $799 is the best bet, first.

  • Want to buy a app from the app store with debit card but it's not working

How do I buy apps with my debit card

Sign in to the iTunes Store. You can do that from the iTunes menu bar.
    Click Store > Sign In
Then back to the menu bar click Store > View My Account
In the Account Information window click the Edit button to the right of Payment Type
Enter your debit card number, the expiration date, and the security code from the back of the card.
Enter your billing address. Your billing address must be the same as the billing address on your debit card account.
    Then click Done.
Now you can purchase iTunes media.
Sometimes on new accounts Apple will place an "authorization hold" on your debit card for approximately $1. If you see this charge on your debit card statement, it's ok, Apple will credit that amount back in 24 to 48 hrs. All that is doing is verifying your account status.
And when you make purchases, take into account any applicable taxes and fees > iTUNES STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS

If you don't want to give credit card details then there are instructions on this page for creating a new account (the instructions won't work on existing accounts) without giving card details : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534 - if you don't use those instructions when creating an account then card details will need to be given before the account can be used in the store

  • Is osx mountain lion compatible with mac pro (4,1) w/ raid card?

I noticed Apple isn't selling the Mac Pro's with raid cards anymore, so it makes me wonder of Mountain Lion is compatible with my Mac Pro which uses the apple mac pro raid card.  Anyone know??

Thanks Kappy.  I'm more interested in the RAID card compatibility.  Anyone else know?

  • Non-Apple RAID card with internal drives possible on 2009 model ?

    Hello there,
I have decided against the Apple Raid card, since it does not support any other drives than the ones sold through the Apple Store and it also only supports up to 1 TB drives.
My goal is to have 3x 1.5 TB drives in a RAID 5 array.
Does anybody know any hardware Raid 5 capable adapters, that can be used with internal 1.5 TB drives & the early 2009 Mac Pro model ?
    Cheers,
    Martin

Once upon a time, in a land far far away, ATTO and LSI, and Adaptec mainly owned the storage market for Mac controllers, and even then in those happy times we heard there was Voodoo in the land, and a curse on what were the Rules of SCSI Voodoo, and one had to be careful that a drive really was certified and tested, and one had to insure which firmware version one was talking about, not just any which firmware - and controllers also had to be updated as well.
Signal processing over SCSI with good active termination, cable length, and 160 pins (and cable strands) (and no noise or crosstalk, good insulation).
If one did all of the above, and was careful, you were rewarded with a working storage controller and array and the best possible performance at the time.
And sometimes you could venture off the reservation... a little, and some drivers could patch and work around bugs in firmware or other problems - just as bugs in cpu, boot firmware, and microcode can be patched by the OS kernel. And people would pay for retail drivers, or they would have to rely on the vendor's bundled driver (that may only work on their own drives and no others).
Hard Disk Toolkit, Silverlining and others made name for themselves, amoung others that now have faded into oblivion for most.
But it still exists when you venture beyond consumer and pro-consumer devices and venture to use FC-SCSI, SCSI, and SAS. And taking a chance when you try to use off the shelf SATA storage products and solutions. There are times when OEM drives really are OEM-only and a good thing; and times to avoid.
And there is no list of any kind of successfully used non-Apple drives, though there is word-of-mouth of a few that definitely need to be avoided.

  • Raid Card and Multiple Hardrives.

does anyone have any idea if I can use the raid card to use a seperate hard drive to run windows and then use another drive for mac OSX? That way I don't have to worry about partitioning my hardrive. If there is any way to do so I would really like to know. Also any cheaper suggestions for a raid card?

Fact is you cannot use the APPLE RAID CARD and also run Windows on any of the internal SATA ports. Unless you want to play around with iPass or reroute the cables.
    http://www.apple.com/support/macpro/
I consider the RAID card more hinderance, and not just in terms of Boot Camp.
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Windows 7 is fine, more users probably than use Leopard, and runs well, no issues, and better than Vista even with SP2.

  • Raid card issue - missing drive

I have bought some new Mac Pro 2010 Dual 2.93GHZ Xeon (6 core) machine, with Raid Card and 4 2TB drives and then set up a Raid 1 and a Raid 0 on the machine striped for safe&speed as I use the machine for video editing and motion graphics. From the first day, I have issues with 3 machines (out of 5): the raid keeps failing. Both raids work fine, then without warning the Raid Set falls over. Every time it has fallen over, it is usually when the drives and the Raid are not being used. It commonly gives me this type of error - Drive 3:5000cXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX failure detected - Primary disk port unusable, previous drive status was inuse, followed by Drive 3:5000cXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX missing - Previous drive status was inuse. The drive (Bay 2 usually) in realy mising from RAID UTILITY Tool. After reboot the drive reappears and I can make it Spare, in order to rebuild the volume. In the first instance I thought it's about Power Management, but even after disabling HDD power off, I have the same situation.
Apple dealer is still looking at one machine, but... Did anyone meet similar behaviour?

I'm having the exact same problem, or at least really similar.
I thought I'd configure everything as RAID-0, all brand new drives. Those shouldn't crash very fast.
Big mistake of course... But the weird thing is, in the RAID_Utility it says all the drives are "green" smart: checked and status: good. But it removed one of the disks from my raid. Is there any way I can "plug" that drive back into my raid set? Because the drive is ok, but it's just de-coupled from the set....
    ty!
