MacPro Hum and Airport Problems

Well…first post here and i wish it was more…positive. I love my shiny new MacPro but it does some pretty annyoing things. And I'm sure I'm not the only one experiencing these.
When i got my MacPro everything seemed to work perfectly. Absoluetly silent except for the faint whisper of the fans. Airport seemed to work great. The room i tested it in wasn't too quiet though.
When i took it home, first thing i noticed was a totally annoying, sinewave like hum, mmmmhm, mhhhhmm. Quick google search told me i wasn't the only one, and actually led me to several threads here. Well…next day, i took all the drive bays out, tightened the screw of my two drives (WD and Maxtor) put them back in slot 1 and 2. ****. Hum got worse. Took them out again, put them in 3 and 4. Hmm…silent? Not. Took them out again untightened the screws so the drive had some space to vibrate. Put them back into bay 3 and 4 which seem to be the only ones I could get the **** drives to be quiet. Well…that did it. NO hum, no nothing except for the fans. My head (which started to hurt because of the buzzing sound) felt relieved.
Thing worked for two weeks. Sometimes internet connection felt slow – thought it must be the metal casing.
Two days ago, i surfed the net, got tired, went down to take a nap, got upstairs again 3 hours later, found the machine sleeping. Pressed the mouse button and …****! What's that sound? Yeah, guess what, nice hum. Bah! Turned the machine off, restarted, waited, left the room…was still there. Thought I was going crazy. Two days later, right now, I'm sitting in front of a loud, buzzing MacPro. Nothing helped. Tightened the screws, untightened them, moved the carriers around…reduced it a liiiiitle bit, but i can still hear it. Bad thing is, it's the kind of noise you just CAN'T ignore.
My old workstation sounds like a 747 taking off, but that noise is actually less annyoing then the constant buzz. Drives me mad. I thought about retuning it and getting a replacement, but honestly, i need the thing.
Within the two weeks that it worked silently, i already installed all the important software i need (for osx+xp) and started working with it. Huge amount of 3D-Files and HD frames already on the disk. I went to check out other MacPros and they all hummed. Some very loud, some very faint. Judging from the discussion on the net plenty of MacPros do it, my guess is that ALL will do with the same combination of drives.
So why do i post this? Well…maybe someone else got a cool flashy new way of getting rid of the noise that hasn't been posted before. I'm going to try some rubber washers but I'm not too sure if that'll even work, seeing as theres not much space on the drive carriers for screw+rubber. So it gotta get some new, longer screws too, noot TO long though so it doesn't scratch the panel above the carriers. GAH. And here i thought this way of mounting drives was elegant. It IS, the MacPro looks totally great, even it's interior but ****…the noise!
Ah…i've nailed the "loud drive" down to the standard WD which was originally seated in bay 1 and now in 3. It's loud, however, it alone doesn't create a sinewave-like hum so i can live with that. The other drive (maxtor) is dead silent from normal distance, however, when i put my ear close to it, you can hear a VERY faint up-and-down-noise…thingy. I was thinking of replacing one of the drives (most likely the WD) with another silent 250GB one.
Do you guys know of any quite drives? Maybe I've got a monday morning drive and the WD's are quite? Samsung, Seagate…Maxtor?
Will making a 1:1 clone of the drive I'm going to replace work using dd? I'm not sure if it will correctly dublicated my boot drive (150GB OSX HFS+ + 80 GB Windows XP NTFS).
That's it for the noise. Maybe someone has any ideas, would be happy!
Now. Aiport. Is there any official word from apple? I haven't called them yet but it seems like pretty much everyone's getting bad performance from their airport card. With the access panel off I usually get 3 bars, when it's on usually 1-2 or even none. I've head that the actual antenna is at the bottom so i don't get why lifting the panel would make any difference.
I also read that the correct cables need to be connected to the aiport card. I can see three, label 1 2 and 3. 2 and 3 are connected to the airport card, 2 at the bottom. That correct? Do they even make a difference…my guess is not since the seem pretty much identical but who knows. I've seen some funny thing dealing with hardware.
Network performance on the MacPro is poor under OSX (got rid of the network drivers for XP cause it ain't supposed do get anywhere near the internet ;)).
Any ways to fix this?
Then there's the sound thingy with the linout and…nah. All of you know what i mean.
Other then that, the machine absoluetly screams. I'm a vfx artist so I totally profit from the 4 processors, and the thingy just feels speeeedy whatever it does. Congrats to Apple for such a nice computer…except for those pretty
basic faws.

I've got the same issue with the stock apple drive in slot 2. Nothing I've tried has gotten rid of the hum - I'm about to pull that drive and mount it in an external enclosure, as it's just a backup volume. Let us know if you come up with a good way of suppressing the vibration from drives in that slot.
Regarding quiet drives, I've got three Western Digital Caviar SE16 250 Gig drives, two of which are configured as a striped raid array for a scratch volume (primarily for video production). These are nice 7200 RPM SATA/300 drives that can be found for under $100 US, great performance and nearly silent. Some will recommend the more expensive WD Pro series (RE2) or Maxtor drives for RAID use (Hi, Ned!) - nice if you have the cash, but IMHO not altogether necessary for a workstation. If noise is a concern, these are great drives.

  • ITunes 6.0.5 and Airport Problem

A short description of my recent problem is that iTunes 6.0.5 crashes my wireless connection when streaming music to my stereo via an Airport Express. The problem was repeatable and frequent. Reverting to iTunes 6.0.4 seems to make all the problems go away.
Before updating my MacBook recently to 10.4.7 from 10.4.6, and updating from iTunes 6.0.4 to 6.0.5, I updated my bootable system backup on an external Firewire drive, first repairing permissions.
After updating my MacBook, everything associated with the Airport Express seemed to function perfectly, except I had massive problems with attempting to stream music from iTunes. When first choosing in iTunes to connect to the external wireless target, music would begin playing and then my entire airport connection would dispappear within seconds. The menu bar throughput icon would go from 4 bars to nothing and my network SSID would disappear from the drop down. After toggling the airport on and off for a while, along with toggling the iTunes external/internal target control, I could eventually finagle a stable connection, which would last for maybe 15 minutes at a time. Then the connection would drop.
I happened to be one of the early 10.4.7 upgraders who used the non-combo updater, so when Apple announced that files were missing from the delta updater, I downloaded the new version and repeated the upgrade (successfully, indicated by the suffix on the new build number). Again a perfectly stable wireless connection through the 133 MB download; wireless works fine as long as iTunes is not involved.
The problem persisted after the 10.4.7 re-upgrade. I then tried booting from my external drive backup, into 10.4.6 and iTunes 6.0.4. The problem went away.
I then restored iTunes 6.0.4 from my backup to my internal drive, replacing 6.0.5. So far, everything is working perfectly again, with iTunes 6.0.4 under OS 10.4.7.
The airport problem seemed to be entirely on the MacBook side, not the Airport Express, since I never saw the Airport light change from green and the displayed connection time has stayed at x days and counting across all the times the airport connection disappeared, including when booted from the external drive.
So based on my experience, it would appear that there is a problem with iTunes 6.0.5. Anyone else see similar behavior or, conversely, can confirm that they are successfully streaming from a configuration similar to a MacBook through an Airport Express with iTunes 6.0.5 and OS 10.4.7?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Just to bring closure to this thread, I am now successfully using iTunes 6.0.5 with OS 10.4.7: the problems I reported have disappeared.
Contrary to my original post, with more use I saw some drop-out problems with 6.0.4, though far less severe than with 6.0.5.
It occurred to me that maybe what I was seeing was due to the iTunes app paging, but I could find no direct evidence of that.
It then happened that I began experiencing the random shutdown problem that some MacBook users have reported (many posts in the MacBook forum). I sent in my machine for repair.
In the few days since I received the repaired machine back, I have had no random shutdowns. I also noticed I had no iTunes wireless dropouts with 6.0.4. I then re-upgraded to 6.0.5. No problems have surfaced. The only other software change at the system level I have made is to update the SMC firmware, which makes the machine run cooler.
I have no explanation and speculation seems pointless. (The shutdown repair consisted of replacing the heat sink and top case; as far as I know, no involvement with airport components.) But I'm again a happy camper.

  • IMac and Airport problems

Hello All - be gentle with me - Im not very techie and Im a windows refugee! so Im not well versed in the ways of Mac fully yet!!
Im having a problem with my iMac (which i love) and airport wifi..... The iMac is 5 months old and is running OS x 10.5.6 I am using a wireless Netgear modem/router on 802.1n. I have 100% signal strength in the Airport Status bar and it connects perfectly.....however about 4-5 minutes the signal just disappears and the Airport status bar greys out and I lose my wifi connection. When you click on the Airport in the status bar, even the network name has disappeared, and then about 20 seconds later it reappears and reconnects itself automatically. Its like the card is turning itself off and then back on again and rebooting and its doing it like clockwork.
I didn't really notice it at first, but it came to light when i bought a Time Capsule - which after 10 days of failed back ups I took back to the shop thinking it was that that was faulty.
As the problem is still there, i figured it might be a router/modem issue so i got our IT guy to check all the settings and he confirmed it was properly set up and working fine.
I've just bought a Mac Air Book also running Leopard 10.5.6 and the weird thing is that the Airport connection on that is bullet proof, as is the wireless connection on my daughters Windows XP Profession SP3 lap top - which leads me to conclude it has to be either a faulty airport card in the iMac or some sort of software issue ??
Any one got any suggestions how to fix the issue - as its driving me nuts! Is this a known issue ?

OK - this is early days, but this fix touch wood appears to have worked (after spending hours on the phone to Apple Support (who in fairness were very helpful)).
We tried all the usual routes - run disk checker, resolve conflicts, moving plists out of the library - exactly the same, if not worse.
Then we tried this - which HAS worked so far - 24 hours and it hasn't dropped once.
Dig out Disc 1 that came with your mac and put in to the drive. Click on the Apple logo. and then select - OSX Software. The Mac will want to restart - let it.
You then need to tell it to install OS X again. MAKE SURE you click the Install and ARCHIVE option - if you dont it will wipe your disk and all your settings and data. The Archive option basically saves all your settings and reinstalls them once the software has reinstalled.
My iMAC came with OS X 10.5.2. - once all this had reloaded (mine took about 2hours) - airport worked fine. Then the problem arose - my iMac is set up to automatically download and install updates - after about 10 mins, it beetled off to check, then loaded and installed Mac OS X 10.5.6 update together with Aiport Utility 5.3.2; Quicktime 7.6; Remote Desktop client 3.2.2; iTunes 8.0.2; and Frontrow 2.1.6 - it managed to download the whole lot in one go - about 750mb seemlessly without falling over - as soon as it installed however - my wifi connection went down.... :o(
So I figured there had to be a problem with one of the updates - so i started from scratch again and install/archive OS X 10.5.2. I then turned off the auto install updates feature, so i could manually install each update in turn, to see which one it was that upset Airport.
I found that if you download and install the updates 1 by 1 - then Airport remains happy....
I did it in this order..
    Remote Desktop
    Quicktime
    iTunes
    Airport Utility
    Front Row
    OS X 10.5.6
As I say i dont know if this is a permanent fix, but in 24 hours it hasn't dropped wifi once, and that's way longer than it has survived for the last 2 months.....
I have no idea why this apparently seems to work either - but it does seem to have cured it....

  • Relation between QuickTime 7.1.1 and AirPort problems

I've read a few thread talking of relations between
the last QuickTime 7.1.1 update and problems with AirPort
in one way or the opposite.
As this looked quite hard to explain I thoroughly checked
the QuickTime 7.1.1 update package and I can tell everyone for
    sure:
it doesn't include a bit that could interfere with the
    AirPort driver or software
You could double check it for yourself with the following
    steps:<pre>
    1. within "Software Update...", select "QuickTime 7.1.1"
and select "Update > Download Only"
    2. in a Terminal or xterm window, type the following
    commands:
    my_mac$ cd /Library/Packages/QuickTime711.pkg/Contents
    my_mac$ gzcat Archive.pax.gz | pax | egrep -i 'air|802'
    my_mac$ cd Resources
    my_mac$ egrep -i 'air|802' cleanup-list InstallationCheck
    my_mac$</pre>
Then, if your AirPort was "apparently" broken or repaired
just after the QuickTime 7.1.1 update, this was simply
due to the restart of your system.
    dan

If you've got quicktime pro working with 7.1.3, count yourself lucky considering all the reports about 7.1.5 problems. I was about to download QT Pro when I started reading the reviews. Most of them were bad. Is it working for you with 7.1.3, especially on creating media files? Do you use it with Final Cut Pro? I'd appreciate your feedback.

  • IMac 20 with firmware 1.0.0 and Airport problem

After searching the net and the forums here, I can't seem to find anyone else with this problem.
Since I experience some 1 gen intel mac problems, I thought I should update the firmware of my iMac to 1.0.0.
While this update cures some smaller annoyances, my Airport extreme card is not showing up at all. System profiler shows Airport Card as not installed. Restoring back to factory default firmware will show my airport card again.
    Anyone else with this problem?
I am step closer to invoking my warranty and making a case on this with Applecare, as I refuse to lay cat-5 cables all over just to get an brand new expensive computer on the net proper.

Firmware updates can not be undone. If you were able to successfully restore, that meant that your firmware was simply not updated, that the update failed. Once it has been successful, when it is tried yet again, a message will indicate it has already been done, and the process will not repeat.

  • Safari and airport problems

Safari started about a month ago getting hung up when loading, ending up with just not loading at all. Then I started getting messages that I was unable to join my network. I can get online at my office wirelessly(different network)but Safari is still very slow. At home, with my linksys router and Time Warner cable modem, I now only occasionally can get online. When I do get online, Ichat crashes continuously. My desktops work, and my husband's wireless radio works, but not my laptop. I have tried resetting router, called cable company and they said modem was fine. I removed plists and favicons, reset Safari, and added Open DNS numbers, which I later removed because it made connecting worse. I have run Disk Utility and repaired preferences. What is left??? I am reluctant to do the reinstall/archive. Pros and cons of this course of action? Sally

I had the Safari problem in terms of it getting hung up while loading web addresses and had to go through diagnostics every time I moved the laptop from office network to home instead of it switching automatically. How do I tell if Little Snitch is still there? I can see it in the download queue, but no where else. Also, even tho I have to switch manually to the office network and Safari is slow, at least I stay online here without Safari stopping or getting error messages, which makes me wonder if my router is messed up and contributing to problems. I have reset and unplugged my home router with no apparent effect. Sally

  • My Atv2 is  very slow movies and shows take forever to load it plays for a few minutes then pauses again. I thought if was a problem with my wireless router but I replaced it with a new airport extreme and the problem persists. Air play is just as slow.

My Atv2 is very slow with both AirPlay and rented and purchased content I spoke to apple rep and tried the things he suggested but the problem persists. Now it requires more lead time then the lenght of material being viewed. I haves broadband internet connection and airport extreme router so I don't think this should be a problem. Lately every time the unit goes to the screen saver an error message come up saying there was an error while loading content please try again later and you have to all over again. It is extremely frustrating. Any suggestions? What speed of transfer should I expect using AirPlay ?

I'm having the same issue.  Ay fixes?  Bought ATV today, music streams but videos don't and mirroring doesn't work either.  Start mirror and severe lag then just drops.  Been trying for couple hours. About ready to return it.

  • MacBook Pro and Airport connection problem

My MacBook Pro has a volatile connection to my Airport Express base station.
I have a 2-month old 15.4" MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo), all software updates are installed, etc. I connect to the internet through an Airport base station. For the past few days my MBP has had a dodgy connection, slowing down at seeming random and then occasionally disconnecting from the base station entirely, although the Airport icon on the MBP is always on. While downloading a file I noticed that the speed of the connection was incrementally slowing until it stopped, and it was only after a couple of retries and then connecting to the base station again (by finding it amongst the other networks on the pull-down menu that you get when you click on the Airport icon) that my connection resumed at its previous speed.
My 12" PowerPC iBook connects to the internet over this Airport base station at full speed, no problems.
I've tried resetting the PRAM on my MBP without change.
One possibly noteworthy change is that this past week I updated my Parallels software to 3.0, which may have an effect based on some of the other threads I've read.
    What now?!

After trying all of the above the suggestions, the problem returned as before. However, after digging some more I discovered that the issue appears to lie with the 10.4.10 version of the Mac OS; when I checked the software log under the system profiler I noticed that I had installed that update at about the time my Airport problems began. Apple then quietly released a v 1.1 combo update to 10.4.10 on July 2nd, which once installed appears to have resolved the problem. You can find the download at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
What's curious is that originally Apple listed that the v 1.1 combo update resolved some issues with RAW image data, and some sound problems, which don't seem to have anything to do with Airport.

I allowed Apple updates about two weeks ago and now Safari is way too slow.   I have tried using Airport and Ethernet and the problem is the same.  Yesterday, I upgraded to Safari 5.1 and now the problem is worse.  Any solutions?

I can't stand peremptory affirmations like "Nothing is wrong with Safari".
Thousands of users can't be wrong (see the discussions).
If I read you the right way, it's never software' fault, it's the user who's the culprit.
    Amazing!
In this very case, the fact is we can't give to "christinefromfonthill" a good solution because weren't sitting in front of her Mac.
You give her a good advice which could, perhaps, lead to an improvement.
But must also admit that Safari is a very slow browser compared to Firefox or Chrome.
And you can't ignore all the problems which arose when upgrading to Lion and were related to the new build and specs of Safari 5.1.
The best example is the apparition of "garbage type" (use of Last Resort font) when reading numerous sites. This never occured before and is the direct consequence of Safari compliance to Web Open Type. This standard prohibits the use of Type 1 Postscript Fonts and is the reason why so many people are in trouble.
I use a Mac for more than 25 years.
I am a very "clean" user who hates the bells and whistles of third party.
My Mac is always up-to-date and despite all my Mac loving care, I run into some problems.
Imagine the nightmare which can occurs for the vulgum pecus who isn't, by definition, a power user aware of all the requirements for running a System in optimal conditions.
May be Safari is one step in advance on its time but lambda users are paying the price for it.

  • MacBook Pro and Airport connectivty problems with 10.4.8

Like others I have been having problems with Airport drop-outs since updating to 10.4.8. Using the shareware program (free trial) "Airport Monitor Utility" which displays various parameters from an Airport Base Station, it seems that although the signal level from the MBP is good, the AEBS is reporting high levels of errors being received. The same problem is not evident with either an old Pismo with a Motorola 54g card or my MDD (again with an add-in 54g card).
Both the PC machines have no trouble conecting to the Airport network and they are also both running 10.4.8.
The only way it seems I can run a reliable connection with the MBP at the moment is to run the AEBS without encryption but just using MAC address filtering and SSID disabled for security - far from ideal
I am wondering if the high error rate may be a cause for the drop-outs when using encryption.
Could others with MBPs, whether suffering this problem or not, please post the results of error rates if possible then we may be able to at least eliminate one potential cause for this problem.
I've tried all the other suggested 'cures' and had no success....

Despite the title of the article, the included solution may rid you of AirPort wavering in and out of contact with the base station. It did that for me.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
However, I was then left with the situation that is the title of the article! Ironic:) My preferences for a particular network would no longer stick, and AirPort was self-assigning an unusable IP address.

Please describe whether your two AirPort base stations are both 802.11n-capable.  Also describe how you configured them.  Did you configure the AirPort Extreme to "allow this network to be extended"?  Did you configure the AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network"?

I Tunes continues to play uninterupted on the Mac.  The problem does not lie with the Express as it occurs on both of my 2 Express at the same time. is this a problem with the Extreme?

Well, repying to my own post... Might have found the solution: I tried to do the same with a Macbook Pro 2010 using the very same setup. And it worked perfectly! No freeze, no nothing.
    One explanation I see:
my iMac is dating back to May 2007, a Core 2 Duo 2,16Ghz with 2 Go of RAM.
So the computer's characteristics (or the Wifi component or the combination of all of this) might be not robust enough to allow streaming to those 2 devices...
    Anyone's got anything to add?

Hello...I am trying to use a Windows XP (SP2) with airport extreme base station....I have linked up the AEBS into an already existing Linksys router that is plugged into the Windows PC, Once Plugged in and airport Utility is opened, AU does not detect any apple wireless devices...when I choose to "Open Config file" option in Airport The Wi-Fi connection is activated and yet the AEBS still flashes amber. The Mac OS X and my ipod touch detect the Wi-Fi network and it is called Apple Network ca00xx (something like that) and it has NO encryption....so basically I want to ask....How would I ENCRYPT the network, and also is that Windows XP wireless enabled? Does the XP have to be Wi-Fi enabled in order to encrypt the network to the Touch and Mac?
