Macpro in a windows world

Hi - I have been a dedicated mac user for the last 4 years. I am now joining a small organization (totally Windows). I have the option to go with a new Macpro and run windows 7 inside parallels. Is this really wise? What difficulties will I see? I have heard using network printers can be a problem. Or, would it be easier to just get a new windows laptop and keep my mac for home? Thanks

You actually have two options. You can run Windows 7 inside Parallels, which can be fine but I've never used a network printer with it. The great advantage of this is that you can run Windows apps and Mac apps at the same time. But you'll need enough RAM to run both OS X and Windows at the same time.
Your other option is to reboot your Mac into Windows being run from a partition on your drive using Boot Camp. With this option, the entire machine is running Windows as if it was an actual Windows PC. The advantage of this is better compatibility and slightly better performance, but the disadvantage is that OS X is not running at all so you can't use Mac apps while booted into Windows.
You might also want to ask your question on the Parallels forums to see what difficulties people have run into. While I do run Windows 7 in Parallels, it's only for light occasional use so not heavily tested.

  • Import of MPEG2 Files out of Windows world??

    Hello everybody,
I'm brand new to the forum and I'm a switcher from the windows world. As I have a lot of experience on the windows world with video-edititng I was surprised how complicated and time consuming it is with the standard tools. Therefore I'm thinking of a different maybe easier solution. Final Cut express HD.
My question might be easy but for me essential:
Is it possible to import a windows mpeg2 file into final cut express hd without converting it to a dv file and how fast will the import be because in Imovie the import of a 2 hr movie takes 1 hrs to convert plus 10 hrs to import it to imove and now I'm doing the export to QT MG4 which takes about 1500 min.
Any information and help as well as hints are welcome.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    H Tom,
as you might see I'm brand new - what would FCE mean is it the format of the hard drive? I guess so. Whould this resume with the problem that I'm not able to write anything to my windows harddrives?
My problem so far and still is that it takes hours to import a movie which is 3 hrs long (only 1000 mins) and it is currently locking 60 % off my harddrive. The settings so far are only to convert to a DV (PAL) which is acceptable fast and then import to Imovie or FC express ?

  • CoExistence in a Windows World - OSX SL Not Seeing Windows Network

This will be a challenging post, I suspect.
OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.3: Finder is unable to see the windows network to which it is attached. Conversely, the windows network sees my iMAC and it's little sister (my wife's Mac Book Pro) just fine and dandy.
The Windows workstations have no trouble connecting to the MACs, and the MACs have no problem connecting to the PCs (SMB://ipaddress or machine name)
So why then can I simply not use Finder>Go>Network and see all the PCs and MACs on my network? Applecare couldn't help with this either, except to recommend a reinstall of OSX. Seems silly, because the iMAC is three days old, so nothing has been added! (Yet...)
    Here's the setup:
Home Network, all rooms homerun with cat5e wired to structured media closet in basement housing nice cisco gig-e switch uplinked to Motorola Router to cable provider.
5 Windows PCs + Server (3 kids w/win7, Laptop w/win7, server w/linux, and Mediahub) and 2 new MACs.
Both MACs have same problem, can't see windows network, but can attach to shares and can be browsed from PCs Network (Neighborhood).
MACs - Firewall off, Shares On (File, Screen, DVD), DHCP Leases from Server, WINS and DNS entries correct, Workgroup Membership correct)
    Me... STUMPED...

Is this helpful: Set Up Your Home Network, Windows 7 Edition - PC World? The following is for Leopard, but you may find it applies reasonably well to SL:
Simple guide to Leopard/Windows Home Networking
Written by Intercepter121 and originally posted on the Apple Discussions here.
If your network complies to the minimum requirements described below you should be able to share resources without any need to enter commands in the terminal to modify configuration files in your mac.
    Requirements
    1. A decent router
    2. Mac Os x 10.5.1 installed on your macs
    3. Windows XP or Vista
    4. Number of network devices <10
    5. Some network printers or drives (NAS)
    6. A decent ISP offering a good DNS service
    General Settings
If your router offers DHCP and any of the device has power saving features there is a risk that the IP addresses are renewed. This can be problematic as the devices keep changing IP addresses. As this is your network is strongly recommended to reserve IP addresses to the MAC (Machine Address Code) of the various devices so that they can power on and off and still keep the same IP.This simple suggestion will greatly improve the browsing of the local network.
Accessing Windows Resources from Leopard with no authentication
    Windows
    1. Check the settings of the PC and ensure the IP addresses on the local LAN are trusted
    2. Activate sharing on the desired devices ensuring the shares are read and write. If you use Vista ensure password protected sharing is disabled.
    3. Try to access the windows share from another windows computer if available to confirm no authentication is required
    MAC
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go back into system preferences network. On the tab location click edit locations. Duplicate Automatic and call the new location Home. Now select the Home location and go into Advanced-WINS. In the workgroup field enter the same value that is on the other windows computers for example HOME. Now press enter then go back to the main screen. Select Edit locations and delete the location automatic. Now edit your location Home and rename it Automatic. This workaround is a leopard bug described here.
    3. Give 5 minutes to allow all the other machines to broadcast their IP address and the other computers should appear on the left side of your finder window. You can now select the shares you want to connect. As no authentication is active if you are prompted with a user name just press OK.
The procedure to access a NAS is the same as above, just ensure permissions are set to files are read/write for anyone to avoid confusion.
NOTE: There is no need to activate SMB sharing if you don't want to allow the PC to read folders on your MAC
    Troubleshooting
After you have followed all the steps you don't see any windows PC.
Identify the IP address of the machine you want to connect. In finder select Option+K and enter SMB://IPADDRESS. If you can connect you have a name resolution problem. Go into your router configuration and ensure that the option DNS assigned by ISP is selected and you don't have services like Open DNS in use and fixed IP addresses in that field. Apply the changes and reboot the router. You should start seeing windows PC in finder shortly after.
Your ISP DNS service is poor and you must use Open DNS or similar
If you are forced to use services like open dns you have the risk that the router propagates the DNS servers to your machines. As the implementation of SAMBA in Leopard effectively blocks the MAC to be a master browser for performance reasons you end in a situation in which tiger machines connect and leopard ones don't see a single share. Let's fix it.
    1. Go into System Preferences->Network then advanced DNS if you see here the IP addresses of the open dns servers this is the case. Unfortunately you will be forced to change the hosts file.
2.Ensure you have reserved IP addresses to all your machines so that they always get the same IP.
    3. Now login into your mac as administrator and go into utilities=>terminal.
    4. Issue the following command sudo pico /etc/hosts
    5. Now scroll down and enter all the IP addresses and computer names of any device you want to browse
    6. Reboot your MAC
The windows devices will now appear in finder and you will be able to connect with Option+K.
You cannot access shares even entering the IP address
You have not reserved IP addresses to each machine. Go into your router LAN set up and make sure that is the case.
    Accessing Leopard resources from Windows
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go into System preferences->accounts and click on Guest flag the option Enable guest account to access shared folders
    3. Now into System preferences->sharing select file sharing and then options here flag SMB and select the user that has to be logged into the computer when the share has to be accessed. Ensure that the folder you want to share has read/write or whatever permissions you like it to have set for Everyone
You should now be able to see your MAC in the windows network resources and access the shared folder with a double click without any password request.
    Troubleshooting
You don't see any MACs from Windows
Check the firewall settings at the start of this post. Then go back to the Network configuration hit advanced and then TCPIP check is using DHCP and not a fixed address. Then check the sharing is set as above with SMB clicked. If SMB is not set you won't even see your mac from windows.
You see the MAC and the shared folders but you can't read or write on it
Ensure you have set the guest account to access shared folders. Then check on the sharing preferences that there is at least one folder with read permission for everyone. The classic case here is Dropbox that leopard sets as read and write for the user of the MAC but no access for other users. You try to click on drop box and receive an error but when you actually try to write a file you can do it. Check the permissions on the subfolders of the share as those permissions will prevail on the home shared folders
    FAQ
You may want to do more complicated things, but first ensure you can actually share files without security in place so you can identify the root cause of your possible problems
I want to password protect my windows shares: once you have done the relative set up in windows vista and ensured you can connect from another windows machine you will need to use user name and password of the Vista user to connect.
I want to password protect my MAC shared folders: Go into user account and disable guest access to shared folders is no shared folder has to be accessed without password otherwise leave it checked. Create a new user for sharing (better than giving away your password) so that this user only accesses the folders you want to share. In System preferences network select file sharing SMB and flag only the new user you have defined. Then go back to the folder section and set the permissions you like on the folder you want to share for this newly defined user.
    Good Luck
Last suggestion: Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "windows." There are numerous help articles. You can find the same articles at support.apple.com and searching for "windows network." Then narrow the product to Mac OS 10.6.

  • Remote control of Macpro using a windows based laptop

I travel regulalry and would like to be able to access and control my macpro at home to help my family resolve computing issues that they may face. I use a (sigh) HP windows OS(XP) machine when travelling. Whats the best way of being able to control my mac remotely under these circumstances?

    Hi,
Maybe you can take a look to the LogMeIn web service. The only think you need to do is creating a free account and install the software on your home macpro. After this, on your WinXP laptop, just open your LogMeIn account on a browser and that's it !

  • Original MacPro crashes during Windows XP Install

I have a MacPro rev 1.1 and am trying to install windows xp on a second drive with a 32Gb partition. I've run boot camp 3.02 ( I am using OX 10.6.3) and can see both HDs and the boot camp partition on the desktop. When I try to install windows xp I can hear the drive spin up but then the monitor goes from gray to black and the windows disk is ejected. And there it sits. To get back to Max OS I have to zap the pram then to get the monitor (original Apple flat panel) working I have to unplug the mac and restart. Any one got a work around to get Windows installed?

Then the problem is elsewhere, as that was fixed with SP1.
Or his disk doesn't even contain that level.
However, when pre-partitioned to NTFS even without SP1 should install.
I doubt the problem is his CDrom.
What he needs to do is get http://www.bootdisk.com/ntfs.htm
Run NTFS4DOS and do a checkdisk.
Yes that will solve his problem, as Windows (from 2000 to W7) are to stupid to do a checkdisk when the disk is in a certain state.
And even a Windows bootdisk can't solve it and crashed with the error he has.
Only Linux or NTFS-DOS can do a check disk and restore the error M$-NTFS makes it failing too boot or reinstall.

  • Living in a windows world

    Ok the skinny...
Mac guy, window environment. I have gotten all networked in can see everyone share files etc...
On my windbloz machine I have internet access we do have to go through a Webmarshal application I believe.
When I hook my macbook pro up as I mentioned everything but I can't get to the internet?!
Any thoughts. I don't want to pressure the IT dept too much for I working towards intergration with my mac. So you know the "Windows" folks very keep it tight to the vest.
    Help if you can...

WebMarshal is a monitoring proxy server. Apparently all of your company's internet access goes through it (and may be logged or blocked)
You need to either talk to your network admin, or go through ALL of the network settings on your PC and figure out the Mac equivalents.
If your company uses Active Directory you may be stuck unless IT is willing to help.

  • I'M coming from the terrible windows world and I feel concerned about sending emails with attachementes like " pages or numbers" to my contacts since most of them use windowds " Word or Excell". What should I do ?

In my new iPad2 I have no problem with my incoming mail because Ipad2 can read Windows attachements like "word or excell" . The problem I confront is if I want to send a message with an attachement from itunes apps like "pages or numbers" , Will my contacts (using most of them Windows based docs.) be able to open and read them? As I can not use any non Apple  docs for a new doc.,What can I do?Thanks in advance

Have you taken a look at iWork.com? It is a convenient place for sharing documents and the nice thing is the user you share the document with can download it as a word file. Formatting issues are a possibility with with text only docs that isn't so much an issue. Also consider QuickOffice or Docs2Go which are both Office compatible apps.

  • Podcast Producing in a Windows World

I'm running into some major issues at the school I work for trying to get Podcast Producer up and running. I've got an Apple Xserve with 10.5.1 that is a member of a Windows Active Directory Domain (No way for that to change).
My question really applies to pages 23-24 of the Podcast Producer Admin Guide. How can I make this thing work in an environment where Windows controls DNS, Active Directory and everything else?
Has anybody been able to integrate this into a Windows Server environment?

I skipped the entire DNS section but I registered our server with the networking group and they created the DNS entry for me. Worse case, you should be able to use IP's instead of names to communicate with the server.
As far as user accounts, I created them in both AD and on leopard server so that the info would match and everything was working smoothly. I do not know to which the clients were authenticating, I only assume it was leopard server.
Eventually I ran into the problem of ical server being unable to integrate with AD so I spoke with our AD folks and they said as long as I do NOT turn on DHCP and DNS then I can create an OD master and run with it, which is what I'm doing now.

  • Macs in a Windows world!

I am trying to help resolve a problem we are having with getting our Macs to access our Windows2003 server.
The main problem is that I am mac literate, but clueless about networking, and our IT chap is clueless about macs.
We have various drives that the macs need to access, and there are hidden files on those drives, which i am told on a PC is simply a case of typing in the files path, and then answering the security question.
We cannot access the drives from the macs, and have tried various methods, from using the go to server and go to folder options, I have tried to access the drive by clicking its icon in the shared section of the finder window sidebar. This opens the drive but doesn't help access the hidden files.
How do you define the path? we tried the method our IT chap uses on pc's but that didn't work.
i tried looking for the knowledge base regarding this but i can't find it anymore!
I have seen many posts describing using the Directory Utility, but again, i have no idea what to do with this app....
is there an idiots guide to connecting to windows networks anywhere?
    thanks
    Adam

    Several things:
1 under Windows Server, you need to have permission to share and permission to access (NOT the same thing...) the folder/files. There are separate requirements for 'sharing' a file/folder and for 'security' on that file/folder, and both must be set or you will have problems.
Example: if I have a Windows machine named BLACKPRINCE and a Mac named Henry V, and I want to share a folder named 'Transfers' on BLACKPRINCE, I must do the following:
At BLACKPRINCE I must create a user account and then must create the Transfers folder and then right-click it and select 'Properties'. This opens a dialog box with four panes: 'General', 'Sharing', 'Security', and 'Customize'. I must click on 'Sharing' and select 'Advanced Share'. I must select 'share this folder', set a share name, set the users, and set permissions using the user account specified earlier. I must then go to 'Security' and assign the proper level of control to that folder using the user account specified earlier. I can then log in over the network to BLACKPRINCE and access that folder, and only that folder, using the specified account. For best results the user account should be of the form user@'Henry V.local', as I'm accessing the folder from Henry V. Note the quotes, Windows doesn't like having two words in the account name, and you have to specify things by enclosing them in quotes.
Your IT guys must set up user accounts for you. They must also set up the network shares so that you have proper permissions. And then you should be able to log in without a problem... and you can park the share in the Dock so that you have automatic access.

  • Forced SafeSleep (Hibernate in windows world)

Dear all, I am new to Mac, and I have just invested on a MBP 2.0GHz with 2GB RAM, hoping this will replace my aged Windows based computer.
What I discovered with MBP is that there is no such things as hibernate, only sleep. As I only use the MBP during the night, and i would like it to sleep but without draining any battery at all. I understand that in sleep mode, MBP drains the battery slightly, but if i don't use it daily, then after a few days, the battery could have drained a lot ...
Can someone please help me with this problem ?
    Thanks

There's a much simpler way to activate Safe Sleep / Deep Sleep. It's a Dashboard widget call Deep Sleep that you can download from Apple's 3rd-party software distribution site:

  • Lost in Windows World

There are other questions similar to this, but not exact to my point. Just got a MacAir. Never used Windows. My daughter plays games on her PC and wants to use the MacAir to play games. Not going to install Vista, based on all the posts. I was told I needed to install Windows OEM SP2 kit. Went to newegg.com. Lots of different types:
    --XP Professional with SP2
    --XP Professional 64Bit SP2C - OEM
--XP Professional With SP2C - OEM
--XP Home With SP2B 1 Pack - OEM
--XP Home Edition with SP2 - Retail
HELP!!! I just want to make sure that what I install can run high end game programs for my daughter.
    Thanks!!
    Jon

should we get the Home edition or the Pro edition of Windows.
Consult with the game's publisher to see if they support, or work better on, one particular version.
Can we buy the OEM? Do I have to spend $200 or can we spend less?
OEM versions of Windows are licensed only for the system with which they ship. You need a full retail copy of Windows to run on a Mac, either via BootCamp (requires XP Home SP2 or XP Pro SP2) or via virtualization (virtualization is more flexible in the versions of Windows most such apps can run).
Just so you know, she's probably not going to be able to run "high end" " "high graphics" games successfully on your Mac; the graphics chip isn't suitable for really high-end games, i.e. those with very complex animations. The Sims, though, generally aren't particularly demanding on the graphic processor, so from a hardware standpoint, Sims games should work OK.
Note as well that any installation of Windows, be it via BootCamp or via virtualization, is going to eat up a lot of your MacBook Air's hard drive. So you may want to rethink letting your daughter load and run a lot of games on your system.
Just FYI, AB was trying to be helpful and giving you the advice many if not most people here would have, so your rudeness to him was rather uncalled for.

  • IWeb coming from a Windows world...?

I've recently switched over to MAC and trying to reduce the number of legacy Win32 apps that I need.
I've built and maintain a small site with NetObjects Fusion (Essentials). I'm looking at bringing the site over onto my MAC but my initial experience with iWeb(09) suggests to me that it's a very limited app by comparison to NOB.
Happy to rebuild the site from scratch but not prepared to do it a third time, so want to ensure I select a MAC application that I can stay with. What recommendations do folks have, what do most people use aside from iWeb?
Perhaps it's just me and digging deeper into the iWeb config etc?
    Appreciate folks suggestions, thank you.
    Regards, Ed

Well, about 11 years ago now I converted to Mac at the time when the Tangerine Mac's came out and have stayed with Mac ever since.
I had an old PC laptop that I still used from time to time and I built my first website on this using FrontPage. When iWeb came out I switched straight away and have never looked back. I built my company website using iWeb and it is so much more versatile than FrontPage ever was and for all the things that you can't do, there are workarounds - such as building your own navigation menu and you can still do hidden pages - I have a couple on my own site that work very well indeed.
Learn how it works and then give it a try. There have been others on this forum who have come to iWeb from using Dreamweaver and find it very good indeed.
