MacPro & Lion experiences same kernel_task problems as MBA

Hello -
Just wanted to post this in case someone else has a similar situation.
I have a MacPro with 3 graphics cards, 4 2T drives, 10G ram and 6 monitors. It is an older 2x4 machine without HyperThreading. I never had troubles with Leopard, occasionally did with Snow Leopard and was having some real difficulties with Lion. kernel_task would get out of control (CPU usage of 90-150%) Window Server did the same. It caused Safari, Finder and several other close-to-the-system processes to bog down to the point of unusability. Often to the point that the machine completely froze and I had to hard-power-cycle it.
I uninstalled Flash. I reinstalled the OS. I ran numerous virus/trojan checkers. I cleaned/optimized my drives (I had a huge amount of volume fragmentation, so I didn't have a large continuous blog for swap - this did help a bit). I changed out my primary drive and installed an SSD. I got great improvements, but eventually it always happened. Sometimes instantly after a reboot, sometimes days later.
After having read about many people with MBA having similar symptoms (and noticing that theirs was, predominantly, related to temperature) I installed smcFanControl and found that my machine was hovering at about 99(F) degrees. That doesn't seem too hot, but on the off chance that it was, I ramped up the minimum revolutions of the fans to about 2000 across the board and it cooled down to about 77(F) pretty quickly.
Since then, about 4 weeks ago, I've not had a single incident where I've needed to cycle it or having kernel_task get out of hand. I run Activity Montitor on one montor / all spaces all the time so I have a pretty strong set of symptoms that say I've got it handled. In retrospect, I THINK I can tie the heat issue to current processes - in other words, I think that as I was working the machine harder it would get slightly hotter and therefore, was more likely to exhibit the behavior.
Good luck,
/EP

I recommend holding off six months minimum.
Next, only do clean install of any new OS.
Some apps, drivers, etc need to be upgraded.
Lion may not know to disable or some and you may have a 'dirty' drivers, extensions, background stuff - but not trojan or something.
It is a workstation.
40*C is fine for disks and idle cpu - why not just say "Early 2008" so we know, that means you have FBDIMMs.
I can't see 3 x graphic cards. ATI 2600XT are terrible lately esp with Lion etc and 5770 will drive 3 monitors, that and GT120 should do better.
Safari 5.1 is only beginning to be multithread and still isn't up to snuff and behind the times.
EVERY Mac Pro should run SFC but just some profiles for low-med-high IF needed. Not 2k default.
Do a clean install on a newly initialized drive and then recheck Hardware Monitor readings.
And wait 6-9 months and keep 10.6.8 as primary OS.

  • Macbook Air kernel_task problem SOLVED (a least for me)

    Hi,
    Introduction:
I bought my MBA original (A1237) this January. Soon after the kernel_task problem arised - it consumed some 130% - 160% of CPU.
The problem did not occur when in Safe Mode. So I asembled a list of kexts that were running after normal boot but were not running in Safe Boot. I tried to remove them manually one-by-one .... with no result. The problem persisted.
Then I began to experience problems with the top case. First my powerbutton died, then the trackpad started to behave crazy and finally my keyboard refused to work as whole.
So I bought another A1237, with cracked LCD. I disassembled both computers (using ifixit.com guides - it is really not difficult!) and put my screen assembly (the whole piece with hinges etc.) to the new-bought computer. Unfortunately the logic board had EFI password on and the seller did not know it
I've been going crazy and as a last resort I removed the logic board and replaced it with my original logic board.
Well - now it works No kernel_task problem, the comp has been now running for 24 hrs and both cores are performing between 5 and 50%.
    WHY did it work?
    I don't know.
The top case problem probably had nothing to do with it. It just happened by the way.
Well, many users have reported this problem as a CPU temperature related.
The only thing I can imagine is that the thermal paste, that assures thermal conductivity between the cores and the heatsink was "worn", old, dried, cracked... This can happen when it is exposed to low temperatures. The cores overheat then. My system reported CPU temp between 30-50 Celsius, but I think that this is measured at the heatsink, not at the CPU directly.
Solution you may want to try:
Disassemble your Air to the point where you remove the heatsink. Remove the thermal paste from both the CPUs and the heatsink a replace it with a new layer. (My paste cost some $5.) Then put it all back together. Use guides at www.ifixit.com, there is guide for applying the thermal paste too. You will need just a tiny screwdriver.
I cannot tell for sure that this will work for you but I simply cannot imagine anything else, that could have solved the problem for me. Sometimes it is probably just disassemble-reassemble.
Unfortunately I have no clue why the kernel_task problem did not occur when in Safe Mode.
Well, that's all I know. I know a little but am happy to have it working in the end...

Seems to be related with AppleHDA Audio Codecs (old ones from OS10.8 work), that's why when you guys unplug the headphones the CPU level cames to normal levels. This problem is still not solved.
I've been chating with some Apple amployees about it and they say it's a Maverick's problem. I've said them that so many people is having this problem in Apple's official forums and they reccommend me to say you guys to open a "Feedback Bug Report" in Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
They told me that in the forums where you guys explain this issue, they don't read it them all, and the worst of all, apple enginyeers don't read them. So, i reccommend you to open a Bug Report in order to let them know about this problem and giving them enough information to solve it.
    Thanks

  • Since installing mountain lion i have a problem with mail. when i delete a message close  and open mail the message has come back. please help!

Since installing Mountain Lion i have a problem with Mail. I delete a number of messages from the same person but keep the newest message in my Inbox. I actually delete them from the Trash. The next time i open Mail the deleted messages are back again. Can anybody please help as this is getting annoying. Thanks in Anticipation.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

All settings are per Cox support information.

Please help with sorting out the issues with the Cox email services?   Sorry; I'm just not that powerful.
If you're set up per the published specs (and those aren't easy to find), then Cox (mail or doc or the Cox network) is probably broken.  What's posted at various of the Cox support sites indicates that the SMTP send path is either TCP 587 with SSL/TLS enabled or TCP port 465 with SSL/TLS enabled.  Cox does appear to use different SMTP mail servers, depending on your service class and your particular geographic location.  Cox also appears to use POP and not IMAP, and specifically uses POP3 Port 995 on pop.cox.net; that's the SSL/TLS port for POP3.
What to do?  Work with someone that you can share your credentials with, verify the error, and (if it can't be resolved) contact Cox and work through this error with them.
Or as an alternative, don't use Cox for your mail.  I deliberately chose a mail hosting provider, and not the ISP I work with, for mail services.  That mail hosting move was easily very affordable, and the mail provider quickly answers the (few) support tickets I've needed very promptly.   In other words, the ISP deals with the network wiring, and the mail hosting provider deals with the mail servers.  And mail works.
Or yes, you can use Google or another (free) mail provider, but - and with the providers of any of the free services in general - getting support when something goes weird is far from certain.

  • Photoshop cs6 won't allow me to highlight my existing text layers. Does anyone have experience with this problem?

Photoshop cs6 won't allow me to highlight my existing text layers. I select the text tool and the text layer I want to edit, hover over text and each time I attempto to edit a new layer is created. Does anyone have experience with this problem?

Be sure you go to Adobe's Web Site and make sure there are no Updates for CS6

Remember if you have trouble with a software issue it is the software and not caused by the Mac you are using
Many users simply don't remember when you upgrade software you normally have to go to 3rd party web sites and update software as well.

  • Is installing mountian lion the same as doing a clean install of an iOS

is installing mountain lion the same as doing a clean install of an ios?

Haven't a clue what an ios is, but reinstalling SL, Lion, or ML replaces all OS components and the basic Apple apps, such as TextEdit, Safari, Mail, and Terminal. What it doesn't do is touch any user data, settings, or other apps.

  • Will mountain lion have same limitations as lion?

Will mountian lion have same system limitations as lion? I have an intel duo core which prevents me fron upgrading to lion. Which requires a duo 2 core minimum.

As stated no one can answer for sure, but I can almost answer with 100% certainty that you will not be able to run ML if you can't run Lion.  It just doesn't make sense technically speaking.

  • Linkification (any version) does not work with FF9.0.1. Here we go again! Same old problem. Why don't you guys develop a permanent fix??!!! Don

Here we go again. Same old problem with FF updates. FF9.x.x will not allow clickable internet links. They are dead when typed. ALL IE versions have clickable links BUILT IN! Why can't you do it??? Don't blame it on "third party add on incompatiblity." It's not their fault. It is YOUR fault for not including it. Do not blame users either.
xpi files are not compatible with FF9.x.x even when dragged on to it

'''''Linkification''''' was not developed by Mozilla.
*The third party developer appears to have abandoned the Add-on (no longer updates it).
*The last update available on the Mozilla Firefox Add-ons site ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/linkification/ ) was made compatible only through Firefox 3.6.x
*The developer posted version 1.3.9 on his/her own site which was made compatible through Firefox 4
*'''''Read the comments section on the Add-ons page for suggestions.'''''
**I would NOT download from another site as you do not know what you might be getting.
**You can install the following and force compatibility in Add-ons > Extensions

**Under "Reviews", click "See all ###user reviews". The suggestion ''by marwn098 on November 11, 2011'' is the only one that I would recommend.

  • For CF Server 9 developer win 64bit has the same running problems like 32bit, or more

    CFWACK8 reader:
Better install CF Server stand alone - so no need  Apache? For CF Server 9 developer windows 64bit has the same running  problems like 32bit, or more?
I have installed  http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html ..WAMPP, well Mysql  may used by this CF Server 9 developer, although book use Apache Derby  embedded to cf server?
CFEclipse plugin may installed either in my (separate) Flash Builder 4 or Eclipse Helios, or only to latter?

CF 9 64-bit will generally be your best choice on a 64-bit platform, unless you specifically require something that's not available in 64-bit, like COM.
For development, the built-in web server is fine. But if you want to learn how to manage a web server, it's good to install Apache and configure CF to use that.
You may use any SQL engine for which there are JDBC drivers, including MySQL. Apache Derby is used for demos, etc, because it's bundled with CF. You don't want to use it for real projects, though.
You can install CF Builder in any modern Eclipse, including Helios or Flash Builder. This is largely a matter of personal preference. I've encountered some features that don't work properly unless you let CF Builder install its own bundled Eclipse, but these are features that I don't use much anyway.

  • I have completed my sap fico training, but i don't have any experience. I am an MBA finance having 6.6 years experience in accounts. Then can I get job in SAP field? & what type of course will do after MBA Finance? i want to do career in SAP Fico.

    Hi,
I have completed my sap fico training, but i don't have any experience. I am an MBA finance having 6.6 years experience in accounts. Then can I get job in SAP field? & what type of course will do after MBA Finance? i want to do career in SAP Fico.

    Hi Mahesh,
as you have more than 6 yrs. experience , you can opt for sap field but the main thing is that still if your job hunt will get ended, you will be considered as ab fresher, so are you ready for those bucks you will get after you will become a sap FI/CO consultant.
Please understand one thing , if you wnats to make your career in sap field, you are most welcome, when it comes to a job for you in SAP FI/CO , you have to consider in your brain only middle or small size industry, because as far as i concern no single major company will provide you exposure to work with them (if you will get, its your good fortune). So, if you have decided to take a step ahead in sap FI/CO i will not give you negative thinking, if you are ready to negotiate in your renumeration in starting your career, then you can take a foot ahead, but look a job in middle size or small companies only, i think through this you will get any exposure more easily.

    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== was happening with Internet Explorer, continues with Firefox

Did you do a malware check?
Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database.
