MacPro Monitors Go Black

Hi:
I've got six identical MacPros (late 2010 MacPro5,1) all 2x2.66 GHz 6-core Intels we use for retouching. All have Apple-installed ATI Radeon HD 5870s. All have the Eizo CG241W plugged into the DVI port on the graphics card and old 20-inch Cine monitors plugged in to one of the two empty mini-Display ports using an adapter.
Four are running Snow Leopard and are operating fine. We've started migrating up to Lion and I had 10.7.4 on two machines. Both were exhibiting the same problem — after working a while, both monitors would go black. The towers still are powered up, but the only way to get back to operation is holding down the power button to crash out and then restarting.
I upgraded one of the problem machines to Mountain Lion (10.8.2) figuring that maybe there was a Lion bug that got fixed, but the problem continues and seems to be coming more frequent.
I'm kind of stuck in a holding pattern. I don't want to risk upgrading any more of my machines, but I can't leave my main production boxes two or three versions behind the OS.
Anyone have any ideas? I've sent away to Apple for new Hardware Test discs (the latest I have is 3A183 and it seems to die doing the initial system check and never lets me hit the test button, so I'm assuming I've got the wrong disc for the wrong Mac).
Thanks.

Have these Macs actually crashed or have the screens just blacked out?
The caps lock key (and its indicator) are under software control.
Control+Eject should get you a shutdown dialog with the four buttons. Default is shutdown. Return key will shut it down, Escape will back out.
The Alt/Option key at startup invokes the Startup Manager. Its code is all in ROM. It draws a gray screen, then in slow motion shows an icon for each potentially-bootable Volume. The Eject key goes "live" at the end, and will open the drawer.
!0.7 and later installs the Recovery_HD, which can be used to invoke Disk Utility and ( Repair Disk ).

Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Hi, yes preferences sees there is a second display it recognises what make of monitor it is etc but I just get a blank blue screen on the monitor when I change it to the hdmi setting! I have tried with mirroring on and off, rearranging the displays in the preference window and lots of different resolution settings but with no difference.
An old MacBook connects fine so the monitor and hdmi port must be okay. I'm sure we have used the cable before but it could have been with the previous MacBook Air. The current one I'm using is a mid 2011 version running lion and is (according to software update) all up to date.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

I just bought a new external monitor (ASUS), and it have DVI and VGA plugs. I bought the DVI adapter to connect with my macbook pro laptop. But the external monitor remain black… so I turn it off then turn it back on, it said "No VGA signal". Does it means I have to use VGA adapter instead? I am not sure how it work, I am very new to it… I hope you can help me out!

    Hi Martin
First of all its interesting if you have downloaded and installed all Toshiba Vista drivers which are released on the Toshiba European driver page?
All drivers must be installed in the right order!
If I'm not mistaken the Qosmio G30-126 belongs to the PQG32E series. It was delivered with HD DVD drive and therefore you should choose the drivers for Qosmio G30 HD DVD (PQG32E)!!!
Please check firstly the Installation Instructions txt file and then install all drivers like mentioned in this document.
    Regarding the display issue;
You should install the right NVIDIA driver from the Toshiba page!!
The FN keys and control buttons dont work because the Toshiba Vista Value Added Package was not installed. This package contains different applications which are necessary to get all Toshiba functions running!
    Good luck

  • Satellite A100-646 and external monitor shows black screen

    Hello to everybody,
I have a similar problem with A100-646 (bought in Italy). Laptop's LCD and external monitor shows black screen but system boots without other problem. When laptop is not used for a long time (half a year) it work for one week without any problem.
Unfortunately, there is no proper service in a place where I live. Perhaps, there is a problem with power supply.
Is there other idea? Does anybody have a service manual? ([email protected])

It is not easy to find shop where you can order original and new hardware components.
Best source for such parts is definitely eBay where you can buy used but well working components.
Upgrade? You must know that upgrade on mobile computers is not the same as on desktops. Cooling possibilities are not the best and each notebook model has optimized cooling system for original parts. So new graphic card can be more powerful and produce more heat and it is definitely not good for your notebook. So best thing you can do is to replace it with original part.

  • I turn my iMac on and it starts ok but after a minute the monitor goes black

I turn my iMac on and it starts ok but after a minute the monitor goes black, sometimes it comes back on sometimes it stays off, this has only happened since Apple replaced the hard drive.

Then, contact the Apple repair station that did the work.

  • Mini ppc w/ beachball problem and attached monitor going black frequently

I am seriously considering replacing this mini. I believe as the poster yesterday concluded that the hard drive in this mini is on the verge of quitting. Reference beachball problem everytime any entry is made. I completely reformatted with zero overwrite and slowness was not cured. Drive is only about 30% of capacity. The attached monitor goes black (not to sleep) this will happen while data is being entered periodically many times a day. The monitor behaves perfectly when connected to another mini with same cables. I think there may be a video output problem. This unit is in a high demand area for making appointments, so I think it is time to replace although I don't want to because of software issues. I looked at external firewire comments, but so far I can't find the drives that will support being start up drives and the video out problem is still an issue. I have also thought of bringing my PPC iMac flat screen from home and upgrading at home, but it is 4-5 years old and I don't want to do this again in 6 months. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks

Have you run the Apple hardware test on it? Or if you have Applecare, the TechTools Deluxe test? To run the Apple hardware test, insert the first OS X disc that came with the system, which should say 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot, holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, click the arrow pointing to the right, and follow directions. Does it identify any issues?
If you click the blue Apple, and about this mac, does the memory show what it should be? If there were a memory issue with the RAM strip, where you were only getting reduced memory, that could contribute to the issues you're seeing.
A number of people with slowing systems, with frequent beach balls, have used OnyX to clean up their system, which has made a performance difference. You can get it from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html . Run the activities on the maintenance and cleaning tabs, which may require a reboot. Does that help?
One other thought, which is a stretch ... did you upgrade to 10.4.11 through the software update function or by installing the combo update? If by software update, you might want to download the combo version, and install it after you use OnyX. Repair permissions, install it, and repair permissions again, using Disk Utility. It's located at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html

  • My 27in LED monitor goes black, pops then comes back on

Brand new 27in LED monitor goes black, popping sound comes from speakers (I think) then comes back on. Plugged into my brand new Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz i7. Unplugged every thing and it still does it. Has most recent firmware. Just started after five days of ownership. Do I need to take it back to the Apple Store?

  • Laptop monitor stays black with Windows but not with Ibuntu

Can someone tell me why my daughter's Compaq laptop has no video, monitor is black, in Windows Vista but works fine with Ibuntu?  The service shop said it is a bad video card but wouldn't that apply to the computer and not work in either operating system.  I keep trying to repair it in Vista but this has me really puzzled.  If it works with one OS shouldn't it work with the other?

    Hello, @cliftram
I see that the screen is black on your daughters notebook. That you've installed another OS and it was working. I will try to help you with this.
The short answers to your questions, would you're right.
"wouldn't that apply to the computer and not work in either operating system" - Yes, if the issue was a faulty graphics's card neither OS would work.
"If it works with one OS shouldn't it work with the other?" -- same answer as above.
What this indicates, is there's an issue on the Windows side.
As i'm on sure where the black screen occurs, but try booting into Safe Mode. If you can do this, then something may be going on with the OS or driver.
If you got into safe mode, try a clean boot first. Restart and try starting up normally. If this works an application on the computer is causing the issue. If to doesn't try, using the HP Recovery Manager to restore all the drivers on the notebook. (if your model doesn't have this, pleas let me know).
If you cannot even boot into Safe Mode, the only option left (if you haven't tried it), is a System Recovery (for the Windows side). Make sure you back up prior to doing this.
Let me know what you're able to do.

  • Monitor stays black

Since I have bought my 17"PB I had, once a while, colored horizontal stripes all over the monitor. When using the mouse the stripes dissapeared. Two days ago this happened quite often, but still I worked and switched off my PB as usual.
Yesterday I tried to switch on my PB - but after a short moment of displaying (at startup), the monitor went black. I waited and closed the monitor to set it to sleep. After waking it up again, the monitor went for about 1 second to normal, but then black again. This is reproducable. The same reaction is also when only the monitor wents into standby mode and I wake it up again.
Now I have connected my PB to an external monitor to use it and to save all my data.
I noticed, that the monitor, when looking very closely, is displaying. But the brightness is by far not high enough to see the picture.
Also the apple logo at the back of the monitor is not switched on.
Does only a repair help, or is any other trick known?
Any "trick" is welcome, as I'm far away from any apple dealer!

Hey Michael, I totally feel your pain. I have been dealing with this annoyance for sometime. When it happens I usually close and open over and over, just hoping that it'll stay on. It usually never does. When my laptop goes on that downward cycle I just have to restart.
I have setup custom power settings so my computer never goes to sleep. I use this when I must have my computer stay on.
Other than that I have just been dealing with it. I know apple had a screen/driver update for the 17" a week ago, but it didn't seem to help 100%. My worst case of this annoyance actually came right after the update! But now two weeks after the update it seems to do alright.
ONE thing for certain though. If the battery is low, that is usually when it is the worst. When I am working I usually only get about an hour or two of battery time, so sometimes I forget to plug it in. This is when I have had the worst time trying to get my screen to come back on. So I would let it charge for a couple of minutes or so then come back to it. Then it would usually stay on.
I don't know if that has helped?

  • Monitor turns black

Hi why some times i getting this message driver display stop working and monitor turns black for couple seconds.
I already try to download a a driver but still the same so what can i do.thanks

    Hello cyborgT9000,
It's always a good idea to include what operating system you are using and the make and model of your computer. If you are using an added video card then knowing what video card you are using will also be helpful.

  • My monitor goes black at different times

My screen goes black at varies times. Someiimes when I cut my computer on, the screen is black. Then other times it goes black after i have been on for a while. I know something is going bad but what?

, Hello and thanks for posting on the HP support forums.  First question is.  Have you tried the monitor on another system or plugged it into a notebook to see if you have the same issue.  Normally if your monitor goes black when plugged into your computer and it is the problem with the computer.  You will get a no signal message come up on the screen. If at all possible please post back with your full Model and Product number so I can pull the specs on the system and see what options it came with and find out the best way to search out what the problem may be. Here is a link to help you with this. HP Desktop PCs - How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? Here is another link that may be of help until you post back. HP and Compaq All-in-One and HP TouchSmart Desktop PCs - Screen is Blank after Starting the Computer Please let me know how things go and post back when you get a chance. Thanks again for the post and have a great day.

  • Does anyone know how to stop my monitor from blacking out?

I am getting annoyed that my monitor keeps blacking out on IDLE!  Ahh!  It does not sleep or power off, I suppose.  Just goes black and then comes back alive on a mouse move.  This is a desktop.
Here is what I have set off:
Power Management Preferencess in System Menu = Sleep is set to NEVER
    in gconf-editor for gnome-power-manager:
    ac_dpms_sleep_method:    off
    ac_sleep_display: 0

haha.  how do i stop this damn blacking out?!?!?    Thanks.
(i was able to disable it in Ubuntu with similar steps, although I only think it 'slept' on that distro.  Not blacked out)
