MacPro n card in MBP weak signal...this a possible cause?

After adding a MacPro card to my MBP CD I was surprised to see a weak signal when using an n enabled network (AEBSn). I was also surprised to see that g performance and signal strength was weaker also.
I know I wasn't alone in wondering why, but I think I may have found out the cause. Everyone knows that the C2D MB and MBP uses a 3 antenna array on a Atheros chip...however, the MacPro, AppleTV and probably the iMac all use a 2 antenna connection Broadcom card. Why only 2 antenna? Well, I think (from what I have read) that the 2 antenna leads are actually coaxial cables with a antenna within a antenna...what I think is called a 2x2 antenna array, allowing for MIMO and the high n rated speeds.
Thoughts? This has been bugging me since I installed the card and I just could not understand why I would lose so much signal and gain so much noise. Curious to see what everyone else thinks.

Same.. ish..
had a DG834G.. all fine..
gave it to inlaws..
got a DG834N
Apple genius said coz the imacG5 is G connected all is G.. fair enough kinda guessed that.
So hard wired the G5.
MBP still drop to 2 bars then hangs.. never had this with G.
AppleTV is further away and is 4bars fine.
Put MBP where imac is.. 3 bars.. itunes 720p footage stutters where same clip on iMac running atG would stream fine.
Think the MBP wireless is pretty pants, fine for surfing..
What i didnt know, as speed of wireless gets faster.. ie file transfer.. range drops.. so I get hangs on file transfers.
Gonna drop the router back to G in the morning see if that sorts it.

  • Weak signal reception from my new Airport Express card.

I had an Airport Express card installed in my spanking new G5 dual-core at the Apple store. I have a feeling it was installed incorrectly.
My Dell laptop (next to my Mac) picks up my Airport Express transmission just fine and shows the signal as very strong. My mac, however, shows a weak signal that will often fade away to nothing every hour or so. I've found that if I shake the tower, the signal will come back. I've moved the tower about the room, but with the same results.
I opened up the tower and the card appears to be installed correctly. I see the two antennae wires hooked up and and the card is in place.
Has anyone else had this type of problem?

ratsurfer, Welcome to the discussion area!I had an Airport Express card installed...You mean AirPort Extreme card. The AirPort Express is a router.
Do you have the external antenna connected to the back of the Power Mac G5? Read PowerMac G5 wireless problem? Check this... and check the included links.

  • How to force Airport to join an AP with weaker signal?

I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to get the Airport card in my MBP to join an access point, with the same SSID as another access point, but that has a weaker signal?
Say there's 2 access points (A and B) and they both have the same SSID (eg. Wayport_Access). A is on channel 11 and B is on channel 1. A has the stronger signal. By default, and normally, you would want the airport card to associate with the access point with the best signal, A in this case. However, I'm in the situation that A is not functioning properly. So I want to join, B, even though it's farther away.
I've tried using iStumbler to force a join with the B access point on channel 1, but nothing happens. I stay on A as long as it's the stronger signal. If I move such that I get to a place where B is the stronger signal I can then get iStumbler to get the Airport card to associate with B on channel 1. If I then move back to my original location where A is the stronger signal I do stay associated with B, which is good. However, due to hotel positioning and such, it's not always convenient or even physically possible to move to a position where the B signal is stronger.
I thought I remembered an advanced setting somewhere that would allow me to set something about stronger/weaker signal setting but I cannot find it in Sys Prefs.
    Any ideas?

do you have the air port icon displayed in your top menu bar - if not add it in the system preferences ==> network ==> airport?
    Yes.
Click on it and click join other network then sow networks and click on the one you want to force to - that should do it
Not if both Access Points have the SAME SSID, there's the catch. There's no mechanism through the Airport Menu or System Pref to join a different access point with the SAME SSID. That's why I was using iStumbler, because it will show ALL available access points, even the ones with the same SSID, based on which channel they are on. I want to associate with the access point that has the weaker signal, but has the same SSID as the access point that I'm already associated with. If IIRC there used to be an advanced setting about signal strength, but I can't find it anymore.

  • Will there ever be an update to fix the weak signal?

Hello! I am one of those galaxy nexus owners who absolutely love the phone but HATE the weak signal...
When I am in an open area, I seem to get pretty good reception on my phone, but everything changes when I go inside a building! I get HORRIBLE reception inside buildings (like my house and work), which causes my phone to slightly heat up and drain battery very quickly. I am tired of having to turn on airplane mode in these situations to conserve battery! I can confidently say that it is the phone, not the area, that causes the weak signal because my friends who have Verizon iPhones get 2-3 bars of 3G when I have ZERO bars...
I have tried almost everything to improve signal (restart phone, take out battery and sim card, allow CDMA only, etc.) , and nothing seems to have worked!!! My sister, who also has a galaxy nexus, has the same problems as I do, so I doubt a replacement phone/sim card would be any help.
Does anyone know if Verizon/Google/Samsung will be releasing an update to improve signal for this phone?

I'm having these problems as well.  I keep thinking the next software update will fix it, but it hasn't.  At least not fully.  I was with my wife on a road trip over Thanksgiving weekend and took some comparison screenshots of both phones.  As you'll see in these screenshots, the Galaxy Nexus barely has a bar of 3G, while the iPhone boast full strength.  Yes, I know that bars are only a visual representation, but it's hard to get DBM information on the iPhone.  I can tell you the Galaxy Nexus couldn't even load a mobile friendly web-site, while the iPhone did. Here I avoided the iPhone 4S because of "signal issues".  A lot of good that did me.  Thoughts Verizon?  Replacement SIM cards don't fix the issue.

  • E1200 - Had a weak signal and slow speed

Pros: Price, nice sleek shiny box, kind of worked when new. Good as a paperweight in a light breeze.
Cons: Not really a good doorstop - too light. Died at 35 days of ownership. Won't let me in to the web interface to make some changes. When working it had a weak signal and slow speed. Doesn't support access point mode like my old wireless router did.
Other Thoughts: Not the first time I'm had problems with Linksys/Cisco branded products but this is the last product I'll ever buy with the Linksys/Cisco name on it. Fact is ever since Cisco bought out Linksys, every product I've bought from them had failed/died within a few months. You'd think they would get this right by now but they haven't.

There are many reasons why you experience poor signal or connection. Well, there are few things you should keep in mind with regards to N routers:
    1) For the best possible speeds, you need to be using WPA2-AES as your security mode. Any other security mode will see your speed/range capped.
    2) Make sure the drivers for the Wireless Card for the computers should be updated as well..
    3) The router by default uses a channel setting of auto, which means that it would keep switching channels depending on the interference. I’d recommend you set it to a fixed channel. Usually, 1, 3, 6 and 9 give you the best performance depending on your environment of course. I’d suggest you try different channels, observing each for a while, to see which gives you the best performance. You can follow the link here on how to change channels.
Second, all Linksys/Cisco can work as an Access Point. There are two (2) ways to cascade a Linksys router to another router:
    1. LAN to LAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the Linksys router (router A) to one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of another router (router B).
This type of cascading requires the main and the secondary router to be on the same LAN IP segment to allow the computers and other devices to connect to both routers.  This configuration is recommended if you want to share files and resources within the network.
    2. LAN to WAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of router A to the Internet port (WAN port) of router B.
This type of cascading requires the main router and the secondary router to have different IP addresses.  This connection makes it easier to identify which router the computers and other devices in the network are connected to since they will have different LAN IP segments.  However, computers that are connected to router A will not be able to communicate with router B, and vice versa since they are two different networks.

  • Could weak signal be a computer specific problem?

I've read all of the other "weak signal" posts, and they all seem to be caused by an interference/distance issue. My problem seems to be particular to my iBook, as my roommate's iBook gets full signal anywhere in the same room as the express and at least half signal from across the house. Mine only gets full signal on top of the airport, half signal from across the room, and NO signal from anywhere else in the house. Also, this is true not just with our network at home; any other wireless signal comes in at half strength as compared to his on our "internet connect" meters. Wasn't until I had side by side comparison that I could confirm my personal shortcomings, but I had suspected for a while (wireless distance limit of 10 feet sure feels like the tug of a wire). I installed the airport card myself, while his came ready to go....did I screw up? Any ideas at all?

You may have your answer and I am going to throw out some info. I was having a lot of interference problems and Apple stepped up and helped out. First, and 2.6Ghz wireless phone will interefere with your network. Second, The airport has to have a clean line of site with the airport wireless card. Apple said they are finding the signal is having a bit of trouble going through metal, past microwave ovens etc. I have a G5 under a desk trying to get past a 30" cine display. I had to do some fancy work-arounds. Also turn on "interference robustness". It will slow your transfer rate down a bit, but it has kept me networked with little frustration.

  • Weak signal = options?

In my ordinary 5 bed brick and timber house I have my broadband arriving at the upstairs room I use as an office, which is diagonally opposite the downstairs kitchen.
My Airport Extreme signal will reach the kitchen showing 2 bars on my MBP - weak, but there. So I put an Airport Express in the kitchen to extend the network.
I now get full bars in the kitchen, but it's very slow and somewhat flaky.
    I am wondering two things:
    1. Are Extremes directional - should I wall mount it or even have it upside down as it's on an upper floor?
    2. Could I use a powerline extender from the Extreme and connect an Express into a powerline receiver to transmit in the kitchen (assuming of course they are on the same mains circuit)?
Re the image, I have experimented by putting two identical, latest model Expresses side by side in the kitchen and the Extreme's "Wireless Clients" shows them as below, they are the yellow and green items (both are set to Extend the network even though only one shows it, I have double-checked)
    Thanks.

A number of users make the mistake of positioning an "extending" device too far away from the main base station. Of course, everything is a compromise, but in general...
You want the Express as close to the main base station as possible...for good signal strength pickup
You want the Express close to the remote area that needs more coverage...so devices get a good signal.
What to do? Assuming no major obstructions in the signal path between your main router and the kitchen, try positioning the Express at a point that is about 1/2 to maybe 2/3 the distance between these areas. That will give you the best compromise assuming no major obstructions.
    1. Are Extremes directional - should I wall mount it or even have it upside down as it's on an upper floor?
If you have the Extreme on the top of a desk, the signal radiates generally upward in an expanding spherical pattern...like an expanding bubble from the device. So, you would pick up a few percentage points of signal strength by positioning the device on a wall or ceiling with the Apple logo facing the general direction that you want to signal to move toward. I've tried both and notice virtually no difference in signal strength a floor below, but your results may vary.
    2. Could I use a powerline extender from the Extreme and connect an Express into a powerline receiver to transmit in the kitchen (assuming of course they are on the same mains circuit)?
In general, this is a much better way to "extend" because there is much less loss of signal between the main and remote device. If wireless only won't work well, this is what you should try. Post back for more details on how to set up the Express (you would not configure it to "extend"...as you might think).

  • Weak Signal or No Service after upgrading  firmware 1.1.2

I live in Los Angeles, Hollywood area, and for the past 2 months have had nothing but headaches with weak signal strength, no signal, dropped calls and slow data service. Sometimes the phone will have 5 bars then go down to zero bars or no signal without even moving! I think it must be the iphone/at&t service/software, since my friends on standard phones with AT&T seem to not have these issues.. I have seen on other message boards that other iPhone users around the country are experiencing similar issues...
No one seems to answer my question, "Could this problem be related to the Edge/3G combination have anything to do with this problem? The first 5 months of using the Iphone, I only noticed slight weak signal problems, generally related to having the wifi radio on. But this problem is occurring with wifi off. I have Reset the Phone, restored the phone, re-seated the SIM card, check to ensure SIM show no physical damage, all to no avail. You folks need to give me some real answers, and not just the standard we don't know. Now I must add there are some places like 6700 Hollywood Bl. where the signal is great both Voice and Data, but a 1700 N. Las Palmas the signal drops off to one bar, and at 1737 N. Las Palmas Av. it goes to No Service. Please help Please help!

You folks need to give me some real answers, and not just the standard we don't know.
Firstly, "we" folks here are iPhone users, just like yourself, not Apple employees (though there are a few who sometimes post here of their own volition, and not because they have to). So your problem will be answered or advised on depending on our own experiences with the iPhone. To that point, I am in the UK, and am one of those people who have suffered from exactly the same problem as you: my iPhone gets very poor reception in areas where other 02 (UK network) phones get near perfect reception. There is a rather long thread on this topic, and another similar one which was started when the original was locked by the mods. I'm afraid that after much troubleshooting, we are still no closer to finding the source of the problem. What seems pretty clear is that the iPhone antenna probably isn't as sensitive as those of other phones. Also, it's on the bottom of the phone, so can be covered with your hand causing a drop in signal strength. It may also be that in an attempt to conserve battery life, the iPhone doesn't boost the signal as much as it should. But there are all speculations at the moment.
You best best is to communicate your feedback directly to Apple at:

  • Six Spare Monitors...MacPro Video Card Advice?

    Greetings,
I have six spare monitors (Dell 19" 4ea and Dell 24" 2ea) leftover from a PC and I would like to get some advice on MacPro video cards to conncect all six monitors to a single machine.  When I had my PC, I purchased a single eVGA 9500 (two DVI video ports built-in) and two eVGA PCI cards (2 video ports each for four ports).  Once installed, these cards worked flawlessly with the six monitors under Windows Vista and the Aero interface.  The 9500 was $99.00 and the PCI video cards were around $50 each.
I currently have a late 2009 iMac i7 with an external display, but I find having two screens is somewhat limiting since I had six with my PC.  I've enabled Spaces in Snow Leopard, but all the screen flipping gets on my nerves.  I miss being able to dedicate a monitor to email, another to iTunes, another to the Calendar, another for web browsing, etc.
Unlike Wintel PCs, the selection of video cards seems to be limited and specialized for MacPros.
How would someone go about adding video cards to a MacPro to drive six monitors?
I've read that the older MacPro video cards aren't very good.  My late 2009 iMac i7 has a Radeon 4850, and I've never had a single problem with it, so I would probably want something similar in my MacPro if that is possible.
I'm considering buying a used MacPro off eBay in the $1,000 to $1,500 price range.  I'm planning on using the machine the same way I'm using my iMac today which consists of basic photo editing with iPhoto & Aperture and light video editing with iMovie.
    Thank you,
    Derrick

yes, the choice in cards is limited.
some PC cards can be flashed, but with no garantees.
    then there is USB, where you can add up to 4 monitors;

  • Io/26 and weak signals

I recently purchased an io/26 (using current drivers) and have been experiencing some pretty weak signals into GB, mostly when I'm using a mic (an EV 767) to record guitars and vocals. I believe I've got things set up correctly, but I'd like to be wrong...
I usually have to get the mic right up to the speaker or sing extremely close to the mic. The mic uses the xlr input on channel 1 or 2, with the switch on the mic/line setting as opposed to the guitar setting; phantom power is off. With these settings, I have to turn the gain up to about 80% to get a decent signal into GB. The driver software is pretty simple and doesn't allow me to adjust input levels. There is some "HDM" software (hardware direct monitoring) but I'm assuming this only affects sound routed back to the io for monitor speakers or headphones.
I'm hoping I'm just doing something stupid. I realize the ev767 is a vocal mic, but it should be a decent multi-purpose mic for my needs. One thing I am not able to do because the input is so weak is to place a mic far enough away from an amp (or a person) to get the sound of a room. Frustrating.
While I've been searching other threads here for similar issues, nothing seems directly relevant. Mostly, this is because the io/26 disables most of the software input settings that is a solution for usb mics, usb/midi input, etc.
Has anyone else come across this problem?
    Thanks,

  • Weak signal fail with 3.1

Anybody else notice a loss of weak signal pull in? On 9/1/09 it seems a new tower turned on and I suddenly had a couple of bars at my remote mountain house that I'd never had before, the signal stayed strong roaming around in my remote area very much better than before. then I updated and blammo no more signal, zilcho, nothing bummer.
anybody else notice anything like this? IPhone 3GS 32gb Anybody have any suggestions, similar experience?

    bktonyc,
I noticed that my phone occasionally "freezes" during phone conversations (2 out of 5!) which requires the complete power-down of the phone. This never occurred under 3.0.1 firmware. I'm holding my breath to see what I'll discover next!
Apple, please give us some way to reload 3.0.1 firmware!!! I don't give a rat's behind about the new & improves MMS or other features that were supposedly rolled into this newest version of the FW. I can't even use this iPhone as a reliable telephone!!!
For what it's worth, I also notice that occasionally the signal strength decreases to near zero, and I can't access the internet or even place calls. This is when I know I'm in close proximity to a cell tower (I know, because my wife's phone has full signal strength). I wonder if this is somehow related to the rapid battery discharge, as the phone may be "hunting" for a signal (endlessly transmitting, and looking for a response from the cell tower).

  • Airport does not want to connect to a weaker signal

my airport has decided that it does not want to connect to a weaker signal. at home if i am next to the wireless source my computer connects just fine, but if i go downstairs to my room the signal strength starts dropping and then will disconnect all together and i am unable to connect again. the signal strength is strong enough to connect because my computer connected just fine before and i tried it with my brothers computer (he has a 15in macbook pro) and it connects just fine. any suggestions? thanks
    =)-SamIam-(=

yes everything connects to the same wireless internet. i did notice i had a harder time connecting around the time i upgraded to 10.5.6. (i cant remember for sure)
i don't think it matters but i am not connecting to a AP base station at home. We use our iMac for our wireless internet. but even if i am not at home i cant connect to any wireless signal while others around me are connecting to a free service in town. (i used to be able to connect to the same service in town to which i can not anymore)
i did notice that when i open my MBP and wake it form sleep i am able to connect for a couple of min, then the signal gets weaker and weaker until it disconnects and i am not able to connect again.
    thanks

  • Airport Express has very weak signal even to the next room

I am wondering why my airport express has a weak signal. The signal to the next room(about 4 or 5 meters away), is so weak that you can only see one or 2 lines from the graphic at the internet connect. My base station has the last firmware from apple. Has anybody else experiencing this problem or knows what could be wrong?
    Mac mini G4 1.25, iMac G5 2.0, MacBook 2.0, iPod 20Gb, iPod nano 4Gb, iPod 30Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have tried changing channels, I have tried using interference robustness but nothing seems to work. Isn't it so wierd thought that in the same room within 1 meter distance, the signal becomes from strong to weak, to zero?? The funny part also is that when i change channel for a few seconds the signal is very strong until it drops to zero. When i try another wireless device doesn't seem to have this problem but only with airport express base.

  • Airport Extreme + MBP = No Signal

    Hello All,
I've installed a AP Extreme ( fast ethernet ) in my front room, I'm using a new 2.2 Mac Book Pro, I can get full AP signal within about 30 feet, then as i walk to the other end of the house ( a distance of about 70 feet ). The signal drops conpletely, This seems strange, since i have a G5 2.0 DP machine further away behind a brick wall, and it still recives a weak signal ??????. I know about the random dropouts with these routers, but i thought i fixed those with a reset of the base station.
    Seems to be very strange
    Any help would be great
    Thanks
    DMac

Then it is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that has been introduced recently in the immediate area that is preventing your computers from getting a good clean signal from the base station.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like MacStumbler or iStumbler to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • How to control two 6011e daq card to acquire eight signals simultaneously.

I use two 6011e daq card to acquire eight signals simultaneously .I use labview function to realize it,but the data graph show that the signals aren't acquired simultaneously, why?how to do it?

    Hello;
You need to use the RTSI bus to route one board's clock signal to be the second board's clock signal. By doing that, you will have the same signal clock timing both boards, which will make the synchronization hardware timed.
You will need to have a RTSI cable connecting both boards together also.
The best way to go about this is to open the Labview examples that show how to synchronize multiple devices. You can apply the same idea to your board.
The examples can be found at Search Examples->I/O Interfaces->Data Acquisition->Multiple Device DAQ Examples.
    Hope this helps.
