MacPro Quad 2.66 OSX 10.4.10 + 10.5 + XP

Is this a possibility and any sort of conflicts with running this set up?
I currently have a Quad MacPro 2.66 with OEM 500gb drive + my 500gb XP drive and im going to be purchasing a 150GB Raptor for Leopard OS/Programs only.
I wanted to know if i have it in drive bay 3 and leave my other OS drives in the system will i be okay to boot from any of the three or are there currently known issues with this?
Drive bay 1: 500gb OS X 10.4.10
Drive Bay 2: 500gb XP Pro Sp2
Drive Bay 3: 150GB Raptor ~ Leopard 10.5
any thoughts or suggestions, i like using my tiger OS for applications that run smooth under rosetta and not 100% sure about the Leopard being compatible with alot of my applications as of yet.
and do not currently have an external case for sata drives so im just going to use all the internal slots for sata drives and OS and the external drives for backups and filestorage.
thanks!!

There are some nice specials today:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com from site sponsor OWC.
Two old sayings, "better safe than sorry" and "stitch in time, saves nine" so along with backups, it is so easy to pull and insert disk drives (powered down, and 15 minutes to allow FBDIMMs to cool) makes the drive sleds easy to work for. I have two extra sleds (6) for drives that I use infrequently.
Also, 10.5.0 had a few problems mounting, seeing disk drives. However, Leopard really has better support for multi-core systems and the Finder has a lot of potential in it.
I think Leopard should have a nice feel, once it matures and more apps are ready. Developers often have to wait until it is out before they begin any real work testing and evaluating, and then do what upgrades they need to.

  • Performance upgrade for Lightroom and Photoshop on a MacPro Quad Xeon

I have a MacPro Quad Xeon 2.26(on OSX 10.5.8) with an internal 1tb RAID 0 for a PS scratch. It has 8gb of RAM and I run my apps off the main (boot) drive. My LR cache resides on this boot drive as well. I have dual ACD 23's each running off a GeForce GT 120.
I'm looking for opinions and options to make my life faster.
    1. upgrade to 10.6?
    2. RAM up to 16gb?
    3. OWC Mercury Pro SSD 115gb for my boot and a second for my user files?
I have been reading Diglloyd's stuff but I'm looking for other opinions on cheap speed.
    thanks in advance

Have you ever cracked open activity monitor? Unless your CPU's regularly peak out, they aren't your weak link.
Congratulations - they are also the most expensive to replace since you basically have to buy a new computer! I'd start with the hard drives - absolutely the slowest link in any modern computer. Start off with an SSD for the system/Applications. Then try moving files you are working on to the SSD to see if that makes a difference as well. I don't know about LightRoom, but with Aperture, once the database files in the Aperture library fragment it's performance drops off dramatically. Changing my Aperture library to be on an SSD and referencing my masters on my internal RAID made a dramatic difference. It feels like I have a new computer!
If you have lots of scratch activity you could be low on memory. Or you could be dealing with photoshop wonkiness like this:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshopCS5-Warmup.html
Throwing hardware at software coding errors like the above won't get you anywhere.
Start with activity monitor. If you aren't routinely maxing out your CPU's focus on disk drives and then memory.

  • Power supply not strong anough on macpro quad

We are running 5 macpro quad 5gb ram, 3Hardisk and Protools HD3 PCIe cart, whem we put a 4th HD the problem starts; bad running, bad startup. on one of them we change twice the mother board on warranty(oups). Did anybody have the same kind of problems.
We suspect that the power supply is not strong anough.
    Regards
    Djoum

The reason it won't turn on is because pins 21 and 23 are not in the standard ATX PSU configuration. Your motherboard works with an HP configured ground on pin 21 and +12 VDC instead of the ATX  (ATX12V v2.01)standard unused pin and +5VDC respectively.
    Z400 PSU connector
    Standard ATX PSU connector
I have not seen a non HP PSU available that would work without modification.
Not all HP's are built with propietary PSU connections most newer, non-business models use the standard ATX PSU configuration.

  • Incompatibility MacPro Quad-Core 2010 and AirPort Extreme for DHCP

    Hello,
I have a MacPro 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xenon 2010 EFI 1.5, for my internet, I use an AirPort Extreme Base Station version 7.4.2.
When I try to access the internet settings of the AirPort Extreme in the DHCP, the first DHCP address does not select anything in the dropdown menu.
    Here is a picture screen:
    http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/4995/airportdhcp.jpg
I tried with a second MacPro Quad-core 2.8 Ghz and the error persists. By cons, with a MacBook Pro 3,1 or IMac 4.1, normally I go to the menu in question.
For it is impossible to modify the airport extreme settings with an error message that afirm the first IP address is invalid.
Unable to select because the menu is empty.
I really think a bug MacPro?
    Someone does have this problem?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Pointer jumps all over the screen erratically on new MacPro Quad Core

I just powered up my new MacPro Quad Core Xeon for the first time today. For the monitor, my new Viewsonic VG2230. I noticed that my new mighty mouse was skipping all over the screen and it was hard to get the pointer on the place on the screen I wanted to click. It got much worse when I added the second monitor (Viewsonic VA1912), and didn't want to move across from one screen to another at first.
I thought maybe it was the mouse, and put on my old Razor Pro mouse, which I know and love. Same problems. I switch USB ports still the same.
According to Viewsonic, both monitors are compatible, and I have used the VA1912 successfully on my old PowerMac. I thought it was odd that the number of screens affected the problem, which is why I am concentrating on the monitors, but I wonder if it isn't a problem with my Mac.
    Any ideas?

    Hello g:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I suspect a faulty mouse. However, try two things first. Trash a preference file (com.apple.bluetooth.plist) and restart. Reset the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Second, after assuring Apple this really was a problem, i got the ultimate insult. "If you would like to lodge a technical support ticket, we will need your credit card. This call will cost you $150.00."
You see, I bought this thing four months ago. Apparently you only get a 90 day free call period. After that you're warranty is actually a cost per call scenario…..
There is no Apple charge for a warranty issue and the mouse has a one year warranty. Call Applecare back (or take it to a store if they have one close to you). Unless I am badly mistaken, Apple will replace the mouse and pay for shipping both ways (I had one fail a couple of years ago myself). Do identify the call as a warranty issue.

  • MacPro Quad Core 32g Ram running slow Logic using only 9g in Activity Monitor

Well its taken a while, but this is my first foray into the world of forums! I'm so hacked off with this regular problem and havent been able to find anything anywhere to solve it i thought i'd see if anyone has any similiar issues and maybe even a solve to it.
So.... im an orchestrator and producer and after my mid 2008 Macbook Pro with 8g ram started freezing up i invested in this 3 years ago -
Mac Pro 2x 2.4ghz Quad Core intel Xeon and stuck in 32gb of lovely Crucial RAM and 3 seperate internal 1TB drives with one for operating system (10.6.8), one for Audio recording/saving and one for all my sample libraries.
32gb ram - should be enough i thought!
So i regularly run at least 30 VI's - Ni The giant, Spitfire Orchestral librabies (say 12 string instruments up to 0.69g per load) LASS strings, plus perc STYLUS, ABBEY road drums, Trillian basses (acoustic/electric), ominisphere etc etc. So pretty hefty sample instruments. But theyre sooo nice!!
In addition, the 32 bit server will come alive (NOT! So unstable i find) with my Waves plugs etc.
Looking at ACTIVITY MONITOR however i might be not touching 9 gig (and sometimes even less) of usage for Logic, and only say 800MB for 32 bit server and have NOTHING else open - and what do i find .....
    - Mouse lag and cant really do anything with the mouse whilst playing the track - cant adjust volume - too slow, zooming problems
    - Takes a good 2-3 seconds for track to stop playing
Dont get System OVERLOADS so much, its just that the system goes REALLLLLY slow.
    What ive tried- - -
    - Running Mountain Lion off another drive (havent had time to install it and wanted to be sure everything worked etc)
    - Tried all audio prefs - large/small buffers/threads etc and yes i am on 1024.
in a nutshell how come with 32g RAM everything is so slow when barely using 10g of that???????
I dread getting to the end of a project cos i know im gonna be freezing so much, but with so much editing all the time for the orchestral parts i need everything unfrozen and working.
Sorry if this is long winded but wanted to describe what im experiencing.
Any feedback most welcome! Thankyou in advance.

    Hi
    A few thoughts:

The 32bit server is a pita: Waves v9 are 64bit  compatible (they run fine). 32 bit VI's can be run outside Logic using Vienna Ensemble Pro (see later)

Some of these VI's are extremely CPU hungry: Abbey Rd drums for example, really do hammer the CPU. What does Logic's Performance meter show in the way of CPU load. What does Activity Monitor show regarding CPU load?
With 32G of RAM, this should not be the issue, but you might have general CPU problems (see above), and you may also have Sample disk streaming limitations if all the Loibraries you mention are on the same drive. How does Activity Monitor look regarding disk access? You might find it helpful to add a second drive and split the sample libraries across 2 for faster disk access.
I presume that you have plenty of free space on the System drive?
Logic can get sluggish if the Undo info gets way too big, and also if there are loads of regions in the Arrange: check Options:Project Information.
Many are finding some benefits (me included) by running the VI's in Vienna Ensemble Pro:
Better CPU load distribution than directly in Logic
"Persistant Samples": they can remain loaded whilst you switch Logic Projects
Logic is effectively running much less itself, so generally flies.
32bit Plugs hosted separately in VEP so no 32bit Bridge issues in Logic
Something to consider, though perhaps not yet, would be setting up a Slave computer using VEP.

  • From G5 to MacPro Quad 2.66 -- Do I need to re-install iWork?

My G5 finally had to be replaced by a new MacPro. I was in a pinch so I migrated everything over, including my programs.
Is there any reason to uninstall iWork and iLife to reinstall? Is the version on the G5 the same that would run on an Intel processor?
    Thanks.
    Steve

There's a short and a long answer to your question - don't you just hate when that happens? The short answer is that iWork is a Universal Binary so the migrated program should run. However, it has been my experience that migrating from a PPC to an Intel system can be fraught with issues and I've come to recommend against it. That's not to say that it isn't possible to migrate successfully - I migrated from my PowerBook to my MacBook Pro without any problems. Then the next four migrations I performed were all disasters.

  • Re: Intel PRO/1000 PT Quad Port / xserve, osx 10.8.2 and intel gigabit quad port LP card

Hi Antonio, this an old discussion than i don't have found an issue.
I have bought the intel ethernet pro/1000 quad port Low Profile Server, i have installed it into the xserve.
I have downloaded and installed the drivers of small tree website, and i follow the instruction of this knowledge pages.
    http://www.small-tree.com/kb_results.asp?ID=44.
But the xserve doesn't recognize the intel ethernet card.
Have you an idea to help me?
thanks a lot for your precious help

    HI Sam,
No at this time, i haven't issue for this problème.
But, i try intel card soon with a mac pro.
The xserve detecte the card, but not recognize the drivers for it.
maybe one day, i have good new.

  • OT: 2 Video card - Macpro quad

Has anyone tried hooking up 4 monitors to one of the babies yet?

Yeah I went ahead and just ordered another 2600 like the machine came with. I don't do any gaming, graphic arts layout instead. So I use 3 monitors (palettes palettes everywhere!). I wonder why it doesn't work? They changed that much, beyond adding 4 more cores?
One question, what IS the difference between the current Mac Pros and the "early 2008s", anyway? Apple doesn't list the specs on the spec page for all Macs except for "early 2008".
    Just curious...

  • I have a macpro quad, suddenly using flash it freeze and pink dots went all over the screen, I tried re-starting it but the same pink dots come at start up and don't allow the computer to start.  What can I do?

I don't know what to do, I have clean the connections, also started it from disk and made a recovery but still creates the same problem.

Either your video card has a problem or your monitor has.  This has nothing to do with flash, particularly since your picture is showing the problem at boot time.
Check your connections.  Try reseating the video card (remove and plug back in).  Make sure dust is blown off of it.  And try a smc reset probably as a last resort.

  • Output Preview crash when open, while opening PDF

    I've got a problem with Acrobat 10.1.12 on a Mid 2012 MacPro Quad-Core running OSX 10.9.5 (same on Late 2013 MacPro Six-Core)
When I open a PDF with Output Preview open and point an click on an object to measure it, Acrobat crashes. Same with more than 3 PDF open on the 2013 MacPro.
The only way to work around is to reopen Output Preview before clicking into the document, which isn't a proper solution with up to 150 PDF to check every day.
    Things i've tried so far:
OSX and Acrobat (installed Plugin is PitStop Pro 11) clean install
clear the whole Suitcase to avoid font problems
    I'm thankful for any suggestion.

  • New Airport Extreme not working with my Quad Macpro

    Hi all-
My Linksys 902.11b router finally died and our household is now completely Mac-based (all with Airport Extreme cards), so I decided to take the plunge and get an Airport Extreme.
2 of the machines on my home's network are doing fine with the router and are getting good speeds - iMac Dual 2.4 (10.5.1) - Both the wired and wireless connections are solid with this machine / Macbook Dual 2.0 (10.5.1) - Both the wired and wireless connections are solid with this machine as well.
I have a Macpro Quad 2.66 machine running 10.4.11. I cannot upgrade to 10.5 yet on this machine since it's being used in my recording studio business and there are known issues with some of my apps and 10.5 at the moment.
The Quad can see the network and has seemingly strong signal from the Airport Extreme BS, but DHCP reception is inconsistent (the machine often eds up using a self-assigned IP for some reason) and IP connectivity in general is inconsistent, even when an appropriate static LAN IP is manually setup. I can often get to a few webpages while using a manually config'd IP, but only with very slow DL speeds and then the connection quickly disappears and drops out entirely.
The AExtreme is setup like this: DSL Modem-->Airport Extreme (config'd with a static IP from my ISP) -->DHCP broadcast dummy IP's to my network. Currently I've not setup any security since I'm in the process of troubleshooting and I don't want to further complicate the situation. Radio-mode on the AExtreme is set to 802.11n (b/g compatible)/Channel 1. I've tried numerous config setups on the AExtreme, but none have helped the situation.
I've also disabled IPv6 on all clients per some reading on the forums of possible issues.
Anyone know what the problem might be? Is it perhaps an issue because the Macpro's using 10.4.11?
FYI, I've also also got an extra Airport Express around that's not being used that could be used as a repeater/wired connection downstairs if broadcast strength is the issue, which seems somewhat unlikely to me. I'm not sure how to config the AExpress to work in this capacity though, so if anyone could point me to a tutorial I'd appreciate it very much.
    Thanks in advance.
    Lee

I just did some more testing using an app mentioned here on the forums, iStumbler. The app offered these details:
    - Signal Strength is between 45%-56%
    - Noise is between 24%-41%
    - Freq = 2412
    - No websites load despite it's seeing the router and saying we've joined it.
I also did a screen capture of the iStumbler's screen in case that's helpful. There were several bits of info I wasn't sure about.
    Here's the screen grab: http://www.pbase.com/infiniteposse/image/91793322/original

  • Expanding my Quad core 'old" MacPro to 8 Core

I've been searching around since Dec 07, soon after I bought my new MacPro Quad to find out what is available to upgrade it to an 8 core.. and this is before they announced the new MacPro 8 core a month after I bought my Quad MacPro. (sigh)
I remember seeing somewhere at the time that the old MacPro could be had in a 4 or 8 core.. but now I am unable to find any info..
The questions are: (If you have a url that explains all this, much appreciated)
    (A) Can I upgrade my old new MacPro to 8 core (I do a lot of video and photo work.)I'm finding my MacPro slower than my Quad core PC doing the same tasks.
    (B) If yes, what are the CPU options, and where to find them?!
I don't game at all with this MacPro, but want to be able to do my video work in a much faster manner..
yes, kinda ***** this all came out at the same time of the new MacPro announcements but whachagonnado?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers

hi Hatter, trying to follow where you're pointing with this.. My RAID10 setup is the two drives striped and two drives mirroring the striped drives.. which gives me the 1 Tb space.. I don't use a scratch disk or do backups.. nothing to back up to be honest.. The little video work I've done thus far indicate no probs with the captures, or the editing as far as not using a scratch disk. The first time I tried a scratch disk on USB it pooched the drive so I had to reformat it.. (not knowing you actually had to "eject" a drive before pulling the plug..)
I think I might have done it with a slightly different set up if I had to do it again.. I don't know if this would work or would make any sense but I think I'd have a stand alone boot disk, and a backup disk for the boot drive (mirroring) and stripe the other two drives for capturing and editing videos.. (is this what you meant in your 2nd para?)
However, right now I'm just starting to work with the mac and learning my way through.. All funs and giggles till someone loses an eye.. ; )
Note: you're not missing anything with Vista.. I've downgraded a recently new laptop that came with Vista to XP.. now it's more useable and faster.. and didn't cost me anything. MS has a setup that allows you to transport your Vista licence to an XP OS installation.. but there's a catch.. If you have Vista Biz, you can only do this with XP Pro.. so find someone else's disk, but use your Vista licence. Nice. But I digress.
    Cheers M8
