MacPro Randomly Stalls

My MacPro stalls randomly in the middle of tasks. I have to "force quit" and then just close the force quit window and not actually force quitting an application. I have run Disk Utility countless times to repair the disks finding nothing and yet the problem continues. Can someone please shed some light on my problem? I am currently running OS 10.5.4.

Run Disk Warrior instead, don't trust Apple First Aid, it doesn't do a thorough job.

  • Safari 6.0.5 randomly stalls on loading pages which eventually load after hitting refresh several times. Also youtube videos will not play (blank window).

For the last few days, I've been experiencing problems with Safari 6.0.5 stalling while apparently trying to load a web page. It seems to occur randomly either when manually entering a URL address or clicking a link on a loaded web page or web search results. Using the URL bar to enter a search term is also subject to the same random stalling.
The problem is usually resolved by repeated reloads of the page (or re entering the search term or manual URL address). However the frequency with which I have to do this has become really quite annoying.
Wondering if anyone else has experienced this and knows the cause/solution?
    Thanks
    Toby

<edit: youtube issue resolved by uninstalling all my extensions. still testing safari to see if it continues to stall randomly>

  • IBook Randomly Stalls/Cycles Down

The problem started roughly a week and a half ago, where my iBook will randomly cycle down (making the same noise as when it shuts down) and ultimately stall, forcing me to manually shut down via the power-button and reboot in similar fashion.
However, more recently the frequency of occurrences has increased, to include occurring most often in the middle of start-up. There are now instances where it takes up to 30 minutes of manual-shutdown and reboot in order to get the unit just to cycle completely through startup.
I've had this laptop since 2005 and did not purchase Apple Care, much to my dismay since this individual unit has managed to torch 3 hard drives and 4 logic boards since purchase. And for the past 6 months, the battery has decided to no longer hold any charge and thus the unit will only run if connect through the adaptor, and immediately shuts down if unplugged.
First question is whether there is any explanation as to what is causing these random stalls/shutdowns? Is it relevant to not having the battery available as a power source? I suspect the lithium battery has simply outlived its viability.
However, before I spend the $$$ to replace the battery, as it is only available online now, I want to figure out if this is just a time to scrap working with this unit and purchase a new one.
Though I have to tell you that after the massive amount of data I have lost due to the numerous hardware failures I experienced in the first two years of ownership with this current unit, I'm extremely reluctant to purchase another Apple brand laptop, as tech support essentially shined me on due to the fact that I didn't purchase Apple Care, and only chose to plug in new parts, so it seemed without investigating the cause of the problem.
Thanks in advance, everyone. Here's hoping the unit allows me on to even be able to read responses.

How old is your battery? Even modern batteries have a finite number of charge cycles, then the chemicals become exhausted and they won't be able to hold much power, until they eventually die. In constant use, my experience has been that you'd be lucky to get 2, at most 3 years out of a NiMH or even lithium battery.
Do you have the same problems if the charging plug is in?

  • MacPro randomly wakes

I have a late 2008 model MacPro 2.8 octo-core running the latest version of OSX.
I've unplugged all devices, turned off wifi and bluetooth and in the last 8 days my MacPro randomly turns on by itself during the night and during the day. I come home to blasting fans.
I'm not sure what to do or where to look in a log to find out what is stirring it to wake.

  • MacPro Startup Stalls-then boots to wrong drive

Greetings! I am stumped. My trusty MacPro (dual 3ghz-quadcore) has started to exhibit strange behavior on startup. A few days ago the startup was interupted by what I thought sounded like a failing drive (hic-pause-hic), so I did a fresh install of Lion on another internal drive to head off disaster. That was fine for a few days, but now things have taken a mysterious turn for the worse.
Once the start button is pressed, I get the led light on the button, the monitor shows white/grey the fans spin up and then stop, and then it just sits there, silent. Here's the weird thing... after waiting and watching that white screen for almost 20 minutes, it suddenly booted into my former Snow Leopard drive and started fine.
I am unable to influence the startup in any way. That is, I can't start in single-user mode or select the startup disk by using keyboard commands since the startup is effectively stalled on that white screen.
I have reset the SMC, unplugged an external esata card and did a dust removal. But, since the computer does not respond to startup keyboard commands, I'm not sure how to proceed further.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'd be very grateful for any suggestions on how to pin down the issue.

I wish Apple Support and Knowledge Base (Tech notes and articles) were easy to use.
Lion has Recovery mode - that is available at startup.
Command + R gets you there and best and maybe only way to repair a disk directory.
You never want to repair a drive with anything older than what you run.
So learn to find a way to use CMD - R and also to CLONE your system
Other commands at startup, Safe Mode (Shift), Single Usere (S) and Verbose (V)
TimeMachine backup - 2TB WD Green
Clone the system drive - WD Black 1.5TB $107 also makes a nice fast boot drive if you aren't ready for $200 120GB SSD

  • Random stalling

    Evening, mornin' all,
this is the first post from a somewhat frustrated switcher.
Didn´t know in what forum to post. Since the problem arises in most applications I figures this is the right place.
My 2 month old mac mini´s OS is acting weird.
I first noticed it when Itunes stuttered. And I mean heavy stuttering. Every 4 seconds a 1 second stall, in every song. On PC speakers as well as through airport. CD´s are self imported. BTW, radio stream does not stutter!
After that, I noticed that i.e. when clicking on the apple menu, it took a second or two before it to come active (beach ball playing up)
Hovering over the menu (showing pull down menus) showed stalling as well. For about 2 seconds. The pulldown menu of one item will stay down, while I can point the pointer anywhere I want. This phenomenon takes about 10 seconds of hovering before to pup up.
"Closing" an app (red button) takes a second or two. On a lot of occasions
Safari gives me on various occasions faster typing than my shadow. First typing then letters appear. Three windows open and switching between them often takes 3 seconds after clicking the said tab.
Other apps show about the same lag.
I did an exstensive hardware check (holding D on startup) leading to no appearant problem
SMART test shows about 65 reallocated bad sectors, leading to a "Fail" status
Used the disk utility program as well.
Monitor log only shows the hangups in safari. Not in other apps, although it happens there as well.
Wanting to use the mini as a media center, this hickup renders it useless to me.
By bying a mac, I wanted to get rid of the windoze hassles with various disk preformance control programs around, registry cleaners and what have you not.
FWIW, Besides office for mac (sorry folks, it´s for the wife) I have no other programs installed. No movies either (I have the thing barely for 2 months)
    Anyone having the same experience?
    appologies for the lengthy post!
    cheers

Well I'm back and so is the problem. It seems that the new harddrive did not solve anything at all.
I've just typed the previous sentence with nothing being displayed for 4 seconds. Beach balls come up all the time. The mac hangs at frequent random intervals. Filling in spotlight search window, clicking sent items in mail,... a lot of clicks result in a 4 second wait before the mac starts action. I'm getting very frustrated with my new mac. I do not notice any extreme cpu use during these frequent stalls. I have no clue what is causing them. It also happens when Safari is not running. Maybe I should claim a new mac mini in the store. I've used time machine to reinstall the data on my HD. But besides my CDs and MSoffice for the wife, there's no progs or data installed.
    cheers,

  • MacPro randomly shuts down after upgrading to GTX 660

So I've had the EVGA GTX 285 mac edition in my MacPro 3,1 for a while now and decided to upgrade to the EVGA GTX 660 because I wanted a card that would provide more power for my 3d work and allow more gaming potential when I'm not working. After the upgrade I have been experiencing random shut downs. At first I thought it was during heavy loads (from my 3d software) but yesterday a shut down occured when I was just typing up an email with hardly anything running in the background. I've tried to diagnose the problem but to no avail. I believe the power supply is enough because the older card uses 2 of the power ports inside the MacPro while this new card uses just one. It's not overheating because everything runs at around 30C - 50C (rarely spiking to 58C.) Anyone know what could be the cause? I am working on my Windows partition by the way.

How interesting...we've noticed the same thing on 3 different occasions as recently as this a.m.. My wife was online for school, and the screen suddenly went "almost" black. There was nothing to do but shut down and turn it back on.
In 3 years since we've had this iMac, and running on 10.4, we never had this problem, so we're also hoping the community out there has some input on this issue.
    Thanks!

  • Ath9k slow an unreliable; carl9170 randomly stalls

I've been trying (unsuccessfully) for months to get reliable wireless on a desktop. I have tried three different cards, each with different chipsets.
The one I would like to get working most is the D-Link DWA-556, which is based on the ath9k chipset AR5416+AR2133. (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=549) I specifically bought this card after looking online for what seemed to be the most compatible wireless N card for Linux after having problems with my previous cards. Everything seemed to point to the drivers being of decent quality and having it work without too much effort. Boy, was that wrong.
Most of the time it will fail to grab the address from DHCP. Sometimes it will connect successfully, but it is incredibly slow. Running online broadband speed tests will typically show speeds of around 0.5 Mbps, and local file transfers are around 500 KBps.
Looking online, I saw this kernel bug (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31452), but the fix was committed in 2.6.38.5 and I am currently on 2.6.38.6. There were other posts online recommending disabling hardware encryption with the ath9k module option "nohwcrypt=1", but that didn't seem to fix it. In fact, after disabling hardware encryption it seemed to make it more likely for DHCP to time out, and that persisted even after re-enabling hardware encryption and even rebooting. I also tried to install compat-wireless-patched and compat-wireless-patched-daily from AUR to no effect. (normal compat-wireless fails to compile...)
Here are the messages in everything.log when it fails to connect:

My fallback is what I was using before, which is a USB wireless N dongle based on the ar9170 chipset. (http://www.iogear.com/product/GWU623/) It mostly works alright, if a little slow for my tastes for local file transfers, (around 2.5 MBps) but the big problem is the network will sometimes stall for a couple minutes. There don't appear to be any messages in the logs when this happens, and iwconfig and ifconfig still say that it's connected, but any attempts to access the network fail until it comes back in a couple minutes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. To say this has been frustrating is a great understatement.

A little more information: Here's the output for iwconfig
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"d20"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.417 GHz Access Point: 00:18:E7:EF:EA:9E
    Bit Rate=104 Mb/s Tx-Power=19 dBm
    Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
    Power Management:off
    Link Quality=40/70 Signal level=-70 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:64 Missed beacon:0
Despite this decent looking output for bit rate and signal, scp is currently transferring at around 60 KB/s. However, the "Invalid misc" part seems to be increasing at a fast rate when transferring data. (after around a minute of letting scp run, it had an additional 100 "Invalid misc") This seems to be similar to the kernel bug that I linked to, but it happens regardless of hardware encryption and the version of the kernel I am running already has the fix, though it's possible it's a separate bug related bug.

  • Random stalls caused by khugepaged?

I have a fairly beefy Arch Linux computer, kernel 3.7.7-1-ARCH. However, recently it's been having random freeze ups. Never common, but it'd freeze for a good 15 seconds where no program is responsive. Sometimes the mouse freezes with it and the cursor doesn't move. After this happens, it'll usually happen 2 or 3 more times until I decide to just restart my computer.
It just happened again a few minutes ago and this time I traced it using top. Whenever my computer would freeze, khugepaged CPU usage would randomly rise to 100%.
I run VMWare with 7 gigs of RAM assigned to it, however, my computer has 16G of RAM. When this last freeze up happened, I had 6G of RAM free. To give an idea, heres the header of top

  • 2008 Macpro random shutdowns

I have a Mac Pro 2008 and it was the best computer ever.
Lately about 2 months ago it started to randomly shutdown.
The computer would crash with no indication, the screen goes
to black and after about 10 seconds, the fan would run at full speed.
All the while the power never cuts off.
    what is going on ?
    any experience ?
Help is much appreciated as I can't get any work going on at this time.

Start by cleaning out all the accumulated dust.
Do a smc and pram reset.
Boot from your recovery partition and repair/verify your drives (not repair permissions).
You might want to add a temperature monitor like iStat Pro, iStat Menus, Temperature Monitor, Hardware Monitor, etc.  Maybe somthing is overheating.
Consider reseating your video card and dimms.

  • MacPro randomly shutting down

When I bump into my desk, even slightly, the Mac Pro shuts down and tries to restart, but although the tower "on" light remains on, it doesn't actually restart and the screen remains black. I then have to manually shut down and then power back on. I then get a message asking whether I want to send a report to Apple, which I do.
Also, For no discernible reason, the mouse will stop working. I have both a usb mouse attached and the wireless Apple mighty mouse. The only way I can get them to work again is to shut the computer down, manually, then restart.
These problems began about two weeks ago and I don't remember anything which might have started the problem. I'd appreciate any help, or advice. Thanks-Mike

It sounds almost like a loose internal connection or a loose wire. Have you had a look at whether your RAM sticks might be loose or there is excess dust inside.
It could alternatively be your harddrive disk not liking the bump (is it seated correctly?)

I get almost exactly the same. I must say: since going from 10.7 to 10.8, but that may actually be a coincidence. But I really don't know.
The differences are here set in italics. However, I guess the main difference might be that it mentions an Error overflow absent in James' report, and that the panic section (to the end) ends in CS … , SS … , Error Code … etc., equally absent in James'.
I can't run a hardware check, for some reason it won't on my machine (cf https://discussions.apple.com/message/19712791#19712791).
    Thanks

  • MacPro Randomly Restarts with Black Screen, Kernal Panic

    Please help...
I have a Mac Pro 4,1 Early 2009 running OS10.9.5.    In Feb'14 I installed a new graphics card, NVIDIA Quadro 4000 for Mac. Lately, though, for about the past two months, my computer has suddenly restarted in the middle of a task. It restarts with a black screen. I'd then have to hard-restart my computer to bring my monitor back to life. When the Mac finishes starting up, I am greeted with what I understand to be a Kernal Panic report. This problem has been occurring more frequently now, which is prompting this post.
Typically, I've noticed that the restarting/crash would occur when I am doing video related things that seem to tax the system. So much so that my first thought was that my system was overheating? Yesterday, I observed that the crash occurred when playing video in a web browser, and it happened each time I tried transferring 30GB from a USB source to an external harddrive.
I performed a Hardware Test, short and extended, and everything came back as normal. I also uninstalled CUDA Drivers, but to no avail.
Then, I decided to remove the Quadro 4000 video card and put back in the original video card, a NVIDIA GeForce GT 120.  My system has since been working well, as I was able to successfully transfer the 30GB that previously caused the system to crash.
So my question: Is my NVIDIA Quadro 4000 video card dead? Or, are the Kernal Panics a result of bad software, meaning I should reinstall the OS? What should I do next, as I need the Quadro card for it's cuda power in video editing?
    Thanks for the help!
Here are some Kernal Panic reports from yesterday...

Once the hexadecimal Addresses are edited out, it is easier to see that the problem was related to the display card. NVRM is the NVIDIA Display RAM on the card. It appears to have failed. This is not an issue with the Driver, but with the card.
Replacing that card with an old one and having the symptoms disappear supports that evidence.

  • Random freezes/crash - help please!

my macpro randomly freezes (spinning beachball) it happens using FireFox, iTunes etc. I'm unable to force quit the apps and I have to "crash" the computer. I ran "memtest" - checked out ok. I ran AHT - ok too.
I've read that usb devices can cause this problem (I have a Mbox2 for ProTools) but I need my usb devices (who doesn't?) I've found older posts with this problem - but I can't find a solution. Does 10.4.9 address this problem? (I haven't upgraded yet - awaiting ProTools qualification) any help would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks in advance
MacPro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   3 gig of ram

If you are old like me, that is a high probability :>). But, it could be that Apple, when they shipped you your Mac Pro, used the delta update to get you to 10.4.8 and not the combo update. Several that post here are adamant that one use the Combo, so much so, that I have adopted that methodology. The download is not that much larger, and after the rush ceases, I install over the delta I got from Software update. It seems that issues are resolved from doing things that aren't related. But that seems to be a life constant..... for me anyway. The Combos can't hurt and are worth a try :>)

  • Time Machine Erratic/Stalls

Add me to the list of people experiencing major troubles with Time Machine. I've been trying to use it for over two month, and have been going crazy trying to troubleshoot the difficulties. The trouble is that TM randomly stalls during the backup process. It just stops backing up; it doesn't freeze anything, or cause any other noticeable problem, and it doesn't produce any error messages in the Console application. Occasionally, it will, after very long periods, pick up and produce a completed backup once or twice a day. Now, however, it is trying to do its initial backup (after a re-formatting of the external drive), and will not complete it (it stalls at about 120 GB of 197 GB).
I had a one-week period, where it actually worked the way it should--performing hourly backups. That was, I believe, after I did a reinstall of Leopard--an archive and install, to solve other problems Leopard was having (the new Photoshop not working, the disappearance of the PDF print button, etc.). But for some reason it stopped working on the hour.
In the process of troubleshooting, I've tried Time Machine with two different, new 500 GB external drives--a LaCie, and a Western Digital MyBook, the first a USB drive, the second a firewire/USB (I tried modes of connecting for MyBook one). I've reformatted both drives various times, using both the APM and GUID partition map schemes. I've tried reformatting each drive several times, even zeroing out the data once when erasing the disk. I've done various maintenance scans of both external drives and my internal drives using both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior 4.0, and have corrected whatever errors have appeared.
It's very frustrating, but apparently not restricted to me. Any help out there?

Thanks for the tip Matthew - I can't say definitively that this has solved my Time Machine woes long-term, but I can say in the immediate, it has solved the problem and aloud a successful full backup.
I have been plagued by TM issues since the last update to 10.5.2. It will go days working perfectly, and then all the sudden stop working and report either that it could not create a file, could not write to the disk, could not read the disk, or even couldn't find the disk. Other people have reported success with various formatting/partitioning solutions - all of which I have tried and provided immediate resolution, but then TM fails back again after a couple of days. I have attempted to use various drives and connection methods all with the same result. This has become very frustrating and made Time Machine about as useful as my old Dell sitting in the corner.
I hope this fixes the problem long term, I will update at a later time after it has been successful for more than a few days. I also hope Apple is listening!
I just recently switched to the Mac and am very happy with it - save this one on-going and rather large issue.
