MacPro randomly wakes

I have a late 2008 model MacPro 2.8 octo-core running the latest version of OSX.
I've unplugged all devices, turned off wifi and bluetooth and in the last 8 days my MacPro randomly turns on by itself during the night and during the day. I come home to blasting fans.
I'm not sure what to do or where to look in a log to find out what is stirring it to wake.

  • MBP Randomly Wakes Up With Lid Closed

    Hi,
My Macbook Pro (OS 10.4.11) always randomly wakes up by itself after I closed the display lid. Is there anything I can do to remedy this? Thanks.

I get this too and it is really really annoying. Then, when I open the lid to try to put it to sleep again, it goes to sleep, so now it's doing the opposite: asleep with lid open and awake with lid closed. The real problem is that I can't wake it up! The other annoying thing is that with the lid closed some of my bluetooth devices i.e. wireless keyboard and mouse wake it up. Solutions?

  • Macbook randomly wakes up from sleep!

    Hello,
I have a macbook 13" (white) and I use 10.5.2. When I set my macbook to sleep it does what it is supposed to. But it randomly wakes up. It does that when I am using the power adapter or battery. It even does it when I have the lid closed. It is really annoying, because I never know if it is going to stay asleep or not. Sometimes it wakes up at a certain time (19:00) and sometimes it simply wakes up whenever. I looked for messages in the consoles and it only showed that it went to sleep and woke up. Not why.
However, there is a message in the console that keeps coming up (every 10 seconds):
    2/18/08 6:41:00 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.app4mac.CheckUpAgent[13413]) posix_spawn("/Applications/CheckUp.app/Contents/MacOS/CheckUpAgent", ...): No such file or directory
    2/18/08 6:41:01 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.app4mac.CheckUpAgent[13413]) Exited with exit code: 1
    2/18/08 6:41:01 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.app4mac.CheckUpAgent) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
Is this normal? What is wrong with my mac?? Please help me...
P.S.: I do not have it scheduled to wake up in the preferences. I do, however use iSleep, but it is not started when this problem occurs.
And it did this with 10.5.1 too...

I'm going to make 2 assumptions: 1) you know it is going to sleep because you can see the little diode blinking on and off. 2) in the energy tab of the system preferences you don't have the computer configure to wake up at a particular time.
You could fiddle faddle about like this for days and never find it. I know - its why my hairline is receding Create a new account and when you put it asleep disconnect everything but the power cord and see if the computer still wakes up. If not you know the problem was one of your peripherals or something in your account. Still logged into the test account, start adding peripherals one at a time. If you wake up at any point you now have a suspect peripheral. If not, it is your account.

  • Twist - BIOS 1.67 - random wake up

After 1.67 BIOS update Twist began to randomly wake up from sleep mode after 2-3 hours of sleeping. Also deep sleep (standby mode) stopped working. After revert to 1.63 (1.65 was also broken update (USB ports weren't working after sleep mode) and 1.66 just resolved that issue) everything goes back to normal.

Albert, go to http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS032000 , which is the download site for the latest BIOS update.  Scroll near the bottom of the page and you will find all the previous versions of the BIOS files that you can download.  Just select the file and it should begin to download.

  • Screen randomly wakes when playing iPod

When I am playing music with the native iPod app the screen randomly wakes when the next song begins playing. It is not consistent but it is normally ~10 seconds or earlier into the next song that the screen wakes and the lock screen is displayed.
I am running 4.0.1 and the iPhone 4 is sitting on the desk when this happens (ruling out "are you pushing any buttons" comments!)
    Anyone else experienced this?

I first noticed this issue when I upgraded my 3G to iOS 4. I later purchased an iPhone 4 and have seen this bug on every version of iOS: 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, and now 4.1
It's so easy to reproduce, I can't see why it hasn't been fixed yet!
How are you able to reproduce it? I'm unable to, it's totally random. If I'm able to reproduce the problem I'd like to setup an appointment to take the phone in.
4.1 did not fix this issue for me by the way.

  • G5 randomly wakes from sleep usually near midnight-screen sometimes flashes

Since handing down my G5 to my mom, it randomly wakes from sleep. I always notice that it happens at night because then I can see the light from the display. Not sure if it happens exactly at midnight each night but its usually near then. I just get up and put it back to sleep and its usually fine until the next night.
Occasionally when this happens the screen will flash - it will flash the desktop, then a black screen - and on and on. The only thing I could think of that might wake it up was that I used to have it set to speak the time every hour, but I have turned that off. Any suggestions?

You might learn more about why that computer is waking up by launching the Console utility and looking for messages around that time. If you see messages that might be related but don't understand them or aren't sure what to do about them, post them here and someone may be able to help.

  • Mbp randomly wakes from sleep

For some reason, my mbp SR 2.2ghz stock model randomly wakes from sleep for no reason roughly 20 minutes after I put it to sleep. I am about 10 feet from the computer and do not touch it. Auto wake from bluetooth is off. I reset the video ram, ran onyx, and tried everything i could think of. Nothing is plugged in. No programs are running. How do I fix this?

Follow the instruction listed in this thread…
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1077308
… and return the results. There might well be an issue within Mac OS X and or the hardware which needs identifying and this will help Apple identify/comfirm their suspicions.
By the way, if you use a password to wake your MBP from sleep you will need to disable it so your MBP won't go back to sleep.

  • X121e randomly wake up from suspended status and real time clock error

    Hi all
Previously I considered my x121e suffer from overheating issue and causes real time clock error (RTC). However, after more testing and investigation, I believe the problem is related to other hardware issues and I like to hear people opinion before sending the laptop back to Lenovo.
The machine goes into suspend status either pressing the power button or closing the lid from Windows7 (clean install) without problem. However, it would wake up itself randomly, "beep" twice and screen shows RTC and CMOS checksum error. This happen more often when I am holding the machine (i.e. some movement/vibration). I wonder:
    - Is it the RTC battery problem, cause the RTC to wake up the machine?
    - Other hardware failure?
The laptop has a clean OS installed/recovered. Latest 1.16 Bios installed. No USB or memory card attached. Ram replaced and not the cause.
    Please advise
    Howard

    Hello,
I am unsure; you would have to contact Lenovo directly and find out how they handle this situation.  They may want the ThinkPad X121e back so they can run thorough diagnostics on it, just in case the problem is something else.  That way it gets fixed the first time.

  • Macbook Pro random wake from sleep

Last September my MBP went to service for a dead fan, a corroded top case and a whine problem (which was not fixed!). Ever since the machine has been randomly waking from sleep. Sometimes just picking up the machine will make it wake up. But the big problem is that it often wakes up while in my bag during my daily transits! Obviously I am highly concerned for both the heat and the hard drive. I have just reinstalled the entire OS, reset the PRAM and SMC, but to no avail. The machine still acts the same way! What is going on? The machine is always safely in sleep (most of the time in hibernate mode) when this happens. I can clearly hear the fans and drives are off when I put it in my bag; so the problem is not that it's not going to sleep.
    Any ideas?
P.S. I've got my Apple Care box just waiting to get registered... I seriously wished I wouldn't have had to use it so soon... Not to mention that my already recalled battery is not holding its charge, despite pmset reporting the status are Good/Good!

    Hello there DaveWoo,
It sounds like your computer is occasionally restarting on its own when you wake it from sleep. There can be a number of reasons for this to happen, and I recommend you use the following article to help you resolve or isolate the issue. Its pretty thorough and has a lot of information.

  • Has anyone experienced random wake/sleep cycles? (NOT random shut down)

I bought my macbook on August 1, 2006, and previously had a problem with my it randomly shutting down. I had that fixed in December. Now I'm having the opposite problem, essentially. Whenever I put my computer to sleep, it wakes itself up, waits a few seconds, puts itself back to sleep, waits a few more seconds, wakes itself up... a constant annoying cycle. It doesn't matter if I put it to sleep by closing the lid or by choosing "sleep" from the apple menu, it still does this. I thought that perhaps one of my applications was causing my macbook to wake itself up, but this happens even when no applications are in use and I'm completely disconnected from the internet. This is driving me CRAZY because the noise of it waking itself up keeps me awake, and having to close out of all of my applications and shut down every night or whenever I want to transport it is terribly bothersome. Plus... the fact that it is waking itself from sleep can't be positive! Does anyone have any advice? I'm going to take it into the mac store but I'm super busy and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions until then.
    Thanks!
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I started having an almost identical problem. I would put the computer to sleep the screen would go black and seem to shutdown for a couple of seconds. Then the CD drive would make it's noise and the computer would wake up. I reproduced it with a clean install of OSX. If I had a password set on the computer and did not enter the password the computer would go to back to sleep and then repeat the process again and again.
The first day it happened I could reproduce it every time. Now it's not so constant. I need to get the CPU to around 140 degrees Fahrenheit for a few minutes and then put the computer to sleep by typing command-option-eject.
I suspect that there is a faulty cable or sensor. Conincidentally when the problem ocurred my bluetooth also seemed to "disappear" the computer could not detect the bluetooth module. That leads me to believe that there might be two cables one that is a case-open-close sensor and a bluetooth cable sensor and that they are getting pinched.

  • MacPro randomly shuts down after upgrading to GTX 660

So I've had the EVGA GTX 285 mac edition in my MacPro 3,1 for a while now and decided to upgrade to the EVGA GTX 660 because I wanted a card that would provide more power for my 3d work and allow more gaming potential when I'm not working. After the upgrade I have been experiencing random shut downs. At first I thought it was during heavy loads (from my 3d software) but yesterday a shut down occured when I was just typing up an email with hardly anything running in the background. I've tried to diagnose the problem but to no avail. I believe the power supply is enough because the older card uses 2 of the power ports inside the MacPro while this new card uses just one. It's not overheating because everything runs at around 30C - 50C (rarely spiking to 58C.) Anyone know what could be the cause? I am working on my Windows partition by the way.

How interesting...we've noticed the same thing on 3 different occasions as recently as this a.m.. My wife was online for school, and the screen suddenly went "almost" black. There was nothing to do but shut down and turn it back on.
In 3 years since we've had this iMac, and running on 10.4, we never had this problem, so we're also hoping the community out there has some input on this issue.
    Thanks!

  • MacPro Randomly Stalls

My MacPro stalls randomly in the middle of tasks. I have to "force quit" and then just close the force quit window and not actually force quitting an application. I have run Disk Utility countless times to repair the disks finding nothing and yet the problem continues. Can someone please shed some light on my problem? I am currently running OS 10.5.4.

  • Screen randomly wakes

    Hi Guys,
Recently (possibly since the latest software rollout) my Z1 keeps waking from sleep.  The screen will light up and then turn off again after the screen timeout.  It happens on a regular basis (once every 15 minutes or so approximately)
I have uninstalled recently installed apps, tried disabling location settings, tried changing power settings, wifi settings, stamina settings and all to no avail .. it keeps on waking up randomly.
This is MOST ANNOYING at night when the light from the screen wakes me up too .... anyone got any ideas?  I would appreciate some help here.  If anyone from Sony reads these then please feel free to email me and I can provide more details if needed.
    Thanks in advance,
    John

I know that the screen wakes when you charge the phone and it reaches 100%.
But if its not during charging you may want to try running the phone in safe mode just to check if this could be cased by any app.

  • IMac randomly wakes up to black screen

Ok, I suppose the title says it all, but here's more detail.
We have a mid-2010 iMac used as a family computer with 5 user accounts. 95% of the time there are only two users logged in (me and my wife). Over the past couple of months we've had a problem where sometimes waking the iMac up presents us with a black screen.
Now, when I say a black screen I don't mean a black screen as if it's switched off, I mean a screen where the iMac wakes up and the video card produces a 'black' screen. Sometimes you can see (and move) the mouse pointer around, but that's it - everything else is black. Nothing I try 'wakes' the computer up. Pressing keys on the keyboard does nothing, and trying to do a force quit via the Command+Option+ESC keyboard shortcut does nothing. The only way I've ever found I can wake the computer when this happens is to force a shutdown and reboot.
As for my troubleshooting, I've zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC. Neither solved the problem. I've also disconnected all Time Machine drives for a few weeks while troubleshooting (in case that was causing the problem) but to no avail. I've also ensured all software is up-to-date. There is no indication of a hard drive issue (and both Drive Utility and Scannerz report no problems). I've also replaced Keyboard and Mouse batteries, and have checked Energy Saver settings and tried different things (including having the computer set to never sleep). The screen saver is not activated. And I've checked the login items for both accounts and we each only have two items, neither of which could be the issue.
I am now 99% sure that this problem only occurs when multiple users are logged in. It does not seem to happen if I am the only one logged in. I haven't yet tested to see if it happens if only my wife is logged in, although that would be my next test.
We are running Mac OS X 10.9.5 and have 12GB of RAM installed.  40% of the space on the hard drive is still free. Also, I do have a portable USB3 hard drive connected 24/7 as my iTunes and iPhoto library disk (although I did disconnect that for a while and also only have iTunes or iPhoto running when I am using them).
This has been the setup for ages without a problem, so it seems to me that something 'new' is happening here. As far as I can tell, the only software my wife uses on the iMac which I don't is MS Outlook (although I've never had a problem with using that on my MacBook Pro, and she doesn't seem to have any issues with it herself on the iMac).
Any suggestions anyone? This is now happening regularly enough to be a nuisance!

    Hi Linc
So, another week of troubleshooting hasn't got me too far, except that now I've confirmed that this can happen with only one user logged in, although it seems to take a lot longer before it does.
Anyway, I did try to follow the steps in those discussions you referred me to, but the instructions re starting my iMac in Safe Mode don't work for me. What I mean by this is that the computer starts to reboot in Safe Mode but after the progress bar finishes, I am always presented with my usual login screen. In other words, I never get a black screen with a cursor, but my menubar does have 'Safe Mode' displayed in red text on it.
I have also tried the Command-S startup combination to force a restart in single user mode and entered in the commands as described in the discussions. This works okay, but doesn't resolve my original 'black screen' problem.
So here I am seeking other suggestions?
    Any help is most appreciated!
    Joe.

  • Screen Randomly Wakes Up

After I close my lid to put my MacBook Pro to sleep, I notice sometimes that the computer will wake up and then after some time go back to sleep. Sometimes it does this multiple times before it finally stays asleep. Sometimes, I will open the lid just to see whats going on and most of the time it will display my login prompt to log in to my computer and then other times it displays nothing. If anyone know why this happens or what to do to stop it from occurring it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have the exact same problem and it drives me crazy, because it costs me so much time every time I want to put the machine to sleep. My other problem is that the machine often won't wake up when I open the lid. I've found this computer to be very unreliable and I have to "repair disk" way too often. My old aluminum Powerbook was so much better! However, everything on this MacBook Pro basically works... yet I feel like I'm on the verge of something disastrous. Is this worth taking to a Genius? The computer is less than a year old.
