MacPro Retina shuts down for no good reason.

Hi,
Just got the MacPro retina and it shuts down when I am away ... in the last two days, it just shuts down even though there is plenty of juice in the battery. Any known issues?

  • T40 shuts down for no particular reason

Within the past two weeks, my T40 has taken to shutting down somewhat arbitrarily. The fan seems to be working fine and it doesn't appear to be overheating. Often something like running a YouTube video is enough to shut it down.  The only thing that I have upgraded or changed besides the standard monthly Windows upgrades is the Think Vantage Toolbox.  I can't see where that would be a factor.  Battery and power supply check out O.K.
Perhaps it is just showing it's age.  Any idea what would be causing this?
Oh yes,  one other item, when it shuts off, I have to re-sign into my Yahoo homepage, otherwise I just get the generic Yahoo page.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Power Management was indeed the answer. Thank you for the suggestion. I didn't spot the change at first, but once I did, it worked.
For some unknown reason, when installing the Lenovo Toolbox, the Power Manager reset the Performance setting from "Adaptive" to "Highest."  I have now created a new power scheme with everything the same except for an "Adaptive" level for the CPU speed. The CPU temmperature is back to running  a more reasonable 44C to 70C and it doesn't shut itself down like before.  Big difference.
My T40 is back to whatever normal is for this seven-year old modified laptop, You have no idea what a relief that is.  I was already shopping new laptops. Now, I'm thinking that this laptop can become my road warrior, and I will look for a Desktop PC with a bigger screen, instead.  That's what I had secretly wanted to do all along.
This forum is outstanding.  It has saved me on more than one occasion.  Thank you so much.

  • Slowing down for no good reason

    Hello,
I've had my iMac since Nov 2002 and it's performance has in the last year began to slow down quite a bit. Safari is very slow, even though I have a cable connection. Safari used to run very very fast, but no longer. I use almost no other software besides Safari and iTunes. I've decided to write because it is getting very frustrating and I am considering switching to Windows, especially since I just bought a digital camcorder and discovered that my iMovie would not upload the video without lots of skipping and crashing. Does anyone have any idea what is happening to my iMac?
    Thanks.

Firefox keeps shutting down for now apparent reason. I'm typing away and boom, it's just gone! I've lost everything I've typed and have to start all over again!
No errors, no new software, the computer sits on a cooling fan and it hasn't run out of memory!
Am I missing an update? Though I'm NOT really thrilled with the fact that I can NOT choose my own home page! It defaults to the Firefox home page no matter what I put in as my home page in SETUP!
    But that's yet another issue!
    Please help me with this!
    Sincerely,
    Rodney

Hi Rodney, since your More System Details shows that you have MySearchDial, I suggest starting with a little malware cleanup.
Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, and click the "Installed on" column heading to group the items by date. This should help identify how MySearchDial got installed, probably as an undisclosed part of a bundle, and better let you zero in on unwanted software that may be tampering with your Firefox settings. Take out as much trash as you can here.
You may also want to supplement your regular security software with some of the scanners in our support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].

  • G5 suddenly shuts down for no reason

I am all of a sudden having sporadic shut downs, for no apparent reasons, on my Dual 2.7 GHz (1 GB DDR SDRAM) G5. Its just like the power cord is pulled out of the wall.
The computer, monitor and all accesories are powered off two APC battery back-up/power surge units. The equipment is only 9-months old and has not been a problem until the last two weeks.
    Thanks!

Check system.log in your Console application for lines like "Power Management received an overtemp signal. Going to sleep." or "localhost kernel: PowerMac7,3 Thermal Manager: Thermal Runaway Detected: System Will Sleep. You may have a processor(s) overheating and putting the G5 in thermal shutdown.

  • The MacBook keeps on shutting down for no reason

    Hi,
Well my MacBook is acting kind of weird lately. It'll constantly shuts down for no apparent reason and when I do turn it back on, it would turn on but shuts up right after. It does this about 5 times. I do not DL musics, movies and etc on this laptop. I just don't know whats wrong with it.
    Please help

I've had the exact same experience. About two weeks after getting my Macbook (in November) it started shuting down randomly with no warning. After a quick search on the net I found that this was a well documented and fairly widespread issue with Macbooks.
There are whole websites dedicated to it including 'autopsy' photos of Macbooks showing detailed images of the, apparently, faulty hardware that causes the problem and the changes after the repairs. It seems the only real fix to the problem is to have Apple replace these bits of the hardware (seems they are now replacing heatsinks and insulating some wires for heat).
I've updated all the firmware ect. and the guy from Apple Care walked me through resetting the PRAM, but the shutdowns continued the next day...
If you phone up Apple they seems to imediately recognize that it's a problem and schedule for you to send it in for repairs. That's where I'm at now and I'm hoping it will get done fast. I'm new to Apple (just swiched from a PC) and must say that as a new customer I'm really upset that they would sell me a computer that had a very well known and documented flaw (unforuntely I only found that out after I bought it and found the problem myself). People had been reporting these problems for months before I purchased my computer. Now I suppose my opinion Apple, after having switched from PCs, will be largely based on how well the customer service deals with this issue, their customer relationship management and how fast my Macbook gets repaired and returned.

My MBP has been working fine, until I updated to 10.5. Originally this problem started in Bootcamp running XP, but has now done this once in OS X, just a while ago. Just now when it did this again, I pressed the power key and the led on the front blinked really fast, then there was a tone- like it was doing a firmware update (but I did the firmware update months ago!).
I've done a power reset- taking out the battery and holding the power key down for 20 seconds, which seems to have helped, but then again this problem seems to be rather sporadic, and one can never tell when it is going to happen next.
Oh yes, there is a mechanical 'click' that sounds when it does it- like a relay click. Is there a relay power related IC on the motherboard?
Any clues anyone? (I'm sending this exact letter to Apple as well)
    Tom

It's an interesting thread, but I seem to have the problem even when the cord is plugged in. I did have battery problems when I first got this MBP, but they seemed to settle down once I used the computer a bit more. FWIW, I have now got them mostly while using Bootcamp. BC beta 1.3 was really stable and good. It wasn't until I bought Leopard that this problem started. And again, it's only happened 3 or 4 times now.
I'll just have to keep saving. I'm sure Apple will wise up to this sooner or later. (Incidently, I haven't been able to send anything to Apple as I can't find their direct contact addie. Can someone 'remind' me? Thanks!

I just downloaded Lion and now my computer just shuts down for no reason. What is its problem?

I recently made the same mistake.  The thing to do is download the new Quicken Essentials for MAC.  After you install the new version follow the instructions on how to transfer your old files.  There is a way, it just takes a little time and, if I remember correctly, it takes the info from your quicken backup files. Hopefully you had auto back up on and your files are intact.  I didn't and reconstruction was a bear but entirely possible.  The new Quicken is quite different but seems to work quite well.  Good luck.

  • Maverick Shuts Down For No Reason

I am tired of Maverick shutting down for no reason. It even does it in Safe Mode. I've tried all the tricks of removing preferences, extension and still it keep shutting down with it's kernel panic screen. I'm the one that's paniced. I can't work in any program, such as Final Cut or Safari for too long as it will shut down. I'm thinking I need to reformat. Great. My least favorite option. But, I need to get all my files off, deauthorize software and hoping that I can get my mail and other contact back.
Hoping someone might have an answer to avoid reformating.
I keep sending in these reports to APPLE, 3 to 8 a day. Here is the most recent one.....Hopefully, I can post this before my computer decides to reboot.

  • Shutting down for no reason

So, my ibook's been shutting down for no reason and seemingly random times. The battery is fine, but I noticed that it only shuts down when the power cable is plugged in. It might work fine for hours, and it's never shut off while actively charging (below 98% battery power). So it seems to me that it might be the dc board from what I've read around here on the forums, but I want to try to get confirmation before I try to fix it myself.
The only other detail about this situation that makes me wonder if it might be something else is that at almost the same time it seems that my power cable for my Western Digital external hard drive has gone out. Could they both be the effects of some kind of power surges? Or is it unrelated and just coincidental? I have everything plugged into a warrantied surge protector strip that should prevent that kind of thing, but I know failures do happen sometimes, or fluctuations in the power levels in a building might cause problems as well.
I'm probably overthinking all of this, so please help me out as I'm no expert at all. Thanks so much!
    Lydia

I just ran the PRAM reset, so we'll see how that does.
I have the problem when nothing except the power cord is plugged in.
The external is a USB drive with an AC source. The power cord for it acts the same way even when there's no drive attached, the light barely winks on then fades out. When the drive is attached it tries to start then turns off when the adapter (for the drive) turns its light off.
The power adapter for computer is fine according to all the standards on that page. I replaced it back in December, so it's not been used all that much. The connection looks good and the DC in board port looks fine too.
The fan comes on without problems and whenever I've checked the temps in istat it seems within normal levels.
What's the Apple Hardware test? I may have heard of it previously, but seem to drawing a complete blank on it now.
Also, at this point I'm leaning towards a power surge being the root of my problems. A bulb in an overhead light blew out the same day, I went to replace the bulb and had bought a high wattage bulb then found that the light had 2 bulbs inside and both had blown at the same time. My dad has some background in electronics and when I consulted him about the power surge theory he said it was likely. I went ahead and filed a report with the maker of the surge protector to try to get a claim in and possibly some kind of funds to help pay for whatever repairs are coming.
Thank you so much for your help and advice, I appreciate it!
