MacPro running slow with FCP6.02 editing ProRes422 footage

I've got a Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66 with 5GB of RAM, and am having unusual slowdowns while scrubbing AVCHD footage transcoded to ProRes422. I've been working all day in FCP and this has just recently started happening.
I've got no other programs in the background, and have disabled high-quality scrubbing.
Any help would be appreciated.

What sort of drive is this footage stored on?

Please boot in safe mode and test. Still slow? If you connect to a wireless network, you may have to connect with Ethernet in safe mode.
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode.)

Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing. I am using a brand new IMAC, I have 16GB RAM recently updated as it was running slow with 8GB and lots of hardrive space. When it crashes, i lose all my presents and it changes my preferences, it also fails to save or produce a recovered file despite settings asking it to do so every 5 mins now. When i try to report the problem, it says it has found an issue and gives me a link to a solution....but wont let me click on the link.... PLEASE HELP! It's killing my productivity.

If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins.

  • My Macbook Air is running slow with Yosemite.

My Macbook Air is running slow with Yosemite.
I checked out most of the blogs and everything and have removed widgets from the notification center, but everything seems to run kinda slowly.
Sure, i have the base model 2014 macbook air but that 4 gb ram should run a freakin finder just fine. I had Mavericks installed before, and with that, i could do everything. I even made cool music in GarageBand and nothing was lagging for me. Now i installed Yosemite... Everything is lagging. Scrolling seems like it happens around 10 FPS. That aint good man. Memory cleaner says around 1gb ram free when only the finder is running in the background (before it did around 2). I just uninstalled Memory Cleaner o I'm not looking at that little amount of memory. I don't know what to do now? I would appreciate it, if someone would help me. Otherwise, ill just wait for a new update.

Since it's new I would take it back for repair or exchange under your warranty before bothering to read further.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

There is no such Trojan or other malware known today that will do that using OS X nor has there ever been one. The most probable explanation is that somebody hacked into your e-mail account on the server, so you should change that password to something stronger right away. If it had come from your Mac then there would almost certainly be copies of those messages in your Sent Mail mailbox.

  • HT4623 iphone4 runs slow with ios7

Why does my iphone 4 run slow with ios 7.04 and can I get ios 6 back?

you cannot. there is no way to downgrade the ios.   you might just have a buggy version of the software. i, personally would do a restore. i and to do that with my 4s

  • Did macbook air mid 2009 running slow with mountain lion?

did macbook air mid 2009 running slow with mountain lion?

Yours is the first computer I've heard about on these forums that is attempting to run Mavericks with only 2GB of RAM.
Indeed that is acceptable per the Mavericks requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842
... but as you may know, Apple has not sold computers with as little as 2GB RAM for quite a while.
I suggest therefore you make sure you remove any applications that may be overtaxing your machine.  Examples are browsers other than Safari, Mac cleaning products (such as Mac Keeper), or any other non-Apple app that has some startup process running (such as Outlook).

My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for a maintenance reinstall. I presume I'd have to download Yosemite again, though I'd be happy just using Snow Leopard again too.
    Thanks for the help.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Older MacPro running slow--keep it or get newer Mac?

    We have a MacPro, but a little older generation, 2005-6. Processor: 2 x 2 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Memory: 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
I added a second hard drive a few years back, as well as more RAM (though now I can't remember how much! If this info would be helpful, please let me know where to look it up and I'll add that to my description.)  The second disk is a TB disk with about 450 GB free. We store all our photo, video and music content on the second drive. The boot disk is the original one that came with the Mac. It is not full, but has about 75 GB free. We have OS 10.6.8 installed on the boot HD, as since it is the original disk it won't accept the latest versions of OS Maverick or whatever is the most recent.
In the past few months, it has started to shut down instead of sleeping. If, however, an internet browser window is open, it will go to screen saver and then the screen will sleep, but not the computer, but the computer won't shut down, either. Basically, if all applications are closed, instead of sleeping, the computer will shut down. It will turn back on with just a key stroke, which is not typical when one does a proper shut down. It's like the key stroke or pushing the power button awakes it from sleep, only it wasn't sleeping, because it goes through the whole "ding" of turning one, apple screen, then sign-in. Does that make sense?
Also, it is running SUPER SLOW. If I have our browser (either Safari or Chrome) open, as well as iTunes or iPhoto, it's even worse.
Basically, my question is this: should we, or CAN we even, try to tidy up the computer we have, possibly replace a hard drive or add more RAM, or would it behoove us to just get a new computer?
We definitely don't need the capacity of a MacPro anymore, as the photo editing and such I was assuming I needed when we originally bought the computer is minimal enough that we don't need that kind of power any more. I'm thinking an iMac or MacBook Pro even would do. We do not do any gaming, just usual internet usage, photo editing (Photoshop), minimal video editing just with the Mac software, and basic word processing/power point type stuff. We are not programmers, professional photograpers or videographers.
I would *like* to salvage our computer, as I feel it has space available (empty drive bays) that we are not currently using, probably is just a little old and needs a clean-up. I back things up to our Time Machine often, have minimal desktop icons, clean out the caches, basic maintenance. I'm not a knowledgeable enough computer person to do much more. Is it worth trying to salvage it? When I contacted the Apple store a while back about checking it out they basically laughed at me and asked why I still had such a dinosaur. I HATE thinking that it's becoming necessary to chuck out a computer every 5-8 years and buy a new one, especially when it's one that has been designed to expand. But perhaps that's naïve. I don't want to waste time if it's hopeless, and am not opposed to buying a new machine if need be. BUT, I am philosophically opposed to chucking out something that can be spruced up.
Opinions? Recommendations? Please keep in mind we are novices, so tech talk often goes over my head. The most tech I've done is installed the second hard drive and extra RAM.
    Thanks.

  • Preview: why slow with nothing edited?

I'm running a trial of After Effects, to see what the product can mean for my business. I run an Intel Quad core with 8GB of RAM.
I have an empty 1280x720 29.7fps composition and no matter which 1280x720 video I import with different codecs, the preview (with the "play button" and not the "ram preview" button) always seem to be around 14-19fps (message: "NOT realtime") and that is without doing anything with the video (video placed in composite). Why do I have such low frame rates already when all it has to do is play the original video? I can't imagine what the frame rates will be if I actually start editing these files.
What am I missing here? I assume it's still filling the cache for the ram preview, but why does it take so long with nothing edited? Is there a way to avoid this, maybe by converting the video to a new format that AE manages to cache faster? I don't have this problem with a similar  product (demo) like HitFilm, even with some edits. Now don't get me wrong, I prefer to use AE but I still don't get this ram preview thing. In HitFilm I can add 3D effects and all kind of other stuff and the preview (video of same size) plays smoothly and with sound (in some cases a lower resolution is required).
I can understand that at some point you're going to reach the limit what you can preview realtime with the hardware available so that ram preview is necessary, but not when I haven't even done anything to the video.
    Confused...sigh

There are hundreds of video and illustration apps I have never heard of; many more video devices, too, like cameras. I don't have the time to follow every development in this industry. I know After Effecs, though.
Here's your statement: > "I don't have this problem with a similar  product (demo) like HitFilm, even with some edits. Now don't get me wrong, I prefer to use AE but I still don't get this ram preview thing. You seem to be implying here that this app is superior to AE for some functions. Since I have no experience with it, I bow to your superior knowledge and I encourage you to use the tools you need to accompolish your compositing tasks.
But you also seem to have a chip on your shoulder and I'm sorry you have chosen to deliberately misunderstand my statement which, I believe, acknowleges your predicament and congratulates you honestly for discovering the limitations of After Effects before you spend big money on the application.
    > I'm running a trial of After Effects, to see what the product can mean for my business. <
I've reported your post to the forum admins as unacceptably antisocial and equally ungrateful.

  • CS3 Bridge runs slow with 10.5 on a G5

I have finally updated my 2.0 dual G5 with 10.5 , 8 gigs memory. A clean install. I then installed CS3. Did all the updates. Photoshop opens and works great. Bridge however is slow. It recognizes my clicks but doesn't work immediately. It takes about 20 seconds or more to click into a folder. Definitely running slower than before. Is there any solutions to a fix out there that I need to do?. Please help.

    Ann, thanks for your reply.
I have set my prefs (caches, thumbnails and previews) for the quickest loading.
This is happening when I only have like 100 images in a folder. The main thing is that I have used Bridge before and it was nothing like this -- it was much, much faster. So it is nothing I have done. I think it is the newest update.
And they are stored locally on my internal hard drive
I am tempted to move to Bridge CS4 but only if I knew it would fix the issue.

  • CS3 script runs slow with CS4 and CS5

I have written a table transformation script for InDesign CS3, which formats an imported Excel table.
With InDesign CS3 the script runs well. Now I tried the same script with InDesign CS4 and CS5 and it runs very slow. It's about 10 times slower than with CS3.
I tried to turn off redrawing, but this didn't help. It even got slower again!
Does someone has made similar experiences? Could you solve the performance issue?
Do scripts in CS4/CS5 generally run slower than in CS3?
Does CS4 differ so much to CS3 that the script runs 10 times slower?
What can I do to improve the execution performance?
Thanks for any tips / advices etc.

I now have made some tests with profile / timing. Here are the results.
you find the code snipped below. It iterates first over all rows and then over all cells inside of the row. In the cell iteration, the function hasGapInLineBelow(...) does more iterations.
The example is with a table of 42 rows and 9 cells.
    I have compared CS3 and CS5
    there are 3 test cases:
for 1/1 means: first for-loop is in iteration 1 and second for loop is in iteration 1 (statements for first row and first cell done)
for 1/9 means: first for-loop is in iteration 1 and second for loop is in iteration 9 (statements for first row and all 9 cells of the row done)
for 2/9 means: first for-loop is in iteration 2 and second for loop is in iteration 2 (statements for second row and all 9 cells of the row done)
it's strange that normal variable assignments take lot of time (like the statement startPos = indexLeftNeightbourOfCurrentCell;) -> I don't understand why this can be so time consuming!?!
it's also strange why in "for 1/9" and "for 2/9" variable assignments take much longer than in "for 1/1"...
could I use another data type than array for the variable isMergedRow? Which one?
do you know any performance optimizations?
in which time unit ExtendScript Toolkit shows the measured periods?
how are the times calculated in loops? Are these the times sumed up over all iterations or is it just the time for a single statement?

  • MacPro running slow, takes forever for anything to load, HELP!!!

Downloaded Maverick and my MacBook Pro has been running slow, lagging, often times it will
Not even load app or web page, if it does it takes a very long time.  Please advise

    Bimmer330,
when a new version of OS X is installed, Spotlight will spend time reïndexing the internal hard drive, because so many files changed between the old version of OS X and the new version. How long have you had Mavericks installed on your MacBook Pro?
Before you upgraded to Mavericks, did you ensure that all of your installed third-party apps are compatible with Mavericks? It might be the case that such an app that runs in the background does not work well with Mavericks, and could require updating itself to work well under Mavericks.
If you haven’t done so already, download and install EtreCheck. Please include in your reply the output from a run of EtreCheck.

  • Macbook pro running slow with loud fan

    Hi,
I have my macbook pro for about 2 years now, and in the last couple of months it started running slow, and the fan gets really loud even immediately after startup.
I ran the disk utility, clean my mac, and disk inventory, and I deleted large files. I have about 35GB free (out of 250GB). I use CS5 and Parallels Desktop, which I thought were the reason for making it so slow, but I usually quit whenever I'm not using them.
I checked the console and I found repeating messages about Chrome. It's the one application that's always open... so I guess it might have something to do with it..?
    Here's the message:

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your drive is still pretty full so that could still be a factor. You want 15%-20% free space for the OS to work well.
Open Activity Monitor and see if you have some process hogging the CPU. Be sure to select "All Processes" at the top. If you find a rogue process that is doing that, see if you can quit it. It may even be Chrome, and if it is, quit it and relaunch it. If it does the same thing again, you may want to trash it and reinstall it fresh.
    Good luck!
