Macpro  s l   o    w     d      o       w        n

Hey fellows, I have a Mac Pro 3 Ghz with 8 Gig of Ram and a nVidea GE force 7300 running dual 22 inch monitors, one samsung and one dell and using the expanded desktop option. Now on to the slow down issues. I have about 24- average resolution 640 x 480 security cameras running into this machine at work and recording all the time, and set up on one display for monitoring. recently the computer started slowing down, no new cameras have been added recently and no configuration options have changed. The mouse will start dragging and skipping (new batteries) and browser and other windows will be slow to open. Any idea what is causing the slowdown?

I have not tried removing camera's because the system has been working fine until a couple of days ago when all this started. What I have done to mitigate the slowdown has worked so far, which is closing some of the camera viewing windows, they are still recording, just not being under continuos observation. as to the activity monitor I am averaging using about 50% of the 8 Gb of ram in the machine and about 40% of the processing power peak consumption is a little higher on cpu usage, but has never exceed 60%. The cameras only record on motion detection. The software is Ben Birds Security Spy. I have about 2Tb of hard disk and usually have about half free space it is on a cycle to delete files older than 15 days. The system is still being expanded and when finished will have quite a few additional camera's, that is if we get the slowdown fixed. Current frame rates are set automatically and fluctuate between 6 and 9 fps per camera. I do not have a wired mouse to try and there are limited access to the raid drive unless I am reviewing camera footage, and lastly it is a 4 core machine. I hope I answered all your questions.

  • Apple dvi to video adapter for macpro working?

    hallo,
is it possible to use the adapter for the geforce 7300 in the macpro for pal video output? will it work? the apple store lists the adapter only for g5 and mini, but i see no reason, why it shoud not work with the gforce...
    any idea? thank you.
    thomas
    macpro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have wondered about that G5 support since others have had bad luck with Nvidia boards and the video adapter. e.g. it doesn't work with the 7800GT, which is a G5 board. All current ATI cards on their web-site show support for it but the MacPro card is not on ATI's site.
The adapter seems to have disappeared from the displays section of the Apple Store.
Another option is a VGA to video adapter
    <http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/PC-TVvideoadapter.html>
It costs more, but does a lot more, and should work with any video card.

  • Hitachi drives hum in MacPro?

I just got a refurbed MacPro with the stock 250GB hard drive and so I ordered 2x500GB Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 drives from zipzoomfly.com (1.25TB total) The drives arrived today and so I went and installed them (very easy in the MacPro)
Upon boot up, I noticed a really nasty "clicking" noise and thought "oh no", the machine never fully booted, I even got the circle w/ a line through it. So I shut it down and removed one of the drive trays and figured out which one of the drives was clicking.
So, with the other drive still in place, I booted again and this time it came up and wanted me to initialize it so all is well... but the thing is that it seems to "hum" quite a bit. Overall, it's much louder than with just the 250GB boot drive installed, I was wondering is this "hum" normal on a MacPro? I can kind of understand it because the case is aluminum, but I'm surprised at how it cycles the hum. It's like it'll hum, then it'll be quiet, then it'll hum again and so on.
I have another Hitachi 7k500 in my PC and it doesn't make any noise...
    What do you think?
    G5 Dual 1.8GHz 1GB RAM Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    MacPro Quad-core 2.66GHz, 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

A couple other people have taken similar measures. I bought a 10K Raptor last Sept that makes the case hum and vibrate. Bought a new one, doesn't do it.
I have two WD Caviar SE16s that are so quiet you don't know they are there. But a Maxtor MaxLine Pro sounds like some old big SCSI drive from centuries past churning away. But no case issue.
Sometimes making sure to tighten those bolts and firmly insert the drive is all that is needed. For months I had mine on its side rather than upright and the noise and hum was abated.
I like to take some tools to loosen up and break a drive in at first. Just zero the drive to insure all is well and scan all the blocks. Or use Speedtools to test media and performance.

  • 10.6.8 MacPro Bluetooth stuttering

    Problem description:
After upgrading to 10.6.8 and after some minutes working I realized my keyboard input was faster than the text appearance on screen. Sometimes I push a key on the keyboard and three or more times the letter appears on screen. Then I noticed the mouse movement on screen was stuttering, not constantly, but sometimes more, sometimes less; but no serious work possible. If I switch off Bluetooth and switch it back on, I have a few minutes for normal behavior of my Magic Mouse and keyboard, but then same problem again. Urgh.
    What I've done so far:
    - Repaired permissions
    - Deleted both devices from the list of known Bluetooth devices and registered them again
    - Deleted the bluetooth.plist
    - Reset the PRAM
    - Reset the SMC
    - Installed the Combo Update for 10.6.8
    - Switched the channel of my Wireless base station (tried every single possible channel)

    Hi Sven,
I guess I found a solution that works (so far...):
    - deinstall all your blouetooth devices
    - delete everything saying bluetooth in library/preferences
    - reinstall 10.6.8 as combo update
    - reinstall your bluetooth devices.
    Best,
    Björn

  • Cannot get MacPro to allow me to boot to an alternative boot disk. Can choose in control panel but will not use the disk to boot. Also won't boot using disk selected using option key

My primary boot disk is encrypted as is a secondary boot disk (backup) but I cannot boot using any other disk. System 10.8.5, MacPro 4.1.
All disks mount using primary boot disk. All disks check out as OK and I have repaired permissions.
When I choose in the control panel the Mac boots but will always use my original boot disk.
When I select the disk using the option key at startup, the boot process stalls with a grey screen and a spinning cursor.
    Thanks,
    Dave

Still trying to figure this out. I erased the drive, did a format using disk util and then re-installed the system but I still cannot get the disk used as a startup drive. I also tried an external firewire drive and it won't allow me to boot from it either.
I can choose it starting up with the option key but it just gives me a blue screen and the spinning cursor.
If I select it in the startup pref pane it boots into my other startup drive only.

  • About to purchase a MacPro trying to figure out if i need the Westmere Dual Processors or say the single processor 3.32 ghz w/3gb RAM? This is for the electronic prepress department of a printing company. Mainly we need to have multiple apps. running

Will be using applications all at once like Quark ,CS5... Indesign, photshop, AI...etc.
Will be exporting and writing PDF's and Postsript files constantly along with a few networked servers.
Just a lot of application work!
Right now the department has 5 Macs 4 of them are the older PowerPC's and one is a 2008 or 2009  MacPro 2.8ghz QuadCore (singleprocesser) which is by far the fastest machine. Now we need another one or maybe two more but would like to be even faster than the MacPro we have but not go over the 3,000 mark for price.

buy 2,8 4-core and upgrade to W3680 yourself. sell the 2.8 or keep it as backup. Very affordable 6-core, or just spring for the fastest single cpu BTO.
Invest in 8GB DIMMs (4 x 8GB) and SSD - 3rd party RAM, 3GB is enough to boot, period.
Wait for SATA3, more bandwidth, Sandy Bridge E Xeons.

  • MacPro Startup Stalls-then boots to wrong drive

Greetings! I am stumped. My trusty MacPro (dual 3ghz-quadcore) has started to exhibit strange behavior on startup. A few days ago the startup was interupted by what I thought sounded like a failing drive (hic-pause-hic), so I did a fresh install of Lion on another internal drive to head off disaster. That was fine for a few days, but now things have taken a mysterious turn for the worse.
Once the start button is pressed, I get the led light on the button, the monitor shows white/grey the fans spin up and then stop, and then it just sits there, silent. Here's the weird thing... after waiting and watching that white screen for almost 20 minutes, it suddenly booted into my former Snow Leopard drive and started fine.
I am unable to influence the startup in any way. That is, I can't start in single-user mode or select the startup disk by using keyboard commands since the startup is effectively stalled on that white screen.
I have reset the SMC, unplugged an external esata card and did a dust removal. But, since the computer does not respond to startup keyboard commands, I'm not sure how to proceed further.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'd be very grateful for any suggestions on how to pin down the issue.

I wish Apple Support and Knowledge Base (Tech notes and articles) were easy to use.
Lion has Recovery mode - that is available at startup.
Command + R gets you there and best and maybe only way to repair a disk directory.
You never want to repair a drive with anything older than what you run.
So learn to find a way to use CMD - R and also to CLONE your system
Other commands at startup, Safe Mode (Shift), Single Usere (S) and Verbose (V)
TimeMachine backup - 2TB WD Green
Clone the system drive - WD Black 1.5TB $107 also makes a nice fast boot drive if you aren't ready for $200 120GB SSD

  • Mail rules not copied to new MacPro via iCloud

    Hi All,
I have a new MacPro that is replacing an older MacPro that was running Mavericks 10.9.5.  I also have a Macbook Air running Mavericks 10.9.5.
For a host of reasons, I decided not to simply use Migration Assistant on this new MacPro, but to copy individual plist files for apps such as Mail.  The two plists that I was interested in recreating on this new setup were the MessageRules plist and the SmartFolders plist.  Interestingly these two kinds of preferences seem to be shared across MacOS devices via iCloud.
However, in both instances (iCloud syncing or manually copying over the old plist file), I cannot get my install of Apple Mail to read the plists.  Nor are the shared preferences shared with this computer.  Apple tech support was not much help saying their hands are tied because of Apple Engineering.  Never heard that one before.
Thanks in advance to whomever can spare me from having to manually recreate a hundred or so rules and 20 or so smart mailboxes.

The messages coming to mail app. on my iMac & macbook pro were not showing up on my 5 devices if the sender had a "move to" a folder command on the 'rules' in Mail 'Preferences'.
After trying every suggestion I could find on this forum in addition to some of my own, I realized the only thing that worked was my changing the "move to" command  to "copy to" command. This work around resulted in duplicating all the emails, one in the "inbox" and the "copied" one to it's proper folder ! When I proceeded to delete the emails from the "inbox" as I had set up the "copy to" rule and they were all in their proper folders. I came across another change to the mail system after iOS 8.1 ; if one deletes the emails in the "inbox" on the mac they get deleted across the board from all your devices and vice versa !! I was on telephone with Apple "Senior" techs for 2 frustrating days and eventually they said there is nothing they can do, it had been changed by the "Engineers", something to do with changing "pop" to "imap" protocol. Now I have to put up with all my email being in the inbox  with no option to organize them or delete them if I want them to appear on my devices. This is outrageous !!

  • Problems of MacPro 2010 Mixing 2gb & 1gb memory together

Actually my MacPro 2010 12-core was running 8x1gb sticks before.
I just got 4 of 2gb sticks memory from a friend today.
And I do have problem mixing them with the original 1gb sticks.
Only plug 2gb sticks in Slot 1,2,5,6 - No Problem
    When I have 2 x 2gb sticks in Slot 1&2, 2 x 1gb sticks in Slot 5&6 - Still No problem
However, when I have more them 4 sticks installed in the system, no matter when the combination is(sure I'm talking mixing 1&2gb sticks together), the MacPro just don't can't start and keep the front LED flashing.
So I just want to know anything I did wrong? Is that tri-channel can't run with mixing size of memory?
I know that's not good to mixing the memory in MacPro, I just want to know the reason behind(why it doesn't work), any advice?
    p.s. 1gb module 1Rx8, 2gb module 1Rx4 (<- would it be the main reason?)

    thanks for the advice
Both 1 & 2gb sticks are 1333 ECC, the only different thing is "Brand & Size" and "Organization", the original apple 1gb is 1Rx8, and the 2gb is 1Rx4. I heart that different organization mixing together will have a huge chance doesn't work properly, and I guess I'm having this issue right now, haha
I work on CS5 a lot, however 12-core is overkill for everything...I could do anything while I'm rendering the CS5 stuff, so I don't really need more than 16gb RAM to make it faster(for CS5) at this moment, but larger than 8gb should be way better.
The reason I try to mix them up(I know mixing is always fail), is just want to find out if it works or not, if it works, then it should be a bonus, since I can get them with a low price, and if it doesn't work, I can just give it back.
    I just wanna make sure
*those RAM won't hurt my system(if it doesn't work properly with MacPro), and how can I make sure it?
*if I got no choice, I might get 8 sticks of those 2gb(since the price is really cheap) and sell all the 1gb sticks(if those 2gb RAM is no problem)
*Ideal for me is upgrade 4 sticks at a time, like 4x1 & 4x2, then 4x2 4x4, etc.. but I guess this wouldn't work...

  • My iPhone 4s iOS 7.0.4 will not update music or apps from iTunes 11.1.3.  this was true of my pc and the new MacPro.

My iphone 4s ios 7/0/4 will not update music or apps from itunes 11.1.3.  this was true with my pc since ios 7.0.3 even with update 7.0.4 and now continues with my new MacPro also runing itunes 11.1.3.   as most state in previous threads, syncs all non itunes related data with no issue and appears to work correctly on itunes data but then hangs on the last step of updating until it times out.  i have tried marking specific music to transfer, setting up new playlist, deleting some old playlist on phone but stopped short of restoring my phone back to new due to the amount of non itunes data that i will lose.  The itunes setup on the macpro was completely with the download of all music from a previous external backup and the creation of new playlist - on the first sync with existing phone it did ask to overwrite all phone itunes data with macpro itunes data which i did accept - no different result - no changes on phone.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the problem continues, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

  • New Airport Extreme not working with my Quad Macpro

    Hi all-
My Linksys 902.11b router finally died and our household is now completely Mac-based (all with Airport Extreme cards), so I decided to take the plunge and get an Airport Extreme.
2 of the machines on my home's network are doing fine with the router and are getting good speeds - iMac Dual 2.4 (10.5.1) - Both the wired and wireless connections are solid with this machine / Macbook Dual 2.0 (10.5.1) - Both the wired and wireless connections are solid with this machine as well.
I have a Macpro Quad 2.66 machine running 10.4.11. I cannot upgrade to 10.5 yet on this machine since it's being used in my recording studio business and there are known issues with some of my apps and 10.5 at the moment.
The Quad can see the network and has seemingly strong signal from the Airport Extreme BS, but DHCP reception is inconsistent (the machine often eds up using a self-assigned IP for some reason) and IP connectivity in general is inconsistent, even when an appropriate static LAN IP is manually setup. I can often get to a few webpages while using a manually config'd IP, but only with very slow DL speeds and then the connection quickly disappears and drops out entirely.
The AExtreme is setup like this: DSL Modem-->Airport Extreme (config'd with a static IP from my ISP) -->DHCP broadcast dummy IP's to my network. Currently I've not setup any security since I'm in the process of troubleshooting and I don't want to further complicate the situation. Radio-mode on the AExtreme is set to 802.11n (b/g compatible)/Channel 1. I've tried numerous config setups on the AExtreme, but none have helped the situation.
I've also disabled IPv6 on all clients per some reading on the forums of possible issues.
Anyone know what the problem might be? Is it perhaps an issue because the Macpro's using 10.4.11?
FYI, I've also also got an extra Airport Express around that's not being used that could be used as a repeater/wired connection downstairs if broadcast strength is the issue, which seems somewhat unlikely to me. I'm not sure how to config the AExpress to work in this capacity though, so if anyone could point me to a tutorial I'd appreciate it very much.
    Thanks in advance.
    Lee

I just did some more testing using an app mentioned here on the forums, iStumbler. The app offered these details:
    - Signal Strength is between 45%-56%
    - Noise is between 24%-41%
    - Freq = 2412
    - No websites load despite it's seeing the router and saying we've joined it.
I also did a screen capture of the iStumbler's screen in case that's helpful. There were several bits of info I wasn't sure about.
    Here's the screen grab: http://www.pbase.com/infiniteposse/image/91793322/original

  • Has anyone in this Forum had problems with installing and running Adobe apps on the new MacPro?

Has anyone in this Forum had problems with installing and running Adobe apps on the new MacPro?
I have been trying to install Photoshop CS6 & CC and Acrobat Pro XI on my Mac Pro (late 2013). I keep getting a 'configuration' error message and wondered if the problem was wide spread.
    TIA,
    Jerry

    Thanks, Martin.
Good to hear someone has had success. The lack of it here is frustrating and depressing.
    Thanks again,

  • DVI to video MacPro with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 120

    Hi All
I am currently trying to connect an external projector to create a second desktop.
I have tried using the DVI to Video adapter, but this doesn't seem to work. The adapter works fine with macbook pro though.
Is it something to do with the graphics card being a NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, and not a ATI X1900 XT - which seems to be what is suggested under the product description in the apple store?
If this is the case, what cable will allow me to create a video (preferably a composite) out from the DVI connector on the back of this MacPro.
The MacPro has one DVI video out and one MiniDisplay out. The monitor is using the MiniDisplay port out and I would prefer to not convert this i.e. DVI to a mini Display out for the monitor, and then use a MiniDisplay port as the video out for the projector - attaching some kind of MiniDP to video adapter. Although I don't know if that is possible.
Any suggestions as to the best solutions are much appreciated.
    Neil

Conversion of the signals provided on a DVD-I connector to Composite Video and/or S-Video requires some circuitry in the adapter. To support that, the DVI port would have to supply power. My suspicion is that only the X1900 does this, but some research may determine whether your GT120 supplies power or not.
VGA requires no additional circuitry, because the VGA signals are present at the end of the connector, in the bar and four pins directly around it.

  • Can I connect my old Studio Display to my MacPro Tower as a second monitor?

I'd like to hook my old Apple Studio Display (Clear body) to my MacPro tower and use it for my Pallets in PShop. Can anyone tell me the cable(s) I need to convert the studio display to the MacPro monitor port?
    Any idea on pricing?

Nevermind. I figured it out. I need the $100.00 adapter.

  • Acrylic 20" Cinema Display with new MacPro

As I read the posts here, to use the old cinema display with an ADC connector I will need to buy Apple DVI to ADC adapter to connect my 20" cinema display with ADC to the new MacPro?
This new DVI to ADC adapter provides power for the cinema display as I understand which is why it's so expensive whereas when cinema display was connected to my Powermac G5 the power came thru the ADC connection?
    Is this correct?
