MacPro Slow

Hey,
for some reason my MacPro has started becoming very slow and unresponsive. i.e. I'll be typing a web address in Safari and the letters wont show up for a few seconds... I'm getting the spinning beachball on opening apps, sometimes lasting for up to 30 seconds... putting the computer to sleep and it wont for about 30 seconds also... having to force quit apps when they are unresponsive... just silly things that are really frustrating.
If anyone can offer some advice to fix this, it would be much appreciated.
Alex

Run Disk Repair, you need to boot from another drive, then run Disk Warrior. And clean out cache files etc.
Make sure there aren't disk directory problems before you ADD files to your system.
And make sure you clone and backup your system and have a 2nd boot drive.

my macpro is slowing down.. it loads slower that i cant even access facebook

    Clone the system with SuperDuper
    Repair the clone
Do a Safe Boot and then a normal restart
    System maintenance and backups.
Too often people with laptop think this forum is for them, it is for workstation though.,
It is hard to imagine a workstation with 4 or more cores and even a paltry 2GB RAM being slow unless it isn't maintained.
Reading page outs, free space, free memory.....
Of course everyone expects or doesn't know what to include, what they will be asked, so we play 20 questions to figure out why,. And know what? there are literraly 1000+ threads in OS System Software forums of the same nature, over and over with much the same 'tips' and such. And I'd say laptops are most frequent to have slow systems. Mayhbe not always.

  • Disillusioned Mac User - MacPro Slow to wake up since Lion

Oh boy, am I disillusioned with Apple these days!
I'm a video editor and have loyally and enthusiastically used Macs and Mac Software for at least eight years. Now I'm struggling with the new Final Cut Pro X which Apple launched way before the bugs were ironed out - and don't seem interested in, or able to put right.
Since upgrading to Lion, my MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon has never been the same. I complained previously that with Leopard (I think) the thing wouldn't actually stop whirring, when put to sleep, but now it's gone from the sublime to the ridiculous - it takes longer to wake up than it takes to boot up. I might just as well shut it down whenever I take a short break.
When the Mac's asleep, if I click the mouse, the screen appears normally, but if I try to open any application, such as Mail, I get the beachball of doom for a few moments and then everything's on hold until it finally gets its act together and works.
Before I do yet another HD wipe and fresh install, can anyone shine a light into this ever-dimming tunnel of faith in Apple products?

Funnily enough, this is what I frequently tell distressed FCP X users over in the discussion group there! This is usually in an effort to identify corrupted video or audio files though.
Little things like watching your system with Activity Monitor to find out what is going on when  it is running slowly.
When I first read your suggestion, I thought it was off the mark - how was I to start Activity Monitor when the Mac is asleep and won't wake up?
I decided to launch Activity Monitor and then sleep the Mac. On putting the Mac to sleep, CPU usage was 99.5% idle.
To my amazement, AM was still working when I clicked the mouse to wake the Mac. I got the beachball and nothing else would work but AM reported - "Finder not responding" (in a red font).
    CPU usage was 99.4% idle.
Not sure where this leads me though - "fresh install, anyone?"

  • Raid 1 on MacPro - slow and SMB

Genius at the Apple store said using Raid 1 on a MacPro would explain why SMB is s-l-o-w. Have one user running database files off a PC. When we had it on Panther (not RAID) - the speed was fine. We upgraded to Leopard and new hardware and the speed is awful.
If we go back to a single drive and skip the Raid1 will we get the speed back? Would new Raid 5 hardware separate from the MacPro be a better solution?

    Hi danieljackson;
It sounds like you have a good plan there.
I just want to check to be sure. You would not believe how many times I have had to explain this to people that RAID 0 is not a valid backup solution and that includes some who call themselves IT professionals.

  • 8Core MacPro slow to open files into Photoshop

    Machine Spec: 8Core - 9gb Ram - 2x750gb - 1900XT. (brand new machine)
    Running Photoshop (CS2 9.02)
opening 112.3mb (8-14mb jpegs) and resaving them in a batch 8Core will average 6-7 seconds each.
    Machine Spec: 1.8Ghz G5 - 4mb RAM - 2 x 160gb. (over 4 years old)
    Running Photoshop (CS2 9.02)
opening 112.3mb (8-14mb jpegs) and resaving them in a batch 8Core will average 7-8 seconds each.
can anyone tell me why 8core is so slow?

The only other factor is the performance of Seagate drives in Mac Pro. Some report slow random small file reads etc. Later units (Mac Pro) may have an improved SATA chipset, but maybe not everyone. Great drive for large file sustained I/O though.
For me, I can't cut my attachment to WD 10K Raptors. Excellent boot drive and where you keep the OS and applications to 75GB or so (and keep data files away from your boot drive!)
Optimizing disk drives for CS2 helps. Dedicated boot drive, separate fast drive for scratch, and another for data and media.
The Mac Pro takes off working with large files where it helps more to have large amount of RAM used for caching.

  • MacPro slow after waking from sleep

I don't know if this has been asked before, but my MacPro (2 GHz, 2 GB RAM-BTO) gets very sluggish after awakening from sleep. After a restart, everything is pretty good and normal. Any ideas what is going on?
I do have spotlight on and everything checked. I'm not sure how to see if it is indexing during those times.
I used to think it was related to my EyeTV 200, but I've switched it to my Mac Mini and I still get the same problem.
    Thanks for any ideas/help.

Many third party devices are not familiar with the low power mode coming out of sleep. Some have even had their Macs not wake up coming out of sleep when certain third party devices are hooked up. I'd check this with just an Apple keyboard and mouse to make sure it isn't a preference file that is corrupt.

  • MacPro slows down as adding external FW drives ?

Is it me or my Mac is now slower ? I have one additional 500GB internal drive plus 3 LaCie and one WD external FW Drives and My MAc is sort of "sleepy". I have a feeling that the additional drives are the culprits but what can I do to improve this situation? Thanks.

I would assume trying w/o the 4 FW units would be first off.
Issues with both makes get mentioned from time to time.
Even a bad cable can be problem, or daisy-chaining.
What are those drives doing? going to sleep? used sporadically? latest firmware from LaCie? LaCie FW/USB/eSATA enclosures also have slower than expected performance.
I've run with 4 OWC Mercury FW800 drives, along with 8 external SATA drives running on Sonnet controllers.

If it was me, I would be using a 500GB SSD boot drive, or 250GB ($119)
Old rule "Less is more" and if you want a production system to run fast and be rock solid, avoid anything not essential. Might want an alternate user accounts or even dual boot or run some stuff in an OS X VM.
I would rearrange the memory and add more: 3 x 4GB on one bank and gradually upgrade bank B to same.
Finally, upgrade to 8-core 3.2GHz or higher
Did everything run better with Mavericks? Did you keep it on a clone?
Did you upgrade in place or do a clean install? those often have different outcomes.
A 5,1 should flatten any bumps easily and perform very very well. Different configurations for Adobe vs FCP-X and others.

  • Slow down when using SHARE function?

Whenever I use the share feature to wirelessly transfer files from my Mac Air to my Macpro everything on my macpro slows down. the mouse moves slow- windows take forever to respond- or just will not close at all. I tried switching my wireless mouse to a wire and same issue. Shouldn't the transfer be a background task? Why is it effecting the overall performance of the machine?

Your explanation makes sense; I had not considered the output size because I thought that the application would make all the necessary adjustments to the size I chose.
I was not able to find the square pixel reference (below is the advanced area) but I did resolve the issue. At first I changed the output to be 400 x 300, and while the bars still existed, they were greatly reduced. So I took a screen capture and in Photoshop measured the height of the remaining top bar at 3 pixels. So, I reduced my height in PrE7 by a total of 6 pixels to 294 and that completely corrected the issue. Thanks for your help on this.

  • Expanding my Quad core 'old" MacPro to 8 Core

I've been searching around since Dec 07, soon after I bought my new MacPro Quad to find out what is available to upgrade it to an 8 core.. and this is before they announced the new MacPro 8 core a month after I bought my Quad MacPro. (sigh)
I remember seeing somewhere at the time that the old MacPro could be had in a 4 or 8 core.. but now I am unable to find any info..
The questions are: (If you have a url that explains all this, much appreciated)
    (A) Can I upgrade my old new MacPro to 8 core (I do a lot of video and photo work.)I'm finding my MacPro slower than my Quad core PC doing the same tasks.
    (B) If yes, what are the CPU options, and where to find them?!
I don't game at all with this MacPro, but want to be able to do my video work in a much faster manner..
yes, kinda ***** this all came out at the same time of the new MacPro announcements but whachagonnado?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers

hi Hatter, trying to follow where you're pointing with this.. My RAID10 setup is the two drives striped and two drives mirroring the striped drives.. which gives me the 1 Tb space.. I don't use a scratch disk or do backups.. nothing to back up to be honest.. The little video work I've done thus far indicate no probs with the captures, or the editing as far as not using a scratch disk. The first time I tried a scratch disk on USB it pooched the drive so I had to reformat it.. (not knowing you actually had to "eject" a drive before pulling the plug..)
I think I might have done it with a slightly different set up if I had to do it again.. I don't know if this would work or would make any sense but I think I'd have a stand alone boot disk, and a backup disk for the boot drive (mirroring) and stripe the other two drives for capturing and editing videos.. (is this what you meant in your 2nd para?)
However, right now I'm just starting to work with the mac and learning my way through.. All funs and giggles till someone loses an eye.. ; )
Note: you're not missing anything with Vista.. I've downgraded a recently new laptop that came with Vista to XP.. now it's more useable and faster.. and didn't cost me anything. MS has a setup that allows you to transport your Vista licence to an XP OS installation.. but there's a catch.. If you have Vista Biz, you can only do this with XP Pro.. so find someone else's disk, but use your Vista licence. Nice. But I digress.
    Cheers M8

  • Fake desktop (so I can store information in it)?

    Hi All,
I'd really like to have a desktop like space (maybe one that I can toggle to somehow) where I can store current projects that I am working on. I find it really a bump in the road to have to look at these in a normal Finder window.
At the same time about a year into moving to mac, I realized that my MacPro slows to a crawl (literally) when I put too much data on the desktop.
Is there a really easy way to do this? If it involves Expose or Spaces can anyone point me to a down and dirty explanation to get this going?
    Thanks
    Jonathan

    Hi Thomas.
    Thanks for the help.
Can you help me with what you mean by too many open windows? I'm coming from a PC environment and my MacPro has in the past "churned" (the hard drive sounds like it is being read) and I think I finally isolated this to folders on the desktop with a large amount of information.
You are saying that the /amount/ of information or the amount of files in a folder on the desktop is not an issue it is the /number/ of folders - because these are open windows?
What is the issue with open windows on Mac?
Also, does this also apply to open software? I mean, at what point do I start to think about closing software? Say I have Pages, Numbers, Safari and four or five other software open. Is this an issue?
Lastly, I have a hard time understanding how this all works. Can you explain it a little more? I can't figure out if you are talking just plain old Finder windows here or if you are using something special. "Project based folders that can be open in each relevant space..."? What is the relevant space? I'm a little confused on how to rethink all this...
but you may also wish to have project-based folders that can be open in each relevant space so that items for the project you're working on are all filed away in the right place as you work on them. My personal work style usually involves two windows in column view, tiled one above the other. This allows very quick access to what I need as well as access to one side of the desktop for a short-term repository for things that are temporary or that I haven't figured out where to file.
    Thanks again...

  • Seagate Barracuda ES ST3750640NS 750 GB - slow random access in MacPro

I installed four Seagate Barracuda ES ST3750640NS 750 GB disks in my MacPro (5GB RAM). They are mounted as two RAID-1 arrays (mirrored, no speed up).
It seems that also those (not just the non-ES, …AS version) suffers from slow speeds (<1MB) in random access with small blocks. How much this is representative of typical access with Mac OS X I cannot tell, but still this looks like some kind of incompatibility of the drives' firmware with a MacPro.
Does anyone have experience on how to correct that?

All of the Seagate 7200.10 model hard drives have slow Random Read performance. None of the different model numbers change this fact. There is no fix for this and you will probably only notice this issue when opening a large library with Aperture or some other application that depends on a large number of small files to read.
The Randowm write performance of the Seagate 7200.10 models is actually very good. In addition, the large block copy capabilities of the 7200.10 models is exceptional.
Xbench tests make the Seagate 7200.10 model performance look much worse than it actually is.

  • Need Help: Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 Slow Performance on MacPro

We installed Adobe Acrobat pro as part of Design premium on MACPRO twelve Core 2.93 with 10GB Memory and 27inch Display running OS 10.8.4
We opened high resolution pdf file 170MB with 330pages with 300% Zoom, when we scrolled trough the pages, the respond is very slow and sluggish. We Zoom in to 100%, scrolling still sluggish.
We try to reseat the memory, repair permission,  reset PRAM and the problem still the same.
    Can you help me?

In all truth 170mb is pretty big for a PDF. Even with a rockin' setup like that, it's about the equivalent of 30 copies of Atlas Shrugged (891 pages). Being high res, and that size, it's not a "quick" file. My mini has 4Gb and a Core i5, I'm pretty sure it would drag on it.

  • MBP to MacPro Network Connection Deadly Slow

I recently purchased an Intel MBP, and am connected to my home network wirelesly via a Belkin N1 router. Connecting to the Internet works just fine: speed is good, connection is strong, etc.
But connecting to shared drives over my home network - specifically, those on my MacPro - has become deadly slow. It can take hours to transfer files of a few MBytes. The MacPro is connected to the network via Ethernet. It has four full drive bays. The Internet performance (e.g., web browsing) on the MacPro is fine.
I previously has a PowerBook G4, and it did not have this problem - network speeds worked fine. It's only after I moved to the MBP that this started.
This problem occurs even if a connect the MBP to the network with an Ethernet cable.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    William:
I've got DHCP turned on in the Belkin, so it's handing out IP addresses. The router does connect to a switch, and I haven't tried a different port on the switch, or resetting it, but I will.
One other thing to note - I have a Mac Mini as well; the Mini runs wirelessly. The connection from the MBP to the Mini has slowed down as well.
I was going to pick up an Airport Express router this afternoon and try it. If nothing else, I'll have a nice collection of Apple hardware...
    Thanks for the feedback.
