Macpro sluggish

I purchased a MACPRO in 2006... dual core Intel Xeon 3 ghz processors... upgraded from tiger to snow leopard recently... seemed fine.... couple months later mac feels sluggish... checked service provider... BTW I'm on a Apple airport wireless router... service provider says everything is ok..replaced modem... signal strength is maxed out... Apple care says it's interference... I live in an area where no other devices are found by my airport...cordless phones have been in the house for at least two years...lots of hard drive space... even applications seem slower i.e logic seems to struggle where it did not in the past... safari has delays when loading pages as i flip from website to website... how can I check that all processors are functioning? do I have a virus? am I going crazy? MACPRO does not seem itself.. BTW my iphone 3g is now pretty much useless... why does it seem like you need to buy new stuff every couple of years UUUURRRGGGGGG !!!!

It doesn't matter where the boot drive is, but it does help if you would upgrade the drive to newer; or reinitialize and clone to a drive. And use Disk Warrior for sure.
4GB is almost qualifies as starvation diet though.
Last resort: swap processors for dual quad X5365s, seem hard enough to find on ebay, Mac pro still fetches $1100 as runs Tiger and people sometimes want a minisize workstation that doesn't cost a bundle.
A good investment by now is SSD boot drive, ATI 5770 perhaps too.
But cloning the drive, is a good idea to clean things up, optimize and consolidate free space, and rebuilding the directory. And maybe 4 x 2GB RAM?

  • 10.6.8- since update both Macpro and Mac Air very sluggish. How do i fix?

Both computers are sluggish- so I have to assume it was something with the update which I did at the same time.
Web pages take very long to open and apps hang on launch.
    Anyone else?
I tried Snow leopard cleaner and repair permissions.

Try turning off the router for 5 minutes, shut down the Macs, turn the router back on, restart the Macs.
    For your apps...
Try starting  up in Safe Mode on both Macs. A Safe Mode boot takes longer then a normal boot. After you are in Safe Mode click the Apple menu icon top left in the screen then click: Restart.

  • Mighty mouse - tracking sluggish w/ new MacPro

Set up a new MacPro w/ AirPort and BT with the Apple BT KB and Mighty Mouse. Arrived with dead batteries. With fresh batteries in my office mouse tracked fine. At new location, tracking now unusable. MacPro doesn't seem to support ext antenna for AP or BT, so is there any possible remedy for this poor signal/tracking?
    MacPro 2x2.6GHz, 4GB ram, Radeon X1900, 2x500GB SATA HD. MacOS X 10.4.8.
    Thanks

    Dear poor friend,
I am facing the same very problem here. It started last monday when I updated the OS and the system requested to restart. I restarted it and then Voala!!! My Magic mouse stopped tracking. Like you I can scroll, click, perform some gestures... but thats all.
I still have 8 months of warranty and as I discussed with "Apple Care Specialist" I should reinstall the Mac OS X overlapping the current system. I did that and nothing..... Then he recomnended me to take my mac to a service center.
I live in Brazil and here the Service Center system is always down. I tried to take my MacPro there three times (iPlace in Shopping Ibirapuera) and I always heard that the system was down and they didnt even try to check it.
So I called the Apple Care Again, this time the Super Advanced Specialist told me to FORMAT my disk and reinstall the system once more.... I had no option and I lost everything in this process....
My mouse worked for few minutes and then..... Ta daaaa!!!... it stopped again...
Then this super Advanced Specialist said that this problem might be related to the firmware and only Service Center can give a look...
That means... DEAD END for me...
I was an apple maniac fanboy until today... I cannot accept that my mouse is not working...
APPLE, please, release a patch to fix this problem to occur again. Fix my Mac without the need to bring it to a Service Center.!!!
    Best Regards,
    Disappointed client.

  • MacPro, OS10.4.7...everything is slow. Sluggish.

I just got a new Mac Pro which came with OS10.4.7. I don't know which is doing this but everything I do seems to have a few seconds delay, sometimes longer. Especially with a Firewire 800 external drive I have connected (using 800 ports and cables). For example. I click on the icon of a hard drive. It takes 4-5 seconds before I see the contents. Likewise when clicking on a folder. Even some applications when opeing, I get a short delay, then beachball for a few seconds, then it opens. Does this have anything to do with spotlight and/or indexing? This is only my second day of use. Is it doing something behind the scenes? Can I stop it?

    Sherry,
With all due respect you simply have no idea what you're talking about. Neither the amount of RAM nor the number of populated slots will cause the computer to be sluggish. This is simply another example of the fact that you do not know the limits of your own ignorance. If you really want to be knowledgeable about this particular aspect of the Mac Pro I suggest you visit www.anandtech.com and read the articles related to the Mac Pro.
Furthermore, the type of RAM and who purchased from does not affect the computer's overall performance. The only "problem" that even Apple comments on is the possibility that RAM that does not have an adequate heat sink may increase internal heat and cause the fan to run more often and/or faster.

  • Very Very Sluggish Performance on MacPro 3GHz Dual Xeon ?

I upgraded to Snow Leopard when it was released.... at the same time my computer hard drive has started to fill up.... I have currently only 20GB left from an original 500GB HD. My computer has become so sluggish... I can hear the HD constantly crackling... and Photoshop has become a night are to you... I used to have a 60GB scratch disk... but due to two HD's being fried over electrical outages I now have to use my main HD as scratch and I won't be able to free up space until my new DROBO system arrives.
Can anyone tell me if what I'm experiencing is normal for a computer running at nearly total capacity or could this be a more sinister issue involving problem with Snow Leopard and Photoshop CS4.
    Any comments most welcome...
    Yours sincerely,

Didn't anyone tell you, or read, to keep your boot drive lean and mean and 50% free?
Or to use a UPS for your workstation and equipment?
Whether 8GB RAM is enough, or even 2 x 60GB is large enough for scratch...
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404440.html
    http://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshop-Configuration.html
    http://www.macgurus.com/guides/storageaccelguide.php
    http://homepage.mac.com/boots911/.Public/PhotoshopAccelerationBasics2.4W.pdf
Things like disabling Spotlight on scratch and boot drive, and of course having more than adequate RAM.
Using a boot drive is always bad, triple so for yours. You should NEVER use a drive with less than 10% free, even more so for a boot drive.
Good reason to have spare drives and two or more backups for everything.
When you can, superduper clone your system to a newly formatted and zeroed drive, and don't put anything on boot drive but the OS and applications. Off load everything else to media and data drive(s).
    And get a 1300-1500VA UPS.

  • Kernel Panic on MacPro 1,1.  Need help deciphering crash report.

    Hi folks!
Been having a ton of issues lately with the MacPro 1,1.  Frequent slow-downs, pinwheels, sluggish video and scrolling, especially in Safari.
Recently, I reinstalled Lion which put me back on version 5 of Safari and I've yet to update.  This didn't solve any of my problems either.Kernel
Anyway, just had a Kernel Panic and it forced me to restart.  Here's the report.  Can someone help explain what caused the panic?

You have  a Mac Pro, which uses Error Correction Code memory. That is not a memory error panic report, and you do not have a memory problem.
zalloc is the actual routine that detected the error. It is a memory allocation program which has been tested to death. It is vanishingly unlikely that you have discovered a problem in zalloc.
PluginProcess is what was running when it panic-ed. I expect that has to do with Safari plug-ins. ¿Are all the Plugins you are running now the correct versions to be running in this version of Safari?
You have many add-ons to the Mac OS X kernel:
    com.techsmith.TACC 1.0.2
    com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.6.6
    com.blackmagic-design.desktopvideo.iokit.driver 9.7.1
    com.blackmagic-design.desktopvideo.iokit.framebufferdriver 9.7.
    com.blackmagic-design.desktopvideo.iokit.decklinkhddriver 1.0.0
again, you should be certain that each is the right version for the Mac OS X you are running. If still no joy, you may need to remove them all and test with no third-party add-ons.
NOT related to your symptoms, you are running all 4GB DIMMs on the B riser, and only one pair of 2GB DIMMs on the other Riser. Optimum performance is achieved with larger modules in the lowest-numbered slots, balanced between the two risers.
That would be a pair of 4GB DIMMs in the first two slots on each riser, a pair of 2GB DIMMs in the second slots on one, and the others empty. If you can fill all slots, you get a slight boost in speed as well.

  • Mac Pro: sluggish... what's wrong?

I've got a three months old Mac Pro (Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 3 GHz, 4 GB RAM, OS X 10.4.11) and use it mainly for Adobe CS3 (InDesign, Photoshop). Before this I had a G5. I found that G5 a lot more pleasant to work with and that suprises me a LOT...! I (of course) expected a fast and swift reacting system!
The MacPro seems to have trown me back in time to those old days when the Mac OS didn't do well with memory management: after some time the computer gets slower as if memory if filled and stays filled. If things go really bad the interface of IDesign for instance, takes seconds to build up, one palet at a time. When I want to print something for the first time in any program, it takes about 6 seconds before the dialogue is there. Moving thins in InDesign becomes more and more sluggish, as if there is lag. I have to restart the computer to be able to work normal. For a while...
I really have the idea there is something wrong with my system! Strange thing is, that my colleague has the same problems...! Now both our computers were installed using an image. Maybe that doesn't work right? Is there a known problem that makes a MacPro work slow and sluggish?

I understand your frustration. Can you supply us with a little more information? When things really slow down, check the Activity Monitor and post your Page ins/Page outs (under System Memory Tab.)
I primarily use CS3 (all apps) with my Pros, my 2.66 also has 4GB RAM My 3.0 8-core has 8. Both machines in a professional environment and are extremely fast compared to the G5.
InDesign takes a little time to start up but everything else, speedwise, is 'normal' (as fast as I am.)
Did you migrate your CS3 apps from your G5 with the Migration Assistant? If you did, that would be your primary culprit.
    Let us know...
    D.
P.S. I just noticed you installed with a disk image. That is more than likely your problem, especially if the disk image was created from a PPC machine. Try re-installing CS3 following the un-install/install procedure that Adobe has posted on their website.

  • After Effects CC (2014) MacPro Performance??

I just installed the new After Effects CC (2014) on my 2013 MP with 2 D700s.  I am not noticing any significant difference from the previous version of AE.  GPUs are still showing as 2GB of VRAM (see below).  I dropped in a 5K (5120x2700) R3D clip into a 1080p comp, scaled to width and tried to move the playhead, let alone play and it is extremely sluggish (media is on a G-Raid).  Even at "low" debayer and 1/4 res I seem to max out at 20fps without ram previewing.  Mercury Transmit is off, both "Viewer Quality" options are set to "Faster".  Even with a 1080p ProResHQ file I can't get realtime playback without ram previewing.
What I can do to fix this?

    Tim,
    Thank you for the replies.
Is this to say that to simply play a quicktime video file (no effects or adjustments made) in After Effects the expected behaviour is that it must be RAM previewed?
This is how After Effects currently works. It hasn't changed in many years. You can initiate playback without RAM Preview (press spacebar), but the playback speed will depend on how fast the frames can be cached to memory for playback, and will very likely not be real-time except for the simplest of comps.
This is exactly the change that I am looking for.  In my opinion, "the simplest of comps" would be things like "a comp with a QT file and no effects/adjustments", "an Illustrator file moving in the example of a credit roll".  Hopefully this will all be improved upon in future releases.  I am looking forward to seeing them.
As per the After Effects blog post a few months ago about future improvements all that I (and I am confident that the majority of users will agree) would like to see is for After Effects to be significantly faster (think the improvement to the "search" feature in Premiere).
We also want to make After Effects faster. As I mentioned, we are currently focused on performance-related improvements to After Effects. The blog post you referenced was written while we were in the middle of developing the After Effects CC 2014 (13.0) release, and beginning to think about our next release. A side note here: performance in After Effects includes both rendering performance and interactive performance; that is, how fast After Effects allows you to work.
I will anxiously await these updates.  As a note: I feel that interactive performance is a higher priority than rendering performance.
During the CC2014 release presentation on video there were multiple references to "not waiting for renders", except this is exactly what you have to do when working in After Effects.
Can you be more specific about what context you saw this in? Can you provide a link? "Not waiting for renders" is a fairly generic statement, so context is important. It may have been used in connection with the new text templates feature in After Effects CC 2014, which allows faster workflows between Premiere Pro and After Effects, or with Dynamic Link in general. Otherwise, I need to know how that phrase was used in order to understand your perception of it.
Yes, the context was always in relation to either dynamic linking with PPro, or Direct linking betweens PPro and SpeedGrade.  However, the overall impression I got was that Adobe's goal with the video applications was to improve the interactive performance so that users can focus more on being creative and less on waiting for the software.
Could you please also address the issue of After Effects still recognizing the MacPro GPUs as having 2GB of memory instead of 12GB?
We have a bug open on this and are investigating.
Thank you.  I was really hoping that the 2014 release would fix this, but understand that it is likely quite complicated and there are many other improvements/bug fixes that the team is working on.  Are there any updates on when this expected?  Is this effecting performance or just simply the readout in After Effects' GPU information.
I greatly appreciate you taking the time to address all of these concerns and am looking forward to the continued updates to the entire CC video suite.

  • Need Help: Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 Slow Performance on MacPro

We installed Adobe Acrobat pro as part of Design premium on MACPRO twelve Core 2.93 with 10GB Memory and 27inch Display running OS 10.8.4
We opened high resolution pdf file 170MB with 330pages with 300% Zoom, when we scrolled trough the pages, the respond is very slow and sluggish. We Zoom in to 100%, scrolling still sluggish.
We try to reseat the memory, repair permission,  reset PRAM and the problem still the same.
    Can you help me?

In all truth 170mb is pretty big for a PDF. Even with a rockin' setup like that, it's about the equivalent of 30 copies of Atlas Shrugged (891 pages). Being high res, and that size, it's not a "quick" file. My mini has 4Gb and a Core i5, I'm pretty sure it would drag on it.

  • MacPro Performance Tune Up?

    Hi All.
I just got my new MacPro and after feeling the exuberance of a Christmas morning, I am now sad faced in the video performance I was expecting is just not there.
Perhaps there is a tune up process or something I am missing to configure all this mighty horsepower so the render/export times in Final Cut Express don't suck as they do...?
I am using a 2.66 GHz Quad Core Xenon
16 gigs ram and 2x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics cards
    It just blows.
A 10 minute video takes 12 minutes to render. Can that be right? I got that kind of performance on my 2 gig 1.83GHz powerbook.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

The GT120 IS low end 2D. The ATI Radeon HD 4870 as $200 BTO is a better card. The only reason for two 120's is for 3 or 4 monitors. There is no teaming or SLI/CrossFire support in Mac OS.
Maybe in the weeks or months ahead there will even be something better than the 4870s, but I'd return one or both for 4870.
As for rendering video, how many hard drives have you got installed and what are they?
Also, did you import drives or applications from PowerMac or other Mac? Doing so can result in slow and sluggish as molasses. I've seen this happen a number of times, most often with someone coming from G4/G5s.

Final Cut Express, is it optimized yet for 4-cores w/ hyper-threading? I think some have speculated it really wasn't (Compressor is).
    *COMPRESSOR 3*
The same phenomenon is observed with Compressor (which is part of Final Cut Studio). The Apple Qmaster can be create a Quick Cluster with as many instances as you have cores (or virtual cores).
Each instance is a subprocess that can grab up to 3GB each, though we've never observed it using as much memory as After Effects.
On the other hand, using all available instances doesn't always produce faster render times. *You should experiment with various instance settings to find the sweet spot* for the project you are encoding.
As you see in the graph above, we indicate the number of instances used in each case (e.g. 2i = 2 instances, etc.) Using the "Wildlife Reel" from the QuickTime HD Gallery, we encoded an "HD DVD: H.264 60min" preset. Notice that the Nehalem 2.93 rendered faster with 6 instances. Beyond that, it began to slow.

  • Motion still fragile after installing it in a MacPro

OK so we've had the FCP update so where is the Motion update. As a Pro user of this software I am very unhappy with Motion as it stands at the moment. I sent a request to Apple as I cannot use Motions keyframes anymore. This has been since I bought the MacPro and the Intel chipset. I have a 3 Ghz MacPro with 6 Gig of ram, it should be a flying machine and it's far from it...the only programme to benefit from all this power is compresser. Well I for one rejoice in the forth comming Premiere Pro for Mac due in mid summer, appart from audio conforming, Premiere Pro was streets ahead of FCP.
Apple needs a kick in the butt to get all it's apps running properly with Intel as FCP, Motion, Studio Pro and Aperture all run sluggishly in my MacPro.

Is it possible to be more specific about the
problems? You mention you can't use keyframes
anymore. What happens when you try to use them?
If I try to use keyframes I get so far then the programme quits to the desktop, no warning.
You also mention that programs are slow (aside from
compressor). What is slow, and what are some examples
    of slow-ness?
Slowness I compair to my other Macs, I have a 24" 2.16 Ghz Duo core Intel iMac (2GB ram & Nvidea 7600 GT card))which runs Aperture much faster than my MacPro ? Faster being...If I change a slider to adjust the highlights it works instantly with no delay on the MacPro I get a delay and sometimes the beach ball of death for a nano second.
My MacPro has 3Ghz Duo core, 6 GB ram, ATI Radion X1900 XT card running two 23" Apple HD displays...and in Aperture I get lesser real time responce than in my 24" iMac ???
FCP-5 I was under the impression that a lot of things turn real time the more processing power you give the programme, I can on occasions get red lines above disolves !
The main difference between my previous G5s and MacPro is the amount of beach balls I am now seing when doing simple tasks that are no problem to my previous G5.
What have you done to try and correct this? Have you
trashed preferences, reinstalled the software, tried
using a different user account, repaired persmission,
run a hardware test, or rebuilt the system?
I have repaired permissions, re-installed Motion, ran Tech tool deluxe.
We're here to help, but when your system is acting as
a the exception to the rule, it helps to have these
    kinds of details.

  • Slow Scrolling pdf file on MACPro using acrobat Pro

    Hey Guys,
I am having problem when I try to edit 300Pages PDF file on MACPRO quad core 3.2 2010 with 10GB memory running 10.8.4 with adobe acrobat pro 9.3
it's sluggish and very slow when open on 300% zoom.
I tried the same file on my MBP i5 2.4 with 8GB memory running on 10.8.4 and acrobat pro 9.3 with 300% zoom still running smoothly.
the file zise is around 178MB.
tried reset PRAM, reseating each memory, repair permission, the problem still persist..
    any advise?
    Regards
    Imam

    Thanks for responding Bernd.
I did a quick google for "Adobe LiveCycle PDF Generator" but all the links say that I can convert from PDF to "TIFF","HTML","DOC" etc...
But I want to convert an HTML file into PDF.
Will "Adobe LiveCycle PDF Generator" help me in achiving this ?
Also I wan to do this programitically using .Net C#.
Once again thanks for the reply.

  • MacPro slow after waking from sleep

I don't know if this has been asked before, but my MacPro (2 GHz, 2 GB RAM-BTO) gets very sluggish after awakening from sleep. After a restart, everything is pretty good and normal. Any ideas what is going on?
I do have spotlight on and everything checked. I'm not sure how to see if it is indexing during those times.
I used to think it was related to my EyeTV 200, but I've switched it to my Mac Mini and I still get the same problem.
    Thanks for any ideas/help.

Many third party devices are not familiar with the low power mode coming out of sleep. Some have even had their Macs not wake up coming out of sleep when certain third party devices are hooked up. I'd check this with just an Apple keyboard and mouse to make sure it isn't a preference file that is corrupt.

  • Installing an SSD drive in a MacPro

    Hello,
I just got me a 256Gig SSD drive to add to my Mid 2010 MacPro. The manufacturer (Samsung) gives no info whatsoever on how to go about installing the MacPro, what the needed tools/items would be or any other easy to find info on using/maintaining such a drive in a Mac. I know the 2 companies are not best buddies but as a consumer I feel kind of thwarted…
So any hints are warmly appreciated here!

In more than a "few" cases, lack of enabling TRIM resulted in the device performing ever slower and sluggish. I guess in such cases some type of restore would be called for, or a weekly run under Mavericks system - though I never like to run DU from prior OS especially on new OS with as many changes as Yosemite has. CCC had to be updated to be compatible.
    Using TRIM on non-Apple SSDs
    http://www.softraid.com/pages/support/compatibility_notes.html
When running Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, the SoftRAID application no longer modifies the Apple driver to enable TRIM on non-Apple SSDs.
Modifying a driver in Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite can make your Mac no longer startup.
If you are willing to take the risk of having your Mac no longer startup, you can download and install TRIM Enabler and your SoftRAID volumes will use TRIM on Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
Make sure you read the warnings about using TRIM on Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite before installing and running TRIM Enabler.
