MacPro suggestions

hello All,
I am going to be upgrading my G5 to a new MacPro and would appreciate some suggestions as to configuration. I shoot HD footage mostly DVCPRO HD and do a lot of compression for the web as well as DVD. Right now, I view footage via firewire to my Sony broadcast monitor. I realize that workflow may not be future proof since I may not always be using DVCPRO HD.
Which core, 8 or 12? Which graphics card ATI Radeon 5770 or 5870. Also, I have a CalDigit drive set up as a raid 0 for my capture scratch. That works but is there an advantage to having internal raid drives and if so, do i need that expensive Raid controller apple sells for $700??? Lots of question, I know...but it is a big purchase and I would like to hear what configs others have and what the recommendations would be. Thanks in advance.

If you click on the "Nahlem" MacPro, an upgrade option to a 6-Core 3.33Ghz if available there. A big confusing I know. Thats what we decided on. That does limit you to 16gb of RAM, we have maxed that out and find it more than enough for FCS, of which FCP can only utilise a small amount.
Forgot to mention we went for OWC Mercury SSD drives, not for cost, although they are cheaper but for reliability:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internalstorage/Mercury_Extreme_SSD_Sandforce/Solid_StatePro
With the money saved from the processor (and SSD if you don't require) the Matrox hardware is the biggest time and money saver. Real time + processing for h.264 is great for us, it isn't a graphics card as such more of a dedicated piece of hardware for interfacing with equipment such as your bc-monitor or VTR. One of the added benefits is that it handles the encoding of video along with your CPU, not GPU (graphics card).
The faster GPU enable us to work in Motion faster and with less hassle than before, if you work in Motion, or with GPU support enabled in AE or PS then go with the bigger card. If not the 5770 will be more than enough.
We went Apple internal RAID because we got a good deal including support form Apple if anything goes wrong. Sadly not used the mini, I would recommend the PCIe CompressHD for pure h264 encoding. If you want pro connectivity the LE is the starting point, the mini offers HDMI for a prosumer output.

  • Verify Macintosh HD doesn't complete???

    Hi,
I have made several attempts to with Verify Disk in Disk Utility, but it stops working at either "Checking extended attributes file" or "Checking volume information".
Is this a sign that something is work with the hard drive?
    Thanks.

I've been getting that same response since 10.9.5. It's been noted by others.  I believe it does finish the job but just doesn't recored it.  You can do what FatMac>MacPro suggests and see if the reporting is complete.

How much of a hurry are you in, and are you considering upgrading to Lion?
File Vault on Snow Leopard only encrypts home folders you select, and doesn't work well with Time Machine.
But Lion will have "full disk encryption" of local or external disks.  See File Vault 2 here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html

  • MacPro slowdown - request additional diagnostication suggestions

    Friends:
I'm diagnosing the extreme sluggishness a MacPro running 10.5.8 (2x2.26 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon with 6Gb Ram and 1066 MHz DDR3)
I ran Drive Genius 3 and Verified, Repaired, Rebuilt and Defragmented all internal drives. All reports from the application were that all is OK.
The computer runs well during the first half hour, but later it beguns to slow down. Beach Ball on almost all selections, and when you insert a flash drive it takes at least 5 minutes to show up on the desktop. When the machine is restarted all things including flash drive mount are fast as expected.
The main applications used on the Mac are Adobe Creative Suite CS5, MS Office 2008 (fully updated).
Software Update is all up to date as well.
I have even tried formatting the boot disk and reinstalling the OS and applications, but the results are the same.
Right now the only option is to restart the machine every half hour to keep working.
What would you all suggest as a next step in identifying the problem?
    Thanks for all your suggestions,
    Migs

Perhaps the mac has too many files on the desktop? (500Gb of images or so)
    Almost certainly.
Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.
Here is Apple's take on the subject:

Any suggestions to why my macpro is slowing down. Thought it might be infected, when antivirus was run, 7 virusfound and were deleted but it is still slow. Any suggestions? Thx

Start by getting rid of the "antivirus." If that doesn't solve the problem, post again.

To many different suggestions as to battery life of the MacPro. Is there one way to keep your battery life, do I keep it plugged in to AC or do I not?

To be honest, I would only plug it in when necessary. On my older 2009 MBP, I plug it in at night and it lasts me a solid 5-6 hours, if it needs to be plugged in during the day, I usually do it with about 2-3 hours left.

    Hello babichanjacob
Change how it syncs by enabling Manually manage music and videos, then you can drag and drop the music that you want on your iPhone. Revert it back to test to see if that resolves the issue.

  • MacPro- monitor suggestion

hello, i just got my new macpro and want to hook up my 2 older dell monitors with dual-link DVI connections. they work fine so i'd rather not get new monitors if possible. the question is since the macpro comes with 1 dual-link DVI and 2 Mini DisplayPort outputs. what is the best way to set up these monitors, given i have only 1 dual-link DVI port? if i get an adapter will it be as good as going with 2 new monitors that have mini-display ports? what set up do others have? thanks much.

    Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter
VGA monitors are analog. The image quality is much better on a DVI or Mini DisplayPort monitor. A decent Samsung 24" with DVI will cost aroud $250 at most. There are Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters available too.

  • 1tb HD for MacPro 1.1 - Suggestions

Anyone like to inform on the best/cheapest hasrd drive of 1tb capacity for the MacPro 1.1 model . . . ?   T.I.A.
    Ron

Western Digital isn't that bad.  What's bad is using hard drive manufacturer software.  They can make hardware, but their software leaves much to be desired.    The problem is now that all hard drive companies have bought companies that make somewhat marginal drives.  Seagate and Western Digital's original drives are great.  It is the Maxtor and IBM deskstars that could have been better, and same with the Toshiba drives.  If you can get a hard drive with at least a 3 year warranty you are better.
Amazon sells hard drives, and I would trust Amazon over anything on eBay as long as it is new.

  • MacPro 3,1 (early 2008) - upgrade suggestion for FCP X

    MacPro 3,1 (early 2008)
    2x 2.8Ghz Quad-Core
    GeForce 8800GT
    500GB (int hd) / 8GB (ram)
    10.6.8
Will be installing FCP X, Motion and Compressor to work on various video projects in coming weeks, and want to upgrade to prepare for data storage and memory.  Mostly 1080p/720p footages, motion graphics, photoshop work, etc.
Looked through OWC, and want to know if below choices are good for my needs.
    Seagate 2.0TB / SATA 6.0Gb/s / 7200RPM / 64MB Cache (x2 of these for 4TB.. for video storage)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST2000DM001/
    4.0GB OWC Memory 2x 2.0 GB Matched Set PC6400 / DDR2 ECC / 800MHz 240 pin  (x2 of these for 8GB.. so Total 16GB)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/64FB2MPK04GB/
Will these be sufficient for High Def video edits?
Are these compatibel with MacPro 3,1?
    Thanks in advance~

  • I'm looking for a color laser printer for my MacPro....what brand do you suggest me?

    Hi.
I'm in difficult to decide what brand of color laser printer to buy.
A few month ago I saw that on the apple store was sell the HP LaserJet Pro CP1525 Color Printer series, but now only multifuction printer are avaiable.
Have uou got experience with some other model?
    Thank's.
    Cristian

I would look at reviews of course. I favor Lexmark but there are others.
    Try these:
    http://printers.toptenreviews.com/laser/
    http://www.pcmag.com/reviews/laser-printers
Ink jets have come a long way, but not a replacement where laser is called for, and cost of ink is just as much as printers. Trouble with multi function is -- not all functions are always that great.
Support. Sometimes only the last  couple model years get supported drivers.
I keep paying less and getting much much better quality printers though and compared to those $10,000 units of old today's printer is cheap, fast and a joy to use.

  • I cannot open my email icon anymore on my MacPro.  Any suggestions?

My email icon on my laptop no longer works.  I can see email only from my phone now.  When I click on the icon, it doesn't move.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • I just downloaded pages to my macpro  but I can't find an icon to access it.  I verified install.  Any suggestions?

How do I find the icon for pages.  If I go to the finder it leads me to the store and pages has already been installed.  Not used to the Mac.

You did not say what version of OSX you had. I assume Lion (OSX 10.7)
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/#video-lion
There are lots of ways to start a program.
    1. Spotlight: Click on magnifying glass top right of screen, type "Pages" and hit return
    2. Click on the Launchbar icon on the dock (silver disc with rocket). If you got pages as part of iWork it will be in an iWork icon containing all 3 apps.
    3. Click on the Applications folder icon towards the right of the Dock on the bottom of the screen
    4. If you opened it before Menu > Apple > Recent Items > Pages
