MacPro to Mac Mini?

I have an existing MacPro system and considering picking up a Mac Mini in addition. My question is: is there a way to essentially duplicate my system drive from the MacPro over to the Mac Mini. That way I have all my software, OS, etc. essentially identical to my MacPro system?

If the Mini you plan to get is a new one, it won't run 10.6.8.
If all you need is a second system, you could find a 3 year old Mini which will run that OS. You could then clone the contents, other than the system, to that drive.
There are model specific tweaks in an installed OS. So the 10.6.8 installed on the MacPro drive probably would not run on a Mini. You could however, install 10.6.8 on the older Mini and migrate the rest of the stuff over from the Pro.
Be aware also that the a new Mini will not run some older applications. Power PC apps do not even open on an Intel Mac.

It is standard Mountain Lion error due to the networking ability which is comparable to wet string. (actually that was lion.. it dried out some with Mountain Lion.. higher in the hills perhaps!!)

But many people are suffering the same issue..
And the above is even a little out of date.. you might need to do a reset to the TC.

I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro(2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need topurchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

The OS disks that are shipped with a particular product
are set up so that tey will only install on that product.
It will install on any Mini of that exact vintage, but that
    is all.
This is to prevent people from doing exactly what you
are trying to do.  The license for OSX shipped with any
is only valid for that product.  Also, Snow Leopard,
including Server, is only permitted to be run on one
computer at a time.  Bottom line, unlike Lion, legally
you cannot install the same copy on multiple
computers unless some "family pack" or site license
    is purchased.
Yes, you need to purchase another copy.
The copy of Snow Leopard license is here:

  • Mac OSX 10.4 Server on a MacMini + Mac Mini Network render farm

    Hi Guys,
I am working at a small vfx post house in Bangkok. We are looking to install some sort of server and network renderfarm.
There was talk of going Windoze based when I first arrived, so I am doing my best to steer them to Mac & OSX. (Most of the current workstations are MacPros)
For a budget solution I said it may be possible to run a OSX Server on a new Mac Mini, and also create a 5-10 machine Mac Mini renderfarm (for rendering 3d scenes from Maya, encoding with Compressor, and 2d scripts from Shake).
    So my questions are:
    1. WIll OSX Server work on a mac Mini?
    2. Will the Mac Mini be able to handle it? It won't be a render box itself, more a machine to keep control of permissions on our central storage (stop people moving and deleting files and saving things in the incorrect place), and control the QMaster Adminstration.
    3. Has anyone had any experience creating a renderfarm from a stack on Mac Minis?
    4. If no one has any idea can they recommend a person/forum to ask?
    Thankyou very much!

I found answer to my first question - does OSX server work on a Mac Mini - yes

  • Dual displays on mac mini

I'm trying to connect a new Mac mini to 2 displays. The Hdmi cable is connected to a plasma TV and is working great. I bought a mini display port to VGA cable from monoprice and have that connected to a projector. If I go into settings and select mirror displays I get the same image I have on the plasma TV on the projector, but the image lasts only for an instant then become a blank screen. I've tried different resolutions but they all have the same result. I get the image on the projector for an instant then nothing.

The second display has VGA only, is there an adapter for this as well?
You said you bought a MC816B/A, which is a 2011 Mini 2.5 i5. The 2011 Minis have an HDMI to DVI adapter right in box. See here (scroll down to "In the Box"): http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html
That will handle one DVI display with the Mini's HDMI port. If yours is missing then I'd look in the box again and/or take advantage of your AppleCare.
The other monitor only has VGA, so you can use Apple's Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter, which plugs into the Mini's Thunderbolt port. See http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A
    Eric,
So according to Apple's specs, the maximum resolution on the HDMI output (hence DVI with adapter) is 1920x1080. What are the other resolution choices?
Are the quality of the two outputs (the HDMI, the Thunderbolt via adapter) otherwise the same (for the same resolution)? Refresh rate, etc.? I can't find any details on Apple's sites. I'm connecting two indentical monitors (Gateway FHD2401). Need them to look identical.
Natively this monitor supports 1920x1200 (1.6:1). Tried my adapter (MacPro) on 1920x1080 (1.3:1) and it doesn't look so good. So that may answer my question...

  • Using iPad and LogMein app with Mac Mini Server

Hello everyone, I'm new to the community and I would like to ask your opinions on something I'm considering.
I'm currently using a MacBook Air beyond its capabilities. I'm running a dual system via Parallels since some of my work programs are Windows based.
I'm planning to pass the MacBook Air down to one of my employees but I'm stuck on what I will purchase to replace it.
I like the new MacBook Pro, but I don't like the $2200+ price tag. So what I'm considering is buying a Mac Mini Server ($900) and setting it up in my office with a HDTV as a monitor because I use construction design programs and the laptop screen is just too small for large drawings. The Mac Mini also has 1TB storage vs 256GB on the MacPro. I already have an external disk drive so that's no issue either.
Also, since I still need mobile convenience, I'm considering downloading the "LogMein Ignition" app ($130) and using this to log in remotely with my iPad for complete access to all of my files and programs.
What are some pros and cons I should consider before making this move?
Thanks in advance for the help!
    Kevin

    > If your server is behind NAT, there is almost certainly no need for packet filtering and you should disable it.
I disagree, Linc. PF is very useful to block known bad IPs and brute force attacks, which are an hourly occurrence, especially on ssh. I use this PF configuration for OS X, which blocks brute force attacks, updates IP blocks from emergingthreats.net, and more. My logs and pf table "bruteforce" are full of attacks and blocked sites (sudo pfctl -t bruteforce -Ts). I also run snort on OS X and can see that the snort alert triggers are greatly reduced by simply blocking all these packets at the network layer.

  • Mac Mini 4k display @60Hz?

Is it possible to get 4k @60Hz on a mac mini over DisplayPort or does this only work for mac pros and macbook retinas?
If this is possible on the mac mini, would it then be possible to get a DisplayPort to HDMI 1.4 converter and then plug in a 4k display over HDMI and be at 60Hz? Or would this not work? Is there any way to have 4k @60Hz on the mac mini?
By the way, I have the i7 2.3GHz late 2012 mac mini with 16gb ram running Mavericks 10.9.3

The new MacPro already has a built-in HDMI 1.4 4K capable interface and so does the MacBook Pro Retina so these don't really need such a Displayport to HDMI 1.4 adapter.
Hypothetically I would feel that should such an adapter exist then yes it should be possible to get 4K via it. After all Displayport 1.2 does support 4K at 60fps and HDMI 1.4 also supports 4K at 60fps, it therefore makes sense that a Displayport to HDMI adapter should be able to do this.
I have found the following -
    http://www.accellcables.com/collections/adapters/products/ultraav-mini-displaypo rt-1-2-to-hdmi-1-4-active-adapter
    http://www.club-3d.com/index.php/products/reader.en/product/mini-displayport-to- hdmi-active-3d-adapter-cable.html
They only seem to show support for 4K at 24 or 30fps and not 60fps. This maybe all they can do or it maybe that they have not updated information based on Apple's recent upgrade. I suggest you try and get in touch with Accell and ask them.

  • New Mac Mini, iMac, or old Mac Pro for Pro Tools?

I asked this in another thread, but just want to get more input from older Mac Pro users from different years (2008-2010..)
I need to upgrade my Mac and am wondering what experiences everyone has had with different options for running Pro Tools and other professional audio applications.
The FW800 port on my iMac recently broke, and rather than spend a lot on getting it fixed I've decided to just sell it to someone who doesn't need firewire and upgrade.
I'm trying to decide between a newer iMac (3.1 or 3.4 GHz) with thunderbolt and USB 3 (but no FW), a new Mac Mini, also with thunderbolt and USB 3, or a somewhat older Mac Pro (2008-2010) with at least a 2.8GHz processor. Any thoughts from those of you who have used any of these, or who know more about computers in general than I do? Thanks.
Another option a friend recommended was looking for a 2011 iMac as they have both Firewire and Thunderbolt, since my audio interface runs via FW.
    Thanks!

Might want to ask this on a ProTools forum as well.
    fwiw I have a 4 core MacMini Server w 8GB RAM and a 2008 MacPro 8 core w 16GB.
The Mini is used as a general file and A/V server when not specificially tasked with Final Cut Suite efforts.
Unless I have serious Compressor processes running (e.g. converting h.264 to an editable format) that draws on the full cores, the mini can do a good job keeping up with the MacPro.
What the mini won't do is take 3rd party cards or drive multiple large monitors but for digital audio it ought to be fine with thunderbolt drives.
    Good luck.

  • Mac Mini Server Link aggregation - Thunderbolt or USB 3 gigabit ethernet adaptors

I am setting up a late 2012 Mac Mini as a file server with Server 2.2. It has a Promise Pegasus R4 RAID and LaCie 4TB drives daisy chained via the Thunderbolt connection. 4 users on MacPro's will connect to the server to access these hard drives via gigabit ethernet.
I imagine the gigabit ethernet will be the bottleneck, so I'm now looking at link aggregation. Not a problem on the MacPro's but the Mac Mini will require an adaptor to get a second gigabit port. From reading this forum I understand the Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit adaptor will work, but I'm concerned that it will need to be fitted 3rd in line after the R4 and LaCie drives. The 10Gbps bandwidth Thunderbolt has, may cause another bottleneck with all three working off the same port?
An option would be to use one of the USB 3 ports with this adaptor http://www.ebuyer.com/412005-startec...edium=products
I believe it work with OSX, but I have no speed information or if OSX link aggregation will work using it.
Any thoughts on the above would be appreciated and recommendations on a suitable Network Switch with LACP support welcome.

At present Mountain Lion Server cannot use a LACP bond, in my experience only of course. http://www.small-tree.com/kb_results.asp?ID=59 describes LACP/Bonds do not show up in Server Admin GUI on Mountain Lion
anyone know how to do it? or the location and the name of the plist file to configure the network interface in ML server?

  • Mac Mini and VNC

    Hi all,
I've got one Mac Mini G4 and one Mac Pro.
I'm using Mini as a print server for my 3 printers, Pro is wired to the network, Mini is Airport connected.
It works well. I also want to get access to Mini through Pro with OSXvnc server, Mini is headless.
I was using Chicken of the VNC Client on Pro, but due to weird keyboard layout issues (Pro is equipped with Azerty keyboard), I've changed and use VNCThing Client.
This VNC connection was working great with limited 1024 x 768 resolution.
Mini and printers are powered with a remote controlled socket bar, I've tested this system once, thus Mini has been powered off with the remote control.
After restarting Mini, the VNC connexion Window shown up normally on Pro:
    http://peloche.smugmug.com/photos/99464454-L.jpg
then after logging in the next window was:
    http://peloche.smugmug.com/photos/99464493-L.jpg
I've made a lot of tries, desinstalling VNC server, client, reinstalling etc... the result didn't change, but if I attache any monitor to Mini the VNC display on Pro is perfect...
So I created a 10 GB partition onto Mini HDD, installed OSX 10.4 from scratch, updated to 10.4.8, installed OSXvnc server, configured this server to start automatically when Mini starts.
Result of this new installation is :
    - can't have access to Mini's OSXvnc server at start from Pro.
    - can access to the server after I log in locally with an attached keyboard and mouse on Mini, then VNC Client works well.
I'm a bit lost, I think that when I suddenly powered off Mini I've corrupted some piece of software but which ??
I don't understand why the fresh OSX install doesn't allow VNC connexion before log in.
    I'll really appreciate any help,
    Thanks,
    Peloche,
    MacPro 2.66, 6GB, 1TB; Mini G4, 1.45, 1GB; iPod 60 GB; 30" & 20" ACD; Apple IIC   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Found solution for the first issue:
    I've removed the files
    1 - Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
    2 - Users/myname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.0014510a0cf2.pli st
    3 - Users/myname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.preference.displays.0014510a0 cf2.plist
And Yep that works great with Airport only.

  • Mac Pro using Mac Mini as Print Server

    Hi all,
Mac Pro is wired to my network, Mac Mini is Airport connected.
I'd like to use Mac Mini as a Print Server without keyboard and mouse. I've installed OSXvnc-server on Mac Mini and Chicken of the VNC (CVNC) Client on Mac Pro.
Mac Pro's keyboard is azerty as was Mac Mini, it's impossible to loggin with Chicken of the VNC, password is not accepted, I connect an azerty keyboard to Mac Mini and I can loggin.
Typing on Mac Pro in Mac Mini TextEdit through CVNC give weird keyboard layout, not only azerty qwerty different layout.
In between my two Mac Mini there wasn't any problem using CVNC and the same server but Azerty Qwerty layout.
Is there any other solution to use Mac Mini as a print server ? What about using Desktop remote connection ?
    Thanks,
    Peloche,
    MacPro 2.66, 6GB, 1TB; Mini G4, 1.45, 1GB; iPod 60 GB; 30" & 20" ACD; Apple IIC   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Ah… right! That explains it.
So what model printers are they?
    Ned,
Printers are HP Color LaserJet 2550L, HP Photosmart 8250 and Epson EPL-5900L.
I've changed the VNC Client from "Chicken of the VNC" to "VNCThing".
Now I can log in from Mac Pro using its Azerty Keyboard as Qwerty Keyboard.
Once logged in I've set Mac Mini Keyboard to "Extended (or Expanded ?) American" keyboard within System Preferences, with this option Mac Mini see the Mac Pro Keyboard as an Azerty layout...
I've connected two printers through USB2 Hub connected to Mac Mini and the third one direct onto Mac Mini USB port.
Back to Mac Pro "System Preferences Fax & Printers", "+", immediatly the 3 printers have been proposed, I've selected them and tested all: it works perfectly.
Mac Mini is set to "restart after power cut" and is connected for power onto a remoted control power distribution sockets, that means Mac Mini is starting and stopped when printers are powered on and off.
The sole small issue is that I can't find how to display Mac Mini GUI on Mac Pro at a better resolution than 1024 x 768.
    Thanks for your time,

  • FCP 5 on mac mini

Hi -- can I run FCP 5 on a 2.26Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini w/Snow Leopoard?

I once worked with a local live production company who ran LiveType I think it was on a Mac Mini hooked up to the live video output to stream the names of each group currently performing to the TVs throughout the building. It was a pretty nice setup they had. I think that Apple simply doesn't "support" it because they don't want us either A. turning to a mini instead of a MBP or MacPro and B. when it had the Intel integrated graphics, good luck with that. Now that they have dedicated graphics and Firewire 800, the machines actually look like pretty nice basic/beginner editing machines.

  • New Mac Mini as dedicated capture/compression unit

I'm in what seems to be a bit of a pickle.
I work for a University (requires purchasing Academic software) and will be upgrading our video suite with two more computers very soon. Right now I'm running a Quad 2.5GHz G5 with Final Cut Studio 1 and will be adding a new MacPro (to replace our much older second editor) and Mac Mini (dedicated video capture and DVD compression) to the mix. Ideally, the plan would be to run/upgrade both towers to Final Cut Studio 2 and Leopard, and install Final Cut Studio 1 onto the new Mini. Unfortunately, I have FCP 5.0.4 and have read that is not compatible with Leopard/Intel.
Besides purchasing a third Final Cut Studio 2 (and basically throwing away my copy of FCS1) is there another way to capture and compress (using Compressor) with the Mini? I not sure that capturing footage and making DVDs a bit easier will be worth the extra $700. I guess the other option would be leaving FCS1 on the G5 and running current versions on the new Intel machines.

I know a video production company brings with a mini on their live switching cart, and I thought that they used that for live ingest from their mixer so that they could immediately show the perspective buyers what they had JUST shot. But they also did LiveType titles, so the mini may have just been feeding the titles to the switcher, I can't remember anymore. One thing you forgot to mention was how or what you'd be capturing, and why you'd need to capture on a separate machine. However, it seems like your choice of only using towers is the way to go, and you can still use 5.0.1 on the headless G5, so that's all good at least.
    Good luck,

  • PowerMac G5 vs new Mac mini?

I hope this is the right place to ask this (maybe I ought to put the question in the Powermac G5 forum as well...)
I currently have a G5 Dual 2 GHz, and it's definitely starting to show it’s age! I have been looking at getting a MacPro but the cost is prohibitive. And then I thought (as I have a screen (two actually), mouse and keyboard, plus external drives etc, why not try the Mini?
So I guess the main question is would a new Intel Mac Mini run/operate faster than an old G5 or would I still be looking at the spinning beach ball of death? The most CPU intensive thing I use is Final Cut Express; would the Mini handle that ok?
    Any other ideas/suggestions?
    Thanks!!
    Andy

I don't own an Intel mini myself, but I buy and set them up for users in my networks from time to time. I recently had my G5 DP in the office when a new 1.83 C2D mini arrived, and in a direct comparison, the G5 gave a benchmark score of 78, the mini gave 96. In reality, since benchmarks don't really exercise the system the way real applications do (and in particular don't cause a lot of paging activity so the relative differences in hard drive performance are not really measured) the mini was perhaps 10% faster. Just to give you some solid data!
And it's not that they are not good systems - I never cease to be impressed and pleased at how well such small systems really perform - but if you are going to spend money, you really need to be looking for something that notably outperforms the G5. An iMac would, for example. In the same benchmarking test, a 2.4GHz 24" Aluminium iMac turned in a score of 149.
In terms of the G5, upping the RAM would certainly help - not a massive boost in performance, but making the system smoother to use. Final Cut Express is really not a particularly demanding application in terms of system hardware though, so beachballing suggests there is something awry.
To clear caches and logs (and indeed perform some general housekeeping) I would generally suggest a simple utility such as YASU (http://jimmitchelldesign.com/projects/yasu/). Set it to all tasks and make sure nothing is running. When it's done it will force a restart, which will be slower than usual, after which the system will run a little slow for a time as it rebuilds caches. YASU performs other tasks that can help with system performance too.
It is true that in MacOS you don't really need to defragment or optimize the drive, but that isn't always true if you handle lots of large files such as video. Those can cause fragmentation over time.
A full erase and install is a good way to test the system overall however, because it returns everything to the 'out-of-the-box' condition. If the system performs well (or at least better) when that is done, you will know much more clearly whether it needs replacing or not!

I have Firewire 400 HDD and it work well with my MacBook with firewire 400 port, but when I use it with Firewire 800 + logitech firewire 800-400 cable it not work correctly, sometime It can't see the hdd, sometime It see but I can't copy file from/to my hdd.
I did bring the cable to test with another Mac Mini that brought together it did the same, but when I take it to the store thay can use it with MacPro correctly without any problem.
Can anyone help me to figure it out

What OS is your MacBook running? I have an iPod that kills the FireWire ports on Leopard systems, but works OK on Tiger. When I upgraded my MacBook to OS 10.5.7 from 10.4.11, FireWire went bad with that iPod. It drove me nuts with my new Mini running Leopard.
There are some Firewire interface chips which are incompatible with some Macs, and you can also check with the HDD manufacturer to see if there is a firmware update.
