Do you advise me to buy a Macpro, instead of a Toshiba? I work mostly on Excel & PowerPoint. Please advise

I have a friend who has one and I set up a Toshiba for him, take care of it so I have some first hand experience.
For what you get with a basic use 15" Toshiba and a basic use MacBook Pro 13", the Tosihba is a much better value for the money. Can cost as little as a 1/3 the price of a MacBook Pro.
You also get Windows 7, and if your sharing files a lot with other Windows users, then it pays to have Windows as a lot of formatting and other issues don't pop up as much as trading files between a Mac and a PC.
So price wise for "Excel and PowerPoint" basic web use, most video watching. Stuff 90% of people do with computers (dual core is fine)
Toshiba dual core AMD with integrated graphics = apx $400 + tax. (w/3 year warranty.)
MacBook Pro i5 dual core Intel with integrated graphics = apx $1200+$350 AppleCare + tax.
So clearly the Toshiba is a better deal and you get a bigger screen.
Both the Toshiba and the 13" and the 2,0 Ghz MacBook Pro are going to run hot, as they have either no graphics card, or a weak one. (the 2.0 ghz MBP)
Some things to be done with a new PC,
1: Run all the Windows updates over and over, until clear
2: Install the free Microsoft Security Essentials
3: Create a non-admin account that you use all the time online, a admin account is for running updates etc.
4: Create a set of System Restore Disks (2 sets) and label them
5: Be extra careful installing "crap", verify all sources of software installed to make sure your not installing something with a bad reputation. Scan all media for malware before connecting to your machine or right away.
6: Backup files to a external drive regularly.
7: Make sure your web borwser plug ins are updated, by regularly checking with this site.
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
You don't need to pay for anti-malware, MSE will take care of you well. If you have a issue, you can always restore from the System Restore Disks or partition. Hold F8 upon booting.
Basically the list above is the same for Mac users now, except having to install anti-malware. There is the Flashback trojan that can catch a Mac user. Also if a Mac user needs to clean Windows malware off then perhaps they should install ClamXav.
There is also ClamWin for Windows which is also free.
ON the other hand, if your looking for a more powerful "workstation" type laptop, money is no object, then the quad core i7 with it's Unix based OS X is by far a better choice than a Windows PC. It also has a powerful graphics card in addition to the very poor integrated graphics integrated in the CPU like they all come now.
If you need Windows, you can install it with Bootcamp and run it and Windows on the same machine or you can run Windows AT THE SAME TIME as OS X, along with other operating systems using virutal machine software.
Your needs will be more along the lines of video and music production, 3D gaming, running several operating systems at once and so forth.
Because OS X is much more stable, it's a better choice for more demanding uses than Windows.
For this type of MacBook Pro, you want the 2.2 Ghz 15" or better.
Value speaking for most basic uses, a Mac really has nothing going for it against a Windows 7 PC as it used too, and it's really all Apple's intention not to play in the "sub-$1000" notebook market, so if your getting the same for less and it's just as stable, then I say get the Toshiba.
There is nothing wrong is getting just the hardware you need and not paying a fortune for it.
Apple's answer for the sub $1000 market is iPads, which only renders part of the Internet and can't run software from Microsoft like Excel or Powerpoint.
So again your choices are abundant on the Windows side, there are also more support all around you as well.
If you get a job, they all use Windows, except in certain fields like graphics they tend to use Mac's.
Hope this helps.

If it was me, I would be using a 500GB SSD boot drive, or 250GB ($119)
Old rule "Less is more" and if you want a production system to run fast and be rock solid, avoid anything not essential. Might want an alternate user accounts or even dual boot or run some stuff in an OS X VM.
I would rearrange the memory and add more: 3 x 4GB on one bank and gradually upgrade bank B to same.
Finally, upgrade to 8-core 3.2GHz or higher
Did everything run better with Mavericks? Did you keep it on a clone?
Did you upgrade in place or do a clean install? those often have different outcomes.
A 5,1 should flatten any bumps easily and perform very very well. Different configurations for Adobe vs FCP-X and others. -

Once again thanks for your kindness. I do have carbonite and have all my data saved there as well as my own external drive. I was not sure what etrecheck was, but found it and completed the review. I am attaching it here. I saw the adware warning and will remove it after hearing from you and your thoughts. Again, your assistance is greatly appreciated.

What is the best & cheap backup solution for a macpro laptop?
What is the best & cheap backup solution for a macpro laptop? easy & simple to use
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components: 1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences; and, 2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
SuperDuper!
Synk Pro
Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
Cool Drives
OWC
WiebeTech
Firewire Direct
California Drives
NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver. -
1tb HD for MacPro 1.1 - Suggestions
Anyone like to inform on the best/cheapest hasrd drive of 1tb capacity for the MacPro 1.1 model . . . ? T.I.A.
RonWestern Digital isn't that bad. What's bad is using hard drive manufacturer software. They can make hardware, but their software leaves much to be desired. The problem is now that all hard drive companies have bought companies that make somewhat marginal drives. Seagate and Western Digital's original drives are great. It is the Maxtor and IBM deskstars that could have been better, and same with the Toshiba drives. If you can get a hard drive with at least a 3 year warranty you are better.
Amazon sells hard drives, and I would trust Amazon over anything on eBay as long as it is new. -
A question about the standard Nvidia card included with the MacPro
I am using the Nvivia GeForce 7300 GT video card that came with my MacPro. When in Boot Camp running Window Vista, the Nvidia Control Panel says that the cards output through the digital connection is 1080p. Does this mean that if I play a DVD on the MacPro that it is upconverted to 1080p? Or, does it pass the video through at 480p?
That is wrong. For one, I have the comupter pluged into a input port in the TV, not an output port. Output ports are for sending the TV signal to another device. Not to accept an input from another device. I am using a DVI>HDMI cable. When my set gets a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p signal through HDMI it displays it as such on the info screen. Yes my set upgrades all signals to 1080p. I checked with the manufacture. They also told me that if the info screen says that a 1080p signal is being input to it, that is what it will display and if a 480p signal is being input that is what it will display. That is also how it works with my satellite receiver and my TV antenna. I also hooked up an old Toshiba Satellite Laptop to the set and the info screen displayed 480p. The Nvidia card in Apple Mac Pros and Macbook Pros does upconvert.

Apple dvi to video adapter for macpro working?
hallo,
is it possible to use the adapter for the geforce 7300 in the macpro for pal video output? will it work? the apple store lists the adapter only for g5 and mini, but i see no reason, why it shoud not work with the gforce...
any idea? thank you.
thomas
macpro Mac OS X (10.4.7)I have wondered about that G5 support since others have had bad luck with Nvidia boards and the video adapter. e.g. it doesn't work with the 7800GT, which is a G5 board. All current ATI cards on their web-site show support for it but the MacPro card is not on ATI's site.
The adapter seems to have disappeared from the displays section of the Apple Store.
Another option is a VGA to video adapter
<http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/PC-TVvideoadapter.html>
It costs more, but does a lot more, and should work with any video card. -
How can I repair Vista system files with only a Toshiba recovery disc??
I have pretty much come to the conclusion that the reason I can't install Vista service pack 2 is due to some corrupt vista files. I ran the program that checks that system files and it said some are corrupt. There are some things I can't do, like turn on the Windows firewall even from that special adminostrar screen, or if I schedule a check disc scan, when I reschedule it for start up, it doesn't do it at startup. I had a Red Screen about a year ago, and it did a bunch of stuff and at the end, it said you had a major event and contact your administartor. Well, I am the administartor, lol. Anyway, it worked fine and I attribute these problems to that event.
Vista discs come with a repair option. All I have is the Toshiba disc that lets you reinstall the Toshiba and Vendor applications OR reformat the hard drive. I am not going to spend days trying to get my system back to where it is by tracking down everything I have installed especially when its working. Is there a work around? I will buy a Vista Home Premium disc if I have to before refortmatting. I have an x205-S9349 with Vista Home Premium. THANKS!Satellite X205-S9349

Blue screen of death on Toshiba P755-S5375 with ADOBE ENCORE CS6
I recently purchased a new laptop and installed Adobe Master Collection CS6. I purchased the laptop for video capture and editing, as well as for blu-ray authoring.
Unfortunately, although the computer and software works fine for video capture and editing, I am unable to author a blu-ray. For authoring, I am using Adobe’s Encore CS6. After checking and previewing my creation, I attempt to build to disc using Encore. About 2 seconds after clicking the build disc in Encore, I get the “blue screen of death” (BSOD). This happens every time I try to build to blu-ray (only blu-ray has this issue; I am able to build to a DVD). I am using an external blu-ray drive on USB 3.0.
I am using Encore version 6.0.0.492
Here are the blu-ray drive specs:

We need to know the Stop code on the blue screen. If there is a file name mentioned, we want that too.
You can prevent the rapid disappearance of the blue screen during a normal boot by choosing this at the F8 Startup menu.

Toshiba 19CV100U 110v-220v?
Hi Toshiba!
I have very quick question, i bought my 19CV100U in the US and now i returned to Europe, do i need get a voltage converter in order to use the Tv or not? I can't see any info in the TV specs that´s why i decided to post here.
Thanks
HugoIt does not need a transformer. The transformer is built in to the iMac. It accepts 100-240v AC, 50-60Hz input (which covers most of the world).
All you need is an adapter to fit your US power lead's plug to whatever outlet socket type is used at your destination. That is just an inert, pass-through pin adapter. No transformer. -

Toshiba Satellite L650-07U, Hard disk failure and replacement
Hi all,
I have Toshiba Satellite L650-07U Laptop, Model: PSK1EC-0700Q with 4GB RAM, 650GB HD, Windows 7 Home Premium installed. At the time of first use, i made Recovery DVDs which took 4 blank DVDs using Recovery media creator.
From 2 weeks it is giving problem, at start its slowdown with every application, then suddenly it started Hard disk failure error and ask to backup important files. From that instant i did all my backup save in another portable Hard drive.
I had hiren boot CD, and ran RAM test and found it OK, and then run Hard Disk test and found few bad sectors at few certain point, As 650GB Hard disk was taking alot time of time for checking bad sectors, so i stopped that application.
First I tried Recovery DVDs to restore Windows, but it failed as Laptop DVD-Writer was unable to boot from those created DVDs (DVDs are OK as had checked it on Desktop computer DVD-ROM), Laptop DVD-Writer is also working as I test few more bootable CDs and it booted perfectly, but it is not booting from Recovery DVDs.
Than i tried to restore from Recovery partition using Factory restore settings, it erases all data and reinstall new and fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. It works fine for few hours than again pops up Hard Disk Failure message again and again. I searched here in Toshiba Forum and have found similar problem with other members and finally decided that it need to replace Hard Disk with new one. As It is now two and a half month old, thats why i need to buy new Hard Disk for my Laptop.
I checked all partitions of drive using Hiren Boot CD, and had found that there are four default partitions in Toshiba original laptop drive,
One hidden partition of 1.5 GB
One hidden partition of almost 21 GB
One hidden partition of almost 12 GB
One partition of 561 GB, which was the original partition where windows 7 was installed along with all of my Data.
Now I want to replace faulty drive with a new one and have a lot of question in my mind which I need to share with you guys.
At the time of first use I installed Windows 7 64 bit edition, and made Recovery DVDs, and at second time of restore to factory setting I had installed Windows 7 32 bit. I have confusion about recovery DVDs (which is not booting from default DVD-Writer of Laptop), either it has 64 Bit recovery data or 32 bit? Or have both 64 and 32 bit Data.
Toshiba restore to factory setting without using any recovery DVD/USB is the best possible way to restore Windows 7, How can I make same recover hidden partitions from original/faulty hard drives to new hard drive partitions? Is this possible and how?
On Default hard drive there was one partition of 561GB instead of two or more partitions. Is this possible to split partitions in new hard drives instead of one big partition?
As Recovery DVDs are not able to boot from laptop default DVD-Writer, is it possible to open those DVDs on another System and copy tem in USB drive and use it for booting? If it is possible than please show me the steps for making bootable USB from these Recovery DVDs.
Thanks,
masterleous

This site is for US computers. I doubt you'll get your questions for that Canadian model answered here.
There appear to be two recovery partitions. Maybe one for 32- and one for 64-bit Windows. Or maybe one is for English and the other for French.
Your User's Manual isn't much help either. You probably need to ask Toshiba tech support in Canada.
About all I have to offer is this: Be wary of drives with advanced-format technology. See my message about that.

Hitachi drives hum in MacPro?
I just got a refurbed MacPro with the stock 250GB hard drive and so I ordered 2x500GB Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 drives from zipzoomfly.com (1.25TB total) The drives arrived today and so I went and installed them (very easy in the MacPro)
Upon boot up, I noticed a really nasty "clicking" noise and thought "oh no", the machine never fully booted, I even got the circle w/ a line through it. So I shut it down and removed one of the drive trays and figured out which one of the drives was clicking.
So, with the other drive still in place, I booted again and this time it came up and wanted me to initialize it so all is well... but the thing is that it seems to "hum" quite a bit. Overall, it's much louder than with just the 250GB boot drive installed, I was wondering is this "hum" normal on a MacPro? I can kind of understand it because the case is aluminum, but I'm surprised at how it cycles the hum. It's like it'll hum, then it'll be quiet, then it'll hum again and so on.
I have another Hitachi 7k500 in my PC and it doesn't make any noise...
What do you think?
G5 Dual 1.8GHz 1GB RAM Mac OS X (10.3.9)
MacPro Quad-core 2.66GHz, 2GB RAM Mac OS X (10.4.9)A couple other people have taken similar measures. I bought a 10K Raptor last Sept that makes the case hum and vibrate. Bought a new one, doesn't do it.
I have two WD Caviar SE16s that are so quiet you don't know they are there. But a Maxtor MaxLine Pro sounds like some old big SCSI drive from centuries past churning away. But no case issue.
Sometimes making sure to tighten those bolts and firmly insert the drive is all that is needed. For months I had mine on its side rather than upright and the noise and hum was abated.
I like to take some tools to loosen up and break a drive in at first. Just zero the drive to insure all is well and scan all the blocks. Or use Speedtools to test media and performance. -
Can anyone PLEASE tell me if I can download itunes to my Toshiba Thrive & if so what version to use?
iTunes is available for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X - nothing else, including Android.
The version of iTunes pre-installed on an iPad is a store-front for the iTunes Store, and cannot be installed on anything else.
