MacPro - What must I buy
As an experienced Avid editor I need some advice in regards with Final Cut Pro.
It took some hands-on time convincing me about Final Cut Pro. I’m glad to say that it has been a pleasant experience and that I’ve developed some trust in Final Cut Pro!
So much so that I want to buy a Mac Pro – some much needed advice will be appreciated. I want a top of the range Mac Pro, Final Cut Pro Studio 2 Suite and some optional extras.
I’ll give you a list of things what I feel I may need to start - please feel free to give me your professional input and advice.
Keep in mind that I want to switch between HDV/DVcam and Betacam SP, VHS and DVD for input and output.
Specs:
* 3.0GHz, 8-core Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro with a 250gig internal hdd
(Is this the best I can buy, and with an optional 500gig or 750gig internal hdd’s?)
* 2 Gig RAM
(It comes standard with 1gig RAM? Would 2gig be sufficient?)
* 1 x 30” Cinema HD Display
* Rodeon x1900 Graphics card
(Is the card that comes with the Mac Pro sufficient, or do I have to buy this card?)
* AJA Io Converter
(I’m not sure how this works – is it almost the same as the Avid’s Mojo?)
* 2 x Seagate Barracuda 500GB - USB/Firewire400/eSATA
(Which brand would you put your money on, and how big?)
* Some say I must get a - PCIe eSATA card (1 or 2 port)
(I’m not quite sure what it use will be?)
* HDV 1080i DVcam Sony player/recorder
* JVC TM-H1950C monitor
* Appropriate speakers; maybe the Fortex 6301B?
* Wireless keybord and -mouse

I also want to buy a Sony HVR-A1E HDV 1080i Camera Recorder to use in conjunction with above mentioned.
What would your take be on all of this? Would this be the best option? What would you have bought?

Personally I think you are overboard on CPU and under-board on RAM and HD capacity.
Go check out http://www.barefeats.com/octopro1.html where they do a comparison of the 8 core vs the 4 core. You are paying about $1500 more for performance only when you use compressor. Other than that you won't see much difference. I would only buy 1Gb of RAM from Apple. Go to newegg.com and get yourself another 4Gb for only $272>

I would spring for the 750Gb system drive. That cost is a wash to the 2gb vs 1gb from Apple. You will want to have as much disk space as possible on your system drive. With the money you save on not going 8 core I'd get a second 30" Cinema display and a second Radeon card.
For my MacPro I got 3x500 WD SataII hard drives and configured them as a RAID 0 drive on the motherboard. This gives me 1.4Tb for storage of my capture files. I personally am on and off my machine so I power down the RAID when I'm not working. It is a mild nuisance as you get the spinning beach ball while things spin up. If you want the fastest all the time, then just don't power it down. I use a RAID 5 linux server on my network for backup. One of the external firewire drives you mention would be fine for that. Don't buy the AJA IO Converter until you really need it. Its basically a portable capture box.
I'm not sure I'd get the new wireless keyboard. It is not a full keyboard but the usb keyboard it. I got the Mighty Mouse and I hate it. I gave it to my wife and I got a Logitech Revolution VX.

I've read that Promise Pegasus2 R6 thunderbolt 2 series does not sell replacement parts (no replacement parts for any of the Pegasus line). I'm buying the new MacPro but am concerned about spending $2K for storage (12tb version) that may break and cannot be fixed (am told that one must purchase a new unit if a part breaks). On the two occasions I've had to call on their technical sujpport, I've found them readily available, knowledgeable, and very helpful. In one case it involved the reset of a unit after a power failure at an inopportune time; in the other case it was a question about upgrading disk drives to higher capacities (1 Gb gto 4 Gb). I was pleased to learn that their tech support people were in California and as good if not better than upper-tier AppleCare reps. The hardware itself has functioned flawlessly so far.

Do you have a wi-fi network in your home ? If you do then you should be able to connect your phone to it via Settings > Wi-Fi on your phone - that should show any networks that are available, and tapping on the network that you want to use (and typing in its password if it's password protected) should connect the phone to it. If you don't have a wi-fi network then yes, you will need wifi router in your home, which is connected to the internet (e.g. via your phone line) to be able to back up your phone to iCloud.

You can have up to 5 computers authorized with the same iTunes account.
An iPod, iPhone, and iPad don't count against this and neither does an Apple TV. -
Must I buy something in order to share (via email etc.) an Adobe pdf file created on my computer?
I downloaded Adobe Reader X. I created docs in Word and saved it as a pdf file. I tried to send the doc by email.When the doc is opened, it is gibberish. Must I buy something for the document to be shared and read? Is it a setting issue? I am using this for a resume and trying to apply for jobs. Please help.
Probably not Acrobat since he is using Reader (that is another forum). Why are you sending the DOC file if you have somehow created a PDF (like with the WORD plugin)? Usually when the results looks like gibberish it is because you used some fonts that are not on the other machine and have not embedded them in your document. Don't try to get fancy with a resume (unless maybe you are applying for some sort of advertising job), but give basic information as requested by the potential employer. A fancy style with some strange fonts may be your problem. If you had been talking about sending the PDF file (not what you said), then it is likely that the fonts are not embedded. Since you are using Reader, there is not much we can do to help you. Reader does not create or edit PDFs.

In my personal opinion, buying Apple products in a country where Apple has no stores and no corporate presence is a risk that the buyer takes knowingly. I don't think it's a wise risk, and I don't recommend that anyone take it. A small percentage of the products sold anywhere are going to have problems, and it makes more sense to buy an inferior product that can at least be serviced locally than to buy a superior product that may have to be sent thousands of miles for repair if anything ever goes wrong with it. -

Then you just need a male-to-male video patch cable to connect the adapter to your TV. -

Sorry, no way around this limitation on an iOS device. To use a new iCloud account, you need to create such on a computer first, then setup the account on your iOS device.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

HELP! I need some help from true Mac fans! What should I buy???
So, I'm moving to Japan, which has a couple of implications (other than the fact that my wife's parents and my parents are looking for any legal recourse to stop us from taking their only grandchild out of the country). More importantly however, I have had to sell my B&O TV and music system (different signals from the UK where we now live). I also decided to sell our stereo (or rather my wife decided it was too bulky so as long as it was not in the living room or bedroom I could keep it...). Finally, I need a new laptop for personal use. I have some friends that are absolute mac fans, who have convinced me to go over to the other side (i.e. yours).
The opportunity I now have is to create a complete system as I need a laptop, something to play my music, a TV, etc. Given I am starting from a clean sheet I was hoping somebody out there could help me 'design' a complete set-up. My wife and I are keen photographers (both photography and video), we like listening to music, and watching movies (we definitely need a region-free DVD player), so what should we buy?
Any input would be hugely appreciated.OSX also supports IME right out of the box.

It sets up pretty well, too; I like it more than Mircrosoft's implementation (language bar).
Only thing to keep in mind is where you buy the MacBook; if you get it in Japan you'll get a Japanese keyboard, which displays most of the kana alongside the keys. You also get the conversion and switch keys on the keyboard itself, which is great.
The MacBook Power Unit is multi-voltage, so no matter where you pick it up the worst you need is a plug adapter; although getting one from apple would be best. Just don't think you need to buy a new power unit, only the plug and cable. -
If I have a 2009 iMac, can I upgrade to use it with Apple TV. It doesn't have Airplay capability. If possible, what should I buy?
You need a newer 2011 or later iMac to use Airplay.

Two computers share the same WI-fi Modem . When computer A reads a message it is marked as read on both PC's, not allowing computer B to see what must still be read. Email is Thunderbird.
Please help, Thank you for this online support optionImap wasn't designed for this kind of multi user situation. It assumes that you the account owner will be using it to manage one account via multiple devices. So once you have read a message it has been read, regardless of which device you were using at the time.
You appear to be describing a situation where you want more than one user to read each message, without anyone knowing if anyone else has read it or even dealt with it. Frankly, I can't imagine a set of circumstances where this workflow would make sense or be useful.
You can do various things such as manually setting messages as unread, or moving them from one folder to another to indicate that they have been processed, but much of this relies on users being thorough and conscientious.
You may need to be running your own server to do this sort of email message managing, if you really need to fork a message so it gets to multiple recipients. Managing which users see a particular message is a job for a server, not the end-user's email client. -

We can check a few other things, since the scan communication itself seems to be working okay, just not from the front of the printer. I'd like to check the Scan Settings on the front panel with in the HP Solution Center.
Once you're in the HP Solution Center, please click on Settings along the bottom, click Scan Settings, then click Scan To... Setup.
You will then see a screen that has Available Scan Shortcuts on the left and Front Panel List (Scan To button) on the right. If there are no options on the right, please add the scan options you'd like from the left side by clicking on it and then clicking the Add button in the middle. If you add one by mistake just click on it and then click Remove. Once you've added the options click Update the Device and then OK on the next screen.
If there are options on the right side when you open it, please Remove all of the options, click Update the Device, and then go back to the Settings screen, before following the same process described above to add the options to the right side.
Once you've added the options check the front panel of the printer. If they still aren't there, please turn the printer off for 30 seconds before turning it back on (use the power button not the power cord) and try the Scan option again.
