MacPro won't mount Windows USB3 External drive

I have a macPro 2,1 and it won't mount a Windows external drive that is USB3. I've tried NTFS-3G but still won't see the USB3 drive. I thought USB3 was backwards compatible. Can anyone help?

Your Mac is using PCIe 3.0 controller which are iffy even on OS X and may not be seen by Windows (and my Windows PCIe 3.0 card doesn't show up or work in Mac OS).
If you attach it via USB2 it might show, depends really on the bridge used by the enclosure probably. It is has USB3 and eSATA and you have PCIe SATA (Sonnet E4P is expensive but works great in both platforms)

New 13" MBP won't mount or recognize external drives via FW 800

Hi all,
I have a brand new 13" MBP. I have two external 750GB Lacie drives that were formatted for MacOS on my previous 13" MacBook. I mounted these drives via USB on the older laptop.
Neither of these drives will mount on my new laptop via the FW 800 ports. I've tested two cables on both drives and nothing works. Also, neither of the drives appear via disk utility when using FW 800. The drives do however appear when using USB.
Is my FW 800 port faulty? Could it be something else? Thanks!

I'm having a similar problem to you - my external drive is not recognised by my MacBook Pro when using FW800 but it is when using USB2.

I'm new to Macs. Looking to buy a MacBook Pro 17 inch, and I am wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to load windows on an extermal disk, firewire 800 or E-sata off an express 34 card?
If this isn't possible, can OS X be loaded on external drives?
I'd rather load windows on external drive than OS X.

You'll need to repair or replace your SuperDrive as that is the only way Windows can be installed (downloading is what you do with files on the Internet). And it must be the built-in SuperDrive. The external one Apple sells for the MacBook Air and 2012 iMac will not work.

recently I have stumbled upon installing 10.7 lion on external drive:

OSX could be installed and run from external harddisk for quite some time.
Sadly, Microsoft choosed to not allow Windows to be installed and run from external harddisk.
However, you can find instructions on how-to do this nonetheless on the internet.
A good USB-hub (preferably one that is self-powered and not USB-powered) will let you use both the Superdrive and an external harddisk at the same time.

Mounting a windows formated external drive

I'm running Lion on a Macbook Pro. It doesn't recognize one of my external drives that was used on my windows based laptop when connected via the USB cable. Is there a way to mount this external drive on a mac?

@Shootist007, thanks for your reply, yes, it's a USB dirve (seagate) and I do have it connected to the wall outlet via AC adapter. It was originally formated to work with my windows machine but I thought the Mac could read windows formatted drives....?

Won't Mount Windows Install Disk

Daughters' Brand New MBP Dual Core 2 will not mount my Original Windows XP Install CD.
Inserts, runs, buzzs and spits it out. Can't even start to run Parallels since I can't install the OS.
Tried the same exact disk on an older G5.....mounted on the desktop just fine.
Same disk worked fine on my MacPro and had no issues with the towers' optical drive.
Any suggestions and has anyone else had a mount/read failure of a windows CD?

After 90 minutes of discussing the problem with the Parallels support rep, I was still without a solution. He hadn't tried to get Parallels to see the XP disc in the external drive, but instead gone the ISO route yet even that wasn't being recognized by the program when trying to set up Windows. After beating my head on the desk in frustration, I was finally able to fix it myself. I created a virtual machine that had almost no components to it (don't know if this was part of the problem or not) outside of memory, the CD/DVD-ROM pointed at the ISO image of the XP install disc, and a hard drive. I then went thru the Install VM button and prepared to install, but instead of using the Recommended settings, I used the one below it. I wish I could say with certainty what I actually chose, but I can't. I tried too many things in rapid succession to know which one was actually a hit. When I didn't choose the recommended settings, to my amazement, I finally got the Windows setup boxes to appear. This was quickly followed by a panic attack as I realized that hitting F8 to accept the license agreement wasn't working, but attaching a keyboard from another machine fixed that and I'm now happy to report that all is working perfectly. I just wish the disc drive would have read the disc correctly in the first place.

I formatted the drive with exfat from within Lion and then divided the drive into two equal partitions, one for Mac and one for PC. I tried to use Time Machine to back up the Mac data and it seemed to blow away the Mac partition which is no longer visible to Finder and consequently cannot be backed up to. I haven't tried to do anything about backing up the Windows 7 partition. As an aside, one online source I saw said I need to do this setup routine of the external drive from within Windows 7 in order for the drive to be accessible to both operating systems?

You need to find a Windows backup software that will work with Apple's Bootcamp partition.
On a Mac, Apple does a hack to "fool" Windows into thinking it's on a PC with a Master Boot Record Partition map.
Mac's can only boot from a GUID Partiton map, so there is a hybid MBR installed into the Bootcamp partiton when you set it up.
Traditional Windows backup software won't work when you try to restore Windows because it expects to be a PC with a MBR and runs Linux to restore Windows with. (a Mac can run Linux if Linux knows it's talking to a GUID)
And You can only image backup Windows, not make it a bootable copy on a external drive like you can do with OS X.
So the external drive needs to be formatted with a GUID Partition map and 2 partitions.
1: OS x Extended (J) so you can use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone Lion to it.
2: exFAT so you can save the Windows image file to it.
Now you need to find software that will run in OS X, take the Windows image of the Bootcamp partiton and restore it. There used to be great free software that did this, but since Lion rolled around a lot of good software wsn't updated anymore, guess people figured Apple is closing up like iPads and didn't see the sense in it.

Mac and windows sharing external drive on mac.

I am trying to access my external drive on my mac from my pc. Sharing is enabled but the drive doesn't show up. what are the options to do this? I have tried to find it by name command line in windows but no go. I also tried to mount it to the pc but no good the drive mounts but will not asign a drive letter and is not a readable format for XPpro.... Doh!

If you want the drive to be readable on both peecee and Mac, the drive should be formatted as a FAT32 volume which OSX can read and write to or as a NTFS volume which the Mac can read but not write to.
That is not correct.
Windoze does not recognize any Mac formats.
That's true, but Windows doesn't need to read Mac formats to access a network disk. The disk formatting is handled by the computer directly connected to the disk (which is the Mac). The network file access does not contain any disk formatting information and therefore it doesn't matter what format is used on the disk.
You can use SharePoints to make that drive visible to non-Admin users.

Opied files got corrupted in USB3 external drives connected to Macbook Pro, how to fix it?

I use USB3 connected external hard drives in my Macbook Pro mid 2012 (Yosemite 10.10.1) frequently. I had no problem until two months ago. This week I noticed a lot of corrupted files in one ext drive connected to USB3 port. Luckily I have a backup, and I copied back the files. But the files copied recently were also corrupted even though source files are fine. I spent a whole day trying to fix it using different methods of copy and options, e.g. erasing the drive, using cp, rsync, ditto and a combination of their options. I figured out that if I use cp or cp - R for copying single file or folder, it works fine, but using of rsync, ditto or recursive cp or finder's drag and drop result into a lot of corrupted files in the target drive. This is not the problem of external drive. I was surprised to notice that all files are copied perfectly when I used a old macbook (2008 model, it only has USB2 port, and OSX Mavericks). Since I have almost 2TB data to write, USB2 is very slow. I want to use USB3 of Macbook Pro 2012, but I am very disappointed to find out that USB3 in Yosemite is causing the trouble, writing out corrupted files. If anyone has a solution to this problem, or a second thought, Please suggest.

My guess here is there is some issue with the use of Paragon NTFS. Perhaps updating it or using another NTFS driver (like Tuxera, or its free alternative NTFS-3G) will work. All in all, using NTFS in write mode with these options will be using a non-supported approach for accessing your drive, which could lead to odd problems if Apple makes a change that interferes with the functions of these drivers. At other times, such drivers use inherently less stable approaches (such as the FUSE environment) that could lead to problems if not formatted correctly.
If your drive is working, and the formatting is checked out properly in Windows and other systems, then I'd suggest you check on your NTFS driver and update or replace it. Alternatively, if you only use the drive with your Mac, then consider formatting it to Apple's native Mac OS Extended. Lastly, if you use the drive with multiple operating systems, then consider using FAT32 or ExFAT as the format, as these are fully supported in OS X (unlike NTFS, which is only supported for reading).

Windows on external drive files

I read on dualbootguru.com that with a properly reformatted windows disk, it is possible to install windows on an external drive. However, the re-formatting process of this disk is extremely complicated. Does anyone one have pre-formatted files to download to save me a few hours? Thanks.

I opened the html but its contents are only available as a web page, so at least they're not lost (thank you!) and I can theoretically access the bookmarks.
However, accessing bookmarks this way is really impractical since I won't know if the bookmarks toolbar has the info I seek or not. This means opting to use the webpage excusively as the more complete of the two, meaning loss of the bookmarks toolbar functionality .
I want to be able to use the toolbar exclusively, which means finding a way to restore the 2yrs worth of bookmarks now missing from it due to corruption of the most recent backup json file.
Is there a way to display the html bookmarks backup as toolbar objects?

Windows NTFS External Drive and Permissions

I have a 250 gig Maxtor OneTouch I use for storing/backing up files from my PC (Windows XP Home Edition) In the past I have been able to use my external drives on both my Mac and PC without any problems. This time, however when I connect the drive, it mounts, but I only have "Read Only" access. I'm currenty using 10.3.9 and I am the administrator. Is this something I'm going to have to change in the PC or can I do it from the Mac? Thanks in advance!

Well, no I hadn't written to this drive from the Mac in the past. It was a new drive and I used it on the PC first. Would it be possible to maybe create a new partition, either on the Mac or the PC in a Mac readable format without destroying the information currently on it?

Some DVD's Won't Mount (Int or Ext Drive) Unless Re-Start

Intel 20" Core Duo iMac - OS X 10.4.7 (occurred with 10.4.6 as well)
A number of times now, I've seen this scenario:
Insert a DVD into either the internal SuperDrive, or my external Mad Dog firewire drive. Disc spins up, . . that's it. Never mounts.
At this point, no DVD is recognized in either drive (that is to say, it won't mount).
Re-start the Mac, put a known good DVD in either drive, and it works fine/mounts.
It seems as though a scratched or otherwise un-readable DVD is what kicks off this process, but what I find odd is that regardless of which drive I first encounter the problem with, there is no "seeing" a DVD in either drive unless I re-start.
Because I see the same thing with both drives, I'm feeling pretty certain it's not hardware, and I have repaired permissions. Any suggestions?

I was having a problem with playing homebrew DVDs--they would load/mount OK, DVD player would start, but they wouldn't play without painful pauses and skips. I saw a piece advice somewhere about going to System Preferences, bring up the CDs & DVDs pref pane, and in the "When you insert a video DVD" preference click on the drop down menu and select "Ignore" (of all things--sounded like a weird choice to me!). After changing this setting to the recommendation my DVDs would play just fine, I just had to launch DVD Player myself rather than it automatically opening. Don't know if this would help your problem, but it is easy to do, so you might give it a try.

Previously windows used external drive to be used in mac (and windows)

i´ve just bought a macbook and planned to use a couple of external drives i previously used on my pc with time machine and whatnot. only it seems they are write-protected in mac os, so they can´t be used as back-up drives. do i have to format them again using mac, or do it in windows, or is there a way around this? and can it be done so both mac and windows recognizes it as writable?

If the OPs intent is to use it with Time Machine, the external drive needs to be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) via Disk Utility. I believe there is a Windows app that permits viewing of HFS+ drives. Since you have a 'couple' of external HDDs, it's probably best to use a dedicated HDD just for TM backups.

Mac os 10.4 & windows on external drive

Hi All,
Back to mac after ~ 18 years so some things are "new" to me. I would like to install os 10.4 and windows on an external drive, while leaving 10.5.1 (I own full copies of each) on my macbook and be able to choose which to boot from. Is this possible? If so is a USB external or firewire required?

Well I thought it should be easy, but I must be missing something. I bought a 100GB HD for a laptop that didn't turn out to need it, so I thought it would be good to install 10.4.11 on it so I could use it to start up coomputers having HD problems. I put it into a USB "slim carrier", plugged it into my iBook, put the install disk into the superdrive and clicked install. When the iBook re-started and the installation steps showed up, the drive showed up, but the install program showed the drive as a non-installable location.
Is there another way to do this? Must it be in a firewire enclosure, or should USB work?
