MacPro3,1 triple monitor setup

Hi there!
I'm looking to expand my Apple 30" monitor setup with two (very cheap but highly acclaimed) Dell UltraSharp™ U2311H monitors. However, I'm unsure if I do or do not need an additional video card and if so, which one. I have an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with (I think) two DVI-I Dual Link ports. I've read that there are DVI-splitters, but I have been unable to find any conclusive information.
Does anyone know how I can do this?
Friendly greetings, D, Amsterdam.

Hi Grant!
Thanks for your help earlier ;-)
I hope you might be able to shed some light on a little problem I have with my triple monitor setup. I bought the following items:
Two Dell Professional P2411H 61cm (24") LED monitors.
Two MiniDisplayPort to DVI adapters.
I've took your advice on the card and also got one ATI RADEON HD 5770 1GB-ZML card.
The monitors, in combination with the adapters and the card ... it all works, but there's one limitation I believe shouldn't be there.
The problem is this: either the hardware or software is only allowing me to connect two displays in total. If I connect all three displays, only the Dell monitors are able to connect. If I disconnect one Dell monitor, the Apple 30" display goes live. So, whatever in whatever combination or order I try to connect the displays, only two screens are connecting simultaneously.
Do you, or does someone else know how to fix this? Would be great to fix this soon and become the pixonaut of my own digitale cockpit!

    Yes, it works.

  • Triple monitor setup with my mac mini.

I need to run three separate monitors on my mac mini. No gaming involved here, multiple screens will only be used for display/advertising purposes so in my opinion the mac mini is capable enough to display different images on each screen.
I have 3 Samsung 2253LW running at a native resolution of 1680x1050. My initial thought was to get a Matrox TripleHead2Go but that would limit me to a resolution of 1280x1024. As far as I know running below native resolution would result in blurred images on the lcd.
Instead I would want to know if connecting via mini-dvi to vga a Matrox DualHead2Go running at 1680x1050 each for 2 screens plus having the third screen connected via mini displayport to dvi running at 1680x1050 work? (Sorry for the long question)
I do know that the Mac Mini could drive two displays at a time using the mini dvi and display port. Since the Matrox DualHead2Go works by making 2 monitors seem as if it were one bigger monitor, would this setup work? I badly need answers fast.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
A usb to dvi adaptor might also give the intended result?
Not sure if this would be cheaper than the matrox device, or if the mini is capable of running a third monitor the usb port, but I saw one advertise recently...

  • Triple Monitor setup for e9270t

I have two 24-inch monitors running at 1920x1200 on my e9270t with GTX260 (1792MB), W7 64-bit. I have an unused 23-inch monitor I'd like to use. I didn't think I could just slap any old video card in. Recommendations?
This is not a gaming rig, I just like lots of real estate for surfing, debugging, etc.
    Thanks.

I called HP and asked if they had a three monitor set up, and was told yes they could customize one.  Told HP that I am a Mac person and am new to the PC world.  Had never run more than one monitor, but that the software I need to run takes three monitors and likes PC's better. Told them the ram, speed, etc that I needed to run, along with the 3 monitors.  They said they could easily provide a system to do that.  I asked it directions for hook up come with the system, and was told it's easy, you will be able to easily tell which hooks to what.  It will be out of the boxes and hooked up in no time.  It's easy. All the parts will be there and since you know computers, even though a different platform, it will be easy, you can do it.
Well, not that easy! Or I am a total idiot.  Not a good intoduction to the PC world!!!!  Gee, with Macs all the parts come in one shipment and ALL the pieces are there and all the cables are there and even easy to follow directions come with...All seems to be not so with HP!!!   Shipment after shipment came and was piled into one corner until the final box, the cpu arrived.
The ports on the back of the monitors and ports on the ATI Radeon HD 5570 2GB DDR2 graphics card are as follows.  I have managed to hook DVI to DVI and HDMI to HDMI and have two monitors up and running.  Now the third is the pain in the.....  It's been over a week of headache.  How do I hook them up?  5 or 6 calls now to HP tech support and it's not on their screen so they don't know.  Nice!!!!  That's why I am asking for more expert help.  You guys.  If I can't get this resolved in a day or two, the whole system is going back to HP and I will never ever ever ever use HP again, ever!!!
The back of each HP monitor (2 are 2311z and 1 is 2310e) has three ports..VGA (blue), DVI-D (white), and HDMI (black)
The graphics card has three ports.. DVI (white), HDMI (black), and DP   There is an adapter for VGA but is doesn't seem to fit into the DP port.  Nothing they gave me fits into the DP port.  I have just come back from both Office Max and Office Depot and they don't have any cables or adaptors with a DP port. I have absolutely no clue.  All I know is that I was promised it would be easy to set up and all the parts would be here, and it would run three monitors!
HP put in this GC based on my asking for a working three monitor system, so at this point I presume that this card will handle three monitors.(gee, I guess that's a lot to presume though)  That's what HP reads off their screen. (they can read and are polite, just don't know anything)  No one there at HP seems to have actually hooded up three monitors before.
Help me know how to hood up this mess and get it working, please.
More and more frustrated every day, guess it shows how much I love HP at this point!!
(And the jerk at HP who gave me this cpu with the speaker setting deep within the software turned off just isn't funny!  No not the mute and not the volume but the actual speaker on and off that controls the jacks was set to off in the software....that took a week to find and fix.  And of course, it wasn't on their screen, so HP tech support couldn't help!  It was only by accident I found that setting!)   So far I think I'm doing quite well for a Mac person.
OK, sorry, back to the point..how do I hook up the GC to the third monitor and get it to work?

I have a similar issue.  I currently have a triple monitor setup, a 1920x1080 + the laptop at 1920x1080 +  another on 1600 x 900.  this works fine.  When I swap out the 1600x900 for another monitor at 1920x1080, i get the same error.  I can get any combination of 2 monitors working, and I can get all 3 working if the 3rd is at a reduced resolution (1400x900), but at full resolution i just get the error.  The same setup works fine in windows at 1920x1080.

  • Linux 3.11 breaks triple monitor support on intel graphics

I just ran pacman -Syu, observed linux (3.10.10-1 -> 3.11.1-1), and found that I can no longer use more than 2 monitors simultaneously. When I try to configure 3 or 4 monitors with xrandr or arandr, I get an error message like "xrandr: configure crtc 2 failed".

My symptoms seem similar to Unable to configure 3 display multihead / X fails to start with 3 displays connected, although that was reported on linux 3.4.

Googling around, I found a few more people with what looks like the same problem commenting at the bottom of wrpll sharing not implemented (3x HDMI/DVI screens).
I have Intel graphics card and it supports triple head setup very well. ... I updated kernel to 3.11.1 after it appeared in Archlinux's repo and one of screens stopped working. I tried to fix it with xrandr but I got only "xrandr: Configure crtc failed" errors and these in Xorg.0.log:
I have a similar setup and am experiencing the same thing. Downgrading to 3.10 fixed the issue. I'm also happy to help fix this.
But apparently it's not the correct bug since someone said "if triple display worked and regressed in recent kernels then you have a different bug."
I think I should report this somewhere, but I'm not sure I understand exactly where (linux or xorg or arch?)

  • Triple monitor: Sapphire HD5670 512MB (*non* eyefinity version)

Those reading will know that, in order to have up to 3 displays showing content in a single graphics card, if it's an AMD card then you need a certain feature known as EyeFinity.
In particular, I am talking about tihs card:
    http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalo … CDAQ8wIwAQ
You will notice in the picture that this one has  DP, but there is another version that has VGA port in its place. I courd not for the life of me find it again, but at the time of buying the concern was CRT usage, so a VGA port was important. I did not know about EyeFinity at the time.
This guide is for people whe made mistakes like this.
This is typically the case. With my card in particular, you cannot get triple monitor in Windows, because the drivers prevent it (it is possible in Linux).
    I said prevent.
If a card has 3 video outputs, each with their own RAMDAC (or none, if its digital-only), then why can you not use all 3 at the same time?
Typically in such a setup, if it does not have EyeFinity, then the connectors are usually:
    VGA, DVI, HDMI (my card)
    or
    DVI, DVI, VGA (other cards)
    or
    DVI DVI, HDMI
    or
    HDMI, HDMI, DVI
In other words, all ef these types of card without support for EyeFinity, do not have:
    DisplayPort connector
This is a rather crude way of getting it to work, but any solution is a selution still.
Well, here is a simple way I get triple monitor on my card that does not support EyeFinity:
    VGA lcd in the VGA
    DVI lcd in the DVI
DVI lcd in the HDMI (using HDMI-DVI adapter)
The HDMI is disconnected via a coupler, before I boot into Linux. I have a script with these commands:
xrandr --auto --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024
    xrandr --auto --output DVI-0 --mode 1280x1024 --right-of VGA-0
    xrandr --auto --output HDMI-0 --mode 1280x1024 --right-of DVI-0
(run it as a bash script)
With the HDMI (via HDMI-DVI, then a DVI coupler, then DVI to DVI going to the monitor) disconnected at the coupler, I run this script.
Of course, this script sets triple monitor, but right now only the DVI and VGA are hooked up.
Once it has done, I have dual monitor.
Then, connect at the coupler (or "gender changer") on the HDMI output. Now all 3 displays are connected, but you still have dual monitor.
Run the above commands again, and you will see triple monitor.
Now that you have solved the problem of getting tri-monitor in X, if you look at your TTYs you will notice that only one of the screens is showing. In X (usually terminal 7 or 8), simply disconnect the HDMI at the coupler for a few seconds, then reconnect it.
Now you to your TTY (Ctrl-Alt-F{1-6}), and it will show text on all 3 screens (albeit duplicated).
    Thoughts,
I am not sure as to why this is possible to do. I see it as "tricking" the other incapable hardware into outputting on 3 displays, but it seems penfectly functional.
My guess is that this actually is an EyeFinity card, in the sense that it is the same base an which other cards (with DP, and thus, EyeFinity) are built, but that this particular card can be used in the same way, to get triple monitor.
Either that, or this is a "bug" in X11/XrandR (if it is a bug, please do not fix it, I like my triple monitors, I call it a feature).
I know that this certainly works in Xubuntu too, I tried it on a Live CD.
I tried removing the graphics card and trying this on the intergrated graphics (HD 4290/4250 I think), which also has the same 3 outputs, but the hardwas itself actually enforces a maximum of 2 monitors. If you have DVI and HDMI hooked up, it defaults to HDMI, but masquerades as DVI (where the drivers are concerned). You could use this hack, but then it would still not work because the hardware itself, not the driver softawre, is enforcing it.
The board is: ASUS M4a89GTD PRO

    Hello,
i get the same messages without any problems for my intel card.
You can read more about it in this thread:
    http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-85 … ec66f93bf2
There are a fair amount of people who have posted their /proc/mtrr there, you can compare yours to them.
In the end they come to the conclusion, that uncachable entries are not a problem, for the most systems.
However uncachable regions of 1024MB seem to be too large.
On my mtrr the biggest uncachable entry is 64MB.
So you might get improvement from solving this.

I just bought a 12 core with Quatro 4000 and 5770, I want to use dual monitor setup, monitors are NEC with Spectraview-II.  How do I connect?  4000 only has 1 Display Port and 1 DVI.  5770 has 2 of each, if I use both 5770 Display Ports, does the 4000 contribute any work at all?  I read where on a PC they would work together, but on a MAC they do not.
I read that Display Port has higher band width than DVI, NEC monitors for best performance they recommend using DIsplay Port.
When I was setting this up I looked at a Nvidia Quadro 4000, unfortunately it was for PC, it had 2 Display Ports, in the Mac version they reduce it to one.  I did not think there could be a difference.
Mainly want to use it for CS6 and LR4.
    How to proceed???
I do not want to use the Quadro 4000 for both, that would not optimize both monitors, one DP and 1 DVI.  Using just the 5770 would work but I do not think the 4000 would be doing anything, and the 5770 has been replaced by the 5870.more bandwidth.
Any ideas, I am a Mac newbie, have not ever tried a Mac Pro, just bought off ebay and now I have these problems.
As a last resort I could sell both and get a 5870.  That would work, I'm sure of that, it's just that I wanted the better graphics card.
    Thanks,
    Bill

    The Hatter,
I am a novice at Mac so I read all I can.  From what I understand the NEC monitors I bought require Display Port for their maximum performance.  The GTX 680 only has DVI outputs.  Difference from what I understand is larger bandwidth with the DP.
You said I have the 4000 for CUDA.  I am not all that familiar with CUDA and when I do read about it I do not understand it.
A concern I have is, that if I connect the 2 high end NEC monitors via the 5770, using it's 2 Display Ports I would have nothing connected to the 4000.  Is the 4000 doing anything with nothing connected?  I read where in a PC system the 2 cards would interact but in a Mac system they do not.
Bottom line, as I see it, the 4000 will not be useful at all to me, since I want a dual monitor set-up.
So far the 5870 seems the best choice, higher band width than the 5770, and it has 2 Display Ports to optimize the NEC monitors.
I'm not sure how fine I am splitting hairs, nor do I know how important those hairs are.  I am just trying to set up a really fast reliable system that will mainly be used for CS6 and LR4.  Those NEC monitors are supposed to be top notch.

  • External NTSC monitor setup

When I use an external NTSC monitor connected to an Apple DVI to video adaptor then to a Radeon 800XT video card I have many crashes. It seems like these are caused by the External monitor setup. I would to know what sort step up others are using for external video. And what kind of success you are having with them.
    Thanks

I to have had the same problem, in fact, I just posted about it a few days ago. Hopefully Apple's monitoring this forum and looking at the issue. The only solution I've found is to disable the external preview, which is quite frustrating. Just a question have your crashed happened while you're working or when you perform application switching. I've only had problems when I apple-tab to another program and then do the same to get back into Motion.

  • Dual monitor setup - need laptop on the left

    Hi All
I'm running a dual monitor setup - specifically a HP G72 laptop and a widescreen monitor. I use the monitor as the default and sometimes I want to use the Laptop as a secondary screen for watching TV etc. My desktop is Enlightenment, I just changed to it from Gnome. My issue is that I want the laptop to be on the left of the monitor - that's how it is physically positioned - but when I switch the Laptop screen on all my applications shift over to the laptop screen. I've written 2 scripts, attached to hotkeys, one to turn the laptop off and the other to turn the laptop on. The script to turn the laptop on is as follows:
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1600x900 --pos 1600x0 --rotate normal
    --output VGA1 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --left-of LVDS1
This works fine, applications stay where they should be, except that the physical position is incorrect; VGA1 should be to the right of LVDS1 like this:
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1600x900 --pos 1600x0 --rotate normal
    --output VGA1 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --right-of LVDS1
However, when I use the second script all of the applications shift to the laptop but at least the physical position is correct. The issue appears to be something to do with laptops, almost as though when it's a laptop the default monitor is forced to be on the left. Has anybody got any suggestions how to get around this issue?
    Thanks
    Richard

This is due to your window manager treating the two monitors as a larger 'desktop' area - that combined with your specification of the pos=0x0 you are telling it to do this.
If you have only the VGA output on, the top left corner of the VGA monitor is 0x0.  If you open a window, and it is placed 10 pixels in and down from the top left, it is at coordinates 10x10 in the x session.  Then you turn on the laptop monitor and specify that the top left corner of the laptop monitor should now bo considered 0x0 - but nothing is done to move the windows, so the window with coordinates 10x10 is now near the top left of the laptop monitor.
I see 3 possible ways of acheiving what you want:
    1) swap the "pos" parameters in your xrandr commands so that the monitor on the left is always at 0x0 and the one on the right is always at 1920x0 (or whatever).  This will leave a large area of available X desktop that is not visible - I don't know how your window manager will treat this.  It might try to map windows on the laptop screen space even though that screen is not on.  I know openbox is easy to configure where it tries to place windows.
    2) Keep the VGA monitor always at 0x0, but place the laptop monitor at a negative offset when you want it on.  I don't actually know if X allows negative coordinates like that, but it's worth a shot.
    3) Configure your window manager, or use a different window manager, so that it is aware of the two screens and treats them reasonably (e.g. moves windows when the desktop area is changed).

  • Four monitor setup on 2013 mac pro using old 23" Cinema Displays

My current monitor setup on a 2009 mac pro is four monitors.  Three 23" Apple Cinema Displays (aluminum, mid 2000's) and one large Sony HDTV mounted to the wall as a fourth monitor.
I achieve this via 2 Geforce 120 video cards, each with a mini display port and a Dvi port each.
My question is, can I retain this same exact monitor setup on a new 2013 Mac pro cylinder?  If so, what adapters will be needed, and do they all plug into the thunderbolt ports?
Hearing all kinds of nightmares about multiple monitor problems with the new MP so want to be sure this will work before I drop big bucks.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the quick reply!
For the Tv I'm currently going VGA out of that to a Dvi adapter into the old Mac Pro.  The 3 Cinema Displays are all ether direct Dvi to the video card and two I have to use a Dvi to mini display port adapter.
So for the new Mac Pro, assuming I don't use the HDMI port, I would need Dvi to minidisplayport adapters for each of the 3 cinema displays and a VGA to minidisplayport for the TV?
EDIT: And the mini display ports may as well all be active I guess, and they need to plug into the usb bus for power?
    Thanks

  • Maximising Safari on a dual-monitor setup (GUI behaviour in Window XP Pro)

When I maximise Safari on the 2nd monitor of my two-monitor setup, it disappears off-screen (but its icon still remains in the XP taskbar) and I am unable to bring it back into the viewable area. Consequently, I have to close Safari and reopen it to continue.
When I maximise Safari on the 1st monitor it fills the screen as I'd expect.
    Windows XP Pro

Confirmed on another Dell D610/Windows XP dual-monitor setup.
However, when I maximise safari on the secondary monitor it still appears on the task bar, enabling me to right-click and Restore the window (whereupon it reappears).

  • Dual monitor setup MBA 2013

    Hello Everyone,
This is my first post on the Apple Support Community.
Nice to meet al of you!
    System information:
    Macbook Air medio 2013
    Model MacBookAir6,2
    Intel Core i7 1,7GHZ
    8GB
    512GB SSD
I am wondering if it is possible to have a dual monitor setup using the thunderbolt feature daisy-chain.
The configuration i am looking for is:
MBA --> Belkin Thunderbolt™ Express Dock (for using gigabit ethernet) --> Dell U2414H --> Dell U2414H
    Specs:
    Belkin Thunderbolt™ Express Dock = http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F4U055/
    Dell U2414H = http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&sku=860-BB CG
Do i have a chance this could work?
I'm looking forward to hearing from you all.
    Thanks!
    Kind regards,

    Hello,
I had the same problem with a nVidia GT120 card (2009 Mac Pro standard). OSX wouldn't show the gray screen on the 3090, even when it was connected alone (to the DVI port). Also, the login screen would always revert to the secondary display (connected thru the mini display port to DVI adapter).
    After login, all was well.
Now I've solved the problem with an nVidia GTX 285 card. The 3090 is connected to the n.1 DVI port and the secondary display (a 1600x1200 Eizo L997) to the n.2 DVI port, and the Mac Pro boots correctly on the 3090 (gray screen and everything, at full 2560x1600 resolution).
Note that the first time I booted up the Mac after replacing the GT120 with the GTX 285 I had the same problem, and solved it by disconnecting the secondary display and then rebooting with the 3090 alone. Now everything works as it should.
Dont't know if there is a bug somewhere (EFI, maybe) of if the GT120 and your ATI are simply unable to work at full resolution before OSX desktop loading.

  • Dual monitor setup with seperate resolutions

    hey guys!
i currentley run thye latest version of archlinux with the cinnamon desktop environment and an nvidia geforce 7300SE graphics card.
im running a dual monitor setup with one 27" 1920x1080 monitor and one 27" 1024X768 monitor
because they have the same physical size they line up perfectley but because the resolution is different programs/mouse cursor movement doesnt, is there any way (without changing the resolutions) to compensate this effect so that in the eyes of linux/cinnamon the monitors line up so that for example dragging a window goes seamlessley between the 2 monitors.
i HAVE found out the panning option in the nvidia x server settings, but that really isnt what i am looking for...

A magnifier following the window down to the pixel, zooming to the exact size of 540 pixels the 384 pixels window could create an illusion of just that. It would be highly impractical however, not mention all the hacking time. Even if you would manage to get two screen with different sized icons, so that they match visually, the windows and fonts resizing on the fly, wmctrl might help with windows alone, no their themes (buttons, borders thickness etc.), you would still be left with a visually differently sized mouse cursor. Technically such a feat should be possible, but who is going to code it? Nvidia?

  • Dual monitor setup flashes constantly

I am trying to set up a dual monitor setup with a Lenovo Thinkcentre Edge computer.  I reset the BIOS to enable multimonitor support and IGD Active Video.  One monitor is plugged into the VGA port.  But when I plug the second monitor into the DVI-D port, both monitors flash constantly and the speakers make the sound of a device being disconnected.  Unplugging the DVI-D monitor stops the problem on the VGA monitor.  I checked the drivers and they are all up to date.  Any ideas?

    Bad cable?
