Macromedia Flex Server
Hello all,
I have three questions about the Macromedia Flex Server for the Visual Composer.
1. Do I need the Macromedia Flex Server only for Design Time or also for the Run Time?
2. Do I need a licence or is everthing included in the SAP Analytics Package (NW04s) ?
3. The Flex Server is installed on the J2EE Engine of the WebAS?
Regards, Ingo
Hello,
1. Both for design time and runtime , this is obvious as you get a flash screen when u run the VC ui compiled through flex compiler.
2. No Idea
3. No Idea.

Have you used Macromedia Flex?
Have you used Macromedia Flex? What's your opinion of it? My manager is good at
latching onto the flavor-of-the-week, but things I've read about Flex makes it sound
pretty good. Does anyone have any war stories?
Thanks,
LaszloFrom what I understand, Flex can be compared, roughly to JSP:
JSP:mixes html markup (typically) and jsp tags with Java and JavaScript in a text file (*.jsp).
The jsp-engine compiles that and what's delivered to the client's browser is html+JavaScript.
Flex: mixes XML markup with STL-like tags and tags for controls (they claim dozens, including tree
and calendar controls, editable comboxes etc...) and tags for layout (think LayoutManagers).
The event handlers are written in ActionScript which is supposed to be very JavaScript-like (and
in one place I read it was statically typed, hurrah!). Again this goes in a text file (*.wxml).
The Flex engine compile *.wxml files into flash programs (*.swf) and delivers this to Flash running
on the client. Flash, not the browser, executes the dynamic content.
Here are some of my concerns and non-concerns:
The Ubiquity of Penetration (is that an episode of Oz or what?) Flash is on a lot of desktops, but
Macromedia plays Three Card Monty by not pointing out that Flex needs the latest version (7)
to run, and that version is not everywhere, yet. But as their surveys show, it may be everywhere within a year.
This is a non-concern for me. I write apps for gov't employees so I've got a different issue: many of them
work in the boonies where their LAN support is execrable. And on top of that, their desktops are so screwed
down, the only thing they can install are browser plug-ins. So Flash fits.
The cost. Flex retails for $12,000 USD. That's seems a lot to me for something that's just in
the presentation layer.
This is version 1.0. Flash may be stable but how buggy is Flex?
Where's the Java?. ActionScript is supposed to be Java-like, but what would be cool would being
able use a subset of Java and the API for the dynamic content. This could be compiled on the server-side
and something like byte code could be sent to Flash to execute.
How fast and responsive are the Flash programs?
How big are the Flash programs generated by Flex to download? And how good are browsers at
caching flash programs? Do they use the same mechanism as for caching images? I'd hate to
redownload a flash program over a dialup line when bouncing between screens.
How good are the controls that Flex delivers? How does it compare to Swing, say. How comprehensive
Is their set of events?
What do you need on the server-side? Flex communicates to sever apps via (1) Web Services
(2) remote objects or (3) http calls, among other things. The Flex engine itself is a web-app, and
they list their system requirements as WebSphere 5+ (although it runs in Tomcat 5.0). Unfortunately,
our production admins only support WebSphere 4 Server.
Aside: I went to a product demo on Monday, and I have to say salesmanship in software products
creeps me out. Maybe because I came into programming through the back door, from math and logic,
but at demos I feel like I'm being sold a used car. The presenters kept referring to ROI. What do I know
about ROI? I thought they were talking about Le fils do roi... -
Flex mobile project standalone flex server resets to J2EE and can not change
Developing an Android mobile project with FB 4.5. Set original project-->properties-->flex server to standalone with coldfusion as server. After setting web root, Root URL and Coldfusion root folder app works fine with CF. Sometime during development, flex server gets set to J2EE and CF access halts. Go back into project-->properties-->flex server and reset server to 'standalone' with original settings. click Apply or OK and assume that it is reset but it does not. Go back into flex server settings and it is still J2EE. I have seen this issue before and can not resolve it or find any other threads where there is a resolution to this. My only way to continue is to start a new mobile project, import the files and continue. This is not an acceptable way to design any mobile project!! HELP!!

Clarification required regarding Flex Server
hi
I have been studying about the new flex 2 technology and have
downloaded the flex builder 2trail. I am able to build flex
application successfully and also have been able to deploy it on
Windows Office live . But i am very much confused about Flex Server
facility. First of all is Flex Server and Flex Data Services the
same. In the documentation provided in the Adobe website the Flex
server is said to be used to compile the mxml to appropriate swf,
but i have not downloaded any Flex server then how am i able to
compile the mxml to flash application.
Can some one plz give me a more clear idea about Flex Server
or give some useful link to read about it.Be happy to clear this up:
Flex 2 SDK (software development kit) is the Flex user
interface (we call it the 'framework') and the mxmlc and compc
compilers. This is free. It enables you to use HTTPService and
WebServices.
Flex Builder 2 is Eclipse (or a plug-in for Eclipse) and
includes the Flex 2 SDK. Which means it comes with the compilers.
Flex Server is part of Flex Data Services. Flex Server
includes Flex 2 SDK and allows you to deploy MXML and AS source
files to your web server so that when the main MXML file is
requested, it will be dynamically compiled into a SWF. We call this
the 'web tier' compiler.
Flex Data Services also includes Flex Data Management and
Messaging.
In addition to these there is also Flex Charting and the
ColdFusion 7.0.2 Flex Connectivity Kit.

Is the Flex server required?
Does anyone know if I have to do anything special on the
server to be able to use flex? Can I just upload to my webserver
without making any modifications? No to run compiled Flex SWF's you do not need a "Flex"
server. The exception is if you are using some of the Flex Data
Services (FDS) features.
Flex compiled SWF's are Flash files that require Flash Player

Macromedia application server is unreachable
Hi, we are running a virtual server (p2v) copy of our
production and dev CF6MX sites.
The virtual copy of the dev server, works fine.
However, in production we are getting the dreaded "Macromedia
application server is unreachable or it does not have a mapping to
process this request" server error. Our prod server was installed
differently as it was originally intended to be a load-balanced
server so the services in prod have "Macromedia" in their names,
not in dev.
I've re-booted the server, restarted IIS, ran the
bin/jrun.exe utility, and am still getting the error. The jrun
utility yielded this message: "warning Could not find valid
replication peer- assuming this server is first server running in
replication group." I'm not sure if this is a show-stopper or not.
I also looked at the server log and nothing looked awry.
Any other ideas ? I've checked the forum here, and someone
posted a link for this, but the link was dead..."warning Could not find valid replication peer-assuming htis
server is first server running in replication group" is telling you
this is the first instance to start up. Not a big deal (unless
you're expecting other instances to be there already or this wasn't
the first instance you expected to start).
If you changed the name of the server or IP addresses during
your p-to-v process then the xml files may be trying to contact the
wrong IP addresses.
When I get the application server is unreachable error, a
quick iisreset or restarting the World Wide Web Publishing service
will fix it. Sometimes a race condition happens and IIS and JRun
seem to grab the connector at the same time and that error ends up
showing up. -
Macromedia Flex Integration.
In 9.0.3 there was an integretion between Macromedia Flex and JDev I'm not able to find in 9.0.5.
Anyway is there any plan to integrate Flex with JDev ?
Is there any way to integrate it with ADF ?
Tks
TullioIt is up to the Macromedia guys to build this type of integration, you might want to ask on one of their forums.
I'm not sure that there was integration with Flex in previous versions. And if there was one I think it only went out as far as invoking Flex from JDeveloper - which is something you can achieve using the tools->external tools menu option. -
What is macromedia application server is unreachable

Macromedia Flex app talking to Portal
Hi All,
I need my Macromedia Flex app to communicate with my Portal. I was wondering what is the best way to achieve this:
1. Calling a JSP and sending some XML containing the data, or
2. Developing a Portal Service then exposing it as a Web Service.
Also, with the Portal service how do i get hold of the request object?
Thanks in advance,
Raj1. in my opinion option 1 would be better and you can easily massage the data and send it as the way you want it.
2. other option would be use Flex-Ajax Bridge. where you can create flex controls at runtime from javascript.
<a href="http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flex-Ajax_Bridge">Flex-Ajax Bridge</a>
look about for my weblog on FA bridge with BSP in couple of days time.

Unfortunately I purchase a nice widescreen laptop cursed with
XP Home and
haven't made the migration to XP Pro yet. Can you get Flex
Server to run on
XP Home so I can test some of the applications I am building?
Wally Kolcz
Developer / Support
ProjectProofing.comHi Wally,
With Flex 2.0, you don't necessarily need a server to compile
and test Flex Applications. You can compile an mxml into a swf and
run in your web browser.
Once you get better acquainted with Flex 2.0, you can install
a server based on the application requirements.

Server Error - Macromedia application server(s) are unreachable
For my test environment, I've got a ColdFusion 8 instance
running on Windows 2003 Server. Everything was fine until I
rebooted the server. Then I started getting an error message:
quote:
Either the Macromedia application server(s) are unreachable
or none of them has a mapping to process this request.
My first thought was an application mapping error or
something happened to the .cfm mappings. Everything checked out
fine though. So I looked in the wsconfig log files and saw this.
quote:
2008-06-04 16:54:58 jrISAPI[ 760:1048] could not initialize
proxy for 127.0.0.1:51800
2008-06-04 16:54:58 jrISAPI[ 760:1048] Couldn't initialize
from remote server, JRun server(s) probably down.
Something was definitely running on port 51800 though since I
could telnet to it. No clue why it couldn't initialize. Any ideas?
Thanks.
SteveFrom what I can tell, this error displays when the web server connector exists, but JRUN (coldfusion) server is not running.
I have spent 3 days trying to repair this error message on my Windows XP CF9 Standard Edition. We had coincidentally made some network changes which I assumed right away was the culprit. When I would try and start the JRUN server manually (jrun.exe) it would fail and the log would specify an error to the effect of:
"RMI transport layer does not exists." <---- not the whole error. But it should be specific enough for someone else with the same trouble to find.
I deleted the web server connector from wsconfig.exe and tried to re-add it. Which also failed:
"Could not connect to any JRun/ColdFusion servers on host xxxxx.
Possible causes:
-Server not running:
-----Start Macromedia Jrun4 or ColdFusion 9 server
-Server running:
-----JNDI listen port in jndi.properties blocked by TCP/IP filtering or firewall
-----host restriction in security.properties blocking communication with server"
I knew then (since JRun was not running) I wouldn't be able to re-add the connector until I resolved the JRUN "RMI transport layer does not exists" error. After 2 days of unsuccessfully making sure I had done everything I could to allow the ports that JRUN needed, I was still convinced this was a port issue. I also noticed that MSSQL Express (unrelated service) was not starting either. STRANGE!!
Decided to run MalwareBytes and after a "Quick Scan", it did find a few infections. I removed the infections and MalwareBytes requested a reboot, rebooted, and VIOLA!! Working.
If your ColdFusion configuration was working (in my case for at least a year) prior to a reboot, and then suddenly can't start itself, be sure to run a scan to remove any infections. I'm assuming my infection was blocking the ports that JRun needed to startup. Good Day!!!
