Macromedia MX 2004 on Intel iMac?

Could someone please respond with any issues they have running Studio MX 2004 on the new iMacs. I have a small web design business and need to know whether its worth the switch. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
-Ron

I guess I should have been more clear when I said "switch". I am a PC user, but am pretty sick of spending a good portion of my time tweaking and fixing Windows faults. A good friend is a Mac owner, and I was thinking the new Intel's are a good place to jump into the Mac game. So, I guess there is no way to tell if Macromedia running on my PC now will be faster or slower on the new iMac.
Another reason for the switch is to streamline my workflow. The PC interface, though I've skinned and customized it to no end, is just severely clunky and well "unsmooth". I am hoping the iMac and OSX will help me focus while working, and remove a lot of the distraction when working with a PC. Am I living in a dreamworld, or is this close the mark?

  • How to transfer files from older iMac G5 (2004) to intel iMac?

Hi - I have an older iMac G5 (circa 2005) that is sharting to behave like an older desktop.  We have a 2 year old Intel iMac and I suspect that I will soon be transferring files from the G5 to the Intel iMac.  Any suggestions please on the best course of action in moving files over.  With Thanks!

You can use Target Disk Mode to transfer data, like your user folder, or you can use Migratin Assistant.

  • Macromedia Flash MX Professional 2004 not running on Intel iMac

SIGH. This is added to the enormous list of problems I've had with my new Intel iMac.
I'm a pro user and am confused as to why Dreamweaver MX will run but I can't get Flash MX 2004 Professional to run. It starts up, loads fonts and what not, shows a blank timeline for the new document as it should and as soon as the GUI for Flash comes up ka-boom it crashes.
Then I get the general "unexpectedly quit" notification.
Anyone else having this problem? Is Rosetta a synonym for Lucifer?
This is what the error says if it's of any use to anyone:

I'm on a Mac and don't had this problem. But I do watch for
video issues on this site and haven't seen this – I might
have missed a few, but most Flash users are on Windows so I think
it would be common if it were something wrong with Flash in
    general.
Then again, what do I know? Because the more I'm thinking
about it the more I think I might have had this problem. But I
really can't remember. And sorry to say the solution was to not use
the import function to edit my videos.
You also might want to just see if it is the format of the
file you are importing. Perhaps a different source will work
better? I'm just grasping at straws here.
If you have many of these to do and a budget I suggest
getting a third party tool like Squeeze. Otherwise if you have some
third party editor you might want to use that.
    Good luck!

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • New intel iMac with reduction on Microsoft Office 2004

    Hi.
I am seriously considering buying a new iMac Intel Core Duo. If i order before the end of january along with Microsoft office, i can get upto 50% off office.
I know that the current version of office will run fine on the new iMac Intel Core Duo using 'Rosetta' and that they are developing a new version to be released in march that will run native on the intel imac.
Therefore, if i buy office with my iMac now, I will not have the native version and I will have to buy the new version again?
I am quite confused and really unsure what to do?
Would it be worth me buying office now?
Will i be able to upgrade to the new version for free?
.... I dont understand why apple are selling a version of office with the new iMacs if it is not even the proper software.
Please help me as I am unsure of what to do.
    Thanks a lot in advance...

I'm not positive on this but I think I remember, during the keynote speech, the woman that was from the MSBU saying the updates would be available for download at no charge. Might be worth looking at that part of the keynote to be sure. I don't remember the date she said they would be available though.

I was wrong. I just watched that part of the keynote again and there will be updates available for download for free but not the universal binaries. My bad.

  • HP Color LaserJet Problems with intel iMac

Can anyone give me advice on the following:-
When I try to print from my wife's new intel iMac 20" to our HP Color LaserJet 2550L, it doesn't work and print center gives me the following error message ... "The process "hppostprocessing" terminated unexpectedly on signal 5" .
The printer is connected directly to the iMac via USB. It's not on a network.
I ran the HP Color LaserJet installer from the original CD that came with the printer and when that didn't work I downloaded another (latest) Color LaserJet installer (dated 2004) from the HP website. Still getting the same error message from PrintCenter.
When I look at the HP installer log, it appears that the installer tried several times without success to install plugins into the PPD folder (HD->Library->Printers->PPD).
After trying installation and checking out my PPD folder (above) there is nothing in it.
This printer has been (still) working fine with our older 20inch iMac.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Same happened with my photosnart. Here is part of the email from HP
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
I understand from your email that you are not able to print to your
photosmart 1218 printer from your new imac.
I believe you are correct when you mention the glitch between the new
    Intel processor in the iMac.
I have checked the Apple website and noted the pre-installed printer
drivers that ship with this operating system, do NOT include drivers for
the Photosmart 1218 printer. There are Gimp print drivers available for
the Photosmart P1000 printer. They may work, but provide only basic
printer functionality. (see the Apple document listed below).
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303057#hpdrivers
I understand that our engineers are investigating the driver issue with
the Intel-based Macs, however, I cannot provide you with an expected
date of resolution. Your printer was manufactured in 2000, and the most
recent drivers are from Aug 2005. These drivers were created before the
    Intel based macs were available.

  • Intel iMacs

So this is the forum for Intel iMacs? Cool.
First, could someone explain (or link me to) more detailed pages about the Duo Core chip, Rosetta, and Universal? I've seen the APple pages, but they didn't seem to elaborate, or maybe I just couldn't find it.
And, I noticed the MacBook's iSight says "and twice the resolution" under it. Does the same go for the iMac?
Anyone order one yet? I'd love too, but just don't have the money.
    Thanks,
    Kyle-

You could look at the Intel Core Duo product page here:
    http://www.intel.com/products/processor/coreduo/index.htm
It's effectively a successor to the Pentium M chip. Aside from having dual cores, it has better floating point math (useful in games and hard number-crunching), SSE3 extensions, and is reworked to use less power overall.
Rosetta is effectively emulation, but it's a relatively efficient kind of emulation and one that strives for transparency to the user (i.e. it doesn't have to initialize a special environment to run). This doesn't mean that things will necessarily run as well as they did on a native PowerPC chip, but it does mean that you can keep at least some of your software until you're ready to get a native version. For example, Office 2004 should run well enough.
Universal refers to universal applications (or rather, universal binaries, since that's what you actually launch). These are programs that have native code for both Intel AND PowerPC Macs - so either system will treat it as a native program and run it quickly. If it's not a universal app and you're using an Intel-based Mac, it'll have to run in Rosetta.
Regarding the iSight, I think it's functionally similar to what the iMac G5 already had.

  • Does StudioMX run ok on Intel iMac?

I'm thinking about buying a 20inch Intel iMac, but don't know if I can use Macromedia's Studio MX on it okay. I know that Dreamweaver (and presumably Studio) 8 runs okay on it, but I'd rather not have to upgrade just yet.

No it doesn't seem to, I had to upgrade to Studio 8

  • 10.4.7, Intel iMacs & MS Word

    Good morning.
At Berkley we have just migrated to a G5 Xserve with Tiger server and upgraded all our workstations.
The workstations are running Tiger 10.4.7 and are a mix of Intel iMacs, Mac books, eMacs and iBooks.
Among the applications is MS Office 2004 for Mac with service packs up to 10.2.4, and I’ve applied 10.2.5 to one of the Intel iMacs.
When the Intel iMacs are running MS Word, it unexpectedly quits just after a job is sent to a printer. It does not matter which printer, and it only happens on the Intel iMacs. The MacBooks and the Power PC machines are not affected. The iMacs have 512MB of RAM and are fine otherwise. Disk permission repairs do not make any difference, neither has the 10.2.5 service pack.
I’d appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

I'm confused about the update service pack. Office 2004 should be 11.2. I assume that's what you meant.
Was Office 2004 Test Drive uninstalled before installing the full version of Office. It is well known that installing the full version without uninstalling the Test Version will cause problems.
I'm also wondering if 512meg is enough ram to run it smoothly and not cause problems. Office has to run unde Rosetta on intel macs which may use more system resources. I run it on a mac mini with 1gig ram and hadn't had any problems with it. Also prints fine on several printers over my LAN.

  • Successful Leopard Install after GUID partition error on Intel iMac

    Firstly the hardware:
    - Intel iMac 20" (Early 2006) with 750GB HD
    - 1 X Iomega MiniMax External HD (750GB)
    - 2 X Iomega MiniMax External HD (250GB)
    This is what I did:
    1) Moved files between external drives (8 hours) and repartitioned all 3 with GUID option.
    2) Installed Leopard on one of the external drives (1 hour) and firewire startup to check the machine runs ok on Leopard and confirm access to all other drives, apply all software updates.
    3) Back to Tiger on my internal drive and Carbon Copy Cloner to the 750GB external drive (3 hours to copy 300GB). 6 hours to zero out the external drive before the clone. Test startup between the 2 clones.
    4) Use Leopard DVD to startup and erase/partition internal drive with GUID option (very scary, but worked fine).
    5) Install Leopard on the internal drive (1 hour).
    6) Transfer files, settings etc. from the clone during the Leopard install (3 hours). Install all updates.
So far, so good. All applications worked fine including iLife, Photoshop CS3, Aperture, Office 2004 etc. I will keep the Tiger clone for a couple of weeks then delete. Let's hope the next upgrade is not so difficult.
    Hope this helps.

Libraries have computers everywhere. I would recommend getting acquainted with your nearest one. If they don't have computers, hours, times, write your local politicians demanding better computers, and hours if there aren't enough. You could have subscribed to Apple Discussions at the library, and learned as much as you needed. The info is out there. http://www.everymac.com/ is another place, so is http://www.apple-history.com/ and many sites you'll find via http://www.macsurfer.com/
Tiger isn't so much outdated, as no longer sold by Apple. Plenty of people still use Tiger, and even Panther, and believe it or not, even Mac OS 9. See this board:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=177
    and
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=99
So it is not like there aren't people using it. It just becomes harder to find some things, but never would I say impossible.

  • USB vs Firewire on intel iMac

a friend of mine is running his iTunes library on an external Firewire drive. He is using an intel iMac - not the absolute newest one, this one may be a year or so old.
question: I was thinking of getting him a bigger drive, and of course I noticed that firewire is more expensive than USB.
I know that on older computers (like my 2004 G5 PowerMac), USB is significantly slower than firewire.
Is that also the case with the intel iMacs?
Would firewire be noticeably faster than USB when running iTunes...
I just saw a hot deal on a USB 1 TB drive - $225... but if FW is really faster than USB, I will look for a FW drive for him!
    thanks!
    will

    thanks to all of you!
In my experience, one needs all the speed one can get with iTunes and a large library (500 GB and up) so it sounds to me like it's worth the extra dough for a firewire drive, even for a FW 800.
Speaking of which, I noticed that the speed tests were for USB 2.0 vs FW 400 - I can only assume FW 800 is faster still, although, perhaps, not exactly twice as fast.
    thanks again!

  • Intel iMac and Adobe CS2

    Greetings!
I recently purchased Adobe CS2 as well as Macromedia stuido 8. I was planning to upgrade to a new 20" intel iMac and I am curious about the performance of these products under rosetta. Anyone suggestions or additional info? Thanks
    -Sam

I've been using a 20" Intel 2 GHz iMac with 1 GB RAM now for just over a month and use Adobe CS2 on it and I'm incredibly disappointed with the performance of the software under Rosetta. So much so that I regret buying the Intel version and wish I'd bought a good old G5 processor model.
The main issue is speed. I upgraded from a Dual 866 mHz G4 and am encountering slower performance with CS2 on my new iMac than I did on that. Illustrator is especially excruciating to use. Another issue is that I can only run two CS2 apps at the same time never three. If I try, one of them randomly crashes. Reinstalls haven't cured it either.
I've called both Adobe and Apple in order to resolve the problem and neither have a solution. Adobe's view on it is that CS2 and earlier were not written to work on the Intel machine and so they cannot address any support problems with patches or updates. Their only solution is waiting until CS3 is released in Autumn which will be Intel compatible.
Based on this experience my advice would be to wait until CS3 is released before you buy one. Otherwise just grin and bear it if you have to have one now!

  • Intel Imac vs Dual G4 800. Upgrade Advice Needed Please.

I have a Powermac G4 dual 800 loaded with RAM and 3 huge HDs and a 15' monitor. I use the Adobe CS2 suite and Macromedia Studio 8 as well as the ilife stuff and Toast. I am in desperate need of more screen real estate. I want to buy a 20'' or 23' display but it would also cause me to spend at least 200-250 to upgrade the graphics card. So I'm lookin at 1000-1300 just for a new display. Seems like a lot $ince I can get a 20" imac for nearly the same. Ive had this g4 quicksilver for a while and its still awesome but besides the screen size a "lil" speedboost would be nice. So...
    1. If I buy a G5 Imac am I kind of throwing money away when I can "buy for the future" with a core duo?
    2. If I buy the Intel Imac 20" will my adobe and macromedia apps run better under Rosetta than a G4 Dual 800. Or Will I be stuck with practically unusable(like virtual PC slow) software. Any experiences?
    3. Should I buy the G5 Imac 20" and let the Intel Core Duo work out the kinks for another year and enjoy better adobe/macromedia performance.
I know these are common questions right now but I was curious about real world performance compared to a G4 dual 800.

Lets say you got the Core duo. I have a 17" and have used CS2 on it, and considering it is being emulated, it is still pretty fast. I have also used CS2 on my friends G4 DP 800 and let me tell you, the iMac is faster. If I were you, I would buy more ram than comes standard. The iMac G5, to me, would be an unwise decision now with the Core Duos.
The problems with the Core Duo are mostly software based from what I can tell. Hanging, Front Row, Remote issues...etc. Once the new OS X update comes out, they should have far less kinks. In the event that you want to wait for the kinks to be worked out and buy a later model, then stick with the G4 until then. It is a workhorse and will get the job done. But thats just my two cents...

  • Dreamewaver & Intel iMac?

Hi guys. This is my 1st post over here and although i do not yet have my iMac, i will be ordering it once a refund is back in my account tomorrow/wednesday.
However this is my problem. I have Dreamweaver MX on my Windows PC as i run my own website.
I am now swiching to a 17" Intel iMac with 1gb RAM and 250gb Hard Drive after a lot of thinking as i think it will be a better system for my needs (and i am fed up of windows messing up on me).
I know not all apps are universal now and this is where 'Rosetta' comes into play. Does anyone know if Dreamweaver MX works under the new Intel version of the iMac? or will i have to wait for a universal one.
Macromedia have a free trial on the website for Apple computers so i can always check that out once my new iMac has come but i am just getting a little worried as i need Photoshop and Dreamweaver more than anything.
Thanks to anyone who can advise me.

I have the 17" Intel iMac and use it with Studio MX. I primarily use Dreamweaver and Fireworks and have found that performance is acceptable on these applications. I also have a 14" iBook 1.33Ghz that I would say is equal to or slightly faster running those apps. One item to note is that both machines have only 512MB RAM, so I imagine an upgrade to 1GB+ would improve performance on each.
Either way, in my opinion, the performance is good enough to hold me over until a universal binary is released.

  • What would you do with Intel iMacs with WM97/Thus-T in Word ?

In a school in Marin County there are 20 Intel iMacs running 10.4.11 (512 MB RAM) all networked and running fine.  Several students reported a Macro warning notice when launching a Word (Mac 2004 Student edition) document (.doc).    Have looked over the current available anti-viral programs running under 10.4.11 and submitted several files to three different websites which analyze the file against 20 or more virus detectors.  Most sites and local apps found the WM97/Thus-T virus in all the offending files.   The only free application which cured the files, rather than quarantining them or deleting them, and ran with 10.4.11 was Sophos.   Sampled only one of the iMacs with a full Sophos scan of the User folder, and it found 47  "WM97/Thus-T" infected files, and cured all of them.  Repeat scan of Home folder ----> no threats found.   Some of these infected Word files go back three years, and the machines are running fine.
The students are not supposed to bring files from home, nor are they supposed to take files home.  There are a few PC towers and PC laptops on site, all with anti-viral software. The students do not currently e-mail this files nor receive e-mailed files.  For fun, I tried e-mailing one of the infected files to myself, and aol and gmail both blocked the transmission.
QUESTION:   What would you now do ?  It doesn't seem this WM97/Thus-T is a threat to Macs.  Would you feel compelled or it's mandatory to run Sophos on all the Macs on site ?
What about liability ?   If one of these infected Word files found its way on a Windows PC would the school be liable ?   What is the worst case scenario of this virus on the Mac platform ?    On the Windows platform ?

Thank you for your time and help.

No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download from:
    For Tiger:  http://www.clamxav.com/download.php#tiger
and for Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion from here:  http://www.clamxav.com/
