Macs and antivirus
Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro running the latest build of Mac OS X 10.8.4. Mountain Lion complete with all the security updates and patches.
I do not have Flash or Java 7 installed, but I do have a Java 6 runtime used for playing Minecraft.
I have an antivirus from Intego installed as I fear the flashback trojan.
Now, I have taken even more safety precautions and uninstalled Flash and Java 7 from my computer.
Since I no longer have these devil spawns on my system, do I still need the anitvirus?
It is taking up alot of CPU to continue runnning in the background and I am considering uninstalling it.
1. This comment applies to malicious software ("malware") that's installed unwittingly by the victim of a network attack. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
If you find this comment too long or too technical, read only sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user, but internally Apple calls it "XProtect." The malware recognition database is automatically checked for updates once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
For the reasons given above, App Store products, and other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. OS X security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is presumably effective against known attacks, but maybe not against unknown attacks. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
5. XProtect, Gatekeeper, and MRT reduce the risk of malware attack, but they're not absolute protection. The first and best line of defense is always your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the malware attacker. If you're smarter than he thinks you are, you'll win.
That means, in practice, that you never use software that comes from an untrustworthy source, or that does something inherently untrustworthy. How do you know what is trustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
Pirated copies or "cracks" of commercial software, no matter where they come from, are unsafe.
Software of any kind downloaded from a BitTorrent or from a Usenet binary newsgroup is unsafe.
Software that purports to help you do something that's illegal or that infringes copyright, such as saving streamed audio or video for reuse without permission, is unsafe. All YouTube "downloaders" are in this category, though not all are necessarily harmful.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. If it comes from any other source, it's unsafe.
Even signed applications, no matter what the source, should not be trusted if they do something unexpected, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Follow the above guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself from malware.
7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good, if they do any good at all. Any database of known threats is always going to be out of date. Most of the danger is from unknown threats. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav— nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
By modifying the operating system, the software itself may create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
8. ClamXav doesn't have these drawbacks. That doesn't mean it's entirely safe. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
ClamXav is not needed, and should not be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful only for detecting Windows malware. Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else.
A Windows malware attachment in email is usually easy to recognize. The file name will often be targeted at people who aren't very bright; for example:
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!!!!!!H0TBABEZ4U!!!!!!!.AVI♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.exe
ClamXav may be able to tell you which particular virus or trojan it is, but do you care? In practice, there's seldom a reason to use ClamXav unless a network administrator requires you to run an anti-virus application.
9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
10. As a Mac user you don't have to live in fear that your computer is going to be infected every time you install an application, read email, or visit a web page. But neither should you have the false idea that you will always be safe, no matter what you do. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.

I erased and reinstall Yosemite changed all passwords even on the wifi...could be wifi sniffing? I got Kaspersky hoping to use virtual keyboard for passwords and Kaspersky is comprised too..the virtual keyboard doesn't work it freezes up not allowing me to enter password. So I Uninstall and reinstall Kaspersky, so now I have problem with reinstall that doesn't work, then way later that day it is reinstalled..not over yet..that virtual keyboard now pops up randomly wanting me to use password? seems like they can copy anything real fast for i have to enter info like 2 or 3 times, never had that problem before. I'm thinking about going old school with paper docs and checks..yes technology ***...too vulnerable. .on the news they said 97% of businesses are hacked! can someone help me to counter this attack? thx

Do Macs and Apple laptops need security software, or is OS X Mavericks safe to use without antivirus?
As of now they do not require AV software.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection

If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) -
Spyware, Adaware and Antivirus necessary on Macs?
Hey i just got my Macbook today and this is my first apple computer. Do i need spyware and adaware like i did on my PC or does Apple not have to deal with those? I know there aren't many viruses for Apple, but I'm gonna get some antivirus software. Does Norton support Mac and if not what company does?
THanks in advanceLike others have said there are currently no active viruses going around for OSX. That doesn't mean that someday there won't be. If you feel that you'd like some protection just in case ClamXav is a good freeware anti-virus app that gets good reviews.

I have been using a Mac and am thinking of getting windows 7 installed on it.
My question is, will I need an antivirus software?
- I will be frequently changing from Mac OS and Windows.
- I will only be playing games from (Steam and Origin).
- Will not be using it to download anything except games for steam and origin.
- I will have things like twitter open on chrome.
(emails I do not need to open on my computer)
- Nothing else will be open
Antivirus softwares are very pricy these days, therefore, if I will need one, is there a free alternative for an antivirus software? Or is it okay if I keep switching between Mac OS and Windows 7?
Thank you.Thank you very much the very quick reply.
Will download Win7 now and check out Microsoft Security Essentials!
Again, thanks for the help. -
Help - I'm a newbie to Mac and still need my Internet Explorer browser!
macbook pro Mac OS X (10.4.8) Hi - I just purchased a macbook pro and am in the process of designing a website - after encountering problem after problem, the hosting company figured out that I'm using a Mac, and said that their program doesn't support Safari and I need to do my design through an Explorer browser. Microsoft discontinued Explorer for Mac, so what do I do? I heard of a program called Parallels Desktop - has anyone used it, will it work, or am I opening up Pandora's box by installing it on my computer? Changing hosting companies is not an option, so I need to make this work. THANKS!!!!!
macbook pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
macbook pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)You're trying to use a web-site building application that doesn't support Macs? I personally would not deal with any hosting company that won't support anything beyond Windows. Whatever you build with this company will not be accessible to other Macs. But this is your prerogative.
You're correct that Internet Explorer for Mac has been discontinued and it was discontinued at version 5.2x. To run IE for Windows on your Mac you'll need something like Apple's Boot Camp <http://www.apple.com/bootcamp/>, Parallels from <http://www.parallels.com/> or if you're feeling adventurous you can try the CrossOver beta from <http://www.codeweavers.com/>, which will let you run Windows applications without Windows.
Are you opening a Pandora's Box? I don't think so. You do need to take the same precautions you would with a regular Windows machine. That means installing antivirus software and spyware software. Be sure to test your website with both your Mac browsers as well as IE for Windows.
Hope this helps! bill

i caught a virus...is macprotector a real mac program or is it the virus masquerading as one?
i just bought the norton anti virus for mac and i'm still getting pop ups...etc
what is the best program for my macbook?MacProtector and all of it's ilk (it's appeared under several names) is a scam and is lying to you. There are no viruses on your system, only the MacProtector "scamware". If you search the forums or the web for "Mac Defender", you'll find a lot of information about this scam along with instructions on how to remove it. Do not, under any circumstances, provide the crooks who created this garbage with any personal information, particularly not any credit card.
I don't know why Norton Antivirus isn't catching this, but it may be that it will block installation of the scamware but not remove it once installed.
Regards.

I can't get artwork, I get a -609 error. I have tried turning off firewall and antivirus. Theewindows firewall is set to allow itunes anyhow. Any suggestions?
Perhaps try the "Error -609" section in the Specific Conditions and Alert Messages: (Mac OS X / Windows) section of the following document:

can any1 help me about my firewall and antivirus cause cisco network pro dont detect my comodo firewall and comodo antivirus instead it detects my windows firewall and my antivirus it says none installed im on windows 7 but i turn off already my windows firewall plus i have antivirus and its comodo antivirus .. help me pls
Using Anti-virus software on OS X basically comes down to personal preference. Many people like to have it for peace of mind or to help prevent spreading viruses on to their Windows buddies.
Personally, I've never used anti-virus software on my OS X macs, and I won't until there is a compelling reason to.
As far as a firewall... OS X has a very good firewall built in to the operating system. You can enable it with ease by clicking a few buttons.
If you really want to hide your system, then I might suggest a simple broadband router that supports NAT (most do).
That would add another good layer of protection for you. -
I have a computer Mac, and I enter in the module, so that it can unlock, but I cant not write does not accept letters, numbers or symbols, and asks me is waiting for root device, What can I do?....
Some more details will probably be required. The OS X version will help, as a start.
If you have the diagnostics DVD disk, boot that and see if there are any errors logged.
If this is OS X that's installed on a MacBook Air that you're using, then some of the usual triggers and approaches for resolving the still waiting for root device errors are discussed here. Have a look at that, and see if something in that sequence looks familiar, whether the PRAM reset or the safe boot helps or works here.
If there's any anti-malware, I/O accellerator, antivirus tools or similar installed, get rid of it. At least for testing.
There's a mention of "other OS" in your footer. If not OS X, what is the operating system in use here? If this is some other hardware or software involved, then the triggers for this error can vary. Widely. -
Dons a mac need antivirus protection
Hi, I have a mac and I got confused if I should have an antivirus program on a mac
Yes, if you run Windows on your Mac, but that's then really being run under Windows with all the Windows issues.
Maybe, if you are super cautious.
Maybe, if you pass on files from Windows users to Windows users. Then there are free versions such as Sophos or ClamXAV.
No, not in the normal course of things and you do not download software from questionable sites. There is a slightly increased awareness in the Mac community because of recent malware threats, but you also get some protection if you are running a newer Mac operating system where Apple is incorporating security elements.

I am a newbie to the mac OS.
My question is do macs require antivirus software?
I know it is needed on PC machines.
Also,if the answer is yes,,,,is there a free antivirus program for the mac?
I have been using AVG free for my PC, but it does not appear to support Mac OS.
thanks
LeoI've been using the Macs for several years and have not installed 3rd party antivirus software and have been virus free. You're pretty safe with the macs since they are Unix based and the majority of the viruses created these days are aimed primarily at windows machines.
But if you need one just to feel safe try MacUpdate.com. They have a listing of antivirus software available and there are some free ones.
Here's the link to their page: http://www.macupdate.com/utilities.php?sub=15

Yosemite broke printing and antivirus.
I should not have upgraded my new Mac Book Air to Yosemite it broke printing and antivirus, phone support no help at all. Only fix to printing was to time machine back to Mavericks, phone support never even suggested that option. A OS upgrade should not break a basic use like printing. Anyone else have this problem with the upgrade? If you Google printing problems with Yosemite I am not alone.
Since now you are running Mavericks, what exactly is your current problem? Do you wish to install Yosemite again and want to know how to fix those two issues? If so, then get rid of your anti-malware software completely and try again.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:
1. AppZapper
2. AppDelete
3. Automaton
4. Hazel
5. AppCleaner
6. CleanApp
7. iTrash
8. Amnesia
9. Uninstaller
10. Spring Cleaning

I have 2 email addresses (1 mac.and 1 blueyonder.) each with separate identities and passwords. I am forever getting asked to verify identity and/or passwords and having these refused and me then having to set up new ones. Can I combine my email addresses to a single Apple Identity and Password? If yes then How?
Any help much appreciated as this is driving me crazy!Depending on what you're asking...
There is no means to merge Apple IDs. You can change the mail address assocaited with your Apple ID, so you might switch to using and purchasing from one email address, and using the second as a backup. (There's no means to merge the purchases, and related baggage.)
While I'm guessing this was about Apple IDs, for completeness... Combining the mail messages involving multiple email addresses is separate from the Apple ID; that is usually done with some combination of notifying the senders or with the forwarding of messages from one mail server to the preferred server. Or running multiple mail accounts in parallel, depending on what you are up to.

Can I change the user timeout on an Airport Extreme?
I recently bought an 801.11n Airport Extreme and wanted to utilize its network-attached storage feature, which works great until either: a) I keep a Finder window open too long in one directory (error code -50 and -8xxx) or b) I use it to stream MP3s
