Macs forget wireless login password

I installed a Time Capsule last night for some friends. They have an iMac, 3 Macbooks, and a Canon wireless printer. They previously had an old Netgear router, so I pulled the Netgear and gave the Time Capsule the same SSID and WPA password. Everything seemed to work, their computers could back up, and even the printer worked. I was proud that I'd replaced their router without having to do anything to any of their other hardware.
Today, I got a frantic call saying that the network was down. Their DSL modem was alive, and the light on the Time Machine was green, but they had no wireless connection on 2 of their computers (the other two weren't home). They could see their network in the Airport drop-down menu, but when they tried to select it, they'd get "Connection timed out."
I suggested that they unplug the Time Capsule and let it reboot. After it came up, their Macs stil didn't connect automatically. However, if they clicked on their network, they were prompted for their network password, and they could successfully connect.
They've been using their old Netgear router for a couple of years without this problem. I don't think that the Canon printer had a problem reconnecting (at least they didn't mention it). They're still running Leopard. One of the two machines is fully patched, and the other isn't, but I did install the latest Airport update on it when I connected it to the Time Capsule yesterday.
This one has me scratching my head. I have an Airport Extreme myself, and have never had a problem with it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

so I pulled the Netgear and gave the Time Capsule the same SSID and WPA password.
This is likely confusing the computers as they already had this information stored to connect to the Netgear router. When the computers tried to connect, they were looking for the Netgear network which was no longer there.
Suggest that you change the SSID at least, to setup new connections on the Macs, not in conflict with other older settings.
You'll also need to set the new SSID as the first connection that each Mac will look for first when searching for a wireless network. Post back if you are not sure on how to do this.

  • How do I reset my forgotten Mac Book Pro login password ?

The "help" on my MacBook Pro insists I can change my forgotten login password by using my apple Id and password, by simply hitting the arrow beside the login password box. It appears after a failed attempt to enter your password at Login, however the drop down menu does not appear. The whole box shakes and that is all. In other places such as security and privacy all attempts are blocked , because I am asked to enter my (forgotten) password.
    Please advise, kind apple lovers.
    x

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

  • What do you do when you forget the login password for your computer?

I just recently brought an iMac and forgot the login? how do I recover this without losing the infor I already loaded onto the computer??

Reset the password as in this link, which works for Lion and Mountain Lion (the latest OS):

  • I forget my login password

i have forgot my password to login in to my macbook pro v10.8.3. i have try all sorts of solutions but still not working. any help?

Have you read for possible solutions over in the "More Like This" thread over here?----------------------->
If so, then your only other alternatives are to try extra extra hard to remember your password and/or take your MBP to your local Apple Store or an AASP.  After the techs do their magic, get a password that you can easily remember, write it down & keep in a safe & secure place that you won't forget.
    GOOD LUCK!

  • Resent a Login Password

    OS X Mountain Lion
I read somewhere that if someone forget the login password, it can be reset by Restart the MAC and hold Command+R (Recovery HD Partition).
From the menu, choose Utilities --> Terminal and than type resetpassword and bla bla bla
Now, I wonder, if all above is true, what is the purpose of a Login Password?

    That is true.
There are security measures that you can take to protect your computer.
    1. Do not let others use your computer.
    2. Set Firmware password.
    3. Use FileVault encryption.

  • IPad forgets wireless network

We have a wireless network setup where the SSID is not visible and we use WPA-PSK for security.  It's a very long key, but once it's entered, you have access.  If I leave the office and connect at a place like a hotel or coffee shop, when I get back to the office the previous wireless network has to be setup again.  Am I missing something in the setup to get it to retain the information?

To access the wifi in the school, each person must login with their own login and password. Each teacher and student has their own login and password.
No matter what school I go to in the region, the iPad will recognize the wireless and automatically login me in.
We are introducing 15 iPads into my classroom to be used by 5 different classes over the course of the day. When the first student get his iPad, he will log in to the wireless with his unique login and password.
At the end of the period, is there an easy way to take the iPad off the wifi network and 'forget' the login/password of the first student so that the second student can then login with their unique password?
Otherwise, there will be 75 students all surfing the 'net under my identity.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Login Password

A friend on mine cannot remember her login password on her MacBook Air. What is the best process in getting it back for her?

    Hi David Camps-Campins1,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you cannot login to a user profile on the computer. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

I bought a new IMAC all in one in February 2012....so its very new.  I have forgotten my login password when I turn on the MAC therefore it won't allow me access.  Please, someone tell me how to reset this!!! Thank you!!

    Hello,
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Change Password from the Installer menu up at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Change Password.*
Of course for 10.7 & up there is no Install Disk, so boot from your Restore Partition holding CMD+r keys, & look for it there.
