Macs in a PC workplace

Here's the background.
I am a graphic artist just hired at an organization that uses PC with Windows XP for their computer platforms. Three other graphic artists are in my workgroup as well using the same setup. All of us have numerous years experience using Macs as that is the industry standard for creative work environments. The organization is a billion dollar company with several Global Business Units. I have been given the opportunity to put together a proposal for switching to Macs for our department.
Here's the problem.
I need to gather information to show why it would be a profitable move for the company to switch to Macs for the four graphic artists while everyone else works just fine on a HP Compaq. "There're freakin' awesome" isn't a viable reason. In fact, I need to show how they are more productive, work seamlessly with a Windows PC environment, it's industry standard for the type of work we do, etc.
Here's the question.
Where do I go to gather this information? Could anyone recommend someone who deals with this sort of thing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if there is a better place to post this, I'd appreciate you letting me know.

Not at the moment. But, I do have a friend who can walk me through it. Unfortunately, he works for a competitor and isn't able to come on site and help us out.
To be honest, I think that's a step further down the road. Right now, I just need resources that can help me sell the idea to the powers that be. I need things like "using a Mac will save X amount of time over using a PC because...". Never mind that the industry standard in computer platforms for creative work groups is a Mac.

  • Reconnecting my Mac to workplace network

I have this problem too. I'm the lone Mac in a Windows workplace. Every once in awhile, they do something to the servers, and it completely knocks me off the network, but the IT department never remembers how to fix it on a Mac.
I believe it's Ethernet. It was connected before. I believe there are routers involved.
    <Re-Titled By Host>

You need to find out what they do to the servers, that may point to the problem.
What do you mean by knocks you off the network?
Is that the internet, local network connection to the servers etc.

  • My PB Is Dead. Any Way To Bring It Back ?

    *Hello all,*
I've been using Mac for almost 4 years now, and I gotta admit that I can't live without my Mac nor Mac OS X. My Powerbook G4 has got to be the best laptop ever made - it is small yet powerful. I bought mine 3 years ago when Tiger was out, and until yesterday I've never upgraded it save for migrating to Leopard early this year. FYI, I used my Powerbook to the max, doing a lot of heavy duty on its 512MB RAM like Photoshop CS3, Lightroom and etc. Over the year, I've done a lot of damages to my Powerbook, like denting its rear part, the battery losing almost 95% of its charge (thus making it unusable) and I even lost the Wi-Fi capability after I accidentally pulled out the AirPort card during an experiment.
Nevertheless, I did not have much problem with it, and of course the lags when booting up and starting apps like Photoshop are quite normal. However, my Powerbook freezed up on me 2 days ago as I was watching a movie over Quicktime. I restarted the whole thing, but I got nowhere near the login screen. Fearing the worst, I quickly moved all my data to my friend's Macbook using target disk mode. So far, I've tried reinstall Leopard, but the install screen just won't show up. I even tried to reinstall Tiger, which was successful, but then I just can't see the login screen.
    My question is,
    1. is this a confirmed case of failing HDD?
    2. Since I can't run my PB on battery anymore, I've been using direct power source, and whenever my power cable got disconnected accidentally, the PB will just go dead, and the PB's system date will always reset to 1976 after I reboot it. Yesterday when I booted into Open Firmware screen, I was horrified to see that the system date was shown to be at 1st January 1901. Is this normal?
So, to all the people here, I'd really appreciate it if somebody can tell me what went wrong and what I can do to get my beloved PB back? Right now with the economic recession and all, I can't really afford to get a new one, nor I really want to send back to the AARs here as they charge quite high just for repairing (Apple being the less popular brand here where I live). Also, there is no way I'm going back to Windows - it's just like going back to Stone Age. So. it'd really be helpful if somebody with similar experiences can tell me what I should do.
    Thanks again for reading.

    Hi everyone,
Thanks for the replies, and sorry for not signing in for the past one week as I was really busy at work.
Regarding your suggestions about cleaning up my HDD and all, I've tried 'em all and none seems to bring my PowerBook back to life. I also forgot to add one more thing - the screen was a bit fuzzy and there were purple-like thin lines across the screen whenever I start the PowerBook up.
After some consultation with a few Mac enthusiasts at my workplace, they concluded that my PowerBook's "death" was caused by the PowerBook's logic board failure. True enough, we opened up the thing and found out that the VGA component on the logic board was overheated and thus broke apart (literally!). The problem was a well-known one; according to my friends, the problem was also found in the iBook line and while the problem can be simply rectified on the iBooks by placing a piece of rubber (or whatever it is) on the VGA component, the same problem cannot be solved for PowerBook. Whatever it is, Apple was aware of the problem but did nothing to to solve the engineering/architecture defect.
Well, since I've found the solution, I guess I'll try my luck hunting for a replacement logic board online. Thanks guys, you've been really helpful.

  • Safari will not allow attachments to be sent in webmail

Recently, (since upgrading to 10.4.4, I believe - but am not positive) I have found that Safari will not allow me to send mail with attachments during any form of webmail. . .either Mail in .Mac, Yahoo, or my workplace's Microsoft Exchange mail. When I attempt to attach a file, I get the following message from Safari (as an example; this is for Yahoo):
Safari can’t open the page “http://attach.mud.mail.yahoo.com/us.f352.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Attachments?YY=54979”. The error was: “POSIX error: Invalid argument” (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:22) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.
Firefox and Camino can send attachments with no trouble. Any fixes for Safari for this problem?
    iMac 17 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

The first thing I would try is to clear Safari's cache (Safari > Empty Cache).

  • What external hard drives for backup are compatible with Yosemite?

I have an early 2013 MBP Retina 15" and have installed Yosemite. I want to purchase an external hard drive for backup via Time Machine. I have read that Western Digital drives were associated with data loss with Mavericks; I do not know if that has been corrected. Has anyone backuped successfully on an external hard drive with Yosemite installed, and if so, can you let me and others know the brand and model. Many thanks.

    Understood.
I don't receive any compensation for promoting any product from any computer, hard drive or computer peripheral manufacturer. I don't receive any compensation from any of those manufacturers or sellers for any reason. In fact I was not promoting any product, I was responding to the poster's query and was stating that I have observed the drives in use and working with the Mac OS.
My workplace is a consumer of these items and we buy and use thousands of PCs, Macs, WD and non-WD drives, and so forth. I was providing information about whether WD drives work with Macs running various operating systems. I don't promote any particular brand, we use many different ones here.

  • Can't open certain web pages or sign in to iTunes

I've just switched from PC to a Mac Mini at my workplace, at which I connect to the internet via an ethernet cable to a LAN. However, although most internet activity seems to be fine, certain webpages just won't open, regardless of what browser I use (e.g. mail.google.com/mail/) - I eventually get an error message that says the network connection timed out. Similarly, in iTunes, I can access the iTunes store, see everything that's available there, but if I try to sign in to my iTunes account I eventually get an error message saying that the network connection timed out. If I plug the ethernet cable back in to my PC, I can open any webpage that I want, sign in to iTunes etc. So, I'm thinking that there's something up with my mac's network configuration. Has anybody out there come across a problem like this before? I'd be extremely grateful for any advice.

may depend on your workplace and any blocks they may have on web sites.
    my workplace blocks itunes completely.
ex: I can access apple, but not apple downloads (blocked as shareware) or quicktime (blocked as streaming media).
I can access the local newspaper, but not the politics section (blocked blogs/chat).
Or, if the "certain web sites" require something like smart card authentication, not all browsers work well with smartcards.
(FFox requires a plugin for this)
also, if your office is windows centric, intranet sites that are accesses by netbios name instead of fqdn may fail.
    ex: http:\\ourwebserv\index.htm fails, but
    http:\\our.server.com\index.htm or http:\\123.45.240.3\index.htm both work.

  • How to stop the TM ...

... from asking if a user wants to use a disk for TM backups?
Yes, the question is just above. I am setting up the first Mac ever at my workplace and will have to create many (and I mean MANY) accounts so that everybody can have a "play" (I am hoping soon we'll all have a Mac each and use the PCs as ashtrays).
We also have an external drive each and I just KNOW that someone (no names here) will click YES and TM will format their drive and it's going to be Apple's fault.
So please, how do I stop the TM from asking that for every new drive plugged in?
Also, can you point me to info on setting up restrictions for users (access to libraries etc.)
    TIA

So please, how do I stop the TM from asking that for every new drive plugged in?
Turn off the ‘Use disk for Time Machine?’ warning
Also, can you point me to info on setting up restrictions for users (access to libraries etc.)
have a look at the parental controls.
If you are going to install a mac based system throughout your workplace in the future then you ought to budget in the cost of a high spec mac pro running leopard server.
If you had leopard server you could amongst many other things bind each mac in the work place to the open directory and really lock them down and impose sensible and strict privileges so that your staff would not be able to compromise your network or break their systems.

  • Software to open a XFDL file

I am trying to open an XFDL file, used for military forms.  Form viewer will not work. I have mounted the image in addition to many other things.  I have a CAC card reader and I still cant find a program.  Any suggestions?

I have same issue trying to work on Air Force Officer Performance Report with the XFDL ext. I tired Adobe reader 9 & Word 2011 both gave error message & couldn't open file.
Apple TextEdit was able to open - you could rescue some text if needed but to wade through the lines of code to extract large amount of text or to attempt edit would be a nightmare.
Unfortunately best option I've found thus far is to use emulator like Parallels or VMWare Fusion and run the blasted GOV MIL program shackled to Windows. Grrrr
I do have an old Mac version of IBM Workplace Forms Viewer (2006?) however it will only allow you to view NOT edit or even print or save the forms. If you only want to view that might be an option if the pgm is even available anymore? It was once a free download on a GOV grants site.

  • Sending invites to Outlook

I am not sure if this is something I am doing wrong in iCal or an Outlook limitation? I attempt to send invites or calendar events to friends who have Outlook 2003 and they are unable to open them. I know I am sending .ics files - does anyone know if Outlook 2003 can handle them? What about Outlook 2007?
    Thanks,
    Rick

From what i've been able to research the following problems exist.
Outlook apparently requires the following line to be in the header to properly accept a calendar invite from apple iCal.
    content-class: urn:content-classes:calendarmessage
And mail doesn't let you adjust headers on a mail by mail basis.
As far as receiving invites, it's hit or miss. I found a very inexpensive sharware app that solves the problem. It's called YAI run a search for YAI and Mail and you'll find it. That seems to resolve the incoming invite issue.
I find it a bit disappointing that apple is trying so hard to work it's way into business environments... network admins are finally accepting macs and better than PCs... But fundamental things such as meetings and invites aren't compatible. Of course microsoft is ignoring standards and doing it's own thing. They're arrogant butt wipes. But so what? Apple is the underdog, and has to adapt. Calandars and meeting events are CRITICAL to an office enviornment.
If people have identified the problems, how hard is it for apple to include a line of text in a mail header? How hard is it for apple to do whatever this $4 shareware program does to allow event importing? It would take an Apple programmer 5 minutes to solve a critical business incompatibility issue for macs in an office workplace.
Not making such simple changes so their users will be compatible with 90% of the market, smacks of as much arrogance as Microsoft for ignoring the standards in the first place.
So there it is. YAI for importing events. (had to search for over an hour to locate it). And that mail header (although I don't know how to implement) for sending events.
    Good Luck everyone,
    -Jason W

  • Very used to Soundtrack Pro (on Mac) at school but New to Audition On PC Trying to get Soundtrack Pro workplace

Hello Everyone This is my first post to the forums because I really need a hand
In my school we use Soundtrack Pro on our iMacs and I have become very used to it
Since I have my own windows PC I decided to pick up Audition CS6 to use for sound design at home
The only problem is I would like to find a way to set up Audition to have the layout (or workplace) of Soundtrack Pro
I have searched through countless pages to find a way to Import a workplace that looks similar to soundtrack pro's layout and have had no luck
Is there a way that someone might be able to have a download link to the soundtrack pro workplace to use in Audition CS6? I know I won't be able to get every tab but the closest works as well
If there is a download to the workplace file where would I put the properties file on PC? I noticed that you can do this on a mac as seen here (Soundtrack Pro?)
If there is anyone out there who could help I would greatly appreciate it

if I understand what you're asking for, I don't know that there's any predefined workspace layouts that closely mirror the default layout of Soundtrack Pro, but it shouldn't be too difficult to recreate.  You can drag and drop any panel in Audition, resize it, group them, or hide them altogether.  You can save a layout as a new workspace, or if you completely mess it up, revert to the default layout for your original workspace.  As you drag panels around and hover over existing panels, you'll see different purple "hot-zones" appear. These provide guidance on where the dragged panel will be placed if you release the mouse button.  Hot-zones on the left, right, top, or bottom of a panel will position the dragged panel along side at that position and both will be visible.  Dropping in the center or in the panel tab area at the top will "stack" the panels into a group so whichever tab is clicked will be the visible panel.

  • Somehow the Notes app on my personal iPhone 4 has synced with my workplace Mac Pro.  How do I change this?

Somehow the Notes app on my personal iPhone 4 has synced with my workplace Mac Pro.  How do I change this?

They do not have the same apple id's.  I want to sync notes to my personal computer through icloud - just not my work computer. I will try to delete the account for my work Mac the way you suggest.  I just can't figure out how my Mac Pro linked to my personal iPhone.  They are separate accounts, separate ids, separate emails, Mac Pro account was set up by the IT guy at work.  Thanks for your help.

  • New Mac Mini and Repairing Permissions

I've been having trouble with my Mail program and thought I would repair permissions to see if that would help. I ran disk utility from my internal hard drive and ran repair permissions. Apparently it found several permissions to repair, so I thought I would run repair permissions again and the same list appeared. Running a third time and the same list appeared again.Do these permissions ever get repaired? What do I do from here? Should I repair permissions after booting up off of my original system disk? This Mini is only a couple of weeks old and I'm already having problems with Mail and repairing permissions.

Thank you Tim but the computer is packed back waiting for TNT to take it back to Apple. I don't have time to play with permissions, the permissions are OK in the old computer.
This is what may have been your problem. The permissions on your old computer may not have matched the new computer. I think you gave up before the penny dropped.
They sell the computers very expensive and I think they would have to improve quality.
I am unsure how that can be one of your gripes as when the cube came out it was way overpriced in comparison to their other desktops. That did not stop your or I getting one then.
Your issue was a software problem not a hardware problem so no matter what kind of mac you had it would have needed troubleshooting.
The quality of the new mac mini far exceeds that of the cube. Try playing 1080P high definition media on your cube, or even 480P for that matter. Try outputting 5.1 surround sound from your cube without the addition of a firewire audio interface.
I know how frustrating it can be when something just does not seem to work. I have encountered this a few times in my work. However sometimes I just have leave it come back with fresh eyes and try other approaches and I succeed.
What you need to appreciate installing an upgrade should be planned for any eventuality. In business upgrades are scheduled to have the minimum impact on the workplace. That being said I have worked 48 hrs solid over a weekend getting systems up for a monday morning. They are not always straightforward.

  • Unable to load CSV data using APEX Data Load using Firefox/Safari on a MAC

I have APEX installed on a Windows XP machine connected to an 11g database on the same Windows XP machine.
While on the windows XP, using IE 7, I am able to successfully load a CSV spreadsheet of data using the APEX Data Load utility.
However, if I switch to my MacBook Pro running OS X leopard, then login into same APEX machine using Firefox 2 or 3 or Safari 3, then try to upload CSV data, it fails on the "Table Properties" step when it asks you for the name of the new table and then asks you to set table properties, the table properties just never appear (they do appear in IE 7 on Windows XP) and if you try to hit the NEXT button, you get error message: "1 error has occurred. At least one column must be specified to include in new table." and of course, you can't specify the any of the columns because there is nothing under SET TABLE PROPERTIES in the interface.
I also tried to load data with Firefox 2, Firefox 3 (beta), and Safari 3.1, but get same failed result on all three. If I return to the Windows XP machine and use IE 7.0, Data Load works just fine. I work in an ALL MAC environment, it was difficult to get a windows machine into my workplace, and all my end users will be using MACs. There is no current version of IE for the MAC, so I have to use Firefox or Safari.
Is there some option in Firefox or Safari that I can turn on so this Data Load feature will work on the MAC?
Thanks for your help. Any assistance appreciated.
    Tony

I managed to get this to work by saving the CSV file as Windows CSV (not DOS CSV), which allowed the CSV data to be read by Oracle running on Windows XP. I think the problem had to do with different character sets being used for CSV on MAC versus CSV on Windows. Maybe if I had created my windows XP Oracle database with Unicode as the default character set, I never would have experienced this problem.

  • How can I share iPhoto library between users on same mac. External hard drive has not worked.

I need to share and edit photos between users on one mac. I have tried sharing the file on an external drive but this has caused all sorts of problems with photos disappearing and/or not being able to be edited. I was hoping iCloud sharing or family would work but being on the same machine I need the main iCloud account active at all times. This is a workplace so the second user has minimal access permissions.

okay I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but i just imitated the same scenario on my mac and it seems to work fine. I made sure to change permissions of the shared folder AND the the actual photo library. I gave everyone access to everything (as far as the folder & library was concerned). I uploaded & viewed from both accounts. You might want to view permissions of your entire disk in disk utility to make sure there isn't an error.. Make a backup first though.
The permissions will not stick. Earlier iPhoto versions did allow this, because iPhoto did not write to an iPhoto Library if you only wanted to browse it, but with iPhoto '11 the behaviour changed. Opening an iPhoto Library from a different account will write files with changed ownership right into the library, and that will cause problems if you edit or tag photos from a second account. The document I linked to in my earlier post is Apple Support's answer to these permission problems, when using a shared folder:     iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
