Macs on a Domain with AD

Hi there
I'm a Windows specialist and new to Macs.
Got two Macs plugged into our network and want to join them to our domain so we can configure Entourage for email access.
What are the effects of having a Mac on a domain with AD and group policies ?
Will they affect the Macs and do they need to be in a separate OU ?
Kind regards
Eug

It sounds like the employee just wants a wireless access point.  I would suggest you come to a compromise:  You put in the wireless access point of your choice, and under your control.  And you let her (or make her) take her Linksys home.
I would not recommend letting employees control portions of your business computer system.  It is too easy for them to accidentally compromise the security of your entire system.

  • Is it possible to run a Windows domain with a Mac Server?

Looking for some advice on getting rid of our Windows domain controller (DHCP server, AD, etc.) in favour of a Mac Server (which we own).  Is it possible to run a Windows domain with a Mac Server?

Snow Leopard Server (10.6) and earlier included Samba which supported acting as an NT Domain Controller (this pre-dates Active Directory). Lion (10.7) and later as standard can no longer act as an NT Domain Controller nor can they act as an Active Directory server.
So the short answer is no.
Theoretically you could port Samba4 to a Mac and Samba4 can act as an Active Directory server. In reality this is not going to be easy but is theoretically possible.
An easier option might be to run a copy of Linux (e.g. Ubuntu) in a virtual machine e.g. using VirtualBox and then run Samba4 in that and configure it to act as and Active Directory server. Then you could connect the Mac side to the Samba4 Active Directory server. This approach would use all Mac hardware, and not have any extra costs of licenses to buy and as far as all the rest of the network is concerned would be a standard Active Directory server environment.

  • .mac does not work with domain name

I used Iweb 08 to host my domain name from godaddy.com.
    Godaddy account is: http://www.eyalphotography.com/
    .mac web page is: http://web.mac.com/enahmias
I published to .Mac and went through the personal domain name procedure (using .Mac account settings and godaddy CNAME) so now .Mac is my host and I don't upload anything to godaddy. Updates are made to .Mac. but even after 4 days when trying to go to http://www.eyalphotography.com/ I still get this message: “Safari can’t open the page “http://www.eyalphotography.com/” because it can’t find the server “www.eyalphotography.com”. If I go to http://web.mac.com/enahmias no problems.
I want my page updated to http://www.eyalphotography.com/ that is the whole point of doing the cname and forwarding my domain. People should just go www.eyalphotography.com and done.. not web.mac.com/eyalphotography etc.. it beats the purpose of this thing.
So any solutions why it’s not working?

Here is a step by step on how it finally worked for me.
    1. From Iweb choose domain name
    2. when logged to .mac click on domain name
    3. If you have any troubled name there just remove it.
    4. Create a new domain name and follow instructions until it says to go to your domain registrar and continue later
    5. Log to godaddy.com
    6. Under the Domains menu click on My domain names
    7. Click on your domain name that you want to change cname for .mac
    8. On the top third of the page in the middle click on Total DNS Control and MX Records
    9. On the page that opens in the cnames section click on the Reset to default setting
    10. Wait a few minutes, and then refresh the page. Then on the same section under www. click on the pencil icon to edit the cname
    11. Leave www. alone and on the next line type: web.mac.com and ok the changes.
    12. Log out of godaddy
    13. Return to the .mac domain name dialogue box and finish according to the prompts.
    14. Go back to iweb and republish ALL to .mac
    15. In my case it took only a few hours and after 2 weeks of frustration it worked as magic.
    Good luck

  • Publishing to .mac - how many domains can i have?

    ok.
    I have a .mac account.
I have a domain name outside of .mac.
I have used iWeb and have published my pages to .mac.
My domain name, let's call it myname.com, is pointed to my .mac domain.
So instead of going to web.mac.com/myname, it goes to myname.com
    Wonderful.
I have used iWeb to easily design my personal webpage.
I can use myname.com and no one has to bother with the big, long hard to remember .mac domain.
    Exactly what I wanted.
    Now:
I bought 2 more domain names.
One is for my art project.
One is for my writing project.
I want to use the same easy process detailed above:
Use iWeb to design and publish each one to their designated domain names (like one would use a dreamweaver type program)
    The Problem:
The .mac account seems to only want to publish to ONE designated domain name.
It seems that .mac only HOSTS ONE with the annual membership.
I don't want to have my personal site, my art project, and my writing project to be linked.
I want them to be THREE TOTALLY SEPARATE WEBSITES with THREE TOTALLY DIFFERENT DOMAIN NAMES. I would like to pay apple to host all three websites. Let's call them:
    1) myname.com
    2) artsite.com
    3) writingsite.com
I've read many posts on this forum and noticed that many people have had this same issue but haven't really had their question answered.
I UPGRADED my membership to a FAMILY PACK thinking this would resolve my issue - I get 4 more accounts with .mac and I can HOST AND PUBLISH up to 4 more totally separate websites by paying the additional $80/year.
I tried this and when I log out of my main mother account that holds myname.com
and i log into my sub-account that holds artsite.com,
it does not seem that I can HOST AND PUBLISH to a BRAND NEW .mac domain.
it seems the family pack does nothing but give you extra email and iDisk storage, etc.
it seems to NOT offer an additional HOSTING AND PUBLISHING feature.
    My QUESTION:
Does anyone know if it is possible to have a .mac account OR have a .mac upgraded family pack
that will allow me to host and publish to three totally different unrelated websites?
the iwebsites program only allows you to keep the iweb designs in separate folders - THIS IS NOT MY PROBLEM. I want to use iweb to design my websites (the way one would use dreamweaver, and use my .mac account to host the 3 separate websites).
    Is this possible?

You can host only ONE domain at dotMac.
As a matter of fact, iWeb is irrelevant in this matter. You can create your own pages in any HTML editor and dotMac will happily serve them. With or without a domain.
I know that iWeb is irrelevant, however I am choosing to use it to design my webpages and would like to use it to publish to several different domain names that i want to have hosted through .mac
If you bought more domains then follow the advice you quoted.
    which advice i quoted?
By +Your hosting company+ is meant the company where you purchased your domains. In your case Network Solutions.
I have forwarding too (at [DynDNS|http://www.dyndns.com>). I forward to any page I want. If a webpage is visible in a browser window you can forward to it. With or without masking.
No where on Network Solutions does it give me the option to use web forwarding or web masking in my account options. Apparently this is because I do not pay for hosting. I only have paid for the domain name.
When you have a family pack you have 5 dotMac accounts. Each can be used to host a domain. At least that's what I understand from the dotMac Help.
I refer to the dotMac forum (again) for further help.
I have posted here as well as you suggested and I have had zero posts or replies, but I do appreciate you noting to do so. Hopefully someone will know!
I would say that Apple should not mention the relation between iWeb and Personal Domain and just say that the Domain points to the /iDisk/Web/Sites folder and that there should at least be an index.html file present.
But then, I'm not marketing the stuff.
True, but I'm not confused about how iWeb relates. I'm only using it because I'm choosing to. I can get dreamweaver but don't really care to install it since iWeb can do what i need.

  • Do you NEED iWeb'08 to publish to .Mac under your domain name?

    Hi everyone,
I want to publish my site to my .Mac space under my own domain name: do I need iWeb'08 to do that?
The rest I prefer to do myself: design my site from scratch editing the html code -I believe you can't do that with iWeb, right?
I'm asking because in my case getting iLife'08 would mean a major upgrade. I'm not even sure that would run smoothly on my old machine...
    Thanks in advance...

Good News. You should be able to use your personal domain with the '06 edition, Just go to your .mac preferences click personal domains and follow the instructions. You will have to point your domain name to .mac from you registrars account page - It's pretty just follow the instructions on the personal domains link -

  • Steps to set up my domain with Apache

    Hello,
I would like to know the steps to set up my domain with Apache including the use of DNS Services. I have DNS services (http://www.dnsexit.com) . I just don't know where to begin with it adding my domain. I've already went  to my preferences>>sharing>> web sharing and turned it on. My domain host is netfirms. I have an actiontec model- m1424-wr  router  and I have a verizon fios wireless connection that's always on. I've been doing my research on this. I'm just stuck on this part. However is it true that php/mysql is pre-installed on Mac osx 10.6? I hope I can get help. Thank you in advance.

Your description is somewhat incomplete. I assume that dnsexit.com provides dynamic DNS and that you registered a domain name with NetFirms (you say "domain host", but I presume that you just registered the domain name and they aren't actually hosting it; hosting means that your web site is on their computers instead of yours). I'll also assume that you mean that you intend to run a web server on your Mac through your FiOS connection (not a great idea, and potentially a violation of FiOS' terms of service unless you bought their commercial plan).
If all of those assumptions are correct, you need to:
    1. Contact NetFirms and tell them to point your domain to DNSExit's name servers: ns1.dnsExit.com and ns2.dnsExit.com and ns3.dnsExit.com and ns4.dnsExit.com
    2. After step 1 is complete, you need to install a dynamic DNS update client on a computer in your network that will always be on (DNSExit has them and installation and set-up instructions). These programs will periodically check the IP address of your network and, if it changes, will update the record at DNSExit so that sites can find it. Note that you are using FiOS so the IP address of your router is expected to change periodically; this works around that. Your router has 2 IP addresses: the WAN is the IP address exposed to the world through your FiOS connect, and the LAN, which is an address local to your home network.
    3. Login to your ActionTEC router as the adminsitrator. You can do this through your web browser. The LAN IP address of the router is the gateway address indicated in the Network preference pane for your ethernet connection. The modem documentation tells you the default password for the router (make sure to change it).
Perform the following tasks on the router (though the advanced options, you'll want to poke around to find them):
    a. check the DHCP address ranges (usually it says that it will give out IP addresses from 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.200 or similar). Note it down. You're going to want to give the computer that acts as the web server a static IP address outside that range.
    b. Choose an address outside the DHCP range that isn't already in use and write it down. This will be the static IP addres you will set on your web server.
    c. Locate the Firewall/NAT settings on the router and add a rule to forward traffic on ports 80 and 443 to the IP address you had chosen.
    4. On the computer that will be the web server, start web-sharing.
    5. Go to the network preferences and configure the static IP address that you selected. Use the same gateways and DNS settings that were assigned by DHCP.
... and that's it. If you performed all those steps properly, requests to your domain will be sent to your FiOS modem and forwarded on to the designated computer for a response.
PHP and Apache are preinstalled on the Mac. MySQL is not. You will need to download and install MySQL yourself.

  • Best way to integrating mac os x client with Active Directory

    Hi hello
What is the best way to integrating mac os x client with Active Directory ? i have one Lion Server
For the Mac client i want Mac use Active Directory for authentification and Lion Server for manage preference.
Tell me in lion server the magic triangle is it good for what i want do ??

If you have a need now and that need will remain serviceable long enough to justifying the investment, then go with Lion Server and do the Magic Triangle.  This is nothing more than Binding OS X Server to your AD domain and kerberizing services.  Then bind your workstations to AD first, then OD.  Make sure you download Server Admin Tools for Lion.  This gives access to Workgroup Manager.  That is were you will manage your OS X Settings.
If you are managing more than 50 Macs that need a lot of continued management, then look at JAMF.

  • ISE 1.2 Authentication fails for 2nd AD domain with the forest trust relation

We are running cisco ISE 1.2, we have new AD domain with forest trust relation between both the new and the old. authentication to with the new domain fails.
Is there any requirements or configurations change needs to be done to make it success?

Use the license that is currently on your ISE.  If your account has access to download the software, then you are good.  The license will not change during the upgrade.  If you are using ISE 1.2 Patch 8 or above, then you are using the same Base/Plus?Apex Licensing model.
If you are not yet on Patch 8, the you are using Base/Advanced and these will be converted during the upgrade.

Hi, I try to conect Mac Mini from 2009 with my HD Tv Samsung F 6400 . With Mini Dvi conection and adapter to HDMI input in TV I got picture but not sound! I have analog cable from the phones out from mac but imposible to conect to TV? Can you HLP?

You really need a newer Mac Mini with a true HDMI output, because that Mac Mini's DVI output does not support Audio.
You might try a 3.5mm to RCA adapter
from the Mac Mini's headphone jack to the TV's audio input,
but that would require being able to select the Audio input in the TVs menu while using it's HDMI input.
Optionally you could also use an external 2.1 Speaker System or patch the audio from the Mac Mini to your home stereo system to enhance that older Mac Mini's audio.

Yes you can. Make sure that domains configured to use different multicast address. WLS uses multicast for communications between nodes in domain.
although your configuration will work, you could have troubles if you going to execute inter-domain calls between domains/servers with the same names.

  • From a mac to a pc with iphone

    Okay strange question here.
Is it possible to take an iphone that was used with a mac and use it with a PC? What will be lost? Is there a way to keep all the contacts, pictures, music and everything? Or ... Is there a way to export all the stuff and after setting up on a PC add my old existing stuff?
    Here is the problem.
I have a mac and my partner moved. He used my mac to activate, and sync his iphone. He now has a PC with iTunes. The concern is loosing everything when plugging into his PC. Whats the best way to do this without loosing stuff.

You'll want to make a copy of everything he's got on his iPhone. Then he'll want to install all that stuff onto his PC before he syncs the phone. Music doesn't transfer from the iPhone like it does from an iPod, unless you buy it through the mobile music store. So if he doesn't have a song on his comp that he's got in his iPhone he's gonna loose it.
I transfered from a PC to a Mac, and had to make sure that my new library was holding everything in my old library. It's not so hard if you burn a disc like you suggested. Or as I did, and use a pin drive.

  • I have a domain with 2 DCs (both virtual machines) in different Hyper-V Hosts. Dose this case make any influence on the time sync?

    As title,
I have a domain with 2 DCs (both virtual machines) in 2 different Hyper-V Hosts, and one of the perform as a PDC Emulator.
Dose this case make any influence on the time sync?
i.e. Both of the VMs sync with Hyper-V host, instead the other host should sync with the PDC Emulator?
I run w32tm command and get the following result:
    C:\Users\Administrator.DOMAIN8>w32tm /query /computer:dc8.domain8.local /source
    VM IC Time Synchronization Provider
    C:\Users\Administrator.DOMAIN8>w32tm /query /computer:hpvzh05.domain8.local /source
    VM IC Time Synchronization Provider
    HPVZH05.domain8.local works as PDC server.
How can I make DC8 sync with HPVZH05?

    Awesome!
It looks like your PDC is successfully pulling time from an external source.  DC8 is not longer pulling from Hyper-V so that is good.
When you set a client to pull from a source ( and in this case DC8 is pulling from NT5DS, which tells it to pull from the PDC), and it CAN'T pull from that source, it will default to Local CMOS Clock.  This is likely an easy fix.
    First, check connectivity:
    - Method one- Download Portqry and run this command: portqry -n HPVZH05 -p both -e 123 and see if the results say listening, or
    - Method two- Run this command from DC8: w32tm /stripchart /computer:HPVZH05
If you get any kind of error using method two, it's a connectivity issue.  (Maybe you have a firewall that's blocking access?)
The other cause of this, and probably more likely in your case, is that your PDC isn't properly advertising as a reliable time source, so DC8 isn't 'allowed' to pull from it.
Try running this command on your PDC: w32tm /config /reliable:yes
Then go restart time on your PDC, THEN DC8 again.  (net stop w32time & net start w32time)

To use 3 managed servers with Weblogic, I must a cluster environment.
Weblogic say: "WebLogic Integration domain that includes an administrative server and one or more managed servers must include a cluster. A WebLogic Integration domain that includes an administrative server and one or more managed servers without a cluster is an unsupported configuration."

  • Migrating multiple domains with same name - how? Rename? Migrate through temporary domain?

    Hi,
we have acquired another company, and they have multiple, separate domains with the same name (every site has a domain with NetBIOS name "COMPANY" and DNS name "company.local"). Now we want to migrate all these domains into ours using
    ADMT.
Unfortunately, we did not manage to migrate one of these domains completely, so the trust must remain established for some time. But we have to continue with the second domain - which normally would require a trust, but of course we can't establish a trust
to two domains with the same name at the same time.
I found two potential solutions for the dilemma, but I'm not sure if both are reasonable:
    1) Rename the domain with RENDOM.EXE to COMPANY2 and company2.local and then migrate with ADMT
    2) Migrate COMPANY to a temporary domain such as COMPANYTEMP and then migrate from COMPANYTEMP to our domain
Given that there are roughly 100 users, 2 domain controllers and 8 other servers, what would be the better approach? Is option 2 possible at all, so would I be able to use the sidHistory attribute migrated from the original COMPANY domain in our domain at
    all?
There is also an Exchange 2007 server, which seems to make option 1 impossible unless we find another way to migrate it (like, export all mailboxes to PST before migration) ...

Ok, that's what I expected. Still, I have servers in the old domain, so if I do these steps:
first create a new temporary domain i.e COMPANYTEMP and
    create trust between COMPANYTEMP -
    COMPANY(Right)
then do the migration with sidHistory from COMPANY(right) --> COMPANYTEMP ,
    disconnect the domain COMPANY(right) ,
users will lose connectivity to any servers in the domain. I understand that it does not work with all domains connected? Of course I can't make OURCOMPANY's domain controllers see the DCs of COMPANY (right) in DNS (though I could achieve it the other way
    round).
    My original plan was:
first create a new temporary domain i.e COMPANYTEMP and
    create trust between COMPANYTEMP -
    COMPANY(Right)
then do the migration with sidHistory from COMPANY(right) --> COMPANYTEMP ,
create trust between OURDOMAIN and COMPANYTEMP
then do the migration with sidHistory from
    COMPANYTEMP --> OURDOMAIN,
    Migrate users
    Migrate computers
    Migrate servers
    remove trusts and old domain
But I see that this will not work out, right? So, my only option would be:
first create a new temporary domain i.e COMPANYTEMP and
    create trust between COMPANYTEMP -
    COMPANY(Right)
then do the migration with sidHistory from COMPANY(right) --> COMPANYTEMP ,
Migrate computers and servers to COMPANYTEMP
Install new Exchange server in COMPANYTEMP
    migrate mailboxes to COMPANYTEMP
    disconnect / abandon COMPANY(right)
create trust between OURDOMAIN and COMPANYTEMP
then do the migration with sidHistory from COMPANYTEMP
    --> OURDOMAIN,
    Migrate users
    Migrate computers
    Migrate servers
    Migrate mailboxes
    remove trusts and old domain
And to minimize user impact, all this would have to be done in one go (over night), which is hardly possible .........................
