Macs + Time Machine + Server Time Machine

Hello all! I'm new to using OS X Server and have it all setup (I think) the right way. However, I wanted to ask if this is possible...
All the client machines at my business run OS X Leopard and use Time Machine to back up to a local external drive. Is it possible to have Time Machine also back up to the server using Leopard Server's Time Machine Client feature? Basically, each client would have a local backup and a server backup. Is this possible? If so, how do you set this up?

The OS X Server forums are here.

  • Mac OS X Server, Network Home Directories & Time Machine

    hi,
I am using mac os x server to manage a small workgroup using open directory and network home directories, the server is backed up using time machine. From what I understand, time machine does work on network home directories.
However, as I am backing up my server using Time Machine, it is already backing up the user directories. Is there any way of getting a client to access the server time machine backup to access the backups of the user directories?
Of course, it would be easy to restore files by logging onto the server as the user and restoring from there. I am just wondering if there is a more elegant solution available to do this from a client machine.
    any thoughts?
    thx!

    Hi,
I am trying to do the same exact thing and find that it is best to do this locally (for now). Not only is the network way slower, but it seems to make things worse. For example, things backed up via the client machine are routed from the FTP server/volume mount and different permission wise. When you try to restore them locally, it should work, but the folder had different permissions because they were initially created in root (for me). So, I hope they would come out with something better than what is available now. Thanks!

    Hello cpreasbeck,
Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities.
I was able to find the following transition guide for Xserve that provides some workload guidance to determine performance when planning a server deployment.
    Transition Guide Xserve
    http://images.apple.com/xserve/pdf/L422277A_Xserve_Guide.pdf
On page 9, Performance there is a chart that provides maximum numbers of connected users for various activities such as file sharing, mail, web, calendar, directory services and Time Machine and the CPU used as a server (Xserve, Mac Pro, Mac Mini). This information is a bit dated as the referenced software is Snow Leopard Server (OS X 10.6), and the hardware is older also, but it should give you a general idea of what you might need to look for.

  • Home Mac Mini Yosemite Server and Time Capsule

    Hello again,
I''m looking to have a Mac Mini Yosemite home server with my dot com pointed to my fixed IP.
I have a laptop, an iPad 2 and an iPhone 6 to manage in the beginning.
It's mostly to practice skills for employment purposes.
If I get the latest october 2014 Mac Mini with Server 4 and I want to back up the server on a Time Capsule 3 TB:
    Will it create big backups:
Some macs will be backed up to Mac Mini Yosemite Server Time Machine Services.
iPad and iPhone backed up in iTunes, on the server or the laptop?
What else can be a problem?
    François

    Hello DC,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
For the problem I try to anticipate, it was like those mac with Bootcamp, where Windows is one big file and a simple log on-log out on Boot Camped  Windows would change the big piece of bread and another complete multi GB would be backed up. the runaround was not to time-machine the Windows file and use a PC backup for the Windows stuff.
In the same vein, if users back up to the Mac-Mini server in a sparse image, does'nt that fill the backups of the server which is also a sparse image?
I agree with you that an external Time Machine HDD is more flexible as more than 3 TB can be needed down the road.
As for open ended question, effectively, you read it right, I am looking for problems I did not anticipate from user who bumped into them.
    Thanks

  • "Mac OS X Server 10.6 cannot be installed on this machine"

    Hello,
I got this message "Mac OS X Server 10.6 cannot be installed on this machine" when i was trying to install the Mac os x server on a Macbook Pro. The Macbook pro has 4GB memory and a intel 2.2 Ghz Intel core 2 Duo.
I understand that the min requirements was an intel processor and 2GB RAM?
So anybody know why it won't install on my macbook pro?
    TIA

It's not officially supported, but it will install. That's probably not the problem here.
FWIW, Last time I tried this with SLS, the install balked, and I didn't bother wiping the disk to install it.

  • Mac OS X Server 10.5.2 and Time Capsule - Auto-portmapping Issues

    Hi,
So I recently installed Mac OS X Server 10.5.2 onto my Mac mini media center. During the "Standard Server" Setup Assistant, it detected my Time Capsule and asked for the TC's password to setup automatic portmapping. After getting things up and running, OS X Server apparently sends a refresh of the ports every hour to the TC, which also reboots it. Needless to say, this has caused huge issues in getting the first backup from all my Macs completed.
I disabled the auto-portmapping by changing my TC's setup password. Now, OS X Server is hitting the TC with a auto-portmap request every MINUTE. This is rather annoying as it's essentially spamming my logs on both OS X Server and the TC. Anyone know how to turn this feature of OS X Server off?

I can relate to this thread.
    Setup:
I have a Macmini running OS 10.5.2 server and a TimeCapsule router connected to cable modem.
I have two other machines that backup onto TimeCapsule via TimeMachine.
    Problem:
My Macmini server backs-up with TimeMachine locally via USB drive, not to TimeCapsule... Yet I have the same problem. Which is: everytime the server runs TimeMachine, TimeCapsule router disconnects from the internet as the macmini "prepares" the directly connected USB drive. (orange light on front implies that it completely resets itself) It reconnects for the duration of the backup, then resets the router again during the "Preparing..." phase of backup.
I believe the diagnosis implied by the original tread title is incorrect due to the fact that I have seen the same problem with port mapping completely disabled on the TimeCapsule router.
Something else is going on when TimeCapsule goes through "Preparing..." that is the cause of the problem

  • HT3500 how do you transfer data from an external hard drive to a mac time capsule

I am trying to use my Mac Time Capsule as a wireless external hard drive for my MacBook Pro, so how do I transfer the data from a toshiba external hard drive, to my Mac Time Capsule?

Drag and drop or copy and paste files just as you would do with any normal Finder operation.
The Time Capsule is located under the SHARED heading in the Finder.
Click on the Time Capsule icon and double click the folder that appears representing the drive....named Data....unless you have changed the name......to mount the drive on the desktop.
Drag/drop or copy/paste files to the icon on the desktop or to the open window there.

  • Mac time freezes and not updating

After upgrading to osx yosemeti the mac time freezes frequently and not updating...I have to manually everytime to see the current time..

System Preferences/Date & Time/Date & Time - is it set to Set date and Time automatically? If so, try the following.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • Message: "Waiting for App Store to download Mac OS X Server Add on"

Trying to install 10.7 (from 10.6.8) on Mac Mini server 4,1. I don't use it as a server, and don't know anything about that.I get a message "Waiting for App Store to download Mac OS X Server Add on" check download at App store. There is none. Help?
Mac Mini Server 4.1/2.66 GHz/Intel Core 2 Duo/8 GB Memory

Ran into this myself on a new MacMini Server. I renamed the ServerVersion.plist file in /System/Library/CoreServices/. That allowed the install to start. Unfortunately it seems the installer is setup to install that at the same time. I renamed the file back before the restart and it complained on restart that the server install wasn't found.
So I thought I would try downloading it on another computer with Lion. That didn't work either. As soon as it finished download it installed and deleted the installer.
    What a pain.
If you can start from scratch, you should be able to rename the file, do the Lion install then after the Lion install rename it back. Then do the server install. I'm not sure what that will do to existing server configs though. There must be some reason Apple set up the Lion installer this way.
Oh, now I can't reboot into my existing OS. It keeps rebooting into the installer. Tried the option key and both options are named something like base os. Neither boots my existing Snow Leopard. Gonna have to get an external DVD drive and install from scratch I think. Luckily this is a new server not in production, so not a big deal. I hope people with production machines read the boards and tread carefully.

  • Mailman on Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 Problems

We have a few mailing lists on our old PowerMac G4/Dual 450 machine. We have Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 on there and we are using Mailman for list management.
Mailman is not sending anything through the lists. I repaired permissions via the Apple repair permissions function of Disk Utility and since there is a bug in that process in relation to Mailman I ran the check_perm -f command from Terminal to fix them to what Mailman wants. That usually fixes most of the problems with the Mailman system. Also restarted the qrunner and for a time that fixed it. But that isn't fixing it now.
I know the OS is old and we plan to replace it with a brand new X-Serve with Mac OS X Server 10.5.x. But for now the older server still needs to do its' job.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Yes and they show that the server received the message to the lists but I don't see anything being sent from the lists. I did a test message to one of our lists and got an error message back that said:

  • Cloning a Mac OS X Server to a remote location

Scenario: A Mac Mini running Mac OS X Server is in location A and a second Mac Mini running Mac OS X Server is to be acquired and setup at a remote location.
Desire: Do a nightly backup of Server A to the second Mac Mini so that Server B is a bootable clone of the primary server.
Question: What is the best software/approach to do this?
Discussion: I'm familiar with and use SuperDuper, Synchronize Pro and Carbon Copy Cloner for performing file by file backups and synchronization where the hard drives are on the same server ... but I'm not sure if any of these are the best alternative to backup a MAMP Pro installation on the Server (along with other applications and data) to a remote server box.
I realize that particularly within the Moodle VLE (that will be running on the servers) that absolute links will still point to the primary server but that is not an issue for me. In the event of a catastrophic failure of Server A at least there would be an offsite clone that could be accessed if a few settings were changed.
BTW: Server A is hosted by a commercial hosting service and no backup drive is available on-site for a file x file backup/synchronization. We do have full access to the server via ARD, Timbuktu Pro, AFP, etc.

Can you expand your info on the use of these two approaches, particularly the mysql replication
Well, my approach requires that there's some kind of connectivity between the two machines - preferably a VPN network to secure the traffic, but it doesn't have to be done that way.
rsync essentially takes two directories - one local and one remote - and compares the differences. Depending on the switches you use it will copy the changes from one system to the other (or both if that's what you prefer). In this case I'd set it to copy the local web directory to the remote machine, so the remote machine has a copy of all the files.
rsync works best for static files (e.g. .html, .php, etc. in the case of a web application), but shouldn't be used for dynamic files such as your database files.
As for the data, MySQL has substantial built-in replication routines that are designed to keep multiple database servers in sync. There's far more to it than I can go into here, suffice to say it can maintain a real-time copy of your data on a second, remote machine, and you should read the documentation for the specifics.

  • Is Mac OS X Server necessary in this situation?

My company is doing a trade show circuit. In our trade show booth, we will have 40 computers, which will allow people to signup for a service using a simple web form (submitted data stored in a MySQL database). Because of the exorbitant fees the shows charge for each computer connected to the internet, we want to put the signup form on a machine set up as a web server on the local network in the booth (so we don’t have to pay to connect all 40 machines to the internet).
We want the machine that hosts the signup form to be as portable as possible. An Apple laptop would be ideal. Obviously, the resource demands of a simple web form are very minimal, but I’m worried about the concurrent connections limitations.
Can I get by with the regular OS X operating system that will come with the laptop, or do I need to upgrade to the unlimited OS X Server license to make sure that 40 computers can hit the web form at the same time (this wouldn’t likely happen, but I’m preparing for the worst case scenario)?

Not necessarily Mac OS X Server. Pretty much, all you need is a gateway to the internet that uses NAT.
You could use a wireless router (secured, of course) to route the wireless clients out to 1 internet connection.
You could use a wired router, with switches enough for all your clients.
In either case, you would configure them to use Network Address Translation, configure your clients with a private IP block (i.e. 10.0.0.0/27 or 192.168.0.0) and your router with a private IP on the inside and, most likely, dhcp on the outside.
For example, you could configure your router to serve DHCP to your clients in the net range 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.100, set your router's internal address to 192.168.1.1. The outside interface information would need to be provided by the facility whose net connection you are using, but it will most likely be DHCP. This way, you pay for only 1 internet connection.
