Madness : suddenly my HD becomes FULL !

Suddenly, my HD went from a 35 % usage to 100 %.
I had a message telling me that I should bin elements
to regain space.
2 hours ago, my HD (700 go) had only 280 gb of space used,
and around 450 gb available.
In fact, when opening my HD, I saw the figures reduce in the
bar, going down from around 450 gb to 0.
What's up ?

First item is too much of geek language for me:
supposing I'd spend hours to track those files
(I have What is for instance) gow would I know
which ones to get rid of ? I'm not an IT engineer…
Second item doesn't apply : I maintain that iMac
weekly, repairing permissions, running Onyx,
deleting log files, caches, etc.,
defragmenting every 2/3 months with Drive Genius,
well, everything.
And now I'm trying a restore from TM, it began
3 hrs ago, it's still at *8.5 % and has 36hrs51* minutes to go.
What's that, Windows or Apple ?
Oh, wait, *8.6 % and 37 hrs 25 mn* last time I checked.

The only difference in that walthrough is the reference to in the Publish Settings: in Adobe Edge Animate v1, its now called 'Animate Deployment Package' instead of 'Indesign/DPS'.

Yes, there is no need to keep previous versions of software on the SSD (or on your computer).
Also, you didn't mention this but if the photos are on the SSD, you should move them off the SSD to a regular hard disk using these instructions: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

Does not say "The oldest backups are deleted when your disk becomes full."

I am helping someone set up her backup, but I noticed that in the Time Machine window, there is no line that says: "The oldest backups are deleted when your disk becomes full."
She is running Mac OS 10.5.8, on a 2.66 GHz Quad-Core. Her first backup ran fine, but we're concerned that it will not delete older backups automatically to make space.

It works differently in Leopard and Snow Leopard.
In Leopard, the box is titled +Warn when old backups are deleted,+ and Time Machine will fail with a message when it runs out of room and that box is checked.
On Snow Leopard, the title is +Notify after old backups are deleted,+ and that's what happens -- the old backups are deleted, then you get a notice.

IMac start-up disk suddenly becomes full

Hello!
I've got iMac 27 model id: iMac13,2 with 1TB disk with all latest software updates installed. All my files and folders normally count up to 300 GB, so around of 700 GB are free. But some time ago, I saw that my disk is full, 999,2 GB is used. DaisyDisk shows that I have 999,2 GB used, of which files and folder are only 250 or so GB and what is the rest is unknown.
Info in 'About this Mac' -> Storage shows that there is something marked as 'Other' that takes around 750 GB. After few hours the space frees up by itself. And this may repeat 3 or 4 times a week.
The most popular solution on the Internet for the problem when the disk comes full by itself is to switch off Time Machine, that creates local backups while external storage is unavailable. But Time Machine at this Mac is totally switched off so it can't be a reason.
Yesterday it was again 999,2 GB full, but now 700 GB is free. I have run a Hardware test and everything is OK.
What can be a problem? The only thing I suspect is disk malfunction.

To remove files from the 'Other' section you may try resetting your Mac to factory settings.
First of all, back up your system.
Restart your Mac. Once it restarts and the grey screen appears, press and hold the Command and R keys.
Select Disk Utility and click Continue.
Select your startup disk on the left and click the Erase tab.
Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format menu, enter a name, and then click Erase.
Select Reinstall OS X, click Continue, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

When adding event in iCal, the event becomes full-day by default. How to change?

Also, when de-clicking full-day the events becomes timed 10am-6pm. When changing start time, the end time follows with this 6 hr gap. Not the worst problem to deal with in this world, but...still. Any way of changing this little detail? I.e. to be able to double click the desired day, getting an event that starts with the current time and a 1 hr gap (as with the old version of iCal, that is).

I usually can reply email or compose new email in full screen mode, but suddenly it looks like this

Mac OS X statup disk has become full unexpectedly!

Lately I've been having a hard time keeping up with available memory/ statup disk space. After backing up files, I deleted a few gigs worth of files leaving more space for the system. But after stepping away, I came back hours later and suddenly was back to ZERO space available on my startup disk again.
It appears there are over 30GBs in my "private" folder alone (where all the logs are kept). I'm worried there might be some redundant or looping going on. Attached below is an example of repeated errors I pulled from the Console. I think this is what happened and may happen every time I turn the computer on. Please let me know what I need to do or if you need more information! Thanks so much ahead of time!!

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)

9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
10. MimMac (Commercial)
11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)

PS5 suddenly opens a folder full screen. why? how to fix?

This is making me crazy, and I know I saw a solution to this some months ago. When I open a folder, it opens full screen.... I hate that. I just want a smaller window, something that I can resize and move.
Why did this suddenly happen... and how can I prevent it in the future... and how do I FIX THIS?

1.—Are you talking about the archaically ancient Photoshop 5 or Photoshop CS5, also known as Photoshop 12?
2.— What exact version of either one? (With all decimals after the dot in the version number.
3.— Photoshop can in no way shape or form show folders; are you talking about the Open dialog box? If so, the latter is provided by the OS.
4.— What platform are you, Macintosh or Windows?
5.- What exact version of the OS are you running?

Suddenly no video, fans full blast?

I've had absolutely no problems with my MacPro until tonight; I heard it wake from sleep but my monitor didn't wake with it. Clicking/typing seemed to work as usual, I just couldn't see anything. I restarted, and my CPU fans started running full-blast and wouldn't stop. Still no monitor. I have an 8 month old top-notch video card (not sure of the model, since I can't use the machine). Does it sound like my video card died suddenly?

The fans are set to High by Hardware at Startup.
When the software is running properly and not crashed, it reads the temperatures from several sensors multiple times a second and sets the fans to an appropriate speed. If the software does not get around to it, the fans revert to high to avoid possible heat damage to the computer.
Fans running full blast is an indication that the software has crashed.
The caps-lock light on most Mac keyboards is under software control. No response to caps-lock = software not running properly.

You can try to change the Lync Profile name. After you do it, Lync will create a new Profile. The Lync Profile path is following:
%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync
If the issue persists, please repair Office 2013 and then test again.

External hard drive no longer found after becoming full from time machine, External hard drive no longer found after becoming full from time machine

Hi, I have been using an external hard drive as a backup for my Mac using Time Machine. I was under the impression that once the backup drive became full, it would start to delete previous versions of the backup. However, instead of doing that, it has just stopped working and I now cannot access the hard drive via a Mac or a PC. On the PC, it does at least show up in that it will allow me to disconnect it safely but I cannot do anything else with it.
I am now looking to reformat it, and start again from scratch - but can't do this as it doesn't show up anywhere. Does anyone have any advice about how I can get this working again?

Can you see the drive in Disk Utility? If so, try selecting it and using the Mount button in the top menu. You can also run repair disk and repair permissions.

Time Capsule duplicating backups and becoming full

My iMac and MacBook Air have been saving their respective backups to Time Capsule without problem for months, until last month. Then in April I started getting error messages saying it could not save a backup because Time Capsule was full.
I understand that Time Capsule normally saves multiple copies of the backups and deletes the oldest, that part is fine.
What happened here is that it actually created a second .1 backup file for each device, and then overfilled.
The finder display looks like this:

The file names it creates are as follows:

You are probably better simply erasing the TC and starting over. This kind of stuff happens when you upgrade the OS sometimes. Mavericks being the main culprit for anything bad in TM.

What are best practices for back up drives when they become full?

I've got an external hard drive that is now full. What do I do? Delete the oldest files on it, right? If so, do I delete the full backup and ALL the incremental backups since then? Do I have to do this manually now; isn't there a way to automate this?

The "usual" procedure is to move the oldest incremental backups from the hard drive to permanent storage media such as DVD.
However, if your backup drive is the same size as your main drive, then you could do incremental backups that delete files on the backup druve that have been deleted from the source drive. This prevents the drive from filling up with old and out of date files. However, if you need to maintain archives of even the incremental backups, then move the oldest to permanent storage media and delete them from the backup drive to free space.

Outlook outbox has become full of RIM redirector messages and has stopped processing outbound emails

I'm new to these forums so not sure if i'm in the right place. Problem is that my Outlook outbox has become filled with RIM redirector messages and no email messages are being processed for several days. It used to work fine before. I don't know if the redirector or Outlook is the source. I can receive emails on my handheld but not from the desktop redirector.

Hi All, (I know this was a very old post, but just thought of posting if someone found an answer by now)
I am seeing the same issue on a laptop for a user our company support. Every few hours, her Outbox gets flooded up with network messages from Redirector, and no emails would go out until Outlook is restarted. Is there a way that these messages be stopped, or reduced? This is giving the user a headache, as the Outbox woudlnt clear up and she has to restart Outlook every few hours.
