    Well, I'm trying to install GNOME but I get an error message that says "Udev: conflicts with initscripts"

    Hmm... Something's odd here.  Please run the command:
    pacman -Si udev initscripts
    To see which versions of these packages pacman is trying to pull.  It should be udev 141-5 and initscripts 2009.07-3.
    Yeah, that stuff is all right.

    I don't know how, this is a fresh install of Arch with madwifi installed.

  • How can I MANUALLY install madwifi?

    Hi all,
    I'm a bit of a situation here: I have installed Arch, but my only means of going online in via my Netgear WG311T which uses madwifi modules. It works absolutely fine on other distros so I know it can work.
    I cannot connect my pc via ethernet as I have bunnies that will chew the hell out of the cable, and I cannot physically keep my eye on the cable at all times. (So please do NOT tell me to use the ethernet right now)
    I know there is the madwifi-ng in unsupported in Arch, I downloaded the pkg file and all the dependancies, but when I installed it I got a "missing" directory" error...
    The command I used was:
    pacman -A pkgname
    I would prefer using the Arch pkg rather than downloading madwifi from their site, if possible.
    Help please!

    I've been happily using the madwifi PKGBUILD I got from the AUR.  I've been keeping it updated--works great.
    I don't believe I have madwifi-ng-utils or madwifi-ng(-archck), at least I didn't install the packages--what am I missing, anything?
    The convenience and security of using a package from the official Arch repos. If you're happy building/maintaining your own, keep doing it.
    scrawler wrote:Oh, and, maybe this belongs in its own thread, but is there a nice fancy-pants frontend I can use with the madwifi stuff under xfce4?
    Someone has a madwif-enabled, guified, wpa-supplicant package in the AUR - it might do.

  • Kernel 2.6.25 upgrade = MadWifi: unable to attach hardware [SOLVED]

    Hello,
    After I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.25 on my laptop with an Atheros AR242x, which I use normally use MadWifi with, stopped working. I am unable to get any wifi0 or ath0 device to show up in ifconfig. The most descriptive error I could pull up was "MadWifi: unable to attach hardware: 'Hardware didn't respond as expected' (HAL status 3)" out of dmesg, which you can see below. It was suggested in the IRC channel I compile MadWifi from testing out of abs which I did but it didn't seem to change anything.

    I expect you blacklisted ath5k, right? Better the devil you know and all that, but I would give ath5k a try sometime. It's in mainline, and will eventually replace madwifi altogether.
    Yes I did, I eventually will have to go to ath5k but currently madwifi works without a problem so I see no real reason to move over at the moment. In other words, I'll let someone else be the beta tester on that project

  • [SOLVED] X11 hid support broken on fresh macbook install

    Hi!
    The solution was elementary indeed, I was missing xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse. (looooooooooool)
    What bugs me though, is how this could happen to an already working system. From what I remember I didn't touch those drivers on my previuos system, I guess I installed them and forgot about them, but why would they break from a system update? Anyway, I guess that's nobody's concern by now. Thread solved.
    Old title: X11 hid support completely broken after system update. Now, I've completely reinstalled the system but the error remains. Please read the post below.
    I've a problem with X11 support for input devices since running pacman -Syu 2 days ago. This post contains error logs and a description of my attempts to counter the problem. The hardware is a MacBook, first generation. I'm a novice linux user but seasoned with GNU and a quick learner. The solution to this might be simple, but google didn't give me anything usable. All forum threads I found were either unsolved or irrelevant.
    This is what has passed. (long story short, may or may not be relevant, my current problem is explained below)
    * After the first reboot since the system update, X11 didn't give me anything except a movable cursor. The screen was completely black using the xmonad wm, and when using twm, it was completely distorted with blue patterns. I start searching for sources of the trouble.
    * ALSA and pommed complain about driver errors during boot. I can't read the messages because they skip by too quickly. I remove them from rc.conf because I prefer dealing with one problem at a time.
    * modprobe complained about framebuffer_blacklist.pacsave having an erroneous extension in /etc/modprobe.d. It actually loaded both the .conf and the .pacsave. I tried swapping between this .pacsave (is it the same or opposite of a .pacorig, btw?) and the .conf. Obviously modprobe stopped complaining when there was no erroneous extension, but I didn't notice it fixing anything else. I'm unsure whether the framebuffer is even relevant.
    * I decide that the problem didn't have anything to do with modprobe. I don't know what happened exactly during this phase, but for some strange reason, the graphics cease to be jumbled. twm starts the default programs, but is not interactive. I could move the mouse, but no mouse buttons were working. Keyboard not working at all.
    * I decide to wipe X11 and hal. I also rm -rf:ed /usr/share/hal, /etc/hal, /usr/share/X11 and /etc/X11 (yeah, I got angry).
    * Reinstalled X11 and hal. Also rm -rf:ed /usr/share/hal, /etc/X11 and /usr/share/X11 (I got really angry). Stuff works now! However, setxkbmap made everything break again, both mouse and keyboard. I read the output of startx and realise evdev hasn't been loaded, since /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev is missing. The whole folder structure /usr/share/X11/xkb is actually missing. I randomly hit the target and run pacman -S xkeyboard-configure, which creates the folder structure along with the evdev ruleset.
    * The keyboard does not work when using evdev. Temporarily renaming it so that it doesn't get loaded fixes the problem. If I'm not mistaken this makes X11 revert to not-hotplugged keyboard and mouse preferences in xorg.conf (which is auto-generated). The keyboard and mouse then works again (but, obviously, not setxkbmap, and I really need input hotplugging as a laptop user).
    * It's getting late, so I shutdown and go to bed.
    Waking up today, neither keyboard nor mouse is working - also when not using evdev! I've really no idea where to go from here. I've some output for you to analyze:

    Any help would be greatly appreciated! This is too much for me to handle by myself. I'm thinking of trying debian if I can't sort this out, so be a patriot!

    Alright, I got fed up and decided to reinstall the system.
    Only installed wireless_tools, madwifi, hal, xorg and xf86-video-intel.
    Edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf to select the intel video driver.
    The mouse and keyboard are still frozen.
    Here are some much cleaner Xorg.0.log, xorg.conf and startx_output.log files, I hope it will be easier for any readers of this post to find errors here:
    Output of startx:
    hostname: Host name lookup failure
    xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.4956

  • Madwifi-ng preup/predown script question [solved]

    Hi,
    I recently installed Arch 0.7.1 on my laptop.
    So far I am very impressed with the speed and the simplicity :-)
    I just have one small problem: madwifi-ng
    Currently, I have to manually create the ath0 interface with wlanconfig, which is annoying. On the Gentoo forum I have found a partial script with preup/predown functions (the thread is located here)
    preup() {
    if [ "${IFACE}" == "ath0" ]; then
    /sbin/wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta > /dev/null
    return $?
    fi
    if mii-tool ${IFACE} 2> /dev/null | grep -q 'no link'; then
    ewarn "No link on ${IFACE}, aborting configuration"
    return 1
    fi
    return 0
    predown() {
    if [ "${IFACE}" == "ath0" ]; then
    killall wpa_supplicant
    /sbin/wlanconfig ath0 destroy
    return $?
    fi
    return 0
    I am using a Netgear WG511T pcmcia card.
    I would really appreciate any suggestions on where to put this code, and how to modify it for use with Arch Linux, or if I should use something else alltogether.
    Thanks in advance!

    Another interesting problem: I recently upgraded to the latest madwifi-ng code with svn update and also started using wpa_supplicant 0.5.0 (upgraded from 0.4.7)
    The netcfg script stopped working and after a little tinkering I discovered that  the following section from start_profile() in the netcfg script was killing wpa_supplicant before it could connect:
    while ! wpa_cli status | grep "wpa_state=COMPLETED" >/dev/null 2>&1; do
    if [ $i -gt 10 ]; then
    wpa_cli terminate >/dev/null 2>&1
    ifconfig $WIFI_INTERFACE down
    stat_fail && return
    fi
    sleep 2
    let i++
    done
    fi
    I have now commented out the loop and running the command "netcfg netgear" no longer halts there and so far everything seems to be fine again. I am guessing more than a 20 second timeout is needed, so I'll try having the iterator increment to 30 or something and see if that solves it.
    [EDIT]
    Now using  [ $i -gt 30 ]; and it works. On second thought, since everything  now really just works and my main question was essentially answered, I am adding [solved] to the title.
    Thanks again!

  • [User error - please replace user] [SOLVED] madwifi trouble

    Man... how many of these are there!?
    A few days ago, i installed Arch.  Hooked up to ethernet, i enabled Unstable and installed madwifi-ng (and deps, of course).  I modprobe ath_pci, and ath0 appeared in ifconfig and iwconfig.
    I configured everything as normal with iwconfig, disconnected eth0, and tried to fetch a dhcp address.  For then, everything worked great.
    The next day, i reboot (unplugged from eth0), and the wireless is being weird.  I can configure it, obtain an IP, ping the router, but i can't get online.  I hooked back up to eth0, and with a bit of fiddling, could get the wireless working in the regular manner.
    Assuming it was a madwifi problem, i went to AUR and got the stable branch of madwifi, as i'd never used NG before, and it might be different.  I downloaded the package (btw, i think the package isn't put together correctly. It required alot of fiddling), makepkg, and installed the result with pacman -A.
    I rebooted, and i couldn't get an dhcp IP.  I looked back over my bash history, and noticed that i had forgotten to get rid of madwifi-ng before installing stable.  I uninstalled NG, but not the dependencies, and rebooted again.  Same problem.
    Advice would be appreciated

    i uninstalled both, resinstalled ng (from unstable), rebooted, and did the following:
    ifconfig eth0 down
    ifconfig ath0 up
    iwconfig ath0 essid RoadRunner
    iwconfig ath0 key fffffffdff
    dhcpcd ath0
    everything is working fine... i think it got messed up with having both.

  • Madwifi and custom kernels

    Hello,
    I've got a boring "problem", perhaps it's normal ..
    Every time I change my kernel (version or patch), I've got trouble with my madwifi modules because they're compiled with an other compiler's version.
    So every time I have to try to find a new version (if I used a kernel from aur or normal repositories) or I have to try to recompile it if I got a new kernel from sources ... And if I forget ... i'll have trouble as soon as I rebooted my computer because of course I won't have any way of accessing Internet.
    My question is : Is there a way to automatize the process of recompiling and installing that module every time I change my kernel ? Otherwise I'll have to try to modify my aur kernel file to do it .. but it's not very safe ... And under Debian it's possible to do such thing ..
    Thanks a lot

    Rebuild madwifi.  It is impossible to make a module that matches all kernels.  In fact, the kernel EXPLICITLY denies that.  If you are custom patching your kernel, you need to rebuild all kernel modules.  That's just the way it works.  All the kernels in the official repos have (or should have) corresponding versions of madwifi for download (i.e. madwifi-beyond).

  • Kernel26tp_plus on X61- madwifi problems

    I had been running the stock kernel with no real problems, wireless or otherwise, on a new lenovo thinkpad x61.
    Then, recently tried kernel26tp_plus package from the AUR to try to get suspend to work.  Everything seems to work except that I've now lost my wireless (the ath_hal & ath_pci modules aren't found).  Actually haven't tried suspending yet -soon as I booted the new kenel realized that I had no wireless.
    Tried installing the madwifi-aircrack package for think pads but it fails to build.
    Haven't really had time to try much else, and since I'm pretty inexperienced with running anything other than the stock kernel, I thought I'd see if anybody could give me any general pointers.  If this short description isn't enough, I can post whatever further info would be helpful.
    Thanks...

    Thank you both for your replies.   I'll try using using pm-utils and the stock kernel.  I tried to go the tuxonice route pretty much arbitrarily.
    If anybody comes across this post and maybe had a similar experience or other ideas, I'd like to hear it.
    For the record, I did try
    - the madwifi-aircrack-tp_plus package
    - modifying the PKGBUILD and recompiling
    neither of which worked for me - but at this point can't remember exactly what went wrong or where....
    Thanks again.

    Well I'm stuck is there a way out of this cause I can't even use the (Don't Panic) CD now without running into more update problems.

    Greetings. While trying to upgrade I got the following error
    $sudo pacman -Syuf

    pl help.
    Note: with lspci | grep Wireless I noted that my  wireless is intel PRO 2200 chip set. and in the modules ipw2200 was there for loading. I could not figure out why ipw3945 hinters the upgrade problem. I removed ipw3945  with sudo pacman --remove ipw3945 and removed the ignorepkg in rc.conf. made a try with pacman -Syu for a system upgrade operation.
    After a completion of about 360 MB of updates down load it failed to update the system. It is late night. I decided to give a try with yaourt. This time with yaourt -Syf sytem got updated.

  • Madwifi driver setup for WPA-PSK wireless encryption

    Hi Group,
    I thought I was so close to having a complete setup, but then a problem.
    Here's the background:
    Using archlinux with stock kernel 2.6.22 on IBM T21 or T23 Thinkpad.
    Using an pcmcia SMC SMCWCBT-G network adapter.
    I am using the latest 0.9.4 madwifi source tar.gz
    The proper atheros madwifi drivers are installed and the ath0 device is active and functional.
    Reading along in the madwifi docs, I found that I also had to install "Linux WPA Supplicant" in order to connect to a WPA secured router or access point.
    I made the .config file as suggested in the Supplicant README and I set the defconfig file to work accept madwifi.
    But when I try  ~$/opt/wpa_supplicant-0.5.10/make   I get the following errors and cannot figure what to do ---

    Why the freebsd errors??
    Any help or guidance greatly appreciated

    Thanks for the reply, Iphitus.
    I removed the source madwifi and wpa_supplicant installation and used pacman after the major update.
    I setup the wireless to use netcfg2 command, but the connection still fails --
    err, ath0: timed out
                        - DHCP IP lease attempt failed                                           [FAIL]
    I'm wondering if maybe I've overlooked something basic -- my access point is setup to use wpa2.  does wpa_supplicant not work with wpa2?
    I'll do some googling and see if I can find anything.
    I appreciate your time and help.

  • Macbook Pro 3, Atheros Wifi dead starting with madwifi 0.9.3.2-2

    Before Oct. 10th my wlan worked perfectly out of the box. My pacman.conf shows:
    [2007-10-10 21:52] madwifi-utils (0.9.3.1.99-1 -> 0.9.3.2-1) aktualisiert
    [2007-10-10 21:52] madwifi (0.9.3.1.99-2 -> 0.9.3.2-2) aktualisiert
    Since then there is no more device and I couldn find any way of makin it work again.
    Actual version is 0.9.3.3-1 but still no wlan.
    Broken by update is somewhat frustrating. Any ideas!

    I downloaded, compiled and installed the latest snapshot of madwifi (revsion r2847). After restart wlan works again.
    Problem solved.

  • Macbookpro installed like a charm.. many thanks!

    install of x86_64 dont_panic was peachy on this macbook core duo, and has been for the last two weeks. I've had some problems with other distros about half a year ago, but as I understand the arch kernel runs the mactel patches, whereas it turns out recent developments in drivers really make configuration for the macbook a doddle.
    wifi now works with the madwifi drivers, I can mount my os x home directory as my arch home directory using the hfsplus kernel module (which now has write support), I have a swap file rather than partition to get around the apple partitioning system, 3D graphics is running using the fglrx drivers, and the weird function keys also work using pommed (sort of).
    Some things are still on my todo, like getting suspend working, but I've read good things so I'm not too worried.
    I'm really very impressed, a big kudos to the arch devs, thank you very much (where can I send the beer?)

    No he has ATI graphics which hould be 2nd generation

  • Madwifi-ck conflicts madwifi [SOLVED]

    Hi
    a few minutes ago I updated to the new ck kernel (kernel26ck-2.6.21.ck2-1) but it seems that its madwifi module (madwifi-ck 0.9.3-1) conflicts with the madwifi module for the plain arch kernel (madwifi 0.9.3-4). Can't I install them both? I'll file a bug if someone can confirm that it is one.
    EDIT: the bug was resolved in a recent update.

    I have the same problem
    edit: I haven't installed the new ck-kernel, but it tells me
