Magenta cast and wavy lines

Hello forum, having just purchased a new eMac and finding everthing as great as my last one apart from my screen! It seems to me that there is a large area at the centre of the screen with a magenta cast. When calibrated with my Spyder Eye One it gives an even more pronounced cast. When I change resolution (from 1280 x 960 to 1152 x 864) I get a series of wavy lines at the edge of the display. This is not screen I knew and loved on my previous eMac. Is this a common prroblem with this model 1.42 GHz? Do I need to seek Apple support and send the computer back? or is it a setting that can be corrected? Any help or advice Thanks, Tony

Thanks for that Donny, just been talking to Apple and told it is a Known Issue. Been offered a repair or refund. Not really sure about repair, my feeling is the mac is less than a week old and already needs a fix. Has any one else any experience if the repair is a god idea? Think maybe I should move up to iMac. I know that Apple can not replace the eMac as it is discontiuned item. This one was a clearance item New, Unused and unwrapped but with damaged box. Thanks again, Tony

  • Dark prints using CS5 & Epson R2400 ongoing problem, now new PC and magenta cast

Have tried every combination of set up in trying to solve problem. Had One Eye (now defunct lamp) various experts etc etc but compensated for dark prints by having screen lightened to bizarre point. Now having a new PC am faced with massive magenta cast. I really don't want to buy a new printer but have had the dark print problem since I got it. Have spoken to Adobe and Epson at length but eventually washed their hands. I feel it is something to do within the computer set up or Photoshop - don't think its printer problem. All drivers updated regularly. Thought it could be monitor problem but don't really think this is the case.
Any ideas welcome as I think I have tried everything. Use Windows 7.
Am retired and not very technically minded!  Serious amateur photographer.

I have an Epson 1280 printer, and I have the same problem with prints. Part of the problem are the different color profiles in the monitor and the printer. The other problem to deal with is the type of photo paper used. While looking at web sites, I found that the ICC Color Profiles for the printer are on the install disc and are not automatically installed. One of the links describes which folder to install the profiles on both Mac & Windows computers.
As station_two wrote, calibrate your monitor first.
Below is a link about calibrating.

I do not have an exact answer for you because I have not figured it out myself, but here is what I have been doing on my prints. I might recommend that you work on a copy of the original.
In the Layer floating window, create a New Adjustment Layer by clicking on the half black/half white circle, and choose Hue/Saturation or Color Balance or Selective Color. Because the prints come out too red, you want to increase the green sliders, which is the opposite of red, and/or decrease the red. (Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Color Balance) is another way to do it.
Under the menu item Image>Adjust Levels. Move the center triangle at the bottom to lighten the mid-range, or use the center dialog box and change it to 1.20 or 1.30, for example.
Now press Print with Preview (but you really are not going to print).
When the dialog box comes up, make sure the Print Space: dropdown is set to Epson Paper or whatever you are using.
I have been using Relative Colorimetric. Press Print. Another dialog box will come up. At the bottom will be a button for Preview, which will generate a preview of what the photo will look like if printed.
Keep going back to the original and double click on the Adjustment Layer and adjusting it until the Print Preview looks ok.
Be sure when you actually print that the paper and color settings in the Epson dialog box match your settings in Photoshop. There is a dropdown that has Print Settings or Color. Often they don't match unless you print several photos in a row. I have found printing at the lower settings (less than 360 dpi) also messes up the color.
It is not an excellent solution, but until I can figure out more, I am in the same boat as you.
I'd suggest saving the lightening and color adjustments as two different Actions.

Try resetting your phone by holding down the home and off button until the apple symbol comes up. Then if still doing, restore your phone in itunes from your backup.

  • When I cut and paste a word form a pdf file into the search window I get wavy lines, why is this

I am editing a document and wish to look up words and other information. When I select and copy a word from my pdf document and paste it into firefox's search window, I do not get the word but wavy lines instead. How can I remedy this? Example: I am trying to look up Carl Jung and copied this name but when I try pasting it I get this wavy line: ␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣

You’re omitting essential information here, namely how exactly do you paste into the message you’re composing in Mail when it crashes. Do you paste by ctrl-clicking (or right-clicking) and choosing Paste from the contextual menu maybe? Try doing Edit > Paste (⌘V) instead; I bet Mail won’t crash if you do that.
And I wouldn’t be surprised if you also have a plug-in or an input manager or a contextual menu item or something like that that has a bearing on this. In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/Contextual Menu Items/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/Contextual\ Menu\ Items/ /Library/InputManagers /Library/Mail/Bundles ~/Library/Contextual\ Menu\ Items/ ~/Library/InputManagers ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Lightroom 3, Epson R2400 and the dreaded magenta cast

A customer called me to say her printer was broken and nothing she could do would make her Epson R2400 print accurately from Lightroom on her iMac running Snow Leopard. I visited expecting to have to sort out a double profiling issue or a clogged printer.
However, this was not the case. A nozzle check revealed very mild clogging on the light cyan cartridge but nothing too bad and it cleared quickly. Checking the print settings in Lightroom and the Epson driver settings suggested that there wasn't a problem there either - colour managed by a profile in Lightroom with printer colour management turned off. A couple of test prints resulted in images with a definite over-all magenta cast. Plodding through threads on this forum and others came up with all the usual profile issues which I reckoned were not applicable in this case. Still, I downloaded and reinstalled the Epson driver and also the icc profiles for the papers being used, in this instance those supplied by Permajet, in case there was some corruption. The problem persisted.
Now there are a lot of speculative solutions out on the web, some of them involving tweaks to the OS, others recommending monitor profiling (not the problem here) and some suggeting the use of elaborate presets to distort the colours to a printable result. None of these seemed useful - the screen colour was fine and the histograms weren't unbalanced in a magenta direction. It should just work.
Then I wondered about the little 16 Bit checkbox. What if I ticked that? Result - PERFECT. Lovely colour immediately. Now, I'm not sure why printing in 16 Bit should sort out the magenta cast in this case but it does. There is a general opinion, even in books such as that by Martin Evening, that 16 Bit is an interesting option but not vital. In the case outlined here it is vital.
So, if you are having magenta cast problems try ticking the 16 Bit box. It may just save your last clumps of hair from being torn out.

I wouldn't argue with you re the R2400 and its capabilities as it isn't mine and I didn't have any of its literature while trying to get to the bottom of the problem. The profiles I tried were Epson's own and a Permajet one from their website. Both produced magenta results until 16 Bit was turned on, or at least that seemed the trigger for the better results. Unexpected, I agree.

  • I create a project w/iMovie and I have two problems:  When I try to finalize the project iMovie crashes; when I share to DVD sometimes it crashes also; if I can successfully send it to DVD and then burn a DVD there are wavy lines on the screen.  Help!

I create a project w/iMovie and I have two problems:  When I try to finalize the project iMovie crashes; when I share to DVD sometimes it crashes also; if I can successfully send it to DVD and then burn a DVD there are wavy lines on the screen.  I'm uising photos in my project, not video.  Help!

You can split a project in two by doing this.
    1) Go to the Project Library View.
    2) Select your project, and click FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT. Give it a name like "your project name - part 1".
    3) Do this again. This time name it "your project name - part 2"
    4) Open Part 1 for editing. Delete everything in the second half.
    5) Open Part 1 for editing. Delete everything in the first half of the project.
At the end you should have your original project, plus the same project in two parts.

  • Stong Magenta Cast on Nikon D1x Compressed Raw files

I had to get some shots that I took in 2003 with my D1x. I'm on a MAC with Lightroom 1.3. I imported the photo's into Lightroom. I noticed something strange.
Some of the the images first displayed correctly in the grid view. bus as lightroom created the higher res thumbnails, the images developed a very strong magenta cast. Reminded me of slide film when the color developer was going bad. But some of the other images were fine, I had about 2000 from the shoot.
It took a while, but I did discover the differences between the files that displayed correctly and those that didn't. The difference was that the ones displayed incorrectly were Compressed RAW. I was beginning to run short of storage on the shoot and changed to the compressed option for about the last 200 or so shots.
If I ask Lightroom to open them in Photoshop CS3, they open as PSD with the same strong cast. Not good at all.
I then used Bridge to look at the files, they also show up with the sme strong magenta cast in bridge. But, when I open them in Camera Raw, they display fine and when I send them to Photoshop, they open correctly.
So I can use the files, but I'm wondering. Has anyone else noticed this? Is Adobe aware of this?
I looked for an article in the Knowledge Base and looked through the forum messages. I didn;t find anything except for an item in the forum about D100 files displaying the same as mine.

i just started having the same problem except that my magenta cast happens when i open an image through raw then ps and save from ps to a file. If i save from bridge or adobe raw there is no problem. I only get the cast when saved from ps and to jpeg and if viewed through bridge. have no idea what to do.

  • Jagged wavy lines edge of CRT display with Dual Core Mac mini

My friend recently bought a Dual Core Intel Mac mini and when hooking it up to a 19 inch MAG monitor there are often wavy lines on the edges of the screen. They go up and down both sides, are jagged, and also are not static but moving quickly. Sometimes it seems to behave normally while other times if it doesn't show up on the boot screen it will show up after a little bit of use.
At first it seems that the more stuff I opened the worse it got, so I thought it could be the shared video RAM as he did not upgrade from the original 512 , but that should only slow the computer down anyway. Now I think rather than the RAM I think it could be related to the Apple DVI to VGA adapter, resloution/refresh rate, or just bad video hardware. I can't rule out that it just won't play nice with the majority of CRT monitors out there either. Sometimes changing the resolution/refresh rate helps and other time it doesn't. From what I heard my friend experienced wavy lines somewhat on his own monitor but I don't think it did it when using a DVI to HDMI cable to his Sony 50 LCD (and I didn't see it when hooking it up to mine either).
If anyone has any idea what could be going on I would greatly appreciate it. The reason it is so important is that my friend decided that the Mac mini was kind of an impulse buy and didn't need his iBook and another computer for his TV so he is going to sell it to my brother who is in need of a computer. So I don't want him to get into something that will give him problems right away.
    Thanks in advance,
    Robert

So is the MAG monitor your brother's monitor? That wasn't clear.
What you are seeing will most likely be limited to the MAG monitor. The MAG is experiencing some kind of noise coupling in to horizontal sync, likely from it's own power supply. You are correct that this will be related to the sync rate. Changing the vertical refresh to something higher, like 85 Hz or higher if available, might help to mask the noise. Also, power supply loading will affect how the noise manifests, so you weren't imagining when you thought that opening more applications made it worse. It didn't have anything to do with the mini but rather the different average picture level on the screen was changing the monitor's power supply loading and hence changing the beat frequency between hsync and the power supply's switching frequency.
I think it is safe to say most of what you see is bound to the monitor and not the mini. Furthermore, if you are stuck with this monitor, you can probably lessen the appearance of the noise by mucking with the refresh rate out of the mini.

  • I'm getting wavy lines on my stills within my timeline

Hi all, it's me again. I have a new issue. I recently did a project using .jpg images and put them to music. I also used LiveType as name keys to highlight what the different sections were. When I exported the project I used the animation codec, none on field dominance and left it at the 720x480. I needed this quick so I used iDVD. When you play the video on a NTSC monitor you see wavy lines along the edges of the photos (the ones that have black as the border) as well as fine lines either from a brick wall or windows. (I know there is a bit of a zebra effect when there are lines already in the image) So I don't know if I just need to start over and import the images as pict or tiff files or if it's a simple fix by using a different codec and appropriate settings.
    Any thoughts, I'm open.
    Mike

If it's the black border on your pix that waves then you can try a couple of things. You could use a gaussian blur filter, but I would make it really slight like .02-.05.
You might also try putting a soft edge on the border you created for the jpgs

  • Ken Burns:  wavy line issue during zoom

As a photographer I work exclusively with stills. Regardless of resoultion/format, images with a full-range K.Burns zoom have undulating, wavy lines. This is especially noticeable in compositions with parallel lines, and further intensified by zoom durations over 5 seconds.
This is true even when optimized by iDVD set at "High Quality."
    Appreciate any insights/soultions...

The render bar on top of the timeline is dark-green for good-looking images, which according to the final cut manual, means 'no render necessary'
This is misleading. It simply means rendering is not necessary for playback. It does NOT mean that the material does not need to be rendered.
100% zoom level is as close to how your video actually looks that a computer monitor can display.
You never said what format you're working in.
You always have to render still images. You're making video, and they're not video.

  • Wavy lines in bar charts after converting a Powerpoint to a pdf?

After converting a Powerpoint file to a pdf, the bar charts have wavy lines.  The one thing I noticed is that the problem appeared when creating the pdf with Notes showing.  If Notes are turned off, then the bars are fine.
Is there a solution for this?

    Version is Office 2007.
    OS is Windows 7.
Viewer - I think it is Acrobat 9 Pro.
When printing, the option to print notes is chosen.  If the option is just slides, the bars in the charts are normal.
To create a PDF, the Powerpoint file is open --> then go to Print --> in the Print dialog box, change the printer name to Adobe PDF and print.

  • Magenta cast when printing from any app in Mountain Lion

I get a serious magenta cast when printing from any application using my Epson R3000 inkjet. I am aware of the double profile issue. For example in Photoshop I let it do the color management. ML automatically turns off printer color management. My monitor is calibrated with Xrite Color Munki. I did not have this issue before upgrading to ML 8.2. Is there a driver issue?

In System Preferences->Monitors->color is the correct
    color profile set?
Do you you have the correct profile for the printer
    selected in Photoshop?
Also, are you using Proof Setup in Views?
Need to ask since sometimes a person can stare at
something too long and think it is correct (done it myself often).
It may not be a driver but an issue with color profiles.
It is possible one or more of the color profiles may be corrupted.
Go to Utilities->ColorSync Utility select and run Profile First Aid.
See if problems found in profiles.
Using PS CS6 myself and have not seen any such issues with
    color and 10.8.2.

  • In InDesign CS5, creating a table with wavy line

I've created a table. I want the vertical column to have a wavy line but I can't get the colors to work. See attached. What am I doing wrong?

You're out of luck.  If both boxes were the same colour you could have a wavy stroke between them, but not like that.  Try making a standard box with a wavy stroke and filling it, you have the same problem.  I think Illustrator can do it, but that doesn't help you with your tables!
You can of course chnge the "fill" colour, that won't help you either.

  • Sneak Peek #3 about the future of Photoshop: dashed and dotted lines

Zorana Gee shared another Photoshop Sneak Peek, this time about dashed and dotted lines:
Could it be useful in your workflow?

I think dotted and dashed lines with gradients sounds useful. I won't have to go to Illustrator and back to get those functions.
    BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY
I would like to see some other upgrades to the pen tool and vector masks:
    • All too often I can't really see the pen tool line when I am making a vector selection – it gets lost in the clutter. Could there be an option to assign a color to the path? Hot green or magenta?
    • I would like to be able to change the size that vector points display. If I could make the points appear slightly larger it would often make editing easier.
    • I would like to be able to select two points very close to one another and JOIN them like in AI. I don't understand why the pen tool doesn't share more of the functions of the pen tool in Illustrator such as CUT. It sometimes seems like the vector tools in Photoshop and Illustrator were developed completetly independent of one another.
Attached (I hope) are images demonstrating how hard it can be to see paths. Can you see the paths? In the first image the path is there, not selected. In the second the path is selected. This makes my work very irritating sometimes.
