Magic Computar Machine wont start. (Stalls at Grey Screen)

A friend of mine is having trouble with a "beloved" 12-inch G4.
On startup computer makes chime noise, displays apple logo and grey screen and then forgets what its doing. There is no loading spinner, or further action. It just sits there.
We've tried reseting PRAM, booting in Safe Mode and booting as a FireWire drive. None of these seemed to work.
Additionally, the PowerBook's internal DVD-ROM drive does not work. We are trying to obtain a boot disk to see if it will work through an external FireWire DVD drive, but after reading all the warnings about disconnecting peripherals, we're not sure if this is even an option.
Aside from relegating this device from "laptop" to "doorstop" are there any other suggestions?

This is an option. You just need to be sure to disconnect it after it powers off. You'll know when it has powered off.

  • My macbook pro wont get past the grey screen at startup. Help!!

After doing a run of the mill software update on my macbook pro (running snow leopard) it froze during the "moving items into place" stage. I forced a shut down and now it wont get past the grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel. I have tried booting from the original DVD but it still freezes. When I boot it in verbose mode it seems to stop at "jnl: unknown-dev: update_fs_block: error reading fs block # 3597880! (ret 5)", the Apple AHCD Disk Queue manager :: set power state is timing out and there is a disk I/O error. I have tried to reset the power manager (not sure if it worked or not) and I have also tried clearing the PRAM (again, not sure of that worked). When I try to look at the hard drive using target mode on my imac the hard drive doesn't come up but the DVD does. I'm concerned that my hard drive is fried. Any suggestions?

It would help to state in your post which remedies you tried that didn't work.
Start here >  OS X Lion: If you see a gray screen at startup
If nothing there helped, try Starting up in Safe Mode
Safe Mode deletes some system caches that may help.
A Safe Mode boot takes longer than a normal boot so be patient. Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple menu.
If a Safe Mode boot didn't work, since your Mac has OS X v10.7 installed, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access OS X Recovery built in utilities. The startup disk may need repairing.
Tip:  Hold down the Eject key while starting up your Mac to eject a disc.

    orshikhfromsc,
boot from the Mac OS X Install DVD that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro (by holding down the C key as it starts up). When the desktop appears, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and erase your internal disk. After it’s been erased, reformat it. After it’s been reformatted, exit Disk Utility and reïnstall the version of Mac OS X from that DVD onto your internal disk. After that version of Mac OS X has been reïnstalled, boot from your internal disk and run Software Update to get it up-to-date within that version; that should allow you to redownload and reïnstall Mavericks, if  desired. If Mavericks is reïnstalled, run Software Update again to get it up to date.
If you no longer have the two grey installation DVDs, you can purchase a replacement set from either Apple or iFixit.

Do you know what version it was you installed?
I would start with a clean uninstall of that Desktop Manager software (that is what you installed?). See this link for instructions:
    http://www.blackberryforums.com/rim-software/25937-how-perform-clean-uninstall-reinstall-blackberry-...
Then, I would recommend downloading and installing Desktop Manager verions 4.6 from here:
    https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22
Persoanlly, I would recommend the version you find there withOUT the Media Manager software.

  • Shuts down after start tone and grey screen with pin wheel...!???

Hi all, first time here so please bear with me,
even though i have had my imac for so long now, i have only in the last three to four months started playing around with it, i really am a newcomer to macs, and pc's come to that! so far i have only connected up to the internet and put a couple of home video's onto dvd, and play music.
i have been reading a lot of the other posts and frankly i'm lost!
it is about 20 months old and was bought in the uk, i live in cyprus and for that reason i did not purchase an apple plan.
we do not have an apple store here although there is an apple dealer, however they are not soley apple and over here service leaves a lot to be desired! so i am reluctant to take it to them as they are likely to just keep replacing parts and eventually present me with a huge bill!!
    anyhow this is the problem:
several times the screen went dim and froze, with a message saying to "push the power button to switch off and and then switch on again", it seems this happened each time when i opened azureus? after this happened a few times it would no longer open the desk top, it would load normally,ie. grey screen with pin wheel followed by blue progress bar and then just a blank blue screen, the blue tooth mouse however was still connected as the cursor would move. it has now changed again! start up tone and grey apple screen with pin wheel for about 30secs or so, then the fan seems to go into turbo mode for a few secs before switching off....i feel sick!! i was really getting to like my mac.
i did recently install tiger, but there were no problems at all with that and it is running on a friends apple with no problems at all, more recently i added more memory which coincided with when i started using torrentspy and azureus,
i did read in another forum something about possible memory probs, so i followed the tip to remove the memory and the back up battery and leave the computer unplugged for 24hrs, i replaced the battery but not the memory, i'm still getting exactly the same shut down result.....
can anyone shed some light on this pleeease? i'm feeling rather desperate right now.....thanks.
    imac G5 20inch Mac OS X (10.4) airport card fitted, 1.25gig mem.

    Hi ino,
My suspicion is that you have serious hard drive directory corruption caused by the crashes when using azureus.
First step is to see whether you can boot up from your Mac OS X DVD . Put it in the drive while its on, and start up the computer again while holding down the "c" key. The computer should now start up from the DVD.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar (which menu it is in depends on which version of OSX you are using).
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is able to complete the repair now click on the "Repair permissions" button.
Once this process has been completed try restarting the computer.
If it still doesn't work, you may have to try an "archive and install", while booted from the OSX DVD.
Be very wary with software like "azureus".
    Cheers
    Rod

  • My macbook pro will only start-up in grey screen

hi, i have a potentially big problem
I have just purchased macbook pro 15 inch 2.0 GHZ and tried to transfer data using the migration assistant.
i started have numerous problems like i did not have permissions to open folders - i found out how to solve that from this forum and it worked
i had more problems though with Teamviewer - it would not open - came up with an error message 600, so i downloaded the newest version which also wouldn't open.
and basically it just got from bad to worse.....
so i thought that i would then try to do a restore from 'My Passport for Mac' external hard drive.
then i got numerous messages popping up saying 'system extensions cannot be used' etc
i tried numerous times to restart new laptop, shutdown or even hard re-boot and it would not
so i went into SYSTEM / LIBRARY / EXTENSION and started deleting the files that it said were not installed properly
the list went on and on and on so i deleted the whole contents of extension folder - it was only then that the laptop would restart
BUT - now that it has restarted i get the restart 'sound' a grey screen with the apple icon in the middle - no cursor and some small writing in the top left hand corner (looks like CMD mode) and amongst the jargon it does say 'unable to find driver for this platform'
what on earth have i done ?
    please help
    thanks
    Serena

i found the answer to my question on this forum - see below,  hallelujah.....
This solved my question by Franco16 on Jun 13, 2012 3:13 AM
I found the solution, thanks to MrE_the_Great (read following cut and paste)
I'm glad it worked out.  I'll put the steps below again for others who join this discussion late and to clarify as I was typing on a phone last night while my MBP was re-installing.
    1) Hold in command-r while rebooting (or from cold start) to boot to the recovery partition.
    2) Chose re-install mac osx
    3) Enter appleID credentials
    4) After the re-install is complete (may take a while depending on your intenet connection etc) all your files, preferences, and software will be there, you shouldn't lose anything.
    5) DO NOT reattempt the Thunderbolt update.  You can update the iPhoto and other updates that Software Update finds...just DO NOT check the Thunderbolt one or you will be at step one again.

  • Mac won't start...grey screen with timeout on 0xfd

My iMac is pretty new, a couple of months old...
I just started it up when I got home and I get a grey screen with something saying "Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus 0xfrd, timing out! (Addr: 3 EP: 2)". I have no idea what any of this means, at the top theres some sort of 0xfrd code. Also "Process 1 of exec of sbin/launched failed errno 8.." I don't get it as i'm no computer expert...can someone please help? I have no idea whats going on...if it helps I have got an audio interface plugged in via usb, and a usb synth, but thats it, and it's been fine...until now - but I have noticed it slowing down slightly over the last few days....
I need my mac for tomorrow...
    Thanks again,
    Harry

I tried this but it didn't work. I think it is my keyboard because even when I turn the computer on the green led on the caps lock button doesn't light up. I even tried a regular USB keyboard and I had the same result.
I guess I will have to find my leopard CD.
Is it possible to just restore system settings from the leopard cd so that I don't lose all my data?

  • Attn: macbook pro won't start up past grey screen NO MATTER WHAT

my macbook pro won't start up past the grey screen, NO MATTER WHAT I DO. i've searched all the discussions on this, and NOTHING WORKS. nothing caused this either - i was just browing the internet and using ichat, and my computer shut down, and that is when this started.
I am EXTREMELY disappointed with this bullstein. My computer works great, etc., and I support mac and apple to the nth degree, but then some stupid crap like this happens and I can't use my computer at all. I have to use my sister's **** ibook g3 to even do this.
PLEASE HELP. do NOT post what you have already posted in the other discussions, and i've already been welcomed to the boards. I can't go to an apple store because i'm on vacation in new mexico for the summer, and there no stores anywhere near here. is there any real advice around here? I need to use my computer. That is why I spent close to $4,000 for it with upgrades and software.

where can i get an install disc for the macbook pro?
You really need to use the one that came with your MBP. If you don't have it, a retail Tiger OS X disc should work.
also, could an archive/install potentially free up some harddrive space on my computer?
No, it will actually use more space, so you will need at least 6G of free space. To clean your hard drive, use WhatSize.

  • Mac mini won't start up.  Grey screen with apple just freezes.

Mac mini won't start up. just get a grey screen with the apple and it freezes.  Please help.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • MacBook pro won't start up past grey screen

Ive tried a PRAM reset four or five times- nothing. Won't boot into safe moDe. Tried the command line with fsck-fy and it says there is no problems with my had drive but still won't load up.
it shows the grey screen with a clear spinning cog, then a blue screen, then the grey screen again, then blue, then grey before it goes to blue and stays there. I can move the cursor
any help would be appreciated. I can't get a Genius Bar appointment for a week :/

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
