Magic Extraction in PSE 12

What is the alternative for "magic extraction" in PSE 12? Please advise.

I suggest you use Select> Save Selection at intervals so that if you do mess up you can get back to an earlier stage in the process.
I had a go with a downloaded image of a white deer and if you husbands photos are similar, with not a lot of contrast between the deer and its background the approach that worked for me was:
Use the Quick Selection tool in Add mode to get most of the deer, don't worry too much about selecting too much.
Use the Quick Selection too in subtract mode to deselect large areas not wanted.
Zoom in and use the Selection brush to fine tune the selection, using add/subtract as necessary. I suggest you turn on the Mask mode while doing this.
Click the following image (a work-in-progress, not intended to represent a finished selection) to see it more clearly.  The right-hand version is what it looks like with the Quick Selection tool active, the left with the Selection Brush.
[EDIT] And if you've not come across them before the Open Square Bracket / Close Square Bracket are the shortcut keys for rapidly increasing / decreasing the size of the tool - great in the Selection Brush when you want a tiny selection brush to fine tune individual or very small groups of pixels.

  • I would like to clean up edges for an extracted object

I am using PE 4.0, XP Pro, Dell, 1 gig of RAM and after using magic extraction tool or the magic selection tool I do not know how to take my image and make the edges very smooth and then how to add a shadow effect or a border effect to them.
    Thank you,

    Richard,
There are several ways to clean up the edges of a selection.
You can select a the Blur Tool and set a small brush and run around the edges of the cutout image. You can also try making the layer active, Cntrl+Click to select the edges and Selection Feather.
There is a defringe tool in Elements 4, but I still have Elements 3 so I can not say how well it works.
Also, Butch Davis has posted a tutorial that works well in defringing selections. I've posted a link below:

  • Using Lightroom in Conjunction with Elements

I currently use Elements 10 (and love it) and am considering purchasing Lightroom 5.  However it seems like the lines between some of the Adobe products is getting blurred.  Photoshop Elements seems to be getting more of the capabilities of Photoshop CS.  And from what I've read and looked at on Lightroom, it doesn't seem like it really can do anything that Elements cannot do, other than do some functions easier, one example being straightening.
First question: If I have both Elements and Lightroom, can someone give me one or more practical (and not overly complex) examples of using both together on a single photo?  Please don't include functions that are available in both pieces of software, unless it gives superior results that can be obtained by one but not the other.
Second question: I don't use raw (yet), so if editing a jpg with both Elements and Lightroom, doesn't it have to be saved in one before editing in the other?  Or is there some type of interface that is available between the two pieces of software where you can edit first in one and then in the other without saving in between?  Obviously I am asking because I am aware of the loss of info due to compression when doing multiple saves and opens on a jpg.  Yes, saving at level 12 might minimize it but there would still be loss of info*.
    * Now that I finished the question, I think I know the answer.  If editing first with Elements, save it as a psd rather than a jpg, then open the psd in Lightroom (is psd a common extension in both?), make the additional mods, and save it as a jpg.  This way there is only one save of the jpg.  Does that work?
    Thanks.

However it seems like the lines between some of the Adobe products is getting blurred.
Seems like? No, the capabilities of these two programs definitely overlap.
And from what I've read and looked at on Lightroom, it doesn't seem like it really can do anything that Elements cannot do, other than do some functions easier, one example being straightening.
Things like layers and magic extraction tool and a whole bunch of other PSE editor tools are not available in Lightroom.

In my opinion, the only sensible workflow is as follows: import into Lightroom, organize in Lightroom, edit in Lightroom (do as much editing in Lightroom as possible) and then transfer the photo to PSE for additional editing that cannot be performed into Lightroom; return edited photo from PSE to Lightroom. I point out that many people find that the editing in Lightroom is powerful enough so that only a small percent of their photos need the additional editing of PSE.
Second question: I don't use raw (yet), so if editing a jpg with both Elements and Lightroom, doesn't it have to be saved in one before editing in the other?
None of the capabilities of Lightroom are limited to RAW photos. After you edit a photo In LR and want to send it to PSE, the built in LR function called "Edit In..." will make the copy for Elements to use, launch PSE (if it is not already opened) and allow you to do your edits. Then you save the edited photo (not Save As...) and Lightroom will recognize the changes made in PSE.
Obviously I am asking because I am aware of the loss of info due to compression when doing multiple saves and opens on a jpg. Yes, saving at level 12 might minimize it but there would still be loss of info*.
In the process I described, there are two such saves (one by LR and one by PSE). You could eliminate the quality loss (at the expense of much larger files) by telling LR to create a TIF instead of a JPG for editing in PSE.

Hello, i have a problem with the adobe photoshop elements 10 in the organizer impossible to use the magic mouse, Where can I configure this one?

What do you mean by "impossible to use"? I use a magic mouse with PSE all the time. What are you wanting to do that isn't working?

  • Can you insert an image into an image you are editing?

I am editing a picture & would like to add in our logo on the picture, is this a possibility?
Your commets would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
After you have inserted the image, you can use
Magic Erasor tool : Click on the white background area you want to remove. ( if the areas you want to keep does not have White at all, uncheck Contiguous from the options bar and click on the white( or any color) background area.
Paint Bucket tool: from the options bar, select from Mode Drop down, - "Clear". Check/Uncheck Contiguous depending on the colors, and click on the color to be removed.
Magic Extracter: Go to Image > Magic Extractor: Mark areas to protect and remove with not so refined and perfect strokes, and Click on Preview to verify that you have acheived the desired results. You can erase and mark your areas you want to protect and remove till you have the right areas removed.  Once you are satisfied by the results, click on OK
PS: Make sure you have the correct Layer selected from the Layer's panel.
Also, please mark the answers as correct answers if they solve your problems.
    Cheers,

  • Tourms

I have upgraded to Windows 7 which required wiping the computer clean and reinstalling all programs. When I tried to reinstall Photoshop Elements 12 from "My Orders" a box popped up that said:  The file archive part of Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 is missing. You need all parts in the same folder in order to extract Adobe PSE 12. Please download all parts.  What does this mean and how do I do it? I'd appreciate any help.

    Hi tourms ,
    Welcome to Adobe Forums.
Download both exe and the 7z file. Run the exe file to initiate the installer.
You need no program to extract anything.  Those are self-extracting files.
    Please reply for any assistance.

  • Help getting a vocal track to sync with Logic PRO

I am trying to do a remix to a song which I have the acapella vocal track to. Can someone please let me know how to get the BPM of the vocal track then get the sequence in Logic Pro to sync up with the vocal so I can remix. Please help.

Unless it is a totally robotic performance, you can't magically extract the tempo value of a vocal performance.
If you want to be a remixer, your first skill to develop is to find the right tempo, by estimation (for the ballpark) and experimentation (for the exact value). Use an empty Arrangement (or soloed vocals) with but a click going on.
Once you get close, you may find that you have to shift the vocals back or forth a bit as it's highly unlikely that it begins at an exact downbeat.

  • HP Photosmart Essential.msi is missing

Same thing happened on my Photosmart C5540 All-in-One.  I was really glad to get that thing unstalled and working properly. What could have caused it?

I figured out how to get around this!  You need to follow exactly.Download WINRAR (you can find this at RARLABS.COMInstall WINRAROnce installed, download Photosmart Essentials from here: http://www.hp.com/united-states/consumer/digital_photography/free/software/index_ww_eng.htmlOk, so here is the slightly tricky part.  Once the file is downloaded, you need to right click the file, pse_350_enu, and then select "extract to pse..." (whatever it showes)Lastly, if you are having the same problem as we were, then go to the window that says "cannot find file", click browse, and point it to where you extracted the contents of the pse_350_enu file. That's it!  It will eat it up, and the vicous cycle is over.Enjoy!

  • PSE 13 Organiser and apple magic mouse - unusable

Just bought PSE 13 and to my dissapointment discover that scrolling within the organiser is so erratic that its near impossible to select two photos and then stack them.
In addition the slightest touch seems to send the media window shooting off in random directions.
I see from other comments this problem seems to have been around for several versions of PSE. I had v10 before and didn't notice this but had to upgrade for the 5k iMac.
Come on adobe... sort it out.

Thanks don_mayer, I really thought about upgrading my PSE10 to PS12 to fix the scrolling issue.
Your post saved me some money.
@adobe: it would be nice to know, if this problem is planned to be fixed in a future release of PSE. It is NOT linked to the specific "Magic Mouse" from Apple. On OSX Mavericks, scrolling is nearly unusable in the photo browser in PSE no matter which type of mouse is connected to the Mac.
After reading through all the posts in this forum, I haven't solved this problem yet. Also a Logitech mouse (as recommend in one of the posts) did not fix this.
PSE is the only application, I know of on Mac, that seems to have this problem.

  • PSE 12 install halts at extraction, won't complete

I downloaded PSE 12, have tried for a number of hours to install over the last week.  It halts during extraction of the larger file, at about 3%.  Then I get an error saying I don't have the available free space or permissions to continue.  I have ~200GB free and I am an administrator on the local machine.  Also, i can't even get that far unless I put both files in my local user (root) folder.  If I put them in the DL folder, temp folder or the desktop, together, it won't find the second file.  I've spent some time with Adobe chat help in which we:
    Renamed OODB file
    Deleted contents of %temp%
Tried installing Adobe Application Manager (same error, even though I've already installed it in the past)
Tried making a temporary Administrator account and installing via that.
All of these give the same error.
I'm at my wit's end.  Any ideas?

use a different browser, or if you follow all 7 steps, you can download a trial via one of the links on this page using a browser that accepts cookies: http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elements-12-direct-download-links-premiere.html
and activate with your serial number.
if you have a download problem (eg, you see an error page or you are offered an incorrect version), you probably didn't follow all 7 steps.  typically, failure to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 is the problem, but your browser must also allow cookies so that (a restrictive browser setting) is another potential source of problems.

  • With PSE 12, is there a magic trick for repeating editing steps that were done on one photo to another?

With PSE 12, is there a magic trick for repeating editing steps that were done on one photo to another?

    No magic, sorry...
If you are able to achieve your goal by using adjustment layers, you can save the first picture in psd or tiff format to keep the layers. If you have a new file needing the same adjustments, have both pictures open and copy the adjustments layers to the new file.
But the best solution, by far, is to edit in the ACR module. You can use it not only for raw files, but also with jpegs, psd or tiffs. Edit the first picture, then when editing the following one, choose 'previous version' from the menu icon on the right of the 'basic' tab.

  • Magic Wand problem in PSE 8 - unexplained gaps in selection

    Hello,
it seems that recently when I select an area of a shot using Magic Wand (MW) and create a Layer with the selection, there are unaccountable partially missing "see through" bits where I can see some of the check fill pattern through the selected area.
I have been using PSE 8 for a few months and I have never noticed this before but perhaps I was not looking hard enough. MW also seems to be using tolerance settings a bit differently but that is not easy to demonstrate - it just seems that with a given tolerance it takes a lot more Shift-clicks to eliminate spots inside the desired area and still some remain, though feathering seems to clear them away. I often select an area by building it up with a lot of Shift-clicks and usually decreasing tolerance values as I go, also using Alt-clicks to remove unwanted inclusion. Until now once all the "ants" were eliminated from inside the desired area I could then feather it and with Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V achieve a layer with no discernible holes. (I usually feather with Refine Edge rather than the Feather option because that way there is no fade off where the edge of the shot is selected.)
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing these gaps?
    Thank you,
    Nick Sergeant

    Thanks, Terri_F and hatstead,
following your suggestions I have just experimented with all six combinations of Eyedropper (ED) and Magic Wand (MW)
ED = Point Sample, MW with/without contiguous checked
ED = 3 by 3 Average, MW with/without contiguous checked
ED = 5 by 5 Average, MW with/without contiguous checked
These setting do make a difference but the MW select is always leaving out at least a few stray pixels. But the problem is not a show-stopper as I may have a work-around (below)
I think ED= 5 by 5 with MW contiguous was the most reliable for picking up almost all of a clearly isolated area of colour. Even that setting leaves some stray pixels out for some reason but nothing serious. All other settings seem to leave holes in the area selected despite no sign of them during the selecting.
I ran some settings more than once and despite this systematic approach it seems I can never get quite the same result twice. I'd expect the edge of the selected area to fluctuate a bit each time, but I also still get little few-pixels-sized holes well inside the area seIected, which spread out of course if I feather.
I think what I am seeing looks worse than it really is because tiny groups of a few pixels each left out of the select will expand when feathered and be quite an eye-sore. So from now on in these cases, if necessary I may work-around by Select > Modify > Expand for one or two pixels in order to capture stray pixels, and then feather. I tried it once and it seemed to capture all the stray pixels without compromising the select outline too much.
    Thanks for your help,
    Nick

  • Adobe PSE 5.0 Control X , Magic Wand, Lasso Trouble

I have Windows XP. When editting a photo, I suddenly can no longer undo a task using only "Ctrl X" on a photo in the Editor workspace. It shows it is undoing the task in the photo bin photo and in "Undo History". Now, the only way for me to undo a task is to press "Ctrl X" and then "Enter", or use the mouse to click on the "Undo History" taskpane. How do I get back to having to use only "Ctrl X" to undo? Also, the Magic Wand and lassos do not have 'marching ants'. They seem to be 'frozen' when I use them. Would someone help me with this, please?

Thanks, Barbara! It works again! Also, it 'reloaded' my missing "Artworks and Effects", which would have been my next question. Your instructions were clear and the key word which shed light on the subject was "it"...referring to the editor. I had been quitting and starting up the whole Adobe PSE 5.0 program, using those keys during start-up, only to find a list of catalogs.
    Thanks for your quick response!
