If your program is Photoshop Elements 13, then you have posted in the wrong forum. Somehow your thread got posted in the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum (video editing).
Please re-post your thread in the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum or wait for a moderator here to see your thread here and move it from here to there.

It is my belief that the Magic Extractor Tool is not in either Photoshop Elements 12 or 13. You could check that out in the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum.

  • PSE7 - Magic Extractor.  Operator error or not working?

I'm a newbie here, but I've been working with PSE for a number of years.  I have  very old version (E3) but recently upgraded to PSE7.  I'm still trying to learn how to use the added functionality.
One of the most important things for me to learn is how to extract an image from it''s background.  I've watched countless tutorials, and see that the steps are quite simple:
    1.  Open Image
    2.  Click on Magic Extractor
    3.  Select either by clicking or click/drag on what you want to extract and do the same for what you want to leave behind
    4.  Select "Preview" and you can refine your selections from there.
The problem is step 4.  Nothing everything goes great until I ask it to preview, then nothing at all happens.  I've tried resetting the tool and doing it again.  I've tried just selecting "OK" after I select the extraction area.  Nothing happens at all.
What am I doing wrong?  And if I am doing nothing wrong, how can I get this to work for me?  I recently purchased a green screen and have plans to take  photos and use digital backgrounds.
I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer here.  Thanks!

I'm trying to avoid the whole layering world at this point.  When I open the image, it automatically states t hat it's a background layer.  The image is really easy to differentiate from the background (extract child from black background).
I  believe I'm extracting properly (using the foreground/background brushes) but even if I was using this improperly, it would give me the background at least, right?  I am getting  nothing.  I get the hourglass for a second or two then it goes away and nothing has happened.  The lines or dots marking my selection still remain on the image.
I have never used this feature before, so it has never worked for me  I bought PSE7 a few months ago for the sole purpose of extracting images from their backgrounds.  I hope I can get it to work!

  • I just bought Photoshop Elements 13 and cannot find the Magic Extractor.  Where is it?

I watched a video online and thought this would be a really cool tool to have since I'm preparing images for Amazon and they require a white background on the main product photo.  I thought buying Version 13 would be smarter than 12 or less as it would be more up-to-date, but I cannot find it!  So frustrated and overwhelmed at this point.

Yes, the magic extractor has been removed from PSE12 and not reintroduced in PSE13.

  • Magic extractor gone in Photo Shop Elements 12

Why is Magic extractor gone in Elements 12? Can I get ik back? What is the alternative?

Yes, it's gone. Adobe suggests that refine edge can be used as a substitute.

What replaces the magic extractor in PS Elements 12?

This is adobe's suggestion, from this page:

The Magic Extractor ToolAlternative: Use the Quick select tool together with the Refine Edge tool to quickly select and extract anything from your photos.

The magic extractor disappeared after PSE11. It's recommended that you use the quick selection tool together with refine edge, if necessary.
From the refine edge dialog you can output your cut-out to a new layer or layer mask.

  • PSE8 Magic Extractor omits chunks of "include" selection

Having for years successfully used the extractor tool in Photoshop 5.5 (running under WinXp and Vista), I'm finding the performance of PSE's "Magic Extractor" tool (currently running in trial mode under Win7 Professional) extremely disappointing.  WIth almost every photo I've tried, the "Magic Extractor" leaves large, jagged chunks of transparency and/or overlays the image with dark blue semi-transparent circles within the "include" selection when previewed.  It is possible to "complete" the selected are using the "add to image" tool inside "Magic Extractor," the necessity to do so seems a big step backward, performance-wise, from PS5.5.  "Fix holes" has little or no effect.
Do others experience a similar problem using PSE8's "Magic Extractor"?  Is there a "fix" to improve the tool's performance other than manually correcting the selection with the "add to image" brush?
    Thanks for any helpful suggestions.

  • Can't find foreground brush for magic extractor

I just purchased PSE 4 for the mac and am trying to use the magic extractor. I have done a rough selections with the magic wand. When I go to Image>Magic Extractor I get a window telling me to first place some dots with the foreground brush tool, which I can't find. The instruction window shows a panel on the left with hand icon and magnifying glass, and + and - brush tools above those. How do I get the + and - brush tools to appear? Thanks for any help.
    Owen

The top brush (+) is the foreground brush. It should be active when the window opens. Click it in the toolbox if it isn't.
If you mean you don't see the toolbox, are you running with a screen resolution of at least 1024 x768, millions of colors? are you using an administrative account?

  • Elements 12 Magic Extractor

Where the ... is the Magic Extractor tool in Elements 12..?

    There is an alternative: http://clippingmagic.com
I tried it out this morning and I think it works pretty good. I might like it better than Adobe's Magic Extractor I think the way it shows the outline of what it is clipping is a much better approach for the preview.
Now that I have this alternative I don't really need pse for basic editing and would still be interested in alternates to pse for the mac? What other sotware is out there that I might have been missing all these years I've been using pse? I'm ready to abandon adobe.

  • How can I stop the magic extractor from locking up

This is an issue I've recently started to have. Everytime I use the magic extractor function ir freezes/locks up the program. I do get the status of the extraction process after picking my background & forground, yet when I attempt to preview my photo it acts as if the process is working, but in the end I don't get a preview image of my selection & the program has locked up. I'm running XP with SP3, 3.49 GB of available RAM and 20.8 GB of free space on my drive. The image I am working with is 2592x3888. So I don't believe memory is at issue here.Is there something I'm missing?

The editor saved prefs often get corrupted. You may need to rebuild the editor preferences to resolve any conflicts. To begin, close Elements.
Hold down the Ctrl+Shift+Alt keys and simultaneously click on the Edit button on the welcome screen. Release the three keys and look behind the welcome screen by closing it. Or hold down the keys whilst clicking on the desktop icon for the Editor or PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe in the Programs folder. Keep holding down all three keys until you get the settings option.
You should see a pop up box with the words: Delete Adobe Photoshop Elements Settings File?
    Click on Yes
Then wait whilst Elements rebuilds the preferences.

  • How to access Magic Extractor after purchasing Version 13 of Photoshop Elements

After paying $99 plus tax to purchase Photoshop Elements V13 I have learned that Magic Extractor was eliminated from this and V12 'upgrades.'  There are workarounds in V13, but they won't work so well I have read.  I need to apply a white background for Amazon images to photos of wire jewelry.  I need intelligent software to help me.  See my items at http;//www.ElegantEarCuffs.com to see how difficult a manual process this is.
Is there a way for me to download a version with Magic Extractor and if so, would you recommend which version, ie V11 possibly?
Since I have already paid for 13 would I have to pay for 11?
    Thank you.

Glad all seems to have worked out for you.
I was about to go into...
Photoshop Elements 13 and Premiere Elements 13 are standalone products that come with the Elements Organizer 13.
When they are on the same computer, they share the same Elements Organizer 13 catalog.
So your suggestion that you got different Elements Organizer 13 results depending on whether you started on the Photoshop
Elements 13 versus Premiere Elements 13 side of things was challenging.

I downloaded the instruction manual when I installed PSE13. It says that Magic Content is under Image>Magic Content and that this brings up a dialogue box. However, I don't have Magic Content listed under images in either Quick or Expert mode. Does anyone know what I have to do to make it appear, please? Is it magic?

Do you mean the Magic Extractor? That was removed beginning with PSE 12:
