Magic Formula for connecting to camera?

I've digitized hours and hours of footage in FCE and have trouble every time. It always turns out to be something small, like I forgot to plug the firewire cable in before I started FCE or the camera is in record mode rather than playback.
But this time nothing seems to work. I'm wearing the right clothes, holding my mouth just right, and still can't connect to the camera. Here's the process:
- connect the firewire cable to the camera
- put the camera in playback mode
- launch FCE
- play the tape a second and stop (this has helped in the past)
- select File -> Capture
What am I doing wrong? I've tried every variation on every step and FCE refuses to recognize the connection. Could it be that I just have a bad firewire cable?

Using a 6-month-old Macbook with the latest OS, fully updated (10.5.5). Canon XH-A1, connected to the Mac via firewire. Digitizing to the local drive (it's only a few seconds of footage). Recorded in HD. Project is configured to the correct specs for the footage (AIC 1440x1080i60). FCE 4.0.1. I have Quicktime player 7.5.5 though I'm not sure how that relates to connecting to the camera (I'd love to know how - every little bit of knowledge helps).
In short, the same setup as the other 6 or 7 projects I've successfully worked on already. This is one of those situations where I'm not doing anything different but suddenly it doesn't work.

  • How do i get video from my sony hx100 digital camera to my mac? after connecting the camera via the supplied usb cable, iMovie shows icons for 5 videos, but none will load.

i've connected the camera to the mac using the supplied usb cable. imovie shows 5 icons for videos but all of them have the red circle with slash through them and the box to import them is grayed out.

Get a nice Sony miniDV camcorder. It is not too expensive; it is small and easy to carry around to shoot your video. Most importantly, it will be instantly compatible with iMovie. You don't have to install any software, just connect it via FireWire (Sony calls this iLink) and you are good to go!
I have had several Sonys and love them. You don't need one with fancy editing capabilities because you will edit your movies in iMovie. Just be sure that it has AV In and Out so you can import and export back to the camcorder.
My current version is the small DCR HC-26. There are newer versions of that HC-30something and 40something. Look at the specs on Sony's website
Some of them require the use of a dock to import and export. I am not really fond of that feature. I like just connecting directly to the camera.

  • (makeshift) case for the iPad Camera Connection Kit?

Has anyone found anything that would make a good case for the iPad Camera Connection Kit? i'm afraid I will lose mine if i don't put it in something, but i do want to keep it small

Go to the dollar store & get a cheap cell phone case. You might be able to get a case large enough that will also store the USB cable.

  • Basic. i connected my camera for download to iphoto as usual. this time nothing happens. iphoto doesnt open and no download begins. i opened iphoto and still nothing. what happened?

Normally when i connect my camera to the computer, iphoto opens up and a download begins immediately.  This time, nothing opens.  Not iphotos, or kodak.  I opened iphoto to see if that would start things but nothing.  What do i do?

Try image capture (in your applications folder)
Does your camera mount to the desktop - drag your photos to a desktop folder
once you get the photos off of the camera use the camera's format command to erase them and renew the memory format - in the future do not let iPhoto (or any other program) delete your photos - always properly disconnect and later (I prefer after at least one backup cycle) use the camera to format the memory

  • How to connect my camera on mac book?

how to connect my camera on my mac book?

Usually an appropriate cable, and other items are
included in the retail box a camera arrived in, so
there should be instructions by that manufacturer
to most suitably attach the camera to a Mac or PC.
Usually the computer will automatically detect the
camera when attached by USB cable; the Mac will
offer to use iPhoto or another application, to view
and handle image processing; or you could choose
to select a different application, or none at all.
For my Macs and two cameras, I do not have iPhoto
handle the images and I choose third-party software
because I don't make libraries of images in the Mac.
However depending on the computer and the camera
the Mac may already have sufficient drivers already
installed; so a software installation from a CD from the
camera maker may not be needed in order to use it.
Since your question is rather wide and gives no info
as to what you have, the replies are also generalized.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I can't connect my camera to my Mac tower - final cut doesn't recognize the connection.

I have a Canon AH X1 video camera which uses the older 6 pin firewire - I have a 6 pin to 9 pin adapter, but when I connect the camera and go to Capture and Log, it doesn't recognize the camera is connected.  Even when I click NOW, it does nothing.  My camera output settings have been set by the manual for this type of connection, HD and downgrade OFF, or something like that (don't have the camera in front of me this moment).  Any ideas?
    Thank you!

    Thanks for the quick response!  I have a smokin' Mac Tower - 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core, 10GB RAM, Mac OS 10.6.7.
I am running 6 pin firewire using a 9 pin adapter.  I have one internal hard drive - 999GB, formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - 914G are free.
Camera Settings - Playback STD - Comp out 1080i/480i
    HD Down Conversion - OFF
When I start up Final Cut Pro, it says
External A/V Unable to locate the following external devices:
    Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)
Your system configuration may have changed, or your deck/camera may be disconnected or turned off.
Please check your connections and click "Check Again" , or click "Continue" to set external device detection to None.
Then, when I go to Log and Capture, I get:
Unable to initialize video deck.  You may still log offline clips or use Capture Now.
Beneath that, "Initializing Device Control..." stays up and frozen.
THEN, if I click OK and Capture NOW, I get a quick flash of a screen that disappears, and nothing happens.
    Thanks in advance...

  • Can I use Magic Jack for BOTH phone calls and Fax. Is Magic jack PLUS BETTER.

I am using the Magic Jack for regular phone calls. Now, I want to use it for Faxing in and out - on Windows - on a wireless connection to my Officejet 8600 Pro Plus. I see a lot of problems in the forum. Is it easier to buy and use the new Magi Jack PRO. AND. PLEASE, Does anyone have instructions for the installation and use?

I'm going to be up front and straight forward with you.  Magic Jack, does not work with faxing 90% of the time.  It's not designed to.  That being said, you still have to have a phone line plugged into the printer to fax.  There is no such thing as wireless faxing.  There is internet faxing, through companies such as eFax, and you can use eFax wirelessly form the front panel of select printers.  The 8600 is not one of those printers though.  The printers that include the eFax app are in the PhotoSmart line.  Now that you know all of that, you can try to get faxing to work with magic jack, but it' most likely not going to work.  Here is a list of the things you can try:
Fist make sure you have a DSL/Digital filter installed in the line.  Next, set the fax speed to slow.  You can find steps in this document that will help with that.  Last make sure the ECM (Error Correction Mode) is off.  To turn off the ECM:
From the home screen, touch the right arrow.
    Touch setup.
    Touch fax setup.
    Touch advanced fax setup.
    Scroll down to ECM.
    Touch ECM.
    Touch off.
    Touch the home button.
That's about all you can do to get it to work, and even then it's not guaranteed at all.  Like I said, Magic Jack does not work with faxing.

  • How do I do port forwarding on my airport extreme for my IP camera (foscam)?

    Hi,
I've been working on this for what seems like a week.  I purchased a wireless security camera to put in my house and to see from my laptop (or IPAD2) when I'm away.  I am able to see it from either device when I'm here at home, but not when I'm out on the road.
According to the instructions for a mac setup, I needed to set up a DDNS service  and get a free account at DynDNS, which I did.  They also told me to use a different port than 80, suggesting 8081 as the http port which I plugged in to the camera device setting..  The next step is to do PORT FORWARDING and then I should be able to use my DDNS domain name and port number to login to my camera anywhere...
I'm stuck in how to do this with my airport extreme.  I see where I have to go into utilities and click on airport utility, and then manual set-up..
Right now when I click on the Internet tab at the top I see the connection sharing is off (Bridge Mode), and that I have to change it to share a public IP address to get DHCP and NAT to appear in the tabs..
when I go to NAT, the box for enable NAT port mapping protocol is checked and then there is a tab I can click on that says Configure Port Mapping.
I know that I'm supposed to click the plus button + to enter a service and a port and here's where I get stuck
when I click the + button I can either click on the choose  a service tab, which then drops down a list of services like Personal File Sharing, Window Sharing, Personal Web Sharing, Remote Login SSH , etc, or just keep it where it says choose a service and not choose one of the services.
Then there are some boxes to fill in for Public UDP Port(s), Public TCP Port(s),  PRIVATE IP address-where the only numbers I can change are the last ones and I don't know if I'm supposed to put the IP address of the camera or what?  and then the boxes for Public UDP and PUBLIC TCP.
I tried a few times to fill out the port numbers to 8081 (the one I selected for the IP camera) but I don't know what to do for the private IP address. When I changed the last numbers to the IP address of my camera, and went to update, it told me that I  had to correct the 2 problems before updating:
DHCP beginning address, and dhcp ending address...as the DHCP range you have entered conflicts with the  WAN IP address of your Airport wireless device.  So I cancel and am stuck.
Sorry this is so long.. but I really can't get anyone to help me figure this out.. The camera company isn't answering ..
    Thanks!!
    Barry

Thanks for the info. I checked the model number on the Westell site to get info on the device. From Westell's info.....
    1. Product Description
This ADSL modem is a NAT router with a four port 10/100BaseT Ethernet switch, a USB port and 802.11g wireless interface.
So, while you might refer to it as a "modem" ( a modem will only have one Ethernet port), you have a router or gateway. A gateway is simply a modem and router in the same box.
With the AirPort Extreme, you have 2 routers on the network. Basic networking rules dictate that when there are 2 routers, the first....your Westell.....must handlde DHCP and NAT,  and the second router....in this case the AirPort Extreme....must be configured to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will function correctly on the network. That's why the AirPort Extreme is in Bridge Mode. That is the correct setting on your network.
That's also why you were getting the error messages when you tried to configure the Extreme as a second router.
As I mentioned before, any port mapping or port forwarding is going to have to be set up on the "main" router....your Westell. It cannot be set up on the AirPort Extreme.

  • Using an external hard drive to connect the camera to the Mac Book Pro

I am about three weeks away from a 9 to 4 pin firewire cable. In the meantime, I am logging and capturing from my Canon AX HI through my external hard drive. I am not super amazed at the quality of the image, it's noisy.
I am using HDV tapes, and I don't beleive the lighting should be causing the issue.
Does anyone know if using the external hard drive to connect the camera to my Mac Book Pro is compromising the quality of the image? Can I expect a beautiful strong image on a lap top?
    Thanks for any help.

There is ZERO quality loss when you capture via firewire. It is a digital transfer of files...that's it. The issue you have is that you are trying to judge the quality of your image based on what you see with your computer monitors, and that is simply the LAST thing you should be doing.
And since this is HDV, the only way to monitor that is with an HD card or I/O device, and an HD monitor or TV. Like the Matrox MXO2 mini or AJA I/O Express mini and HDTV.

  • I recently purchased a shutter release remote for my IPAD camera but the cord is only three feet long.  I purchased a 3 banded AV extension but it doesn't work.  Can anyone tell me what the correct extension cable is and where I can find one?  Thanks.

I recently purchased a shutter release remote for my IPAD camera but the cord is only three feet long and I need an extension cord.  I purchased a 3 banded AV extension but it doesn't work.  I have been told that I need an extension cord that has AV and Mic to enable the remote shutter release to work with the extension cord.  Can anyone tell me what the correct extension cable is and where I can find one?  Thanks.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Connect a camera to the ipad

Can a camera be connected to an ipad?  If so, how?  Can you then transfer images from the camera to the ipad, for storage, for editing and for display?

I shoot RAW plus jpeg on my camera and then transfer photos to my iPad with the Camera Connection Kit. All my cameras use a CF card so I just connect the camera to the iPad instead of using the are reader. Once you connect you will be given the option to import all the photos or to select just those you want to import. Also you have the option to delete the photos from the camera or keep them there.
Not all camera work exactly the same. Some will allow you to transfer with the camera off. Other cameras have to be turned on to transfer the photos. So if you connect a camera and mothering happens after a little while, turn on the camera while it is still connected.

  • Connecting digital camera Sony DSC S-80 on to USB fails

When I connect my camera DSC-S80 on the computer, It does not recognize the camera. If I connect the camera on another computer with Windows XP every thing is ok. Who can help

    Hi Hans,
If your camera came with an installation CD you should load this first and only connect your camera when asked to do so by the installation process. This will ensure that when your camera is connected the correct driver will be associated with it.
If you connected your camera first then the operting system has to use the nearest approximation for it and this will probably result in your camera not being recognised correctly.

  • Connecting digital camera to iPod

I've imported my first movie directly from my Hp photosmart camera to my iPod, by using the special connector. iPod cannot play the movie and reports that Quicktime can be used. On my worldtour I only have my iPod and my camera. Is their another option to play the movies on the camera without using the computer?
    CU, Wim

It would be a great feature to be able to view (and back up) photos on the 'big screen' of an iPod Touch when on holiday for instance.
For me a reason to (for now not) buy one.
There's seems to be a possibility to get wifi on your camera. (special card) ??
Then you could use an app called Regal Media to transfer.
But anyway it would be much better to be able to just connect the camera to the iPod Touch with usb.
I hope this will be possible soon.
